Objective: To assess the consistency of the subjective evaluation of malocclusion severity by the Chinese orthodontic experts., Methods: Sixty-nine Chinese orthodontic experts subjectively evaluated the malocclusion severity for 120 cases which were selected randomly from 6 University orthodontic clinics by checking each case's pretreatment records including study cast, lateral head film, panoramic radiograph, facial photographs and patient chart. Each orthodontist was asked to independently rate the severity of every case into five grades: mild, mildly moderate, moderate, severely moderate and severe. Rating data was finally gathered to evaluate the intra-judge's reliability and the inter-judges' consistency., Results: Weighted Kappa test revealed that 8.33% orthodontists showed excellent intra-judge's reliability (Kappa ≥ 0.81), 78.33% orthodontists showed good intra-judge's reliability (Kappa ≥ 0.61) and 96.67% specialists displayed general intra-judge's reliability (Kappa ≥ 0.41). And intra-class correlation coefficient demonstrated a high level of inter-judges' consistency (r=0.989, P<0.01)., Conclusion: Good intra-judge's reliability and inter-judges' consistency can be demonstrated in the subjective evaluation of malocclusion severity by the Chinese orthodontic experts, which could the basis for establishing the objective grading system of malocclusion severity.

Objective: To investigate the association between rs751141 gene polymorphisms in EPHX2 gene and essential hypertension in Kazak and Han in Xinjiang., Methods: A total of 267 essential hypertensive patients in Kazaks, 368 essential hypertensive patients in Hans, 284 normotensive controls in Kazaks and 348 normotensive controls in Hans were enrolled in this study. TaqMan assay was used to detect the rs751141 G/A gene polymorphisms of EPHX2 gene., Results: The rs751141 G/A genotype frequencies for GA + AA genotypes was 40.2 percent in essential hypertensive subjects and 52.0 percent in control subjects in Hans, respectively. The genotype frequencies were significant difference between the two groups in Hans in Xinjiang (P < 0.01). The rs751141G/A gene polymorphism had no significant difference between essential hypertensive patients and normotensive controls in Kazaks in Xinjiang (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The essential hypertension in Kazaks in Xinjiang is not associated with rs751141G/A gene polymorphism of EPHX2 gene, but the essential hypertension in Hans in Xinjiang is associated with rs751141G/A allele gene polymorphism of EPHX2 gene. A type of rs751141 allele gene polymorphism may be the independent protective factor of essential hypertension in Hans in Xinjiang.

An investigation was conducted on the species composition and population diameter-class structure of a typical secondary Betula albo-sinensis forest in Xiaolongshan of west Qinling Mountains, and the spatial distribution pattern and interspecific correlations of the main populations were analyzed at multiple scales by the O-ring functions of single variable and double variables. In the test forest, B. albo-sinensis was obviously dominant, but from the analysis of DBH class distribution, the B. albo-sinensis seedlings were short of, and the natural regeneration was very poor. O the contrary, the regeneration of Abies fargesii and Populus davidianas was fine. B. albo-sinensis and Salix matsudana had a random distribution at almost all scales, while A. fargesii and P. davidianas were significantly clumped at small scale. B. albo-sinensis had positive correlations with A. fargesii and P. davidianas at medium scale, whereas S. matsudana had negative correlations with B. albo-sinensis, A. fargesii, and P. davidianas at small scale. No significant correlations were observed between other species. The findings suggested that the spatial distribution patterns of the tree species depended on their biological characteristics at small scale, but on the environmental heterogeneity at larger scales. In a period of future time, B. albo-sinensis would still be dominant, but from a long-term view, it was necessary to take some artificial measures to improve the regeneratio of B. albo-sinensis.

Objective: To investigate the displacement and stress distribution of upper incisors in three-dimensional (3D) space controlled by step-shaped vertical closing loop., Methods: The maxillary teeth and alveolar bone of a volunteer with normal occlusion were scanned with 3D spiral CT. Modeling and calculation were only carried out on right upper central incisor, lateral incisor and their alveolar bone in order to simplify the procedures. A 3D finite element model of archwire-brackets-upper incisors and periodontal tissues was developed using Ansys finite element package. Finally, a 3D finite element model of archwire-brackets-upper incisors and periodontal tissues was established based on mirror symmetry principle. The displacement of maxillary incisors and stress distribution in periodontal tissues were analyzed., Results: When step-shaped vertical closing loop was simply drew back 1 mm, the maximum displacement of upper central incisor in labial and lingual direction were 5.29 × 10(-2) and 0.71 × 10(-2) mm; 10.47 × 10(-3) and 10.20 × 10(-3) mm in gingival and occlusal direction, 10.26 × 10(-3) and 1.63 × 10(-3) mm in medial and distal direction; the maximum displacement of upper lateral incisor in labial and lingual direction were 3.31 × 10(-2) and 0.41 × 10(-2) mm, 10.52 × 10(-3) and 5.10 × 10(-3) mm in gingival and occlusal direction, 6.29 × 10(-3) and 4.64 × 10(-3) mm in medial and distal direction, the displacement trend of them were moving lingually and gingivally similar to bodily movement. The stress peach of upper central incisor, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were 31.35, 2.52 and 4.64 MPa, the stress peach of upper lateral incisor, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were 19.59, 1.28 and 4.12 Mpa, the stress distribution of them were similar and the periodontal ligament buffered the stress imposed on the tooth.

