Cancer related anemia (CRA) is a common side effect in patients with tumors, the incidence of which is related to tumor type, treatment regimen, the duration of chemotherapy, etc. The pathogenesis of CRA has not been fully defined. CRA may lead to chemotherapy dose reduction or may even delay chemotherapy. Patients with CRA require red blood cell transfusion, thus increasing the treatment cost, reducing the efficiency of chemotherapy and the patient's quality of life, and shortening the survival time. The main treatments of CRA include red blood cell transfusion, iron supplements, erythropoietin, and so on. Based on recent literature and clinical studies, the expert committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association drew up the consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of anemia related to tumor in China (2023 edition). The 2023 consensus incorporates the latest evidence-based medicine evidence and Traditional Chinese Medicine related content and aims to provide more reliable diagnosis and treatment plans for Chinese oncologists to help improve CRA and the quality of life in patients with cancer.

Objective: To make a cost-benefit analysis on anemia intervention with iron-fortified soy sauce in 15-54 years old women., Methods: The study was conducted in Deqing county, Zhejiang province in 2012-2013. A total 585 women as sampling size were estimated with statistical model and randomly selected by probability proportionate to size sampling. Hemoglobin were measured before intervention and after 15 months. The cost of the intervention project were collected with manpower, communication and other invest. The benefit was estimated with profiling model., Results: After the intervention, the anemia prevalence of sampled women decreased from 31.1% to 21.9%(P<0.01). The major cost of the project was 156 400 RMB, and total benefits result ing from projects were 1 448 485 RMB. The cost-benefit ratio of the project is 1∶9.49. If investing one yuan can produce economic benefits of nearly 9.49 yuan, therefore, the intervention projectis worth to be scaling up. Sensitivity analysis showed the result of this study was stable., Conclusion: The intervention can significantly reduce the prevalence of anemia in women, and reduce the economic burden of the diseases. .

Objective: To systematically review the nutritional effect of YYB on infants and young children in poor rural regions., Methods: Medline, PubMed, Cochrane Library, CNKI and other sources of nutrition and health information were retrieved with the predetermined key words. The quality of the obtained literatures was evaluated with the criteria established in this study. RveMan 5.3 was used in the meta analysis., Results: Thirteen groups of qualified data from nine YYB intervention studies were used. The results showed that YYB significantly increased the level of Hb (MD = 0.94, 95% CI 0.94-1.15, P < 0.01), reduced the prevalence of anemia (RR = 0.34, 95% CI 0.25-0.46, P < 0.01). YYB showed no significant effect on WAZ and HAZ, but significant increase of WHZ was demonstrated by the analytical data (MD = 0.42, 95% CI 0.19-0.65, P < 0.01). Additionally YYB intervention groups also showed the prevalence of underweight (RR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.32-0.88, P < 0.05)., Conclusion: As an infant complementary food supplement, YYB improved the nutrition status of infants and young children including increased Hb level, declined anemia prevalence and wasting rate.

Objective: To study the application of decision tree in the research of anemia among rural children., Methods: In the Enterprise Miner module of software SAS 8.2, 3000 observations were sampled from database and the decision tree model was built. The model using decision tree of CART bases on Gini impurity index., Results: The misclassification rate of decision tree model was, training set 21.2%, validation set 21.9%. The Root ASE of decision tree model was, training set 0.399, validation set 0.404. The area under the ROC curve was larger than the reference line. The diagnostic chart showed that the corresponding percentage was higher than the other. The decision tree model selected 9 important factors and ranked them by their power, among which mother of anemia (1.00) was the most important factor. Others were children's age (0.75), time of ablactation (0.53), mother's age (0.32), the time of egg supplementation (0.26), category of the project county (0.26), the time of milk supplementation (0.16), number of people in the family (0.13), the education status of the mother (0.12). Decision tree produced simple and easy rules that might be used to classify and predict in the same research., Conclusion: Decision tree could screen out the important factors of anemia and identify the cutting-points for factors. With the wide application of decision tree, it would exhibit important application values in the research of the rural children health care.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of the early use of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhu-EPO) on neurobehavioral development in preterm infants., Methods: Forty-four preterm infants (30 males and 14 females) were randomly divided into two groups: Rhu-EPO treatment and untreated control (n=22 each). From postnatal day 7, the Rhu-EPO treatment group received intravenous rhu-EPO (250 IU/kg3 times weekly) for 4 weeks. A Neonatal Behavioral Neurological Assessment (NBNA) was performed at 40 weeks of corrected gestational age. A Gesell Development Schedule was used to evaluate neurological development 6 and 12 months after birth., Results: The NBNA score in the rhu-EPO treatment group (36.20+/-0.75) was significantly higher than that in the control group (34.40+/-1.05) at 40 weeks of corrected gestational age (P<0.05). The developmental quotient of fine motor in the rhu-EPO treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group 6 months after birth (P<0.05). By 12 months after birth, the developmental quotient of gross motor, fine motor and language in the rhu-EPO treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05)., Conclusions: Early use of Rhu-EPO can promote neurobehavioral development in preterm infants.

