Activities of the “Orljak” Mountaineering Club from Opatija (hereinafter: the Club) are underrepresented in the history of Croatian mountaineering. However, a quarter of a century of existence and notable activities in Liburnia justify the need to document such an important episode in local, regional, and even national mountaineering history. This paper, therefore, explores work and activities of the Club from its earliest days in the form of “Orljak” Mountaineering Section within “Opatija” Mountaineering Club (as of 1980), the establishment of independent Club (1984), the period of growth and intensive activities in the 1980s, gradual fading out in the 1990s up to final notable activities in the first decade of the 21st century. The paper is based upon a thorough analysis of unpublished archival resources from several funds. This data is supplemented by interviews with people who were active members of the Club during a certain period, and with secondary literature. This data is little known, even within mountaineers’ circles; therefore, the objectives of this research are to save from oblivion the work and activities of a mountaineering club and to adequately valorise its work as a lasting heritage of local, regional, and national (mountaineering) history.

POWER (Social sciences) , *SUSTAINABLE development , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *ECONOMIC development , *CIVILIZATION - Abstract
Modern trends of socio-economic and technological development have a feature of permanent and the quickest changes in the history of human civilization. The consequences of such development raise many issues of sustainable development of our society in general and in particular. Although ecology has the character of requirements for sustainable development, in the latest developments, the question of its fate is importantly allocated by problems of relations between politics and economics. With these problems are opened main questions of this paper - how to survive development, to differentiate the interests and satisfy the assumptions of survival? In these changes which are globalizing ecology has a common interest and permanent needs of people and their communities. However, it is intended that this paper analyzes the consequences for that interests of the relationship between politics and economics in the current dynamics of the overall development. Expected results should contribute to the harmony between the political and economic interests and the needs of people on the one hand and ecology on the other hand, all in the human community, and not only in the state as a social and political community. WASTE products , *OBEDIENCE (Law) , *WASTE management , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection - Abstract
The paper addresses issues relating to the obligations of waste producers and waste owners in the Republic of Croatia set out in the Waste Management Strategy, in the provisions of the Waste Act and in the Waste Management Regulations. Furthermore, proceeding in awareness of the legislation regulating waste management, the paper also deals with the methods of waste disposal and the obligation on the part of industrial subjects and legal entities to keep records of waste disposal and submit these records to the relevant authorities of the Republic of Croatia on demand. Waste management is a burning issue in environment protection demanding priority and one of the most complex legislations in need of harmonisation with the legislation of the European Union. Answers to this problem and building an all-encompassing waste management system require knowledge of the waste flow from the producer/owner to the final waste dealer. Aiming to bring about improvements in waste management, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Nature has drafted a text of the new Waste Act containing the final draft which defines the measures for the prevention of harmful effects of waste on human health and environment including reduction of waste quantities at source. In addition, the Act provides instructions on waste management without the use of substances posing risk to the environment, lists valuable properties of reusable waste and suggests how to increase efficiency in resources management. CONTINENTAL shelf -- Law & legislation , *WATER boundaries , *ECONOMIC zoning , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection - Abstract
Only ten continental shelf delimitation lines have already been defined by bilateral agreements between the states with opposite or adjacent coasts in the Mediterranean Sea. This paper analyses the content of each one of these agreements, and points out toward the necessity of defining a great number of new boundaries of the Mediterranean seabed and subsoil, especially taking into account the increasing economic importance of its natural resources. This analysis is preceded by the survey of the implementation of conventional rules regarding the outer limits of the continental shelf in the national legislation of the coastal states. Italy outstands as the most active Mediterranean state in defining the seabed boundaries. Alongside adopting detailed regulations regarding the outer limits of the continental shelf, Italy has concluded five delimitation agreements with its neighbouring states - the former Yugoslavia, Tunisia, Spain, Greece and Albania. In addition to these treaties, there are also considered the important features of two treaties that implement judgements rendered by the International Court of Justice (Libya - Tunisia and Libya - Malta), as well as the delimitation criteria implemented in the single maritime boundary agreements between Bulgaria and Turkey, and France and Monaco. A further subject-matter of the analysis is the continental shelf delimitation line defined in 1978 by the agreement between Turkey and the Soviet Union, which nine years later became the boundary of their exclusive economic zones. The aim of this paper is not only to provide an overview of all the defined continental shelf boundaries in the Mediterranean, but also to attempt to answer the following question: whether the already existing continental shelf boundaries, which have been negotiated for the seabed, should also become also the boundaries of the superjacent waters. This issue is of particular importance for the future delimitation of the exclusive economic zone, that is, the ecological and fisheries protection zone of the Republic of Croatia, with similar zones established by the neighbouring states in the Adriatic. Considering the recently initiated explorations of