Field investigations on the phytoplankton community were carried out in July 2009 and January 2010 in Wujingang Region of Taihu Lake (WRTL). Results show that there are 46 genus, 24 families and 6 phylum phytoplankton were identified in wet season, which is mainly composed of the Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta, the average phytoplankton abundance of this season is 14. 8 x 10(6) cell/L. There are 29 genus, 18 families and 5 phylum phytoplankton were found in level season, and Diatoms were the dominant category, the average phytoplankton abundance of the season is 3 113 cell/L. It shows that a remarkable discrepancy in community and density between the two seasons. The principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to assess the phytoplankton community structure with regard to 8 aquatic environmental factors and their spatial distribution, which result on the key aquatic environmental quality factors show that NH4(+) -N and TN were the most extraordinary pollution factors which affect the phytoplankton community and WRTL was in extrophication level.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in tissues angiogenesis. The adaptation of animals to hypoxic environment is relative to the microvessel density (MVD) in tissues. To further explore the adaptation mechanisms of plateau zokor (Myospalax baileyi) to the hypoxic-hypercapnic burrows, the VEGF mRNA and the MVD in cerebral tissues of the plateau zokor were studied. Total RNA was isolated from liver, and VEGF cDNA was obtained by RT-PCR, then the VEGF cDNA was cloned and sequenced. The coding sequence of plateau pika (Ochotona curzniae), rat (Rattus norvegicus) and mouse (Mus musculus) VEGF cDNA are obtained from GenBank, and the nucleotide and amino acid sequence homology of plateau zokor VEGF cDNA coding sequence with that of plateau pika, rat and mouse were analyzed and compared by using of bioinformatics software. The VEGF mRNA was detected by real-time PCR, and the MVDs in cerebral tissues of the plateau zokor, plateau pika and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat were measured by immunohistochemical staining. The results showed that the open reading frame of the plateau zokor VEGF was 645 bp, and the coding sequence of the plateau zokor VEGF cDNA shared 92.1%, 93.6% and 93.8% nucleotide sequence homology to that of the plateau pika, rat and mouse, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequence of the plateau zokor VEGF cDNA was composed of 188 amino acids and the amino acids from 1 to 26 were signal peptide sequence. The plateau zokor VEGF188 was 90.2%, 94.9% and 94.4% homologous to that of plateau pika, rat and mouse. The level of VEGF mRNA in brain of the plateau zokor was significantly lower than that of SD rat, but there was no obvious difference in VEGF mRNA level between plateau zokor and plateau pika. The MVD in brain of the plateau zokor was markedly higher than that of plateau pika and SD rat. In conclusion, plateau zokor enhances its adaptation to the hypoxic environment by increasing the MVD. The level of VEGF mRNA in the brain of plateau zokor is lower than that of SD rat, which may be as a result of inhibition by the higher concentration of carbon dioxide in the burrow.

The characteristics of macrozoobenthic assemblages and their relationship with aquatic environmental factors in the 29 streams of the Lake Dianchi (LD) watershed in the wet season were studied. Biosurveys of macrozoobenthic assemblages during July and August 2009, as well as 17 mensal aquatic physicochemical parameters from September 2008 to August 2009 were carried out at 29 sampling sites. The objectives were to demonstrate the characteristics of macrozoobenthic assemblages in streams of the LD watershed in the wet season, to identify the key aquatic environmental factors affecting these assemblages, and to investigate the relationship of spatial patterns between the Shannon-Weaver diversity index of the assemblages and the assessment of aquatic environmental quality. Results identified 3 divisions, 7 families, and 8 genera of macrozoobenthos, including 4 families and 5 genera of Annelida, 2 families and 2 genera of Mollusca, and 1 family and 1 genus of Arthropoda. Among these, Limnodrilus (Annelida) , a tolerant species, was the dominant genus. TN, NH4(+)-N, TP, and DO were the key aquatic environmental factors affecting the macrozoobenthic assemblages, respectively 2.03-32.00, 0.34-26.66, 0.09-3.20, and 0.10-6.80 mg/L. The spatial patterns of the Shannon-Weaver diversity index of macrozoobenthic assemblages and the assessments of aquatic environmental quality were both greatest in the streams flowing into the east LD (Luolonghe, Laoyuhe, and Nanchonghe rivers), followed by those flowing into the south LD (Yunihe, Laochaihe, Baiyuhe, Cixianghe, Dongdahe, Zhonghe and Guchenghe rivers), and least in those flowing into the north LD (Wangjiaduiqu, Xinyunlianghe, Laoyunlianghe, Wulonghe, Daguanhe, Xibahe, Chuanfanghe, Cailianhe, Jinjiahe, Panlongjiang, Daqinghe, Haihe, Liujiabaoxianghe, Xiaoqinghe, Wujiabaoxianghe, Xiabahe, Laobaoxianghe, Xinbaoxianghe, and Maliaohe rivers).

Aim: To construct the eukaryotic expression vectors of RKIP plasmid and detect its expression in PC12 cells., Methods: The coding sequence of RKIP was generated by nested-PCR using total RNA extracted from the root ganglion neurons of rats. RKIP gene was cloned into the eukaryotic expression vector pcDNA3.0. After restriction enzyme analysis and sequence identification, the recombinant plasmid was transfected into PC12 cells with non-liposome mediated method by Vigofect. The expression of RKIP was detected by Western blot., Results: The results of enzyme analysis and sequencing both identified DNA sequence of recombinant plasmid pcDNA3.0-RKIP correctly. The expression of RKIP increased obviously after transfection into PC12 cells., Conclusion: The eukaryotic expression plasmid of pcDNA3.0-RKIP was constructed successfully and it can be sustainly expressed in PC12 cells. This provides experimental basis for further study on the neurological function of RKIP.

Objective: To detect the expression of RhoC and Rho kinase 1 (ROCK-1) in prostate carcinoma, and explore the possible mechanism of RhoC/ROCK-1 in the pathogenesis of prostate carcinoma., Methods: Tissue specimens from 73 patients with prostate carcinoma and corresponding paracancerous tissues were obtained by prostate cancer biopsy or radical prostatectomy. The expression of RhoC/ROCK-1 mRNA was detected by RT-PCR. Western blot and immunohistochemistry were performed to dertect the expression of RhoC/ROCK-1 protein. Eukaryotic expression plasmids of RhoC were constructed and transfected into PC-3M-2B4 cells. p-MAPK and p-Akt were detected by Western bolt., Results: The expression levels of RhoC and ROCK-1 mRNA in the prostate carcinomas were significantly higher than those in corresponding paracancerous tissues [72.6% (53/73) vs. 34.2% (25/73); 68.5% (50/73) vs. 38.4% (28/73), P < 0.01], respectively. The results indicated that RhoC/ROCK-1 mRNA expression had no significant correlation with Gleason grade. However, the expression of RhoC/ROCK-1 mRNA showed a significant positive correlation with distant metastasis. The RhoC/ROCK-1 protein expression in prostate cancer was also higher than corresponding paracancerous tissues, and showed a significant positive correlation with p-MAPK and p-Akt expression levels. In addition, p-MAPK and p-Akt expression levels were up-regulated in the transcripts., Conclusion: Expression levels of RhoC and ROCK-1 in prostate carcinoma are higher than those in corresponding paracancerous tissues, showing a significant positive correlation with distant metastasis. RhoC/ROCK-1 may be involved in the development, invasion and metastasis of prostate carcinoma.

