This is an article in the field of process mineralogy. Cobalt is a strategic metal primarily found as an associated element in metal deposits. The Panxi region's vanadium-titanium magnetite deposit, the largest of its kind in China, also contains significant cobalt resources. Yet, the distribution and microscopic occurrence of cobalt within the mineral phases of cobalt-rich ores remain unexplored. This paper focuses on the Taihe vanadium-titanium magnetite deposit in Panxi area as the research object, and uses chemical analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-BSE), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), advanced mineral identification and characterization system (AMICS), electron probe microscopy (EPMA) and other analytical techniques to study the chemical composition, mineral composition and distribution law and occurrence state of Co element in different minerals of typical cobalt-rich ores in the deposit. The research results show that the sulfide in the cobalt-rich sample mineral has a higher cobalt content, while the cobalt content in the iron-titanium oxide is lower, and other minerals contain almost no cobalt. The distribution law of cobalt shows that it is mainly distributed in sulfides, and a small amount is distributed in iron-titanium oxides and gangue minerals. The cobalt element in the sample has two occurrence states: independent mineral-sulfur cobalt nickel ores and isomorphous. The research results provide a mineralogical foundation for the comprehensive utilization of cobalt resources in the area.

- Abstract
For the cobalt ‐ bearing copper oxide concentrate from Congo, experiment of coke reduction smelting with fayalite slag was conducted. The effects of CaO ‐ to ‐ SiO2 mass ratio, FeO ‐ to ‐ SiO2 mass ratio and coke rate on the reduction rates of copper and cobalt were investigated. The reduction sequence and conditions of copper, cobalt, iron and silicon oxides were analyzed by thermodynamics. The reduction process of copper, cobalt and iron oxides was quantitatively analyzed by means of metal oxide reduction thermodynamics and coke gasification kinetics. The results show that the reduction of copper, cobalt and iron in the copper oxide concentrate can be divided into the competitive fast reduction period in the early stage and the slow reduction period of copper and cobalt in the later stage. The reduced metal iron in the slow reduction period will undergo reoxidation. The large amount of competitive iron reduction in the early stage and its reoxidation in the later stage will reduce the reduction rate of copper, cobalt and iron and the effective utilization rate of coke. The formation mechanism of ferroalloy layer on the surface of crude copper is revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The change of iron grade in the leaching residue and the leaching kinetics under normal pressure and pressure were examined. The pressure leaching of nickel and cobalt from a high iron and low grade laterite nickel ore in Indonesia with sulfuric acid was studied. The results show that under the conditions of acid/ore ratio of 260 kg/t, leaching temperature of 250 °C (corresponding to water vapor pressure of 4. 0 MPa), liquid volume/solid mass ratio of 3/1, stirring speed of 300 r/min, particle size of 100 mesh and reaction time of 1 h, the leaching rates of nickel, cobalt and iron are 98. 1 %, 98. 3% and 4. 7%, respectively, and the iron grade can reach 51. 3%. The leaching processes of nickel and cobalt under pressure and atmospheric pressure are in line with the shrinkage kernel model of interfacial chemical reaction control, and the activation energies of the reactions are 116 kj/mol and 91 kj/mol under pressure, respectively, and the activation energies of the reaction under atmospheric pressure are 41 kj/mol and 53 kj/mol, respectively. The leaching is mainly goethite under normal pressure, and chromite, magnetite and other mineral phases under high pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective] Cobalt stands as a critical metal in the transition toward green, low-carbon energy. Japan, a significant consumer and trading hub for global cobalt resources, plays a pivotal role in elucidating the flow and evolutionary traits of global cobalt resources across the lifecycle, as well as the dynamic shifts in trade patterns. [Methods] This study employed the dynamic material flow analysis method to construct a framework analyzing the flow of cobalt within Japan’s trade network across its life cycle. It examined the evolution of cobalt material flow in Japan from 2000 to 2020. [Results] The flow analysis showed that Japan’s cobalt consumption totaled 272000 tons, showcasing notable alterations in flow and direction. The production of cobalt salt surged in the refining stages, witnessing a transition from consumer electronics batteries to electric vehicle batteries in manufacturing. Cobalt resource consumption during the usage stage demonstrated an initial increase followed by a subsequent decline, consistently led by consumer electronics batteries. With full recycling of waste in the waste management stage, the domestic demand of Japan could be met. The stock analysis showed that conventional applications experienced an initial rise followed by a decline, while emerging applications steadily grew. Consumer electronics batteries continued to dominate the stock structure, with electric vehicle batteries surpassing superalloys to secure the second position. The trade pattern analysis showed that despite a diversification of Japan’s import sources, material reliance on China surged significantly. Simultaneously, Japan’s cobalt-containing terminal product export market shifted from Asia to the United States and Europe. [Conclusion] Japan’s cobalt industry established a comprehensive processing model of “upper-middle stream in-flow and lower stream out-flow”. Driven by transportation energy shifts and industrial policies, electric vehicle batteries emerged as the primary driver for cobalt resource consumption in manufacturing. Japan ensures cobalt supply chain stability through resource diplomacy, substitution, and research and development in reduction technologies. On the one hand, the relevant conclusions can lay the foundation for global systematic and dynamic research on fine-grained country-scale cobalt material flows. On the other hand, this analysis of Japan’s cobalt material flow serves as a reference for China to accurately examine and evaluate the evolution of Japan’s cobalt supply and industrial chain. This knowledge may foster the improvement of strategic mineral security, particularly concerning cobalt.