Anemia in the elders is an important public health crisis which more attention should be paid to in the aging society. Anemia decreased physical performances, impaired cognitive functions, increased rates of hospitalization and mortality and affected quality of life. Causes of anemia in this population were complex as well as multiple. Chronic diseases maybe the most common reason of anemia in elders, but its mechanism was too complex; anemia caused by nutrition deficiency was clear and easily prevented and well treated. Improving nutrition status could benefit the reduction of anemia prevalence, and thus it was significant that the life quality of elderly persons could be improved and a healthy aging society could be promoted.

Objective: To evaluate a proper processed method of Radix Polygoni Multiflori by pharmacodynamic action., Methods: Model of blood deficiency rats were used in this experiment. The reagents were alcohol extracts of radix polygoni multiflori and its dreferent processing drugs made without any adjuvants in the first experiment. The reagents were alcohol extracts of te processing drugs made without any adjuvants and that made with decoction of black soybean in the second experiment. Their effecacy on model blood deficiency rats was observed., Results: It was showed that some of radix polygoni multiflori praeparata could nourish the blood. The effecacy was different for alcohol extracts of variously processing drugs. Decoction of black soybean could reinforce effectiveness of radix polygoni multiflori praeparata. But it was related to the processed method., Conclusion: The processed method directly influences the pharmacodynamic action of radix polygoni multiflori praeparata.

Objective: To investigate the effect of AMI on hematopoiesis in anemic mice and explore the possible mechanisms., Methods: Anemic mice model resulted from myelosuppression by irradiation and cytotoxic chemotherapeutic compounds were randomly divided into three groups: treated group I, treated group II and anemic control group. Intraperitoneal doses of AMI(500 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg) were given to the treated group, and equal doses of physiological saline were given to the anemic control group. On 7 days after treatment, the count of whole blood cells and bone marrow cells were determined by blood auto-analyzer. The numbers of CFU-GM (granulocyte and macrophage colony forming unit), CFU-E (colony forming unit-erythroid), BFU-E (burst forming unit-erythroid), CFU-Meg(colony forming unit-megakaryocyte) were determined by using technique of hematopoietic progenitor cells culture in vitro. Expression of anti-apoptosis protein BcL-XL and BcL-2 in BMC were determined by immunohistochemistry., Results: RBC, HB, PLT (P < 0.05) and BMC (P < 0.01) in treated group I were significantly higher than that of anemic control. The number of CFU-E, BFU-E and CFU-Meg as well as expression of anti-apoptosis protein BcL-XL of BMC in treated group I also were significantly higher than that of anemic control (P <0. 05 or P <0. 01), while numbers of CFU-E as well as expression of anti-apoptosis protenin BcL-XL of BMC in treated group II were higher than that of anemic control (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: AMI can lesson apoptosis of bone marrow cells and promote hematopoietic progenitor cells to differentiate along the erythroid and megakaryocytoid line by up-regulating expression of antiapoptosis protein BcL-XL of BMC.

Folate is an essential nutrient of the B complex group of vitamins, as a cofactor, involving in numerous important intracellular reactions. The role of folate in human nutrition has become increasingly important with recent researches. While the relation between folate and anemia had been substantiated long ago, the difference of the folate nutritional status among populations and regions and the application of folate to preventing and curing anemia have not been definitely stated. However, scientists have always been active in detecting the status of folate nutrition of different populations and exploring practical, effective and scientific measures to prevent anemia for half a century. The surveillance for folate nutritional status and its application to preventing or curing anemia in recent years were summarized. In this article, it is suggested that the nutritional status of folate of the people at risk should be carefully monitored and effective measures be taken promptly in our country.

In order to investigate the effect of vitamins-minerals supplementation on the nutritional status of Chinese women, 252 villagers aged 20-50 years old were selected as the participants in the study in Longli County, Guizhou Province. Within Twenty two weeks, half of the participants received the supplements and half had placebo. The results showed that in comparison with the control, the women with supplementation represented a higher urine excretion of vitamin B1 and B2 after a loading dosage and, a higher concentration of serum iron and zinc and a lower prevalence of anemia. They kept their facial moisture and grease better than those of the controls. They also felt better in sleeping, having appetite, and doing physical activities. The results indicated that the supplementation of vitamins-minerals might improve the nutritional status of rural Chinese women.

From Sept. 1987 to Oct. 1988, a collaborative program of preventing and treating the common complications of nulliparous twin gestations, namely pregnancy induced hypertension, anemia, premature labour and postpartum hemorrhage was carried out in nine hospitals according to the same plan. There were 91 subjects who met the above criteria (treated group) and 99 cases not included in the plan (control group). The incidence of pregnancy induced hypertension was 33%, anemia 13.2%, postpartum hemorrhage 6.6%, and perinatal mortality 22%, in the treated group. The mean duration of pregnancy was 38.38 weeks (268.7 days) and the mean neonatal birth weight was 2725.8 g. The rate of maternal and fetal complications and prenatal mortality in the treated group were significantly lower than those of the control group.