The characteristics of levonorgestrel (LNG), low solubility and the quick degradation under ultraviolet, limited its study and application in rodent contraception. The inclusion complex of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) with LNG was investigated in present study. The inclusion complex was prepared by solution method and characterized by ultraviolet absorption spectrum and infrared spectrum spectra. And the stability was evaluated by being exposed to ultraviolet. The authors' results showed that the accurate and simple method of quantitative determination for LNG was established by ultraviolet spectrum, the molar ratio of the complex was 1:1 calculated from the phase solubility diagram, the stability constant was 187.3 L x mol(-1) at 25 degrees C, and the formation of the inclusion complex was validated by UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Moreover, the degradation rate of the inclusion complex was less than 5%, which was slower than the LNG monomer. The present study indicated that HP-beta-CD could be formed inclusion complexes with LNG and the solubility, and stability were obviously enhanced.

Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was adopted for the first time by our group for in situ diagnosis of the conversion of CH4-H2 under glow discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure with rotary electrodes. The emission of excited species such as excited radicals and atoms (C, CH, C2, H and H2) was detected in the spectra range of 300-700 nm. The spectrum of hydrogen atom was used to figure out the plasma excitation temperature by a Boltzmann plot scheme. It was evaluated that the excitation temperature of hydrogen plasmas under varied discharge conditions is in the range of 6300-6600 K. The electron density was calculated based on spectral profile of H lines and its order is about 10(20) m(-3).

Objective: To compare the clinical effects of different fixing methods for intertrochanteric fractures and make theoretical analysis., Methods: From June 2003 to June 2007, 321 patients with intertrochanteric fractures, male 132 and female 189, ranging in age from 20 to 93 years with an average of 56.8 years, were treated with different fixation including Richard nail (142 cases), proximal femora nail (PFN, 94 cases) and external fixator (85 cases). The clinical data of all the patients were retrospectively analyzed, including the incidence of complications, joint function of hip (according Kudema modified Merli D'Aubigne criteria)., Results: All patients were followed up from 10 months to 4 years with an average of 14 months. About the incidence of complications, there was significant difference between the external fixator group and the others two groups (P < 0.05); there was no significant difference between the Richard nail group and the PFN group (P > 0.05). There was significant difference in joint function of hip among three methods. PEN group was best than others two groups., Conclusion: There is the best clinical effects and lowest incidence of complications with PFN method, which is the better choice in treating intertrochanteric fractures.

Objective: To compare plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, and cystatin C levels in patients with or without coronary artery disease (CAD)., Methods: We recruited 87 CAD patients (39 with acute myocardial infarction and 48 with unstable angina pectoris) and 51 non-CAD controls. Plasma ADMA was measured by HPLC, cystatin C by particle-enhanced immunonephelometric assay (N Latex cystatin C, Dade Behring) with nephelometer (BNII, Dade Behring). CAD patients were further divided into low cystatin C group (< 1.0 mg/L, 36 cases) and high cystatin C group (> 1.0 mg/L, 51 cases)., Results: (1) The plasma levels of ADMA [(0.47 ± 0.15) µmol/L vs. (0.37 ± 0.15) µmol/L], SDMA [(0.39 ± 0.19) µmol/L vs. (0.28 ± 0.12) µmol/L] and cystatin C [(1.16 ± 0.32) mg/L vs. (0.73 ± 0.16) mg/L] were significantly higher in CAD patients than in controls (all P < 0.05). The plasma L-Arg was significantly lower in CAD patients than in controls [(59.4 ± 19.4) µmol/L vs. (83.7 ± 19.6) µmol/L, P < 0.05]. (2) Plasma ADMA was similar in CAD patients with low cystatin C level and controls [(0.42 ± 0.12) µmol/L vs. (0.39 ± 0.15) µmol/L, P = 0.251] and Plasma ADMA was significantly higher in CAD patients with high cystatin C level than in controls [(0.50 ± 0.17) µmol/L vs. (0.39 ± 0.15) µmol/L, P < 0.05]., Conclusion: ADMA levels were significantly increased only in CAD patients with elevated cystatin C levels but not in CAD patients with normal renal function. The reported relationship between coronary heart disease and ADMA may not be direct, but could be secondary due to reduced renal function.

Objective: To observe the impact of growth-factor hormone control on the outcome of acromegalic cardiomyopathy by reviewing cases from our own center and from literatures., Methods: Two cases of acromegalic cardiomyopathy from Tongji hospital and 29 acromegalic cardiomyopathy cases with fully accessible data retrieved from PubMed and CNKI websites were included in present study for analysis. They were divided into "Controlled (< 5 microg/L)" or "Uncontrolled" group according to the serum level of growth factor hormone after treatments. Outcome of patients was evaluated by symptom, NYHA class, LV size and function status., Results: Incidence of patients with improved symptoms and cardiac performance was significantly higher in "Controlled" group (18/19) compared to those in "Uncontrolled" group (0/12; P < 0.01, chi(2) = 27.1). Post-treatment growth-factor hormone level < 5 microg/L is significantly associated with a satisfactory outcome of acromegalic cardiomyopathy (r = 0.935, P < 0.01)., Conclusions: Control of serum growth-factor concentration to a value < 5 microg/L is critical and associated with a favorable outcome for patients with acromegalic cardiomyopathy.

The Chinese Museum of War Injuries is the only military medical museum in China which collects special weapons, conventional weapons, high-tech weapons and pathological specimens, materials and documents of human and animal injuries caused by military environments and military operations, amounting to 4,350 objects. The construction of the Chinese Museum of War Injuries played an important role in the aspects of military medical education and training, popularization of public health knowledge, preservation of military medical historical materials and opening up to the outside world etc, to which should priority attention should be paid to by the Chinese government and relevant military departments.