Objective To investigate the effect of cobalt (Co) and calcium-phosphate (Ca/P) doped coating on titanium surfaces and their angiogenic effect. Methods Microarc oxidation (MAO) was used to prepare Co-Ca/P-doped and Co-doped coatings. Titanium (Ti) sheet without MAO treatment was used as control. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface micromorphology of the coatings. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) was also applied to detect the doped chemicals and their contents. Standard soaking solutions of these coatings were prepared using an endothelial cell medium (ECM) solution for subsequent angiogenesis experiments. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were cultured on Matrigel with ECM soaking solutions for 4 h and 8 h. The microvessels were observed under a microscope, and the number of microtubules and their interconnecting nodes were analyzed with Image J software. Results Co doped and Co-Ca/P-doped coatings were successfully prepared by MAO, which was demonstrated by both SEM observation and EDS analysis. SEM observation showed that irregular crystals of the above chemicals were present on both Co and Co-Ca/P-doped coatings, commonly with a diameter

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is essential for tissue repair and regeneration. Improving the ability of medical metal materials to promote angiogenesis is a research hotspot in recent years. OBJECTIVE: To sort out and discuss the possible molecular mechanism of medical metal materials for promoting endothelial cell vascularization, so as to lay a foundation for the subsequent research and development of various medical metal materials for promoting angiogenesis. METHODS: Related articles were searched from PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, and Wanfang databases with the key words of “medical metal materials OR alloy”, “stent OR scaffold”, “vascularization OR angiogenesis”, “molecular mechanism OR signaling pathway”, “endothelial cells” in English and Chinese. Finally, 76 articles were included and analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The metal ions released during the degradation of implanted medical metal materials can affect angiogenesis by promoting the proliferation, migration, adhesion and tube formation ability of endothelial cells. (2) Magnesium, zinc, copper, strontium, cobalt and other metal ions can induce angiogenesis by activating Wnt, PI3K/Akt, MAPK, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α/vascular endothelial growth factor and other signaling pathways, upregulating the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, platelet derived growth factor, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α and other angiogenic factors, and promoting the production of angiogenic related cytokines. (3) The immune response induced by implantation not only affects the stability of the implant material, but also affects the effect of vascularization and osteogenesis. (4) The concentration of metal ions can affect the process of angiogenesis. The rapid degradation of metal materials and the accumulation of metal ions can lead to cytotoxicity. Determining the optimal concentration of metal ions to promote vascularization and osteogenic differentiation is the key to the development of multifunctional metal materials. (5) Improving the corrosion resistance of metal materials and regulating the release rate of metal ions by means of alloying and surface modification are beneficial to creating a good microenvironment for osteogenesis and angiogenesis and accelerating tissue repair and regeneration. (6) Although the mechanism of metal-promoting angiogenesis is abundant, the specific molecular mechanism is not completely clear and further research is still needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A low-grade copper-cobalt oxide ore containing 0. 98% Cu and 0. 07% Co from Congo(DRC), Africa was leached via sodium sulfite enhanced reduction-leaching technology. The effect of process parameters on leaching under conventional sulfuric acid leaching system was emphatically studied. The experimental results show that under the conditions of initial sulfuric acid concentration of 2 mol/L, liquid-solid ratio of 2 : 1, - 0. 074 mm proportion of 68. 27%,adding 4% reducing agent, total leaching time of 6 h and leaching temperature of 80 °C, the optimal leaching rate of Cu and Co can reach 96. 50% and 85. 21%, respectively. Per ton raw ore acid consumption of 305. 09 kg. The residual cobalt in leaching residue mainly occurs in sulphur-copper-cobalt ore and limonite, while the cobalts, in hydrocobalt ore and copper-cobalt hard manganese ore are basically leached. Aiming at a foreign nickel-cobalt ore resource, based on the identification of the nature of the ore, the process flow of “raw ore scrubbing-cyclone classification-spiral roughing-shaking table selection-magnetic separation and iron removal” is adopted. For many years of production and application of the process flow, when the grades of nickel, cobalt, and ferrochromium of the raw ore are 0.93%, 0.18%, 3.25%, and 14.95%, respectively, the nickel and cobalt recovery rates of light minerals reach 97.60% and 96.08%, respectively, and the chromium content is only 1.19%, which creates favorable conditions for the subsequent wet recovery of nickel and cobalt. At the same time, a chromium concentrate with a chromium grade of 32.13% and a recovery rate of 62.62%, an iron concentrate with an iron grade of 61.94% and an iron recovery rate of 24.48% were obtained, realizing the comprehensive recycling and utilization of this nickel-cobalt ore resource.

