This paper looks at the reception of Wuthering Heights (1847) in Taiwan, including its translations, adaptations and other derivative works. There were three translations of Wuthering Heights in China before 1945: Xialu yuanjia by Woo Kwang Kien (1930), Paoxiao shanzhuang by Liang Shih-chiu (1942), and Hungui lihentian by Luo Se (1945). The latter two versions were reprinted many times in post-war Taiwan. Liang's version was so well-known that many publishers changed the title of Luo's version to Paoxiao Shanzhuang; however, there were more publishers reprinting Luo's version, sometimes under fake names, sometimes without the translator's name at all. From 1945 to 1993, all translations of W.H. in Taiwan were either Liang's or Luo's. There were no new translations until 1993, when Fang Ping's Huxiao shanzhuang, another mainland translation, was printed in Taiwan. After that, translations by Sun Zhili, Yang Yi and Song Zhaolin were also imported from mainland China. However, the titles of these four "new" translations were again all changed to Paoxiao shanzhuang, Liang's title. From 1945 up to the present, most Taiwanese readers have read W.H. through one of the six translations by mainland translators. Aside from full translations, there are simplified bilingual versions, versions adapted for young readers, comics, and other derivative works. Although the bilingual versions are for English learners, the translations are often of low quality. As for the children's versions, editors often added some "educational" elements and provided the tale with a moral. Two scripts based on the novel and translations of derivative works in other languages, including The Story of Heathcliff 's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights by Lin Haire-Sargeant and Honkaku Shosetsu (A Real Novel) by Minae Mizumura, are also discussed in the paper. The changeable situation from the late 19th century to the 20th century makes the world's politics, societies and ideologies into a great change. In this epoch, a lot of new problem, new phenomenon and modern ideology appeared. The publication of periodicals, establishment of publishing houses and new writers coming out that promoted modern literature and translated literature growth. Firstly, modern fiction imitated Western model emerged in the South of Vietnamese society, written by romanization language. Secondly, Chinese classical fictions translated into romanization, then published on periodicals; at the same period, with the popularization of romanization words, French classical fictions translated too. Beside that, Chinese people in Sai Gon Cho Ló'n read many of from Hong Kong, Taiwan popular fictions, especially Qiong Yao and Louis Cha's works. These Chinese people whom translated their works into Vietnamese language, which in the first time as a new phenomenon of receiving popular Taiwan fiction in South of Vietnam. This study analyzes the ways in which translations of texts are manipulated by influential patrons. Using the framework of Lefevere's theoretical concept of patronage as a control factor in translated literature and the idea of translation as rewriting, this paper explores the influence of patronage on the history and development of the translation of Taiwan's literature into English. More specifically, it seeks to show how certain professionals and patrons have manipulated the practice of translating Taiwan's literature. The paper traces the historical development of the practice of translating Taiwan's literary works from the 1950's onward, to illuminate how the English renditions of this literature are used by certain authoritative figures who, acting in effect as patrons, have introduced Taiwan to the world. More generally, based on Lefevere's theory, it looks at the role of patronage and its influence on the development of this particular translation practice. The findings of the study confirm that the patron indeed plays an important role in translation activities. They also enrich Lefevere's theory of patronage in the system of translated literature inasmuch as some patrons as well as professionals also serve to rewrite the original Taiwan's literature through their English renditions, which are consequently used to introduce and promote Taiwan to the world, for example by featuring its unique social culture, geographical surroundings, historical background and political transformations. From the 1950s to the 1960s, a survey team organized by the Institute of Ethnology of Academia Sinica visited nine ethnic groups of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples, as well as the living areas of several Taiwanese Plains Indigenous peoples. During the field investigation process, their cameras recorded various activities and objects in the field. The survey work spanned about 10 years, and by 1965, a large number of field record images had been accumulated. The contents of this batch of field photos include: photo images of the villages visited (far, medium, and close), the natural environment around the tribe, local plants, people, rituals, material culture, buildings, statues, weaving looms and utensils, etc. If the contents of the images are viewed in accordance with the sequence in which the photos were taken, it is possible to grasp the movement traces and routes of the investigators at that time to a considerable extent. Although the black and white photos are old, they can still show the people, things and details that are brought into focus by the lens. These field photos have also been widely used in research papers and ethnographic publications, and have survived to this day. These photographs of field investigations spanning 10 years enrich and