Olive pomace is a residue substance in the food industry. It is not considered a hazardous waste or even a waste in general. This is potentially problematic because olive pomace contains certain compounds that can have a negative impact on the ecosystem, especially on aquatic organisms and plants. In case of inappropriate disposal, these toxic compounds may be leached into the soil and groundwater. This topic attracts additional interest due to the potential of olive pomace. The highly loaded olive mill wastes are characterized by low pH value, high electrical conductivity, and high content of sugar, phenols, and organic acids. In this work are shown the results pollutants removal from olive mill wastewater by adsorption and biosorption process on activated carbon and Aspergillus niger fungal pellets, as well as treatment of olive mill waste by composting process. The obtained results show that activated carbon removed 35 % organic matter and 47 % phenols, while fungal pellets removed 42 % organic matter, 57 % phenols, and 39 % colour. The obtained conversion during composting process of olive mill waste and tobacco was 45 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bacillus Listeria monocytogenes is widely distributed in the environment. Listeria monocytogenes most often causes infection in the neonates, pregnant women, elderly and immunosuppressed persons. We report on a case of fatal sepsis and meningitis in a 59-year-old woman receiving cyclophosphamide and glucocorticoid therapy for Wegener's granulomatosis over a 10-year period. Listeriosis should be suspected in case of sepsis and/or meningitis in patients who receive immunosuppressive agents. Since meningitis due to Listeria monocytogenes is not distinguishable clinically from other types of bacterial meningitis, antibiotics against Listeria monocytogenes should be included in the initial empirical therapy of bacterial meningitis in immunosuppressed patients, antibiotics against Listeria monocytogenes should be included.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-originating zoonotic disease caused by Puumala and Dobrava viruses, which belong to the genus Hantavirus. The most prominent ocular change in HFRS is transient myopia, which lasts for up to one week and is due to a forward movement of the ocular anterior diaphragm and thickening of the lens. Other ophthalmic manifestations of HFRS are eyelid edema, conjunctival injection with or without hemorrhages, chemosis, anterior uveitis, retinal edema with or without hemorrhages, and photophobia. Acute glaucoma attacks, which are rare, could be explained by the increased intraocular pressure (IOP) due to edema and hemorrhage in the ciliary body, causing anterolateral rotation, relaxation of the zonules, and anterior movement of the lens. They are treated with mydriatic-cycloplegic and corticosteroid eye drops and with furosemide. However, there are also controversial reports on decreased IOP during the acute phase of HFRS. Despite the fact that ocular symptoms in HFRS are common generally they do not require any medical therapy and the recovery of the patients is complete.