potential oil and gas fields in the southern Adriatic, the paper draws attention to the yet uncompleted task of drawing the line of lateral boundary of the continental shelf between Croatia and Montenegro. Paper presents the results of the empirical sociological research connected with building LNG (liquid natural gas) terminal nearby Omišalj on the island Krk. Survey was conducted during the year 2006, on the occasional sample of local population (N=240). In this paper we will present the results of the research concerning the respondents perception about degree of risk (and benefit) of building LNG terminal comparing with Druzba Adria project. Also, we wanted to investigate perception of possible corruption in LNG project in local and state actors, experts and media. We tended to determine degree of trustiness in some actors of LNG building monitoring. Results showed that respondents consider Druzba Adria project more ecological risky than LNG project. Conceming the benefit of those two objects, respondents consider LNG terminal more beneficial. When we looked respondents estimate of perception of corruptness in LNG building, it showed that 44,6 % of the respondents believe that corruption is possible in a same degree as in other similar projects. Finally, two thirds of respondents think corruption is highest at state officials, and less then one third think local officials are corrupted. In monitoring LNC building, according to respondents' opinion, ecological organization, national experts and local government should be involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes opinions and assessments of students - as the younger population of the city of Karlovac and its surroundings - related to the pollution of their living environment. Karlovac County has several unsolved ecological problems. These problems are important for the students of the Polytechnic of Karlovac, as they are future academic citizens whose duty will be to solve ecological problems. The paper explores student assessments regarding Karlovac's living environment. Their opinions about the causes, consequences, responsibilities and methods of solving the aforementioned problems are investigated by means of a student survey. Particular ecological problems are ranked on a range from 1 to 5. The research findings indicate some priority questions which need to be solved (the conditions will remain unchanged, consequences for human health due to water pollution and technical- technological factors as well as other pollution sources will remain at high level, and insufficient awareness and education about these problems of all citizens and institutions is still present). For this reason this investigation should help increase the overall quality of life, as a continuous process towards achieving and improving human and institutional values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose. The paper deals with the Croatian "Green libraries", discussing the meaning of the library programs and services focused on educating users about sustainable development of society and importance of environmental protection as well as learning life-improving skills that affect not only individuals but the whole society. The goal of the article is to offer an insight into the range of ideas and possibilities that Croatian libraries have accomplished so far in their efforts to effectively connect librarianship and ecology. Methodology. The examples are presented chronologically beginning with the year 2011, when the Association of Istria Librarians started the "Green library" project, within which many green library programs were initiated and have been carried out ever since in different types of libraries throughout Croatia. The discussed examples of green libraries were selected by certain criteria: they were presented at professional conferences, described in published articles, or there were information about them on the libraries' web pages. Findings. The accomplishments of the Croatian "Green libraries" prove that libraries conduct a wide array of activities as part of the program. The cooperation between libraries and different institutions, associations, and individuals that deal with sustainable development, fauna and flora preservation, and environmental protection is particularly important. Many of these programs have been initiated through s direct cooperation between libraries and local communities, proving the importance of recognizing and taking into account library users' demands. Social implications. In its "Statement on Libraries and Development" (2013), IFLA invited policy and decision makers to recognize libraries as reliable institutions carrying out programs which contribute significantly to solving sustainability issues concerning the entire community. Originality. The article offers the first overview of the previous Croatian practices and experiences with "Green libraries", which can serve as guidelines and motivate other librarians in their future work. Ever since the automobile has been invented, the automotive industry has been the generator of numerous technological improvements which, due to obligatory environmental protection legislation and limited energy resources, are more and more focused on to use of electric power. In this sense, electric cars represent an important segment of the observed market, and over time, it is expected that all producers will focus on this type of vehicle. Following the above, the paper investigates the characteristics of the automotive market with special emphasis on the electric car market. The results of the research based on analysis of Pearson correlation coefficient calculated by using data collected from Companies market cap and Statista show that the value of the companies’ stock price in the observed market in the period from 2010 to 2020 is not correlated with each observed year with the number of sold cars. However, by using the Herfindahl-Hirschman index and concentration ratio (CR4) calculated by using data collected from Knoema, it is confirmed that competition forces the most important participants in the internal combustion car market to rapidly restructure and focus on electric cars in order not to lose the existing market share. Finally, regression analysis of data collected from the International Energy Agency proved that the price of a battery per kilowatt-hour is one of the important factors in the development of the electric car industry, while additional descriptive analysis provides detailed insight into different variables determining the level of sales of electric vehicles.