Objective: To analyze the characteristics of a new clinical syndrome, including throat infection, neck spinal disease, chest pain and cardiac response., Methods: A total of 165 patients with above mentioned symptoms admitted to Tongji hospital from 2003 to 2005 were included in this study and underwent further medical history inquiry, physical examination and laboratory tests. Eighty-five healthy subjects served as controls. Serum myocardial auto-antibodies against beta(1)-adrenoceptor, alpha-myosin heavy chain, M(2)-muscarinic receptor and adenine-nucleotide translocator were detected, inflammatory cytokines, high sensitivity C-reaction protein, serum antibodies against Coxsackie virus-B, cytomegalovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae were determined and lymphocyte subclasses were assayed by flow cytometry., Results: All patients had a complex of four symptoms or tetralogy: (1) persistent throat or upper respiratory tract infection; (2) neck pain; (3) chest pain; (4) chest depression or dyspnea, some of them with anxiety. Anti-myocardial auto-antibodies (AMCA) were present in all patients vs. 8% in controls. TNF-alpha, IL-1 and IL-6 were significantly higher in patients than controls (P < 0.01). CD3(+) and CD4(-)CD8(+) lymphocytes were significantly higher and CD56(+) lymphocytes lower in patients than those in controls (P < 0.01). The ratios of serum pathogen antibodies positive against Coxsackie virus-B, cytomegalovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae were all significantly higher in patients than in controls., Conclusions: These data led to identification of a persistent respiratory infection-related clinical syndrome, including persistent throat infection, neck spinal lesion, rib cartilage inflammation, symptoms of cardiac depression and dyspnea with or without anxiety.

Objective: To assess oral health-related quality of life in patients with fixed appliances., Methods: Orthodontic patients were asked to complete the scale of general conditions (Chinese version, questionnaire 1) and oral health impact profile (OHIP) -14 (Chinese version, questionnaire 2). Baseline data were collected at first visit and thereafter. The subjects finished questionnaire 2 at the 1st week, 4th week, 12th week and 24th week, respectively, after the fixed appliance was bonded. Data were analyzed to evaluate the various sample groups with different personal information and clinical parameters. Results were collated and analyzed using software package SPSS version 15.0., Results: The most common negative effect was physical pain [55/222 (27.8%)] and psychological discomfort [40/222 (18.0%)], mainly in the first month. The total scores at five time points were 3, 10, 7, 5 and 4, respectively. No difference was found in quality of life in patients between sixth month with fixed appliance and without appliance (P > 0.05). Age and education status affected the quality of life (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Fixed orthodontic appliance therapy affected patients' oral health-related quality of life during treatment. The quality of life in the first month of treatment was mostly compromised and was improved later.

Objective: To assess whether variants in the vascular endothelial growth actor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) gene confer susceptibility to stroke risk., Methods: Association between gene variant rs2305948 (Val297Ile) and the risk of stroke was investigated in a multi-center case-control study, which comprised of 1849 patients with stroke (812 cerebral atherothrombosis, 530 lacunar infarction, and 507 intracerebral hemorrhage) and 1798 controls, and then replicated in the second independent stroke study (327 cases and 327 controls). The effect of Val297Ile on the binding ability of VEGFR-2 to VEGF was determined by a radioligand binding assay., Results: The frequencies of carriers with variant 297Ile were significantly higher in patients with hemorrhagic stroke than in controls [297Val/Ile: 155(30.6%) versus 351 (19.5%), 297Ile/Ile: 18 (3.2%) versus 16 (1.0%); P < 0.01]. The variant 297Ile was significantly associated with increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (odds ratio 2.25, 95% confidence interval 1.70-2.96; P < 0.01), and replication in the second stroke study obtained similar results. The substitution of Val to Ile at the amino acid residue 297 led to an increased equilibrium dissolved constant between VEGF and its receptor VEGFR-2 [297Val (87 +/- 9) pmol/L versus 297Ile (195 +/- 36) pmol/L, P < 0.01]., Conclusions: The VEGFR-2 gene variants may serve as novel genetic markers for the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of CD151 gene delivery in promoting blood perfusion in swines after myocardial infarction., Methods: Swines received coronary artery ligation and intramyocardial injection with rAAV-CD151, rAAV-anti-CD151 or rAAV-GFP. Eight weeks after vector injection, Western blot, immunostaining and 13N-labeled NH3 PET were performed to detect gene expression and biological effects of various treatments., Results: High level of CD151 protein expression was detected in the rAAV-CD151 group. The capillary density in the rAAV-CD151 group [(83.8 +/- 6.7) n/mm2] was significantly higher than that in the control group [(33.2 +/- 4.5) n/mm2] and rAAV-GFP group [(41.6 +/- 5.6) n/mm2] (all P<0.05); the arteriole density in the rAAV-CD151 group [(16.4 +/- 2.5) n/mm2] was also higher than that in the control group [(6.6 +/- 2.3) n/mm2] and the rAAV-GFP group [(8.4 +/- 1.6) n/mm2] (all P<0.05). However, the lowest capillary density and arteriole density were evidenced in rAAV-anti-CD151 group. Myocardial blood perfusion was significantly increased in rAAV-CD151 group and significantly reduced in rAAV-anti-CD151 group (all P<0.05 vs. control)., Conclusion: Intramyocardial injection of rAAV-CD151 could enhance the myocardial express of CD151 protein, increase capillary and arteriole densities and improve blood perfusion in swine with myocardial infarction.

