Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome and factors related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in university students. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted using a self-report structured questionnaire with 420 university students. Data collection was done during May and June, 2017. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a t-test, x² test, and binary logistic regression analysis with IBM SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: The prevalence for IBS was 24% among Korean university students. Family history of IBS (OR=2.98, 95% CI=1.32~6.70), history of stomach and intestinal disease (OR=2.24, 95% CI=1.36~3.77), sleep quality (OR=2.01, 95% CI=1.16~3.48), mild anxiety (OR=2.75, 95% CI= 1.19~6.33) and more than moderate anxiety (OR=2.02, 95% CI=1.02~4.00) were found to be factors related to IBS. Conclusion: The prevalence of IBS was high among university students, and sleep quality and anxiety significantly influenced prevalence of IBS in these students. Therefore, interventions to decrease symptom of IBS must focus on management of sleep quality and anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study was done to understand nursing students' exposure of needlestick and sharp injuries (NSSI), level of anxiety as well as experience of practicing injection with human beings during Fundamentals of Nursing (FN) practice. Methods: Data consisted of self-report questionnaires completed by 571 nursing students who had completed an injection practice in FN. The questionnaire included questions on general characteristics, exposure to NSSI, experience of practicing injections with human beings, level of anxiety and other experiences. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results: Of the students, 17.5% experienced NSSI and 83.2% performed invasive injection procedures in the FN practice. The level of anxiety was 4.62-6.46/10 points when injecting a classmate and 1.27-1.93/10 points when using manikins. The feeling most often reported was worried about making a mistake that could hurt my classmate (57.2%). Conclusion: Nursing students are exposed to NSSI and experience a high degree of anxiety in invasive injection practice. These results indicate that it is necessary to develop and implement standardized NSSI prevention and anxiety reduction programs in FN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the trends in studies published in Journal of Korean Critical Care Nursing (JKCCN) from 2008 to 2013. Methods: A total of 65 studies published between 2008 to 2013 were reviewed using criteria developed by researchers. Results: Approximately 36% of studies were conducted with patients. Intensive care unit (ICU) was the most popular site as the study setting. Among 59 research papers, 42.4% were approved by institutional review board (IRB). Quantitative studies were 78.6%, while qualitative studies were 4.6%. The research designs for the quantitative studies were survey (52.3%), quasi-experimental (16.9%), and so on. There was no randomized controlled trial. The most frequently used methods to provide nursing intervention was education. In addition, "nurse" and "ICU" were most commonly used keyword. Conclusion: Considering the low rate of IRB approval, more stringent application of research ethics is necessary to improve the quality of JKCCN. We present a case of a 64-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia who developed a hepatic abscess during the neutropenic period after induction chemotherapy. To treat the abscess, meropenem and ciprofloxacin were administered to target Klebsiella pneumoniae and percutaneous drainag performed. As a result, the patient's fever and c-reactive protein (CRP) subsequently improved. After six weeks of antibiotic therapy, an abdominal computed tomography scan revealed remains of the liver abscess as well as an ileus in the small bowel. Molds from the Mucor genus were cultured from repeated liver abscess drainage and an abscess wall biopsy confirmed hepatic mucormycosis. Along with administration of amphotericin-B deoxycholate for four weeks, we performed Iobectomy for hepatic mucormycosis and small bowel resection for a suspected small bowel mucormycosis. After these operations, the patient received liposomal amphotericin B for three weeks and was then maintained with oral posaconazole for more than four weeks. Our case report suggests that hepatic mucormycosis should be considered when a hepatic abscess exhibits a retarded response to antibacterial agents, especially for patients with risk factors. In addition, because an isolated hepatic mucormycosis is infrequent, a thorough search for the extent of the disease is necessary before surgical resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study was conducted to test the effect of the Hand Hygiene Education Program on hand hygiene knowledge, hand hygiene perception, nasal Staphylococcus aureus colonization and hand hygiene adherence in nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent pre-post test of quasi-experimental design was used. 87 second grade nursing students participated in the study with 43 in the experimental group and 44 in the control group. We used the Hand Hygiene Education Program which was held 5 times over 5 weeks, taking 60 minutes per session. For the analysis, descriptive statistics, chi test, and t-test were used for statical analysis with SPSS 19.0. Results: There were significant increases in hand hygiene knowledge (p=.004) and hand hygiene adherence (p=.002) and there was a significant decrease in nasal Staphylococcus aureus colonization (p=.026) in the experimental group compared to the control group. However, hand hygiene perception (p=.543) was not significantly changed. Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest that the Hand Hygiene Education Program may be effective in enhancing hand hygiene knowledge and hand hygiene adherence. Also this program was effective in reducing nasal Staphylococcus aureus colonization in nursing students. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effects of the Hand Hygiene Education Program on hand hygiene perception in nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