- Abstract
The paper deals with the vulnerability of the sea, global warming and the pressures of corporate polluters, with particular emphasis on the protection of marine environment. Analysed are the achievements of the International Panel on Climate Change, the application of precautionary principle, as well as the role of courts and public interest. The judicial authority may act over a longer term than the elected representatives of the executive, as a sufficient time period for deliberation that goes beyond the electoral cycle in democratic societies is guaranteed. Pointed out is the need for the European states to refer to court the climate-related practice and the standard of conscientious treatment, along with the implementation of the precautionary principle and the universal human rights principles. The authors bring forward the opinion that an active role of the judiciary may essentially contribute to environmental protection, possibly more significantly than that of an individual national, regional or international representative and judiciary authority. With a growing environmental degradation and the destruction of natural resources, it is increasingly recognized that criminal law protection is needed as the most repressive measure to protect the environment. This paper considers the criminal law protection of biodiversity in the Republic of Serbia, Republic of Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an emphasis on the protection of wild plant and animal species that are particularly vulnerable to overexploitation, including strictly protected and protected wild species and forest ecosystems. The analysis covers various criminal offenses against biodiversity in the context of protection of wild plant and animal species, and discusses the effects of the implementation of relevant regulations. Comparative statistics on criminal charges, as well as accusations and convictions for these crimes in the last decade, indicate a worryingly mild penal policy and a lack of capacity of professionals to act in environmental criminal proceedings. Although statistics indicate that there has been an increase in the reporting of environmental crimes, the number of reported cases remains at a worryingly low level. A large number of criminal charges are rejected, and when criminal proceedings are initiated and conducted, mild criminal penalties are imposed, most often suspended sentences or fines. All this indicates that increasing the knowledge and capacity of professionals is needed in order to improve efficiency of criminal protection against the environment and biodiversity in practice.

ZEOLITES , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *METAL ions , *CHEMICAL decomposition , *ION exchange (Chemistry) , *CLINOPTILOLITE , *METALLURGY - Abstract
The paper summarizes the findings and our own experience regarding exploitation of the properties of natural zeolite in the final processing of water to remove traces of metal ions like chromium, arsenic and silver. Arsenic present in natural waters is of genetic origin and is due to the process of decomposition of minerals in groundwater. Other examined metal ions are mainly of anthropogenic origin and come from the chemical, textile and metallurgical industries. The results showed that the efficiency of arsenic removal using iron modified zeolites for the lower concentration range is up to 100%, for chromium ions in concentration range from 0.5 to 20 mg/L is 40 to 60% depending on the modification of zeolites, and for silver ions in concentration range from 5-120 mg/L from 55 to 70% depending on the deposit of the natural zeolite. SOCIAL responsibility of business , *INDUSTRIES & society , *FOOD industry & the environment , *CONSUMER protection - Abstract
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) represents activities, implemented by a company in order to fulfill ethical requirements towards all target groups. Studies show that investing in the technologies which aim at preserving the environment and doing business in line with ecological requirements can increase the competitiveness of companies on the market. Having in mind the fact that numerous companies, during the production process produce some negative effects on the environment and the society, the requirements and the pressure of the social community is growing so that the companies start acting responsibly. This is very important for the environmental protection, exercising human rights and freedoms, meeting the requirements and the responsibility towards the consumer rights protection, companies' visibility and control by the general public. Corporate social responsibility urges companies to act responsibly towards the society, thus, that relationship is based on respecting all of the social, ethical, ecological and economic values important for the decision making process. Companies from the food industry have a special social responsibility to preserve the environment in which they operate, to provide healthy and secure food to the consumers and to raise the life quality of the wider community by introducing certain actions. In this context, the paper will analyze the importance and necessity of social responsibility of companies of the food industry. In developed economy, corporate social responsibility is becoming a very important factor for consumers when deciding which product to buy, which improves the competitiveness of the CSR companies. A successful involvement of the transition countries, such as Serbia, and their companies, into the international economy, requires of them to adopt standards of the global market, out of which CSR is considered a priority. TOURISM , *OCEAN travel , *SUSTAINABLE development , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection ,CROATIA description & travel - Abstract
Cruising tourism in the world, as well as in The Republic of Croatia, has significantly increased. The increase in cruising ship traffic has a beneficial effect on the economy of The Republic of Croatia, and therefore on social satisfaction too. However, the intensification of cruising vessel traffic also increases its negative impact on the environment: sea, land and air. While there are many researches in the world about the impact of cruising tourism on the environment, in Croatia, such researches are lacking. Therefore, the subject of the research in this paper has been to identify necessary actions, with the help of theoretical and practical guidelines, so cruising tourism in our coastal area could contribute to sustainable development. MARITIME law , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. , *WASTE product laws , *POLLUTION prevention , *ENVIRONMENTAL policy , *ENVIRONMENTAL engineering , *MARINE pollution , *MARITIME shipping , *PREVENTION - Abstract