illustrate three-dimensionally the research results written in each text, assist the presentation of early studies of Indigenous peoples in Taiwan, and support research hypotheses and concepts. These field photos not only “recorded” the social and cultural outlook of Taiwan’s Indigenous people at that time, but also left field footprints and genealogical knowledge for early research on the Austronesian peoples in Taiwan.This article adopts the analysis framework of the photographic ecosystem to sort out the field photography archives of the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, from 1950 to 1960, and annotates three important nodes of the photos’ biography: (1) From the 1950s to the 1960s, photographic images were included in the monographs published by the Institute of Ethnology as research results, highlighting the social biographies of this batch of photo files. Here, photography has witnessed fieldwork on the ground, describing the interactions within fieldwork and the production process of scientific knowledge. The developed photos and images assist in the presentation of encyclopedic knowledge of subjects. (2) Archiving of physical photos taken in the 1950s and 1960s and subsequent digital files points out the material biographies of the photo files. The conversion from analog to digital material/interface makes the images more “freely” released from the photographs. These photo files that survive in the binary material world of 0 and 1 have more diversified possibilities for application and knowledge extension paths. (3) This batch of photographic images from 60 years ago, through the multiple possibilities of materials/interfaces, has moved into the field and ecosystem of academic publication in response to changing academic thinking, social actions or events. As photo archives move from one ecosystem to another, their use, value, and meaning, including the value of their biographies, have also changed. The scope or boundary of the aforementioned important identifiable nodes is distinguished, described and explained through specific examples and activities. I also discuss the fieldwork conception, knowledge production methods, researcher--subject relationships, and the evolution of the power interactions of the Taiwan Indigenous peoples research at the Institute of Ethnology of Academia Sinica based on this, as well as the important figures in its development and institutionalization. The textbook review system in Taiwan can be divided into three parts: primary, secondary, and vocational school. Primary and secondary school textbooks are reviewed by review and approval committees, while vocational school textbook review is carried out without a committee. Although the above committees are responsible for reviewing textbooks, each has its own regulations. Whether decision made by the committees have any administrative binding force is one of the concerns of this paper. Second, what principles should organizing review and approval committees have to carry out the administration obligations of the administrative organization. What roles should the administrative organization play in review and approval committees? This paper analyzes laws and regulations relevant to textbook review. It also compares the organizational operation of committees in education and other fields. After years of development, Women's visual arts have increased in aspects of its genre or quantity. Women's spirituality related creative works have also provided audiences with more varieties of thinking and dialogic modes. Especially, since 1990s, major joint art exhibitions in Taiwan have pioneered and expanded the exploration, the content of Women's visual arts and their aestheticism. An observation on the exhibitions in three major official museums in Taiwan (Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Kaohsiung Fine Arts Museum) reveals the fact that the attempts and efforts of Women's visual arts to expand new models and formats have formed important directions, and have thus constructed an indispensable part of art development in Taiwan. Facing the rapid changes and developments of art scenes in the 21st century, how do Taiwanese Women artists confront the world trend and their situation in life while proposing their own point of view through the artworks? The present paper attempts to sort out the characteristics of Taiwanese Women's visual arts from the angle of Women spirituality. Through a replenishing point of view, the multiplicity to the Women's Arts should be revealed. Through the re-exploration of different Women's arts orient and occident, and reconsider the oppressions and persecutions of female body and mind enforced by the structure of traditional paternal monotheism and industrial science, this paper will provide a spiritual enlightenment to Taiwanese Women's spirituality & eco-political arts. The paper adopted qualitative study, with the aim to explore the lived experience of a family with a child diagnosed with cancer. Although there are literatures available in Taiwan regarding the lived experience of children with cancer, this paper stretched beyond such boundary and included the lived experience of the family members and siblings as well.. The data were collected using phenomenological approach and through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The samples were family members of 10 cancer children and some of the children themselves. The results identified three main themes: (1) families' emotional experience when encountering the disease, (2) changes to the family during the child's hospitalization, and (3) the endeavor to live and for future life. The resulted indicated that cancer provoked life changes