Aim: To study the development of changes for signaling molecules related to Raf/MEK/ERK pathway in hippocampus of rats after electromagnetic radiation, and investigate the mechanisms of radiation injury., Methods: Rats were exposed to X-HPM, S-HPM and EMP radiation source respectively, and animal model of electromagnetic radiation was established. Western blot was used to detect the expression of Raf-1, phosphorylated Raf-1 and phospholylated ERK., Results: The expression of Raf-1 down-regulated during 6 h-14 d after radiation, most significantly at 7 d, and recovered at 28 d. There was no significant difference between the radiation groups. The expression of phosphorylated Raf-1 and phosphorylated ERK both up-regulated at 6 h and 7 d after radiation, more significantly at 6 h, and the two microwave groups were more serious for phosphorylated ERK. During 6 h-14 d after S-HPM radiation, the expression of phosphorylated Raf-1 increased continuously, but phosphorylated ERK changed wavily, 6 h and 7 d were expression peak., Conclusion: Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway participates in the hippocampus injury induced by electromagnetic radiation. The excessive activation of ERK pathway may result in the apoptosis and death of neurons, which is the important mechanism of recognition disfunction caused by electromagnetic radiation.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and complication of ureteroscopic lithotripsy and ureteroscopic management for ureteral calculi after failed extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)., Methods: One hundred and thirty-six cases with ureteral calculi after failed ESWL and 189 cases with ureteral calculi were treated with ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL). Clinical data of two groups were analyzed retrospectively., Results: The mean operating time and therapeutic time in ESWL-URSL group was longer than that in URSL group, while the rate of polypi hyperplasia and open-surgery in ESWL-URSL group was 34.6%, 5.88% versus 28.3%, 1.59% in URSL group. There is no significant statistical difference in stone-free rate between two groups., Conclusion: Ureteroscopic management can be preferred for the patients with disadvantage of ESWL in some condition.

Objective: To observe the expression of P-selectin in the penile vascular epithelial cells and the morphological changes in the ultrastructure of the penile cavernous tissues of smoking rats, and to explore the pathogenesis of smoking-induced erectile dysfunction., Methods: Fifty healthy Wistar rats were randomly divided into a normal control, a long-term heavy smoking group, a long-term light smoking, a short-term heavy smoking and a smoking cessation group. Their erectile function was tested by subcutaneous injection of apomorphine (APO), the P-selectin expression in the penile vascular epithelial cells detected by ELISA and the morphological changes in the ultrastructure of the penile cavernous tissues observed under the transmission electron microscope (TEM)., Results: The levels of P-selectin were 10.78 +/- 1.71 ng/L, 62.62 +/- 5.95 ng/L, 40.06 +/- 3.97 ng/L, 41.37 +/- 4.06 ng/L and 22.80 +/- 3.15 ng/L respectively in the normal control, long-term heavy smoking, long-term light smoking, short-term heavy smoking and smoking cessation groups, with significant differences between the control group and the other four (P < 0.05). Electron microscopy showed abnormal arrangement of endothelia, penile cavernous sinuses and smooth muscle cells, disrupted continuity of endothelia, damaged ultrastructure of endothelial and smooth muscle cells in the penile cavernous tissue, and obvious proliferation and fibrosis of interstitial tissues in the smoking rats., Conclusion: Smoking increases the P-selectin expression in the penile vascular epithelial cells and damages the ultrastructure of the penile cavernous tissue, which may be the main contributors to smoking-induced erectile dysfunction.

Objective: To understand the declining pattern of physical activities on daily living (PADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and its influencing factors among the Chinese elderly aged 65 years and over., Methods: Using data from 2002 and 2005 of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Study (CLHLS), 6761 Chinese elderly with fully independent PADL in 2002 and 3556 Chinese elderly with fully independent IADL in 2002 were studied., Results: Data showed that the male elderly with fully dependent IADL at baseline in 2002 declined to 59.3% but kept the IADL in full independent in 2005, while that of female elderly were 51.8% still keeping the IADL full independent in 2005. Male elderly who at baseline with the PADL fully dependent in 2002 declined to 87.1% but kept the PADL full independent in 2005, while that of female elderly were 81.5% keeping the PADL full independent in 2005. There were only 70.0%, 47.0%, 24.0% and 15.0% elderly keeping the IADL full independent among the age groups of 65 - 74, 75 - 84, 85 - 94 and 95 - 105, respectively, from 2002 to 2005; while there were 95.0%, 87.0%, 74.0% and 55.0% elderly keeping the PADL full independent among the above age groups of 65 - 74, 75 - 84, 85 - 94 and 95 - 105, from 2002 to 2005. Age, numbers of episodes that suffering from serious illness in the past two years and cognitive ability were significantly associated with IADL or PADL had a decline after controlling for sex, socioeconomic factors in the multinomial logistical regression analysis among the Chinese elderly aged 65 years and older, during the period from 2002 to 2005., Conclusion: The declining physical functional status among the 65 and older elderly went severe with age in China, with IADL more severe than that of PADL. Chinese female elderly suffered more in PADL or IADL than that of male elderly. Age, numbers of episode that suffering from serious illness in the past two years and cognitive ability were considered as predictive factors of functional status among the Chinese elderly. However, gender, living conditions, education background and marital status that appearing to be the significant predictors only seen in partial IADL/PADL declining models.

Background & Objective: Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are generated from arachidomic acid by cytochrome P450(CYP). Previous studies revealed very strong and selective expression of CYP expoxygenase in human cancer tissues, but almost none in adjacent normal tissues. This study was to investigate the promotive effect of EETs on proliferation of tumor cells and the possible mechanisms., Methods: Four tumor cell lines, Tca-8113, A549, Ncl-H446 and HepG2, were treated with different concentrations of EETs (8,9-EET, 11,12-EET and 14,15-EET) for 12, 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Cell proliferation was measured using the MTT assay. The effect of exogenous EETs on cell cycle of Tca-8113 cells was assessed by flow cytometry. Signal transduction inhibitors of PI3K (LY294002), MAPKK (PD98059), MAPK (apigenin) and PKC (H7) were used to block EETs-induced cell proliferation. Expressions of the total protein and phosphorylated ERK1/2 and Akt were determined by Western blot., Results: EETs promoted proliferation of tumor cells compared with the control and vehicle group in a dose-and time-dependent manner (P<0.01). Incubation of tumor cells with EETs markedly increased the cell number at S/G2-M phase. The percentages of Tca-8113 cells at S and G2-M phases were (49.7+/-7.5%) vs. (17.2+/-9.7%) (P<0.01) and (21.0+/-5.3%) vs. (4.9+/-7.3%), respectively(P<0.01) with and without the treatment of 11,12-EET. EETs incubation significantly enhanced phosphorylation of MARK as well as PI3K/Akt in tumor cells. LY294002, PD98059, apigenine and H7 reduced the stimulative effect of EETs on cell proliferation., Conclusion: EETs possess the promotive effect on proliferation of tumor cells via activation of MAPK and PI3K/Akt signal pathways.

