Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is an aggressive treatment which can induce considerable physical and psychological stresses. Patients face various problems in self care and psychological adjustment after discharge from the hospital. The purpose of this study was to explore the cognition, needs, satisfaction, and emotional responses toward home care in BMT patients and the factors influencing them. Forth BMT patients were enrolled from the outpatient clinic of BMT in a medical center. A descriptive research design was adopted. Cognition, needs, satisfaction, anxiety and depression for home care in these patients were collected by questionaires. The results showed that BMT patients had inadequate knowledge about how to care for themselves at home. High need and low satisfaction on disease adjustment and home care were found in these patients. All patients experienced anxiety and depression. Occupation, education, and socioeconomic status were found to affect patient's cognition. Religious belief influenced needs and satisfaction for home care in these patients. Sex and social-economic status emotional reaction of patients. This study will help health personnel understand the cognition, needs and satisfaction for home care in BMT patients. It can be used as a reference for organizing discharge plan and extending the continuity of care for BMT patients.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare disease of unknown etiology, characterized by episodic and progressive chondritis, ocular and audiovestibular involvement, and occasional cardiovascular abnormalities. The inflammation typically involves the cartilage of the ears, nose, trachea, larynx, ribs, joints, and Eustachian tubes. The major clinical features include auricular chondritis, arthritis, nasal chondritis, ocular inflammation, chondritis of the respiratory tract, audiovestibular damage, and cardiovascular disorders. RP occurs predominantly in Caucasians and is uncommon in Oriental patients. Two cases of RP have previously been reported in Taiwan. We report one Taiwanese patient who was diagnosed with RP according to the criteria proposed by Damiani and Levine. The patient has bilateral auricular chondritis, episcleritis, and uveitis. Successful treatment was accomplished with systemic corticosteroid and topical corticosteroid eye drops. At an outpatient visit one year and ten months after discharge, there was no evidence of recurrence.

The use of stainless steel crown for the restoration of primary molars is widely accepted in pediatric dentistry. There has been a concern regarding their effect on the health of the gingival tissue. It is a possibility that the preformed crown may be a contributing cause of gingivitis. This study evaluated one hundred and thirty-seven crowns in forty-five patients who had received pedodontic treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The results indicated that the majority of stainless steel crowns had one or more defects, with crown crimping being the most common error. According to what the paired t-test showed, non-ideal crowns indicated that the gingival index was significantly higher than the entire mouth and control teeth. However the supragingival plaque accumulation of these teeth was significant lower than the entire mouth and control teeth. There was only a moderate positive correlation between supragingival plaque and gingivitis. The operator is necessary to adapt the stainless steel crown margin as closely as possible to the tooth and to avoid the mechanical defect of a crown. It minimizes the irritation of gingival tissue and diminishes the bacterial adherence of subgingival plaque, therefore preserving the health of gingival tissue.

The use of the etching technique and an enamel bonding agent may effectively reduce microleakage of the cavity wall. However, the reduction of marginal leakage relating to class V cavities, is still unsatisfactory according to the dental literature. Due to the structural difference between the dentin and the enamel, though many new dentin bonding agents have been developed lately, none of them work perfectly. In this experiment, the "silver staining technique" was used to investigate the degree of microleakage in class V resin restorations which were bonded with 3 different dentin bonding agents (Scotchbond, Scotchbond 2 and Denthesive). The sample consists of 21 caries free human molars which were divided into 3 groups: 1) Scotchbond v. s. Scotchbond 2, 2) Scotchbond v. s. Denthesive, 3) Scotchbond 2 v. s. Denthesive. Both buccal and lingual surfaces were prepared for class V cavities. The cavities were then filled with composite resin Silux, and immersed in 50% silver nitrate solution for 2 hours, and followed by washing with distilled water. After that these teeth were immersed in photodeveloping solution under the fluorescent light for 3 hours. On finishing, they were washed again, sectioned vertically into mesial and distal halves with a Isomet sectioner and put under a microscope and evaluated for the degree of microleakage with Dr. Going's method. On statistical analysis, the results of this study showed that the degree of microleakage was not significantly different among the 3 dentin bonding agents in class V resin restorations, either on the gingival wall or the occlusal wall.

The preparation of milligram quantities of three vitamin D3 isomers, previtamin D3, lumisterol3 and tachysterol3, were carried out in a laboratory scale first by irradiating 7-dehydrocholesterol in a phototherapy chamber equipped with UVB lamps, followed by using a two-step high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a semi-preparative normal phase column and an analytical reverse-phase column. The final products obtained were identified by UV spectrophotometry and HPLC. According to the detection limits for the three isomers, no contamination with any other isomers was detected in the previtamin D3, lumisterol3 and tachysterol3 preparations, except that a very small amount of vitamin D3, constituting no more than 0.25% of the product, was found in previtamin D3 preparation.

Light-curing composite resin restorations with acid etching technique and bonding agents cannot completely reduce the degree of microleakage. One initial report by Dr. Mclean (1985) describing glass ionomers as Class V cavity liners suggested that this product was superior to a resin/dentin bond to avert marginal leakage under a light curing composite. In this study, Wu's silver staining technique was used to evaluate the effect of glass ionomer liner on microleakage of light curing composite-Silux. Twenty one caries-free human molar teeth were selected for study. The Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and the lingual surface of each tooth. Teeth were divided into 3 groups. Group I: Scotchbond/Silux and Liner/Scotchbond/Silux. Group II: Scotchbond/Silux and Hybond. Group III: Liner/Scotchbond/Silux and Hybond. The degree of microleakage were evaluated with Dr. Going's method by three dentists. The results of this study indicate that Ketac bond Glass ionomer liner was ineffective as a restoration in resisting microleakage on the gingival wall of cavities.

During 1969, a total of 1,476 fecal and rectal swab specimens was collected from children with diarrhea and 249 strains of shigella were isolated. The incidence was 16.9%. The serotypes of 249 strains were: Shigella dysenteriae, 1.6% (4 strains); S. flexneri, 73.1% (182 strains); S. boydii, 3.2 (8 strains) and S. sonnei, 22.1% (55 strains). There was no marked difference of the isolation rate throughout the whole year. The susceptibility of shigella isolates to chemotherapeutic agents were also investigated. The percentage of the strains susceptible to gentamicin was 97.2%; to cephaloridine, 93.2%; to kanamycin, 91.9%; to colistin, 91.6%; to hetacillin, 88.4%; to ampicillin, 82.4% and to nalidixic acid, 79.9%. The other tested chemotherapeutic agents were less effective.
