The demand for professional competencies has increased for Taiwan's fashion ready-to wear industry as this industry undergoes major changes from Oriented Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), to Oriented Design Manufacturing (ODM), and now, in some cases, to Oriented Brand Manufacturing (OBM). Therefore the professional competencies of a fashion product designer can significantly influence the future development and success of companies. This research will be carried out using in-depth interviews and data analysis from case studies to explore and establish professional competence indices for fashion ready-to-wear designers. These indices can be used as tools for staff recruitment and as guides for fashion training and education. Altogether, the indices have 48 important elements, and can be used both to assess basic performance competencies and as criteria for decisions about job promotions. Through an analysis of data available from Jasmine Enterprises Inc, the case study enables us to understand the extent of the competencies of ready-to-wear designers to meet the core demands of the company, such as individual creativity and innovation, understanding of market competition, ability to express fashion nuances in illustrations (as expressed in design), and understanding of clothing materials.