Objective: To report the experience of the surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases (CHD) in pediatric patients with body weight less than 10 kg., Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2007, 105 children with CHD, aged 2 months to 3 years and weighing between 3.5 to 10 kg, underwent surgical treatment. Of the 105 patients, 56 were concomitant with moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension or repeated pulmonary infections, and 35 with complex cardiac abnormalities. Operations were performed through median sternotomy with moderate hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass in 88 cases, with normothermic extracorporeal circulation on beating heart in 14 cases, and with deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in 3 cases., Results: There were 5 early deaths (4.8%). During a follow-up of 2 month to 3 year, 97 survivors with corrective procedure had no late mortality or complications with NYHA class I of cardiac function, excepting 2 cases with little residual shunt. Three survivors with palliative procedure enjoyed higher quality of life., Conclusions: The surgical treatment of CHD in pediatric patients with body weight less than 10 kg seems to be feasible and safe, with satisfactory early and long-term results.

Objective: An HPLC-MS/MS assay was established to determine paeoniflorin in rat plasma and be used to investigate the effect of pharmacokinetics of paeoniflorin when co-administrated Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Radix Paeoniae Rubra., Method: HPLC-MS/MS was performed in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode using target ions at m/z 450 --> m/z 327 for paeoniflorin and m/z 388 --> m/z 225 for jasminoidin. A single dose of Radix Paeoniae Rubra alone and with Radix Angelicae Sinensis was given to rats by ig, the dosage of paeoniflorin was 294.78 mg x kg(-1). Concentrations of paeoniflorin in rat plasma were determined by HPLC-MS/MS assay and main pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated., Result: The mainly pharmacokinetic parameters of paeoniflorin when administrated Radix Paeoniae Rubra only were as follows: C(max) (1.55 +/- 0.53) mg x L(-1), T(max) (0.9 +/- 0.3) h, t 1/2 (1.51 +/- 0.63) h, MRT (3.08 +/- 0.74) h, AUC(0 --> tau) (4.68 +/- 0.85) mg x h(-1) x L(-1). When the two drugs administrated together, the corresponding parameters were (0.93 +/- 0.42) mg x L(-1), (1.5 +/- 0.8) h, (3.08 +/- 1.79) h, (5.19 +/- 1.95) h, (3.36 +/- 0.56) mg x h(-1) x L(-1), respectively. The parameters of C(max), AUC(0 --> tau) and MRT were significantly changed (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Radix Angelicae Sinensis can significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of paeoniflorin, the principal component of Radix Paeoniae Rubra.

Objective: To study the development of changes for Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP) and its mRNA in rats hippocampus after electromagnetic radiation., Methods: Rats were exposed to X-band high power microwave (X-HPM), S-band high power microwave (S-HPM) and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) radiation source respectively. The animal model of electromagnetic radiation was established. Western blot was used to detect the expression of RKIP, and RT-PCR was applied to detect the expression of RKIP mRNA. The interaction of RKIP and Raf-1 was measured with co-immunoprecipitation method, and the expression of cerebral choline acetyltransferase (CHAT) was measured by immunohistochemistry., Results: The expression of RKIP significantly down-regulated at 6 h after radiation, and recovered at 1 d in group EMP, but the down-regulation continued during 1 approximately 7 d after radiation in the two microwave groups. The expression of RKIP mRNA changed wavily during 6 h approximately 7 d after radiation, which showed down-regulation at 6 h, and up-regulation at 3 d. The interaction of RKIP and Raf-1 decreased during 6 h approximately 7 d after radiation, most significantly at 7 d, and the two microwave groups were more significant. The expression of CHAT decreased continuously during 6 h approximately 7 d after radiation, and generally recovered on 14 d., Conclusion: The down-regulation of RKIP and its related proteins of hippocampus is induced by electromagnetic radiation.

Objective: To investigate the association of 5'TCCCCC3' insertion polymorphism in intron7 and the C1096G allele gene with the risk of cerebral stroke in Chinese population., Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from 1414 Chinese patients with cerebral hemorrhage (n = 376), infarction (n = 629) or lacunar infarction (n = 409) selected from 7 clinical centers in China and 1376 controls Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the position 1096 was genotyped with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. PCR and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were used to examine the insertion/deletion polymorphism in 187 cases of cerebral stroke and 190 controls., Results: The frequency of allele G at nucleotide 1096 of the cerebral stroke patients was 13.5%, not significantly different from that of the controls (13.3%, chi(2) = 0.827, P = 0.352). There were not significant differences in the distribution of GG and GC genotypes among the patients with cerebral hemorrhage, infarction, and lacunar infarction respectively and the controls. In the 187 cases and 190 controls, only 2 cases of heterozygote of the insertion sequence were found with a frequency of 0.003., Conclusion: The SNP at the position 1096 of the Endoglin gene and insertion/deletion polymorphism in 5'TCCCCC3' of intron 7 are not the risk factors of cerebral stroke in Chinese population.

Aim: To study the effects of electromagnetic radiation on RKIP and phosphorylated ERK in primary cultured hippocampus neurons. The inhibitor of MEK U0126 was applied to investigate the role of RKIP mediated ERK pathway in radiation injury., Methods: Primary hippocampus neurons were cultured in vitro. X-HPM, S-HPM and EMP were taken as radiation source respectively to establish three cell models exposed to electromagnetic radiation. RKIP and phosphorylated ERK were measured by immunofluorescent labelling and laser scanning confocal microscope. Apoptosis and death fraction of the cells were detected by Annexin V-PI double labelling and flow cytometry., Results: After three kinds of electromagnetic radiation, the expression of RKIP in hippocampus neurons decreased but the expression of phosphorylated ERK increased, and its nuclear translocation occurred. No significant differences were seen between radiation groups. Apoptosis and death fraction of the neurons in U0126 pretreatment groups was significantly lower than that in radiation groups but they were still higher than those in sham-radiation group., Conclusion: The excessive activation of RKIP mediated ERK pathway is one of the important mechanisms for the apoptosis and death of hippocampus neurons induced by electromagnetic radiation. U0126 have some protective effects on radiation injury.