within the whole family, predominantly family separation and change of occupation etc.; supports from the medical team exerted a strong positive influence on these families, aiding the children diagnosed with cancer and their family members in striving to live and building a quality future while coexisting with the disease. Due to Taiwan's political and economic situation after World War II, technological and vocational education has always corresponded to national economic planning and manpower development. It was not until the education reform in 1994 that the people's educational needs began to be gradually taken into account by official policies. The civil sector's call for the reform was for "the expansion of senior high schools and universities," while the government's response was to "increase the Second National Freeway capacity." However, after the regime changed in 2000, the new government did not alter the original direction. This study employed documentary analysis to examine official historical documents and academic commentaries to understand the role played by educational reform. This study points out that the social power gathered by the education reform movement led the public to seriously contemplate "whether education should serve the development of the nation." Educational issues are embedded in the social context. This article recommends that we no longer strictly adhere to uniform equality, moderately open market competition, and establish high market value professional certificates/licenses to create a new path for technological and vocational education. Higher education in Taiwan has undergone major changes since 1994. Both the appeals of civil society groups and the content of official reports and subsequent policies are full of neoliberalism discourses. This article conducted document analysis and philosophizing methods, and adopted critical pedagogy as a theoretical framework to achieve the following four research purposes. The first is to analyze the neoliberal discourse within globalization, focusing on academic capitalism and new public management, which have significantly impacted higher education; the second is to review and reflect on Taiwan's 30 years of development of higher education reform through official reports and higher education-related policies; the third is to explore the impact of neoliberalism on higher education, especially the important aspects of governance, curriculum, teaching, learning and teachers in universities; and the fourth is to rethink how future higher education institutions, along with their teachers and students, can break through neoliberalism's influences. Ultimately, this article proposed that universities must re-establish themselves as democratic public spheres in the face of the destruction of democratic values by neoliberal discourse, with university teachers and students as transformative public intellectuals to jointly defend the publicity and social responsibility of higher education. Achieving enhanced healthcare quality by participating in cross-disciplinary medical teams and providing specialized, precision nursing are core professional values of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). Although CNSs are crucial in the healthcare field, the development of CNSs in Taiwan remains in its infancy. The Taiwan Nurses Association has already announced regulations related to professional frameworks and scope of practice for advanced practice nurses and has reached a preliminary consensus and plans on the definition, qualifications, and indicators of care for CNSs. The clinical application, job titles, and certification of the professional core values of CNSs require continuous and joint deliberation and development by professional nurse organizations. In this study, the results of empirical research into professional organizational frameworks and certification of CNSs in Europe, the United States, and Australia were used to derive a reference model for CNS education and training development for advanced practice nurse specialties in Taiwan. Background: The application of palliative care is limited and challenging in intensive care units (ICUs) because of complex factors such as time constraints and unpredictable disease progression. Although research results and international consensus stress the early use of palliative care, utilization remains low, resulting in increased risks of ineffective medical care and poor quality of death. Improving this situation requires a comprehensive understanding of the palliative condition in ICUs. Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the utilization of hospice resources in adult ICUs and to compare this utilization between users and non-users. Methods: This retrospective correlation study recruited cases from the adult ICU database of a medical center in northern Taiwan between June and July 2022. