Background and objective Preoperative computed tomography (CT) guided microcoil localization is a common method for small lung nodules before video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). However, this method still has some limitation such as complicated operation and slight complications. We have optimized the original method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical value of this optimized method. Methods 35 pulmonary nodules from 31 patients between September 2018 and January 2019 were localized by the optimized method before VATS. The success rate, complications, pathological results and localization operations related data were statistically analyzed. Results The success rate of localization was 97.1%, and the success rate of VATS removal was 100%. The average operation time was 10.1 min (5 min-31 min), and the average time required for resection of lesions was 38.2 min (10 min-100 min). During the surgery, the microcoil of one patient was found to be dislocated and retracted into the chest wall. A puncture needle was inserted intolung tissue from the chest wall puncture point after the lung was inflated, and then the pulmonary nodule were successfully located and removed. A minor pneumothorax occurred in 3 patients, but no closed drainage was needed. Three patients developed intrapulmonary hematoma. The pathological results of 35 pulmonary nodules included 15 well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, 7 carcinoma in situ, 5 microinvasive adenocarcinoma, 4 atypical adenomatoid hyperplasia, 2 intrapulmonary lymph node hyperplasia, 2 inflammatory nodules. Conclusion For small pulmonary nodules requiring thoracoscopic surgery, the optimized computed tomography-guided pulmonary nodule microcoil localization technique is convenient, safe and effective, and worthy of promotion to use. This study discusses a case in which corneal-donation care was provided to a 57-year-old patient with terminal salivary gland cancer. Nursing care was provided from June 1 to June 28, 2017. The overall nursing assessment (covering physiological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects) confirmed that the three main issues faced by the patient were chronic pain, dysfunctional family processes, and spiritual disturbances. Effective pain treatment was applied during the care process in order to stabilize the patient's physical condition. A hospice shared care team then worked together to help the patient mend his relationships with family members, fulfill his wish to donate his cornea, find meaning in his life, affirm his contribution to his family and society, and die a peaceful death. With regard to clinical practice, an explanation of corneal donation should be included in the conventional educational guidelines for hospice care. In addition to referrals to the relevant medical teams, it is recommended that nursing personnel who deal with patients like this participate in organ donation courses and develop positive attitudes and grief counseling skills. These actions will enable them to build up the professionalism, confidence, patience, and organ procurement-related skills required for the provision of care to these patients, which will in turn lead to better-quality palliative care. It is hoped that the nursing experience shared herein provides nursing personnel with a reference for palliative cancer care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To investigate the expression characteristics of human beta-defensin-2 (HBD-2) mRNA and protein in salivary gland benign and malignant tumor tissues, as well as in salivary gland inflammation. Methods The expression of HBD-2 in salivary gland benign tumor, salivary gland cancer, inflammation tissues and normal salivary gland tissues were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time polymerase chain reaction (Real-Time PCR) and immunohisto-chemical. The differences expression of HBD-2 mRNA and protein were analyzed. Results RT-PCR results showed that HBD-2 mRNA expression in salivary gland benign tumors, salivary gland cancer, and inflammation tissues was 6.468-, 0.334-, and 10.563-fold higher than that in normal tissues, respectively (P<0.05). HBD-2 was expressed in the nuclei of these organs and malignant tissues. Conclusion HBD-2 mRNA and protein expressions are significantly increased in salivary gland benign tumor tissues and inflammation tissues compared with those in normal salivary gland tissues, but are significantly decreased in salivary gland cancer. The protein nuclear transfer in salivary gland cancer tissues is also significantly increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between ERCC4 and ERCC5 polymorphisms and risk of salivary gland tumors. METHODS: Case-control study was carried out in 133 cases of histologically confirmed salivary gland tumors and 142 age and gender matched healthy control cases. Polymorphisms of ERCC4 rs6498486 and ERCC5 rs751402 were detected by PCR-RFLP. Multiple factors logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the association between gene polymorphisms and risk of salivary gland tumors using SPSS 18.0 software package. RESULTS: The genotype distribution of each polymorphism was found to be of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the study. ERCC5 rs751402 TT genotype was associated with risk of salivary gland tumors (TT vs. CC+CT: 0R=0.45, 95% CI: 0.21-0.98, P= 0.046). No significant association was found in ERCC4 rs6498486. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that ERCC5 rs751402 polymorphism may be associated with risk of salivary gland tumors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To promote the diagnostic accuracy of salivary Warthin' s tumor by summarizing the ultrasonographic features of salivary Warthin' s tumor. Methods Sixty-nine lesions (58 patients with salivary Warthin' s tumor) were retrospectively studied by ultrasonography and confirmed by histopathology. Results The ultrasonographic mani - festations of salivary Warthin's tumor demonstrated in three patterns. Type I: Solid mass (34 lesions, 49.3%), the mass was solid, grid-shaped echo inside. The mass was pathologically composed of such various tissues as epithelial cells, lymphatic organization, fibrous tissue which were compactly and evenly arranged, and little mucous formed the cyst cavity in which there projected epithelial papilla. Type II: Cystic-solid mixed mass (30 lesions, 43.5%), there was no flake-like echo, cystic-solid boundary was clear. Histopathological study revealed glandular epithelium made up irregular catheter and cyst cavity with yellowish mucous, glue-frozen-like stuff or brown colloidal substances. Type ifi: Cystic mass (5 lesions, 7.2%), the mass manifested separated cystic echo crumbs. The histopathological study showed salivary Warthin' s tumor with infarctions and infections; The coincidence of ultrasound and histopathology diagnose was 79.7%. Conclusion The ultrasonographic features of salivary Warthin's tumor are mainly based on the organization of histopathological study. The grasp of various ultrasonographic imagings and pathological changes is beneficial for increasing the accuracy rate of diagnosis higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: To investigate the proportion of salivary gland tumors in the elder patients in the past ten years, in order to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: The medical data of salivary gland tumors treated in our department from January 2000 to December 2009 were reviewed and analyzed. The changes of three periods between 21cl0s, 20c90s and 20c80s were compared. RESULTS: The number of salivary gland tumors in elder patients increased rapidly in recent years, especially that of benign tumors. Warthin's tumor was the most common benign tumors, and adenoid cystic carcinoma was most often found in malignant tumors. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma rose to the third among malignant tumors of salivary gland and first among parotid gland malignancies. The proportion of benign tumor was almost equal to malignant tumor in minor salivary gland. The benign-malignant ratio of palatal salivary gland was 1.34:1, which was opposite to the previous figure. The parotid gland was the most common site, followed by palatal and submandibular gland. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of salivary gland tumors in elder patients in 2000s was different from that in 1980s and 1990s. The changes should be taken into attention in daily clinical works. PURPOSE: To investigate the expression of CD 147 in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary gland, and its correlation with patients' clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis. METHODS: Immunohistochemical (Envision™) technique was used to examine the expression of CD147 in 72 ACC cases and 20 normal salivary gland tissues. SPSS16.0 software package was employed to analyze the data statistically. RESULTS: The expression of CD 147 in ACC was 62.5%, significantly higher than that in normal salivary gland tissues (P<0.01). The expression of CD147 significantly correlated with tumour size, pathologic type, clinical stage, perineural invasion, vascular invasion and distant metastasis (P<0.05), but not with age, gender and tumor recurrence (P>0.05). Univariate analysis showed that the cumulative survival rate was significantly lower in patients with strong expression of CD 147 than in patients with moderate or negative expression (P<0.0001). Multivariate analysis indicated that CD147 expression, pathologic type, vascular invasion and distant metastasis were all independent predictors of overall survival time (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: CD 147 expression significantly correlates with the clinicopathological characteristics of ACC. It may serve as a valuable marker for diagnosis and an indicator for prognosis of ACC. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical features, treatment and factors affecting the prognosis of patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws at West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University in the recent 20 years were retrospectively analyzed according to the clinical features, treatment and factors affecting the prognosis. A thorough review of clinical records was performed and the histological diagnosis was revised according to the 2005 WHO criteria. RESULTS: Most central salivary gland tumors of the jaws occurred in middle-aged females. Diagnosis was difficult because clinical manifestations were not typical as swelling of the jaws, pain mid tooth mobility were common. Most of these diseases were malignant and pathological types were diverse. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common type. Surgery was the primary treatment plan. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that the final diagnosis in most patients with central salivary gland tumors of the jaws is acquired by preoperative biopsy. Surgery was the primary treatment method and radical resection is the first choice for the patients. The resection of sufficient frontier could reduce the chance of recurrence to a great extent.
