Objective: To quantitate the association between birth weight and phenotypes of physical indicators in adulthood, i.e. BMI and waist circumference (WC) and to what degree genetic or environmental factors affect birth weight-obesity association. Methods: A total of 6 623 gender matched twin pairs aged 25 to 79 years were recruited through the Chinese National Twin Registry. The twins reported their own birth weight, current height and weight, and WC using a self-administered questionnaire. BMI was calculated according to the self-reports of body height and weight. Within twin-pair design was used to quantitate the association between birth weight and phenotypes related to obesity while bivariate structural equation models were used to decompose the phenotype correlation. Results: After adjusted for multiple factors, twin-pair analyses within monozygotic (MZ) showed that, on average, a 1.0 kg increase in birth weight corresponded to an increase of 0.33 kg/m(2) in BMI and 0.95 cm in WC in adulthood ( P <0.001). Bivariate structural equation models showed significant positive unique environmental correlation between birth weight and the two obesity-related phenotypes. Conclusion: The study supported the role of twin-specific supply line factors on relationship between birth weight and physical indicators in adulthood.

Objective: To investigate whether genetic polymorphisms in the microsomal epoxide hydrolase gene (EPHX1) and the glutathione S-transferase theta1 gene (GSTT1) are associated with low birth weight in neonates., Methods: Using standard questionnaires, 246 singleton live born mother-neonates pairs (73 cases were mother-low birth weight neonate pairs and 173 controls were mother-non low birth weight neonate pairs) were investigated by the trained field workers with case-control study at the hospital in Anqing, Anhui Province, China between 1998 and 1999. A total of 246 neonates were genotyped for genetic polymorphisms in the EPHX1 gene and the GSTT1 gene by a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate the association of the genetic polymorphisms in the EPHX1 gene and the GSTT1 gene with neonatal low birth weight, adjusting for maternal age, education, parity, neonatal sex and gestational age., Results: EPHX1 His139His homozygote was not associated with low birth weight among neonates, compared with EPHX1 His139Arg heterozygote/Arg139Arg homozygote before and after adjustment confounders. GSTT1 absent genotype group also was not associated with low birth weight among neonates, compared with GSTT1 present genotype group before and after adjustment confounders. When both EPHX1 139 polymorphism and GSTT1 polymorphism were considered, a significant reduction in birth weight was found among neonates with EPHX1 His139His homozygote and GSTT1 absent genotype (OR=3.46, P=0.035)., Conclusion: The combination between genetic polymorphisms in the EPHX1 gene and the GSTT1 gene in neonates is significantly associated with neonatal low birth weight.

The genotypes of 117 Nanchang White pigs and 361 Large Yorkshire pigs at GH 2 locus were detected by PCR-RFLP. The PCR products were cut by Apa I, and produced two alleles: A(449 + 101 + 55 bp), and B(316 + 133 + 101 + 49 bp). Effects of different genotypes on some important production traits involving the birth weight, 2-month body weight, 6-month body weight, corrected back-fat thickness, average back-fat thickness, feed to gain ratio and lean percentage were analyzed. The results showed that in Nanchang White pigs, no significant differences were observed between different genotypes and different growth and carcass traits; while in Large Yorkshire, the pigs with BB genotype had more lean percentage than pigs with AA genotype (P < 0.05).