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test and chi-square were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 1,181 records were analyzed, including 458 (38.8%) females and 723 (61.2%) males. Two hundred and seventeen cases (18.4%) used hospice resources. Although 124 (10.4%) of the 1181 cases were identified as "in urgent need of hospice resources" (i.e., died within 30 days of ICU admission), 25 (20.2%) did not use these resources. Significant differences between the urgent-need cases who did and did not use hospice resources were found in terms of age, disease type, degree of frailty, cardiac arrest, infection, state of consciousness, intubation and tracheostomy status, inotropic and vasopressor medication, renal replacement, ECMO placement, delirium, and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Scores. Conclusions/ Implications for Practice: The roughly 20% of ICU patients in urgent needs of palliative care who did not utilize palliative care resources highlight the needs for continued discussion to better assist patients on palliative care decision-making. The findings show multifaceted differences between those who did and did not access palliative care. Future studies should design and test strategies to facilitate the identification of palliative care needs and ensure the effective allocation of palliative care resources in ICUs. Background: Staff caregivers of day care centers provide many activities for older people. However, there is a lack of a systematic curriculum based on Taiwanese culture to improve cognitive function, self-care ability, and depressive mood status in these individuals. Purpose: This study was designed to test the effectiveness of a series of localized cognitive stimulation training courses implemented by direct caregivers and aimed at improving cognitive function, self-care ability, and depressive mood in older people at day care centers. Methods: This cluster-randomized controlled trial research was conducted over a four-month period. The participants were randomly assigned to the experimental, comparison, or control groups based on their day care center affiliation. The experimental group received a series of localized cognitive stimulation training sessions with musical rhythm courses from day care center direct caregivers. The cognitive function, self-care ability, and depression mood state of the three groups were then tested. Results: The experimental group reported statistically significant changes in average scores for attention, feeding, and depressive mood. After controlling for time and degree of participation in activities, the comparison group reported a lower average score for cognitive function at timepoint 3. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: The results of this study support caregivers at day care centers implementing a series of localized cognitive stimulation training course interventions to prevent declines in activities of daily living and cognitive function and ameliorate depressive mood in older adults. Based on the result of Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2018, this study tries to obtain deep insight of teacher professional development in elementary schools by comparing data between Taiwan and international average. Elementary-school teachers in Taiwan spend less time on teaching, lesson planning, and teaching preparation than TALIS international average. However, they spend more time on general administrative work (including communication, paperwork and other clerical duties), marking/correcting of student work, and counselling students (including student supervision, mentoring, virtual counselling, career guidance and behaviour guidance). Adapted to qualitative research, it reveals that teachers' profession development is by students' family and administrative duties. As to teacher professional development activities, carrying out teaching plans, applying reflective teaching, joining professional learning communities and online professional learning communities, cooperating with other teachers play key roles in supporting and encouraging teacher professional development. Classroom assessment is vital to the effectiveness of the competency-based curriculum in Taiwan's 12-Year Basic Education. The present study investigated how policies, schools, and teacher communities influence the practice of classroom assessment by teachers. The study addresses the following three research questions: (1) How do assessment policies affect teachers' classroom assessment practices? (2) How do school culture and teacher communities influence teachers' implementation of classroom assessment? (3) What challenges and opportunities do teachers face in the practice of classroom assessment? This study employed qualitative, in-depth interviews with seven junior and senior high school teachers selected for their expertise in classroom assessment and with one scholar specializing in classroom assessment. The study revealed that entrance exams, education policies, school culture, and teacher communities significantly influence teachers' practice of classroom assessment. Teachers' primary challenges in implementing classroom assessment include a lack of motivation to conduct them appropriately and a lack of guidance on how to administer assessment properly. On the basis of these findings, this study proposes that guidelines be developed for assisting instructional assessment; fostering a positive classroom environment that nurtures a love of learning; establishing collaborative mechanisms for assessment; and aligning policies to connect curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Background: Team-Based Learning (TBL) is a potentially effective method of instruction that has been applied only infrequently in nursing education in Taiwan. Purpose: This study was developed to examine the effects of incorporating the TBL strategy into the course "Advanced Medical Nursing English". Methods: A quasi-experimental, single group, and pre-post test design was adopted. Nursing students who took the "Advanced Medical Nursing English" elective course used the TBL strategy for 8-weeks. Students were assigned to heterogenic groups of 12 students each based on their scores on an English pre-test. The collected data included the scores on individual and group readiness tests, a self-directed learning questionnaire, learning satisfaction, and an English posttest. Self-completed reflection papers and focused group interviews were used for qualitative