SOLID state batteries , *LITHIUM cobalt oxide , *INTERFACIAL resistance , *ENERGY density , *OXIDE coating , *TRANSITION metal oxides , *ALUMINUM-lithium alloys , *COBALT - Abstract
Oxide based solid state battery possesses the advantage of high energy density and safety. However, high interfacial impedance is the biggest obstacle to the development of oxide based solid state batteries. In this study, aluminum and polyvinyl oxide modification layers were used to deal with the high resistance of the anode and cathode interfaces respectively, thus reducing the polarization of the battery. On the anode side, due to the high reactivity of aluminum and lithium, the interfacial resistance was reduced from the original 632.5 Ω/cm² to 31.2 Ω/cm², On the cathode side, due to the good ductility of the polyvinyl oxide film buffer layer, which provided ideal interface flexible contact, the resistance of the interface was reduced from the original 1 457.2 Ω/cm² to 60.3 Ω/cm². The total impedance of the whole battery was reduced from the original 1 638.1 Ω/cm² to 298.7 Ω/cm². Due to the reduced interfacial resistance, the cycle stability of the lithium cobalt oxide/lithium metal battery was significantly improved. After 100 cycles at 0.1C, the capacity retention rate was increased from only 43.3% to 95.1%. The capacity retention of the 1C cycling after 500 cycles was increased from 5.1% to 72.3%. COPPER , *LAMINATED metals , *ELECTROCHEMICAL sensors , *COBALT oxides , *ALKALINE solutions , *CARBON electrodes , *COBALT , *COPPER oxide - Abstract
CuCo-MOF nanofibers are synthesized by one-step solvent blending process at room temperature. Then CuCo-MOF nanofibers are used as the precursors, carbon nanosheets (Cu (Ⅱ) Co (Ⅱ) @C) uniformly loaded with nano-sized copper oxide and cobalt oxide are obtained by calcination at high temperature in air. Cu (Ⅱ) Co (Ⅱ) @C is modified on the glassy carbon electrode to directly catalyze glucose in alkaline solution. Because CuO and CoO are uniformly and firmly embedded on the carbon nanosheets, the agglomeration of catalyst is prevented, which greatly improves the specific surface area, and increases the catalytic active site. Meanwhile, due to the synergistic effect of copper and cobalt bimetals in the carbon nanosheet material, the enzyme free glucose sensor has excellent electrical conductivity and excellent catalytic performance. The detection range of the non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors for glucose is 0. 03 μmol/L~13. 6 mmol/L, the detection limit is 0. 01 μmol/L (S/N=3), and the sensitivity is 10. 56 mA·L (/ cm2·mmol) . In addition, the non-enzyme sensor also has good anti-interference and high stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HYDROGEN oxidation , *MANGANESE , *NICKEL , *ZINC , *HYDROGEN peroxide , *LEACHING , *CADMIUM , *COBALT - Abstract
The multi metal cobalt residue produced by zinc hydrometallurgy is treated by primary sulfuric acid leaching and secondary high cobalt residue neutralization. The leachate with high cobalt content is successively treated by hydrogen peroxide oxidation to remove iron, zinc powder replacement to remove cadmium, nickel removal reagent to remove nickel, sodium persulfate selective oxidation to remove manganese, and sodium persulfate oxidation to deposit cobalt, to realize the separation and recovery of cadmium, cobalt, nickel and zinc in the residue. The results show that under the optimal acid leaching conditions of sulfuric acid concentration of 150 g/L, temperature of 80 ℃ leaching time of 120 min, cadmium and nickel in the leaching solution can be removed to less than 0. 1 mg/L, the content of cadmium in the cadmium residue is as high as 57. 61%, the content of nickel in the nickel residue is 10. 74%, the rate of cobalt precipitation by sodium persulfate is 99. 98%, and the content of cobalt in the cobalt residue is 49. 75%. The liquid after cobalt precipitation can be returned to the zinc hydrometallurgy production system to recover metal zinc and realize the separation and recovery of metal resources in the residue.