Background & Objective: Radiation pulmonary fibrosis (RPF) is characterized by fibroblast proliferation and excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM). Transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) is a switch factor in the initiation and development of RPF and serves as a therapeutic target. Blocking TGFbeta1 signal transduction pathway might alleviate RPF. This study was to investigate the effects of two Smad pathway inhibitors, SB203580 and WP631, on Smad signal transduction pathway in human lung fibroblasts (HLFs) after irradiation., Methods: HLFs were pretreated with 25 micromol/L SB203580 or 5 nmol/L WP631, then irradiated with 3 Gy 60Co gamma rays and stimulated by 10 microg/L TGFbeta1. The transcriptional activity of SP1 and AP1 were measured using electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Expressions of Smad3, Smad4, Smad7, p-Smad3 and P21(WAF1/CIP1) were detected by Western blot. The expression of type Iplasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-I) was detected by immunohistochemical staining The cell cycle was measured by FACS., Results: After irradiation. with 3 Gy gamma rays and stimulation by TGFbeta1, HLFs pre-incubated with SB203580 or WP631 were increased in G2-M phase and decreased in S phase as compared with cells without pretreatment. p21(WAF1/CIP1) and p-Smad3 were decreased in HLFs pretreated with SB203580, while PAI-1 was decreased in HLFs pretreated with WP631. Furthermore, the transcriptional activity of SP1 and AP1 was inhibited by WP631., Conclusions: SB203580 and WP631 can abrogate excessive proliferation, expressions of p21(WAF1/CIP1) and PAI-1 induced by gamma rays and TGFbeta1 in HLFs through blocking Smad signal transduction pathway.

The emission spectra of SrAl12O19 : Pr3+ at temperature from 308 to 483 K were investigated under vacuum ultraviolet excitation. Both the dipole-forbidden 4f2 --> 4f2 transition and the dipole-allowed 4f5d --> 4f2 transitions were observed. The intensity of the 4f5d --> 4f2 emission relative to that of the 4f2 --> 4f2 emission increased with increasing temperature. A thermal equilibrium model was applied to the system consisting of the 1S0 state and the lowest 4f5d states of Pr3+, and the temperature dependence of emission spectra of Pr3+ in the Pr(3+)-doped SrAl12O19 was well explained.

Objective: To investigate the characteristics of seroconversion of HBV NAT screening-positive crowd from blood donors in Dongguan city and provide reference for the safety of blood transfusion and disease prevention., Methods: With retrospective survey, Nucleic acid testing (NAT) was used to analyze 28800 HBsAg-negative samples by ELISA from blood donors in Dongguan city from August, 2006 to August, 2007 with Roche Cobas AmpliScreen systems; and follow-up research including NAT for HBV-DNA, ELISA for HBsAg and multiple factors analysis for HBV infection was carried out on HBV NAT screening-positive crowd., Results: 10 positive pooling were screened from 28800 samples; after further detection, 2 of these positive pooling were HBV-DNA negative and 8 HBV-DNA positive samples were found.The 10-week follow-up research on these 8 blood donors showed that 6 were HBV-DNA positive and HBsAg-negative at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 weeks respectively, 1 was not HBsAg positive until 2 weeks and was positive on follow-up, and considered in "window period", 1 was HBV-DNA negative, HBsAg-negative on follow-up. Of these 8,7 were not only migrant laborers with poor condition of work, life and health but also in high risk of secondary infection for HBV, in addition they had little idea of therapy or prevention measures of HBV infection and the other 1 was HBV-DNA negative, HBsAg-negative on follow-up, who was in better condition than the above 7 donors., Conclusion: NAT is more sensitive than ELISA in screening HBV, but the probability of being false positive of NAT can not be ignored at the same time. On the hand, only screening HBsAg for HBV is relative limitation in high infection region of China. Some factors would have effect on the serum conversion of blood donors including the quality of work and life, therapy or prevention measures.

Objective: To investigate the position change of upper molars and incisors in order to evaluate the stability of posterior anchorage with the application of micro-screw implant., Methods: Eight adult patients with severe maxillary protrusion were included. Upper first premolars were extracted and upper posterior anchorage was reinforced with micro-screw implant in all patients. Cephalometric and cast analyses were carried out to record the position change of molar and micro-screw., Results: During treatment the micro-screw implants kept stable in sagittal and vertical plane. Neither the mesial-distal movement nor the tipping of the upper molars during the treatment was statistically significant (P > 0.05). The edge of upper incisors was retracted by 6.86 mm and the tipping was reduced by 18.03 degrees . The center of resistance was intruded by 3.28 mm on average. Significant change was observed (P < 0.01)., Conclusions: Micro-screw implant could provide good anchorage control in the orthodontic treatment.

According to published nucleotide sequences, ORF4 gene of barley yellow dwarf virus GAV (BYDV-GAV) was synthesized by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The BYDV-GAV ORF4 gene was expressed in baculovirus -insect cell expression system efficiently, and western bolt analysis confirmed its expression product. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that GFP: ORF4 fusion protein was associated with the nuclear envelope of insect cells. By expressing the N- and C-terminal regions of ORF4-encoding product (P4) in insect cells combined with structure prediction, it was found that the N-terminal region of P4 containing four a-helices is required for targeting P4 to the nuclear envelope. These results provide a base for biological function of ORF4 gene during systemic infection of BYDV-GAV in host plants further.

Objective: To study the chemical constituents in fresh fleshyscaleaf of Lilium lancifolium., Method: The constituents were separated. by various kinds of chromatography and their structures were identified on the basis of spectral analysis., Result: Ten compounds were identified regaloside A (1), regaloside C (2), methyl-a-D-mannopyranosid (3), methyl-ca-D-glucopyranoside (4), (25R, 26R) -26-methoxyspirost-5-ene-3p-yl-O-ca-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), (25R)-spirost-5-ene-3beta-yl-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (6), (25R, 26R)-17alpha-hydroxy-26-methoxyspirost-5-ene-3beta-yl-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyra nosyl-(1-->6)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (7), daucosterol (8), adenoside (9), berberine (10)., Conclusion: All compounds except 1 and 3 were isolated from this species for the first time, and berberine was first reported in genus Lilium.