appraisal. Results: A total of 72 students were enrolled. Nearly all (93.1%) were female and 21-22 years of age. The results of a paired samples t-test applied to examine the effects of the TBL strategy on learning outcomes showed that English posttest and self-directed learning ability scores had both improved significantly (all p < .05). The results of ANOVA tests showed that students with lower pre-test scores improved more than those with higher pre-test scores. The results of a sample t-test with a test value of 4.0 applied to examine learning satisfaction found a non-significant change (p > .05), indicating no change in perceived satisfaction. The qualitative analysis identified four themes regarding perceptions of the TBL strategy, including "friendships in learning", "harmonious atmosphere and participations", "inertial shock and adjustments", and " excessive learning load". Conclusion: TBL was shown to be an effective learning strategy for RN-BSN students in a Medical Nursing English Course, particularly those with relatively low pre-test scores. Future studies should focus attention on reading assignments to avoid overburdening students. The results of this study may serve as a reference for medical nursing English education. This paper aims to investigate the 'paucal' construction [無口舍物 X] 'very few， barely5 in Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM). The elements that can occur in this construction include nouns, adjectives, modal verbs, psychological verbs, active verbs, and 'H列 + active verb.' According to the 'scalar model,' all of these elements should possess the feature [+scalar] to specify the idea 'scalar.5 Adjectives, in particular, should make [+positive] prominent as well. 口舍物 'what' can be treated as a 'semi-adverb' when it modifies the following verbal elements. Introduction: The analysis of contents in abstracts has proven helpful to researchers for effectively screening the information they need. On the one hand, this approach can save time, while on the other hand, it can also allow researchers to discover the core values and research trends in the investigated field of study. Thus, this study took all the text contents in abstracts from the Physical Education Journal, Sports & Exercise Research, Quarterly of Chinese Physical Education, Bulletin of Sport and Exercise Psychology of Taiwan, and Chinese Journal of Sports Biomechanics for the period from March 2009 to March 2019 as the target of its investigation, in an attempt to further explain the development statuses and trends of the target journals through a rigorous and objective analysis process. Methods: Utilizing the concepts of text mining and natural language processing, this paper adopted an analysis program suitable for digital volumes of text data. The adopted program included five steps: text extraction, text segmentation, TF-IDF weight analysis, co-word analysis, and network analysis. Results: Most of the research subjects included in the studies published in the target journals were students and athletes in Taiwan, with the research scope covering the fields of social science and natural science. Conclusion: A network map in this research should fall into the category of relevant academic fields in Taiwan becoming rich and diversified. However, the research topics under the category of "sports history and philosophy" appear to be slightly weak. We suggest that relevant scholars should combine research themes using diverse ways of thinking to achieve the goal of multi-level and multi-dimensional development of sports-related academics. The focus of this article is on a male patient with hearing loss who was diagnosed with COVID-19 after returning to Taiwan from overseas. Due to the severe pneumonia infiltration, the patient received the clinical-trial treatment Remdesivir. In addition to facing the isolation and new-drug-related anxieties of the patient, the medical team faced difficulties in communicating effectively with the patient and in helping him through the isolation period. During the period of hospitalization (March 14th to April 13th, 2020), the author used Roy's adaptation model to perform a nursing assessment, which confirmed that the patient faced the following problems: (1) ineffective breathing pattern related to COVID-19, (2) impaired verbal communication related to hearing impairment, and (3) social isolation related to the isolation experience and the communication barrier with healthcare workers. During the nursing care process, the author helped the patient receive the antiviral treatment and taught him how to do diaphragmatic breathing in a comfortable, recumbent position to improve his breathing pattern. To reduce the difficulty of communication, the author made a pile of cards with common care-related words, provided pen and paper to write, and used a mobile-phone-based socialnetworking application to communicate with the patient. The author used writing to communicate with the patient and learned some simple signs from him to enable interaction. Moreover, the intervention helped him adapt to the isolation and treatment protocols to reach holistic nursing care. Based on this experience, the author suggests that hospitals cooperate with sign language organizations to teach healthcare workers simple communication skills, including sign language and cards to provide more complete care for patients with hearing loss during hospitalization. Culture is the soul of a nation and literature can shed light on the understanding of a nation's culture. This paper focuses on the translation of Taiwanese literary and historical literary works in Vietnam, and how it has shifted the Vietnamese readers' perception of