WEB archives , *LIBRARY services for teenagers , *CHILDREN'S librarians , *YOUNG adults , *SOCIAL impact , *WEBSITES , *DOCUMENTATION - Abstract
Purpose. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the conferences for the children's and young adults' librarians organized by the Zagreb City Libraries - Medvescak Public Library and the Croatian Library Association's Commission for Library Services for Children and Young Adults in the context of the librarian competencies acquisition. Approach/methodology/design. The paper research has used the printed (documentation on the previous conferences kept at the Croatian Library Association and at the Medvescak Public Library) and the online sources (web pages of the Croatian Library Association and archived web pages of the Medvescak Public Library). The analysis encompassed the history and the conditions under which the conferences in the Medvescak Public Library were held as well as the relevant literature on the librarian competencies. Findings. The research has resulted in a chronological overview of the conferences for the children's and young adults' librarians held at the Medvescak Public Library from 2006 to 2021, with special emphasis on their role in acquiring competencies for work in the children's and young adults' libraries. These conferences enabled permanent and simply accessible acquisition of competencies through publishing of the presentations and recordings of the presentations on the website of the Croatian Library Association for the participants and librarians who could not attend live conferences. All these sources are systematically listed in the paper. Practical implications. The research findings can help the organizers in planning the topics of the future conferences for the children's and young adults' librarians and provide insight into the locations and sources of materials for permanent and simply accessible acquisition of competencies for the new generations of the children's and young adults' librarians. Social implications. The role of professional conferences as places of non-formal acquisition of competencies for the children's and young adults' librarians that cannot be obtained through formal or informal channels was emphasized. Originality and value. There have not been systematic reviews of the implementation of conferences for the children's and young adults' librarians held at the Medvescak Public Library prior to this paper. DIGITAL libraries , *HISTORY of libraries , *INSTITUTIONAL repositories , *WEB portals , *LOCAL history , *WEBSITES , *PUBLIC libraries , *SCHOOL libraries - Abstract
Goal. The paper presents the project The Local History Digital Library of the Primorsko-Goranska County, whose initiator and coordinator is the Rijeka City Library, and which undoubtedly represents a logical continuation of the functional connecting of public and school libraries in Primorsko-Goranska County. Approach/methodology. The project was implemented through several phases. In the first phase, we established a shared repository on the Indigo platform. Then the files and metadata were migrated from SVeVid, the digital library of the Rijeka City Library, using the Omeka system to the new system with a more complex metamodel. The Mali Lošinj digital library, which had already been digitized and prepared for publication on the platform Indigo, was also placed in the same repository. In the second phase, the digital collections of the Crikvenica City Library and the Viktor Car Emin City Library in Opatija, were also migrated from the Omeka system, and the functionalities of the Portal itself have been refined. At the same time, the existing local history periodicals of the Rijeka City Library, that had already been digitized, were also placed in the repository, as well as the other materials that were digitized in the meantime. In the following stages, the valuable local history material stored in public and school libraries of the Primorsko-Goranska County will be gradually digitized and uploaded on the portal. The results. The Local History Digital Library of the Primorsko-Goranska County was established as a digital repository on the Indigo platform that enables storage and standardization processing of the library material and its presentation, as well as creation of additional content. Each library included in the project has its own web page on the portal, with the possibility of searching the entire content of the repository or exclusively the content included in the digital collection of a specific library. In addition to the local history part, the portal also contains an informative section that includes the newsletters of the local and regional self-government units that the Rijeka City Library receives as the county legal deposit copies, and for which the consent for publication has been obtained from the copyright holder. Originality/value. The project "Local History Digital Library of the Primorsko-Goranska County" is innovative in its a pproach because the targeted area for the project is not just one library, but the entire jurisdiction of the county central library (Rijeka City Library), whereby one union repository contains several digital libraries from different institutions. This project can serve as a model for similar projects in other environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes a model for transferring data from dictionary structure into games. The model is developed on the example of Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik. Mrežnik has a complex structure with fields and subfields for entering data created in TLex. Dictionary data organized in a fixed structure can be selected from the dictionary, exported, and used for automatic or semi-automatic creation of educational games like spelling games, accentuation, splitting words into syllables, idioms, and word relations (e.g. synonyms, antonyms). Dictionary data can be processed by a game algorithm that creates game assignments and corrects answers based on data structure. Game types based on structured dictionary data are quizzes, fill-in-the-blank games, drag-and-drop games, typing games, and crossword puzzles. The development process will be analyzed based on these initial steps: understanding dictionary structure, conceptualizing games based on structured dictionary data, choosing game data, exporting data, processing data, and gamifying dictionary data. After explaining each of the steps, the authors propose modifications to the steps and analyze how they can be used for other e-lexicographic works.

The paper analyses games and gamification elements present on encyclopedia websites. The analysis included 92 websites of general and special encyclopedias, only 14 of which contain educational games or gamification elements. These games are categorised by type: quiz, crosswords, hangman, puzzles, drag and drop, unique games, etc. Gamification elements were also identified: scoring, levels, story, reward system, etc. The results of the analysis show that only a few encyclopedias contain games and gamification elements (15%) and that quizzes are the game type which occurs most often on encyclopedia websites (ten encyclopedia websites). There are also unique educational games with a story that can help users in learning geography, facts about animals, etc. There are also games like The Wikipedia Adventure that help the users learn how to work with Wikipedia. The research was conducted within the project Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik to create a conceptual framework for gamifying a web dictionary. The methodology of that conceptual framework can be used to create a conceptual framework for gamifying encyclopedias.