The paper deals with the effect of marine environment protection on the autonomous right to salvage incorporated in the Lloyd's Standard Form of Salvage Agreement (Lloyd's Open Form - LOF). The origins of the form go back for more than a hundred years. During that period the form has been revised from time to time. Nowadays, LOF 1995 and LOF 2000 are in use and a new LOF is being prepared, and it is to be published in 2010 (LOF 2010). The most important changes included in the form are related to the 1980 revision - LOF 1980. It was the first time that the right of salvage introduced a long established principle No Cure-No Pay (without useful result there is no right to reward). Further development of the LOF form moved towards better motivation of salvors for prevention of marine environment pollution. Today, the prevention of marine environment pollution is the priority in salvage. The question that causes constant worry to modern salvors is whether the compensation at their disposal is adequate in the case of pollution prevention with regard to their exposure to civil and criminal liability. The fact is that the current remuneration system is not satisfactory and does not sufficiently stimulate the salvors in the protection of the marine environment. Apart from the special award and SCOPIC compensation (Special Compensation P&I Club), salvors only have at their disposal the salvage award as their permanent source of income, and that is traditionally limited by the value of the salved property. Therefore the constant efforts and warnings of The International Salvage Union (ISU) deserve to be praised as they tackle the need to find a new way to motivate salvors for pollution prevention. For now, the fastest and most effective way is to speed up a new revision of LOF which will introduce the Environmental Salvage Awards as an addition to the traditional Salvage award. PACKAGING , *WASTE management , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *PACKAGING industry , *WASTE recycling , *ENVIRONMENTAL management , *GLASS , *CONSUMER goods ,ENVIRONMENTAL aspects - Abstract
Waste is an ever-growing problem in environment protection worldwide. The paper deals with packaging which eventually ends up as waste. A more rational approach to packaging of some products can save up to 30% of the price of the final product. Selected here are typical examples of packaging of some frequently used products: juices, beverages, milk, food and other products sold in small packages such as perfumes, toilette waters and skin products, various cleaning products, electronic equipment (PCs, computer mice, USB memories, memory cards for digital cameras, etc.) The situation on the market was studied in order to propose ways to cut down on waste by using more suitably designed and environment-friendly materials. Changes in packaging are proposed with advantages and benefits of these changes stressed. Glass packaging should be used as much as possible, as it is healthiest and most environmentfriendly. Glass can be recycled many times. Consumers are used to glass packaging and are in the habit of returning it to the shops. The suggested changes in packaging do not require any new costs or work, yet they constitute significant savings. Starting from pre-school, children should be taught that environment protection and waste management are part of life and not a burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waste waters pollute rivers, lakes, seas and ground waters. This threatens the existence of life on Earth. Waste waters facilitate the growth of micro-organisms that consume oxygen, causing fish perishing and the growth of pathogenic microbes. This paper puts emphasis on the problem of environmental protection against waste waters generated by 'Duga Resa Cotton Industry'. The textile industry generates waste waters in the production process. Such polluted waste waters should be purified before discharging into watercourses. The method of pre-treatment or purification of waste waters in the textile industry can be a neutralization, oxidation or reduction procedure. Moreover, there are physical degradation methods (depositing, filtration, absorption, etc.), physical and chemical degradation methods (coagulation/ flocculation, aeration, extraction, combustion, osmosis, electrolysis, etc.) and biological degradation methods (aerobic, anaerobic, by means of activated carbon and fungi). The selection of the purification method depends on the composition and type of waste waters. Only after purification can waste waters be discharged into the sewerage. The law prescribes the quality of waste waters, thus raising the quality of people and environmental protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The more and more rigorous regulations on the environmental protection, as well as the need for a much better fuel exploitation, have raised greater demands on the designer. The development of numerical methods and, at the same time, a computing power growth, makes the checking of new ideas possible, even in the early stage of the engine development. The paper aims at presenting a survey of all the possibilities offered by the AVL-BOOST software produced by the firm AVL from Graz: A graphical interface, that enables the user with only a basic knowledge of a simulation technology to master the computer programme in a very short time, has been described too. A one-cylinder engine model has been presented and its operation simulated. The results thus obtained have been analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the research is to present the overall and significant impact of the urban water system on the environment, i.e. environmental protection in the context of increasing the use of renewable energy sources, and how such energy sources affect climate change in general. Renewable energy sources include: wind energy, water energy, solar energy, hydrogen energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy, tidal energy, wave energy, cold energy from space and others. The application of the principles of sustainable development leads to the need to use renewable energy sources, improve their technical characteristics and functioning, and find new methods and technologies to finally abandon the use of non-renewable energy sources. To this end, it is necessary to pursue a policy based on strategic planning and the use of an integrated approach in the operation and management of urban water systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