Taiwanese literature. Previously, Taiwanese culture and literature were only vaguely perceived, and often viewed as regional literature by Vietnamese readers. However, Taiwanese literature has been increasingly translated in Vietnam in the recent years. This gradually shifts the Vietnamese readers' perception of Taiwanese culture, bolstering their understanding of Taiwan's native literature. With the increasing presence of translated literary works in Vietnam, the culturally distinct native spirit embodied in Taiwanese literature has attracted the attention of Vietnamese readers. As such, Taiwanese literature is being recognized as an independent literary entity in Vietnam. The development of information technology has changed the world and allowed the innovation of nursing-care services. In recent years, the development of nursing informatics in Taiwan has been catching up with international trends and has been regarded positively by the international medical informatics community. The integration of information technology into medical care system has created the new nursing role of "informatics nurse." Although the certiication system and job descriptions for these nurses have become increasingly comprehensive in many nations, Taiwan remains in the early development stage in these regards. Taiwan informatics nurses continue to face unclear and inadequately stated role responsibilities and job titles, undeined training requirements, and a lack of a clear qualiication / certiication system. Background: Taking antibiotics in strict adherence to physician prescriptions is crucial for maintaining the stability of the drug concentration in the blood and for achieving the best therapeutic effects. The increasing antimicrobial resistance in recent decades has led the Ministry of Health and Welfare to promote the rational use of antibiotics and the use of a computer monitoring system to control the use of antibiotics in hospitals. Although non-adherence is considered as the major factor contributing to antimicrobial resistance, patient non-adherence to antibiotic prescriptions is an issue that has been largely overlooked. This paper explores this issue due to the serious threat from antimicrobial resistance and the few studies that have investigated patient adherence to antibiotic treatments for acute infections in Taiwan. Purpose: The aims of the study include: (1) describe patient's adherence to antibiotic therapy for acute infections and (2) explore the potential factors of influence on antibiotic adherence such as demographics, disease characteristics, and knowledge of antibiotic treatment. Methods: The study used a descriptive correlational design. A convenience sample of 162 patients with acute infections was recruited from outpatient infectious disease clinics in Taoyuan City. Data were collected using the study questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and logistic regression. Results: The study results showed that only 40.1% of patients followed their prescription to take antibiotics completely. The remainder earned lower scores than their prescription-adhering counterparts for knowledge regarding the effects of antibiotics (U = 2654.5, p = .046). Results of logistic regression showed that knowledge regarding the effects of antibiotics was the most significant predictor (B = .481, p = .046) of adherence to antibiotic therapies. Conclusion: Non-adherence to prescriptions is prevalent in short-term antibiotic treatments prescribed for acute infections. This finding reminds healthcare providers to provide proper education to the recipients of antibiotic treatments, even those treated for a very short duration for acute infections in outpatient settings. Background: Obesity is a worldwide epidemic that threats the health and body image of those who suffer from this condition. While bariatric surgery has been shown to effectively assist patients to achieve weight loss goals and to improve body image, related research on this intervention is lacking in Taiwan. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of bariatric surgery on body image in obese patients. Method: This study used a longitudinal design. Data was collected from 2 hospitals located in northern and southern Taiwan. A total of 56 obese patients who had undergone bariatric surgery enrolled as participants, and the completion rate was 93.3%. Participants responded to a validated body image questionnaire immediately prior to and 3 months after bariatric surgery, with data used to assess the effects of the surgery. SPSS 20.0 software for windows was used for data analysis. Result: Participant scores for body image were low on the questionnaire administered prior to surgery, with a significant negative correlation identified between body mass index (BMI) and the value of appearance (r = -.36, p < .01). After bariatric surgery, the average EWL was 42.08%, which effectively achieved expected weight loss goals. Variables including overall body image, appearance evaluation, orientation, and body satisfaction of participants were significantly improved. Only the variable of muscle tension did not improve significantly. Postoperative body image did not correlate with either BMI or EWL. Conclusion: Three months after the bariatric surgery, the body image, appearance evaluation, and physical appearance satisfaction of participants had significantly improved. However, there was no improvement in muscle tension scores. In order to improve the post-surgery body image of patients, we recommend that healthcare workers provide patients with proper expectations of bariatric surgery and teach patients appropriate muscle-tension exercises. The Gender Equality in Employment Act