5. Geochemical Characteristics, Pollution Assessment, and Source Apportionment of Heavy Metals in Soils of Typical Urban Areas.

To explore the distinctive features and ecological hazards associated with heavy metal contamination in urban terrains, a comprehensive survey was conducted involving the collection of 4 432 surface soil samples from Lanshan District, Linyi City, Shandong Province. The analysis encompassed the quantification of heavy metal constituents alongside the determination of pH levels. Utilizing geostatistical techniques, the geo-accumulation index (I
geo ) and the potential ecological risk index (RI) were calculated. These methodologies enabled a detailed examination of the geochemical attributes and pollution intensities of the soil's heavy metal content. To elucidate the origins of soil heavy metals within the study area, both the absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were employed for comprehensive analysis. The outcomes revealed that the average concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg in the study area were 60.90, 27.90, 24.30, 69.60, 0.15, 33.80, 7.20, and 0.045 6 mg/kg, respectively. The order of variation among these elements was as Hg>Pb>Cu>Cd>Zn>As>Ni>Cr. Based on the analysis conducted by the Igeo , it was found that there were 75, 30, and 29 sampling sites where Hg, Pb, and Cd pollution reached moderate to severe levels, respectively. This signifies the presence of significant point-source pollution. The average RI calculated was 130.89, suggesting a moderate ecological risk. Specifically, Hg contributed 49.74% and Cd contributed 26.67% to the overall risk, highlighting these two elements as the primary ecological risk factors within the study area. The APCS-MLR and PMF models uniformly pinpointed the origins of heavy metals in the study area. Cr and Ni were sourced from natural geological processes, Cu and Zn were traced back to industrial activities, Cd and Pb were linked to transportation-related emissions, As had contributions from both natural and mining activities, and Hg was found to have been deposited from atmospheric sources. In summary, human interventions have significantly shaped the spatial distribution of heavy metals within the soil of study area. While the overall soil environmental quality in this region appears to be relatively satisfactory, it is imperative to closely monitor and manage the potential ecological hazards posed by Hg and Cd pollution due to their adverse impacts on the ecosystem. Intervertebral disc degeneration is widely recognized as one of the main causes of lower back pain. Intervertebral disc cells are the primary cellular components of the discs, responsible for synthesizing and secreting collagen and proteoglycans to maintain the structural and functional stability of the discs. Additionally, intervertebral disc cells are involved in maintaining the nutritional and metabolic balance, as well as exerting antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects within the intervertebral discs. Consequently, intervertebral disc cells play a crucial role in the process of disc degeneration. When these cells are exposed to oxidative stress, mitochondria can be damaged, which may disrupt normal cellular function and accelerate degenerative changes. Mitochondria serve as the powerhouse of cells, being the primary energy-producing organelles that control a number of vital processes, such as cell death. On the other hand, mitochondrial dysfunction may be associated with various degenerative pathophysiological conditions. Moreover, mitochondria are the key site for oxidation-reduction reactions. Excessive oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species can negatively impact on mitochondrial function, potentially leading to mitochondrial damage and impaired functionality. These factors, in turn, triggers inflammatory responses, mitochondrial DNA damage, and cell apoptosis, playing a significant role in the pathological processes of intervertebral disc cell degeneration. This review is focused on exploring the impact of oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species on mitochondria and the crucial roles played by oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species in the pathological processes of intervertebral disc cells. In addition, we discussed current cutting-edge treatments and introduced the use of mitochondrial antioxidants and protectants as a potential method to slow down oxidative stress in the treatment of disc degeneration. To obtain the tissue engineering scaffold imitating the buckling structure of collagen fibers, poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) was used to prepare electrospun oriented fiber membranes, and the fiber membranes were curled with hot ethanol solution to obtain the buckling structure, and the gas products of the chemical reaction were fluffed to increase the fiber gap, so as to better simulate the structural morphology of the extracellular matrix. The performance characteristics of fluffy and wavy PPDO fiber membranes were evaluated by testing and characterizing the performance of four different structures of PPDO fiber membranes. The results show that compared with PPDO oriented fibers, the water contact angle of the fluffy wavy PPDO fiber membrane decreases from (125.26±2.33)° to (93.16±7.06)°, the longitudinal tensile strength increases from (4.13±0.28) MPa to (5.31±0.32) MPa, the transverse tensile strength increases from (0.18±0.01) MPa to (0.25±0.02) MPa, and the cell proliferation rate is still greater than 80%. It shows that its hydrophilicity and tensile properties are significantly improved, and the fiber membrane has excellent biocompatibility, which proves the great potential of its use in tissue engineering.
