The basic principle of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a surgical method of cutting a lens accurately in the corneal stroma by femtosecond laser, and then remove the lens through a small incision, which is a popular surgical method to correct myopia and astigmatism. In this paper, the effects of SMILE on postoperative vision, visual quality, corneal higher-order aberration, corneal biomechanical characteristics, corneal posterior surface height and so on are reviewed.