was enacted to protect gender equality in the workplace. Increasingly tight controls over operating costs by employers and the increasingly heavy workloads of nurses pose major challenges to the labor rights of female nurses. This article introduces the labor rights of female nurses as stated in relevant laws and regulations such as the Gender Equality in Employment Act, the Labor Standards Act, the Labor Insurance Act, Regulations on Leave-Taking for Workers, Regulations on Implementing Unpaid Parental Leave for Raising Children Pension Act, and the Employment Insurance Act. In addition, this paper introduces three judicial decisions that highlight domestic judicial practice with regard to labor rights in nursing. It is hoped that nurses may gain a better understanding of their rights and challenges from these judicial decisions. Finally, this article makes recommendations to help nurses overcome the difficulties in implementing labor rights. It is hoped that this article helps increase the general awareness among nurses of their labor rights and encourages nurses to pursue and secure their rightful labor rights from their employer. In this study, I make use of reports from the Taiwan Daily News, supplemented by my field investigation, to construct the circumstances of the Xiahai City God's temple festival during the Japanese colonial era. I approach the issue from two perspectives, the festivity organization and the review system. In the first section, I compare and analyze documents to disentangle the complicated relations between Xiahai City God Temple, the Hainei coalition, and Xiamen Chamber of Commerce Jin Tong Shun. It was the Chen family of Hainei coalition that brought the Xiahai City God to Taiwan. However, the temple construction and funds for festivities were either promoted or handled by Jin Tong Shun which wielded local power. The profits from selling paper cangues during the temple festivals were so huge that many representatives of the festival organization embezzled this money to line their own pockets. Jin Tong Shun had failed to suggest effective management solutions. As a result, severe clashes occurred between the Hainei coalition and Jin Tong Shun in 1918. Although a festival committee was organized afterwards, Jin Tong Shun still controlled the actual management. The only change was members of "Xiamen Chamber of Commerce Jin Tong Shun" had expanded from the original retail sellers to include local gentry merchants of Dadaocheng. Yet, both sides have still held a grudge against each other up to today. The second section describes the Xiahai City God's temple festival through the review system. The Japanese colonial era was a time when advertisements prevailed. Advertisements were considered an indicator of modernization. Under such circumstances, traditional festival palanquins were required to carry advertisements as well. In 1920, the Qianyuan Company took the initiative and invite officials, gentlemen, and news reporters to rate and give awards to the yige festival palanquins and musical troupes. Festival palanquins that featured a combination of traditional stories with modern advertisements won the higher scores. Whereas, judges for musical troupes showed a preference for banners and artifacts that best embodied the troupe's sophistication. The competition represented a taste of the gentry class that gave priority to tradition, with an integration of modern innovation. This observation serves to reverse the existent prejudice that temple festivals tended to be vulgar in taste. The City God Temple festival of Japanese colonial era, led by the gentry stratum of the society, demonstrated a composite outlook that was at once traditional and modern, sophisticated and popular. The Xiahai City God and the Beigang Mazu are the two paragons of temple festivities in Taiwan. In addition, the City God Temple festival also drew population from other areas to Taipei. The relations and alliances between temples and musical troupes, on the other hand, dispersed the population of Taipei to other areas. Community interaction formed within the island of Taiwan had encouraged connections and developments of economy and people between different areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite his pioneering analysis on Taiwanese cultural subjectivity, Hung Yao-hsün's philosophical significance has not been studied. The aim of this paper is threefold. It first argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, Hung not only introduced western ideas, but also founded Formosan Philosophy: His adaptation of German Philosophy to cultural issues during the period of the Japanese colonization of Taiwan--just as with the Kyoto School in Japan and the New Confucianism in China--should be considered a part of the genuine thinking revolution in East Asia. This paper next examines the causal relationship between his philosophical theory and the spatial-temporal world in which he lived. It argues that Hung's interest in the nature of Taiwanese folk society is an advanced enquiry of his investigation of fundamental ontology. The Taiwan Nurses Association (TWNA) is publishing a special centenary issue to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the association in 2014. For this issue, TWNA invited the author to write a review article that addresses the involvement of the TWNA in professional diplomacy and international exchange over the past century. The author reviews the history of both TWNA and the International Council of Nurses and introduces the contributions of the association in the ield of professional diplomacy and the positive contributions of many Taiwan nursing leaders to global healthcare and society.