OUTCOME-based education , *LITERATURE , *LIBRARIANS , *LIBRARY acquisitions , *LIBRARY rules & regulations , *EDUCATION , *WEBSITES - Abstract
One of the key competencies for a children's librarian is to know and evaluate literature for children -- books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites and other electronic sources, etc. In this respect, children's librarians can add the most recent and relevant materials to the library collections, meeting both the developmental characteristics of children and needs or interests of each individual. The level of competence in this area is primarily reflected in the quality of library collections, and the impact on library acquisition policy. In addition, it is directly linked with recommending quality literature for children service and other information and reference services. Furthermore, being familiar with the literature for children as well as knowing how to evaluate it professionally has a large impact on the design of various library programs such as the promotion of reading and consulting with parents. Construction of the respective collections is considered to be the basis for the development of most other services. The question is whether it is possible to build and maintain the quality of library collections, and to appropriately design and develop other programs and services if a librarian is not familiar with the published literature. This paper will bring the results of the research aimed to explore the extent to which children's librarians of the county libraries in Croatia are familiar with the picture books for children and books for younger children. Additionally, it will discuss possible reasons for underdeveloped competencies in this area, and suggest some solutions for the existing problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ACADEMIC libraries , *LIBRARY personnel , *LIBRARIANS , *PARAMETER estimation , *NUMERIC databases , *WEBSITES - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the current state in the university libraries with special reference to the library staff. In the period between October 2011 and the end of February 2012 the research on the profile of the employees in the university libraries was conducted. It was done by searching the university web sites and by phone contacts with the librarians. The conclusion is that such analyses should be done regularly. They should be based on the parameters which would be defined by The Standards for the Academic Libraries in order to enable the extraction of the relevant statistical data and reports. Such analyses should become a legal obligation which would provide an insight into the current problems and ways of solving them as well as creating the conditions for staff enforcement and more effective functioning of the university libraries. The paper presents some aspects of new library services provided through the web site. Librarians should use web sites in order to offer online the traditional library services, and to provide access to the library's own digital resources and also to the remote information resources, in other words, to offer a new service. Using the method of analysis of the web content of Croatian university libraries, we classified the contents of library web sites and services, taking into consideration the possibilities of new information technologies. The research was conducted on two occasions, in 2009 and in 2012. The research results have shown the content and the role of the new service -web sites of the university libraries, and the goals the libraries have accomplished by introducing the new service. We analyzed the role of the library as a mediator between its users and a potentially available source of information which can be provided through a web site, and which enables easier access to information, as well as the ways in which it improves the research and the use of information sources. The article presents differences between ISBD(S) and its revised edition entitled ISBD (CR), published in 2002. The major novelty in the revised edition is the introduction of the concept of continuing resources, which includes both serial publications and integrating resources. Examples of integrating resources include updating loose-leafs and updating web sites. Changes to the existing rules as well as the newly introduced ones which appear in the second edition are presented in the paper. A part of the described rule changes incorporates more precise guidelines for bibliographic description of electronic continuing resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comics are a valuable yet still very depreciated commercial art, which needs more time and experts involved for its promotion. Although, librarians kept them somewhat hidden for a long time, nowadays comics are part of the general offer in the library. It is used both for entertainment and for educational purposes. This paper’s main topic is revolving around Croatian comics within Croatian public libraries. The topics discussed are the definition of comic and development through history with specific highlights on Croatian comics, their authors, elements of comics and types of comics. Furthermore, the discussion leads towards the importance of public libraries and their choice of comics in general librarian offers, and their efforts in comics promotion. Finally, catalogue and website research were conducted in 10 regional libraries. The research purpose was to find out about approximate number of comics, both global and Croatian, its biggest publishers and actions performed to keep the comics visible and in the spotlight.

Games usually accompany lexicographic works for children and can appear on special optical media. Now, most multimedia content accompanying the content of lexicographic works is published online. Examples of dictionaries that have games for learning vocabulary are Merriam-Webster dictionaries; in Croatia, games come on CD with the printed First School Dictionary, while online games accompany the First Croatian Orthography Manual. There is also a link to a typing game on the site of the Croatian Archive Dictionary. Unfortunately, most dictionary websites do not contain entertaining educational content such as games to help their users learn certain words, different forms of words, semantic and syntactic relations between words, spelling, pronunciation, etc. Gamification is a process in which gaming mechanics and elements are applied to a non-gaming situation to make it more entertaining. This paper explains the process of gamifying the dictionary content of the Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik. Gamification is conducted by using games for learning orthography, grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax), vocabulary, and culture. Many different games are implemented into the dictionary structure. These games include quizzes, memory games, crossword puzzles, drag-and-drop games etc. The technological solutions used to develop these games are explained. Other gamification elements that can be implemented into online dictionaries, such as badges for successfully finding words or leaderboards in competitive games are also presented.