Aim: To observe the effect of neutron radiation on intestinal epithelial cells 6 (IEC-6), to study the effect of IL-2 on the proliferation and recovery of neutron-injured IEC-6, and to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of IL-2 on the injured IEC-6., Methods: 4Gy-neutron-injured IEC-6 were treated by IL-2, with or without the blocking agent JAK(1) (A77-1726). The change of proliferative activity and death manner of the treated IEC-6 were detected by MTT colorimetry and flow cytometry at 10, 15, 30 minutes and 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours respectively. The expression of IL-2Rbeta and the activation of JAK(1) of neutron-injured IEC-6 treated by IL-2 were detected by immunocytochemical stainning and Western blot., Results: After IEC-6 were radiated by 4 Gy neutron for 24 hours, the proliferative activity of IEC-6 decreased markedly but increased strikingly after IL-2 treatment (P<0.05). The apoptosis of IEC-6 in IL-2-treated group decreased (P<0.05), but there was no obvious difference in necrotic cell number. After neutron-injured IEC-6 were treated by IL-2, JAK(1) was activated at 10 and 15 minutes, and the expression of IL-2Rbeta increased apparently at 24 hours. When treated by JAK(1) and IL-2, the proliferative activity of neutron-injured IEC-6 was much lower than that in IL-2-treated group., Conclusion: IL-2 can accelerate the proliferation of neutron-radiated IEC-6 and protect them from neutron injury. IL-2Rbeta and JAK(1) participate in the regulation of neutron-injured IEC-6 by IL-2.

Objective: To study the chemical constituents of Pseudostellaria heterophylla., Method: The compounds were isolated by silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and purified by recrystallization. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of physicochemical properties and spectral analysis., Result: Seven compounds were identified as 2-minalin (1) , 3-furfuryl pyrrole-2-carboxylate (2), ursolic acid (3), acacetin (4), luteolin (5), acacetin 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (6-->1)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside (6)., Conclusion: Among them, compounds 3-6 were isolated from the plant for the first time.

Objective: To study the relationship between the expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and the expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) as well as its effect on the development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC)., Method: Western blot was used to detect ERK1/2 protein expression, meanwhile, the change of ERK1/2 activity was examined to measure its efficiency of phosphate transferase in 40 LSCC. Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect uPA protein expression. The correlation of each factor with relevant clinical factor was statistically analyzed., Result: Expression of ERK1/2 showed a positive linear correlation (P < 0.05). Neither ERK1 nor ERK2 expression was significantly related to T-grades, histological classes and cervical lymph node status. Neither T-grades, nor histological classes was significantly related to ERK1/2 activity or uPA protein expression. There was significant correlation between ERK1/2 activity and cervical lymph node status and between uPA protein expression and cervical lymph node status (P < 0.05). ERK1/2 protein expression was correlated with neither ERK1/2 activity nor uPA protein expression, but there was a significant positive linear association between ERK1/2 activity and uPA protein expression (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Abnormal activation of ERK may play an important role in cervical lymph node metastasis of LSCC by up-regulation of uPA expression.

Objective: To explore the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the mutations in the fragment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from nucleotides 3153 to 3551, which have shown high frequency of point mutation., Methods: One hundred and ninety-one normal controls and 222 patients with T2DM were screened by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), T-A cloning sequencing and denatured high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) techniques., Results: The prevalence of mtDNA mutations in the patient group (24.32%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (7.33%) (P < 0.05). Three novel mutations of A3209T, T3253G and A3467C were found, and C3497T was first reported in DM. Onset age, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and diabetic nephropathy could be related to occurrence of mtDNA mutations (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Mitochondrial DNA mutations might implicate T2DM in Wenzhou population, which should play an important role in the pathogenesis of T2DM.

Objective: To explore the phytoestrogenic effects of ten kinds of Chinese medicine including flos carthami, radix cyathulae, radix salviae miltiorrhizae, fructus ligustri lucidi, fructus lycii, radix clycyrrhizae, herba cistanches, herba epimedii, fructus psoraleae and semen cuscutae., Method: 240 female Kunming mice weighting 9 - 12 g were randomly divided into two main groups A and B. A group was divided into 12 small groups: 1 solvent control group, 1 diethylstilbestrol control group and 10 Chinese medicine groups. B group was also divided into 12 small groups: 1 solvent control group, 1 diethylstilbestrol control group and 10 Chinese medicine antagonistic groups. Mice in ten antagonistic groups were administered both Chinese medicine and diethylstilbestrol everyday. After administered(op) for 4 days, blood was collected and serum was separated. The effect of the pharmacological serum on proliferation rate of MCF-7 (ER+) was analyzed by MTT-assay., Result: In A group, proliferation rates of MCF-7 cells treated with serum from eight Chinese medicine groups including flos carthami, radix cyathulae, radix salviae miltiorrhizae, fructus lycii, herba cistanches, herba epimedii, fructus psoraleae and semen cuscutae were coued markedly increase respectively. While serum from fructus ligustri lucidi group could markedly decrease the proliferation rate of MCF-7 cells. In B group, the increased proliferation rate of MCF-7 cells caused by diethylstilbestrol was significantly reduced in seven Chinese medicine antagonistic groups including flos carthami, radix cyathulae, radix salviae miltiorrhizae, radix clycyrrhizae, herba epimedii, fructus psoraleae and semen cuscutae. While the increased proliferation rate could be markedly enhanced in herba cistanches group., Conclusion: Six kinds of Chinese medicine such as flos carthami, radix cyathulae, radix salviae miltiorrhizae, herba epimedii, fructus psoraleae and semen cuscutae show both estrogenic effects (when administered indepently) and antiestrogenic effects (when administered together with diethylstilbestrol). Such bidirectional effects depends on the internal estrogen level.
