Objective: To investigate the clinical and pathologic outcomes of a large group of retinoblastoma (RB) cases to ascertain the risk factors of RB optic nerve invasion., Methods: In this paper, we summarized the clinical and pathologic data of 381 retinoblastoma cases in Beijing Tongren Hospital observed from 1990 to 2002. Statistical analyses were performed on the sex, age, unilateral or bilateral cases, length of symptoms, clinical situation, stage, histological type and the degree of optic nerve invasion., Results: The degree of RB optic nerve invasion was closely correlated to clinical stage and tumor differentiation., Conclusion: Avoiding the risk factors of RB optic nerve invasion is very important for the prognosis of RB.

There is no definitely proven effective managements of central retinal vein occlusion to date. Much attention has been paid for radial optic neurotomy, although it is not accepted widely as a regular surgery, the improvement of fundus appearance was observed in some cases after surgery indeed. In this paper, we reviewed the case selective criterion, surgery method, surgery lancet, effectiveness and possible mechanism of this surgery.

A 5-year-old girl had suffered from infantile spasms since 3 months of age. Cranial computerized tomography revealed agenesis of the corpus callosum. Abnormal ocular fundus features consisted of bilateral disc colobomas and lacunar pigment change in her right eye. The clinical presentations were consistent with Aicardi syndrome. The ophthalmologic manifestations of Aicardi syndrome will be discussed in this paper.

This paper presents the case of a 29 year-old male with a left ethmoidal pyocele with orbital and intracranial extensions causing proptosis and a temporal visual field defect of the left eye. The patient had a history of nasal injury as a result of traffic accident eleven years ago, and was well until four months prior to his first visit at which time he had an onset of left eye pain, proptosis, and blurring of vision developed following a URI episode. Since then, fluctuation of symptoms was noted with exacerbation when contracting a common cold. The left ethmoidal pyocele was diagnosed via clinical features and roentgenographic findings. The patient received a Caldwell Luc Operation with endonasal ethmoidectomy and the postoperative condition was good except for constriction of the entire visual field and the depression of temporal internal isopters of the left eye.

Objective To summarize the clinical features of optic neuritis (ON) complicated with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, and evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment regimens, recurrence of ON, visual prognosis, HBV reactivation, liver function and liver structure changes. Methods and Results Total 19 patients (23 eyes) with acute ON complicated with chronic HBV infection admitted to Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2015 to June 2021 were included. There were 13 females and 6 males, 15 cases with monocular onset, 17 cases with unidirectional course of disease, and 6 cases with optic disc edema. The time to the worst visual acuity (peak time) was 3 (2, 7) d after onset, and 16/23 eyes had severe visual impairment. Enhanced MRI showed abnormal intensity in orbital, intraductal or intracranial segments of optic nerve, even involving optic nerve sheath and optic chiasm. Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) was positive in 5 cases and A type Sjögren's syndrome antibody (SSA) was weakly positive in one case. Cerebrospinal fluid (CBF) pressure decreased in 1/7 cases and white blood cell count increased in 2/7 cases. HBV DNA positive group (HBV DNA ≥ 100 IU/ml, 10 cases and 11 eyes) had more severe visual impairment than negative group (HBV DNA < 100 IU/ml, 9 cases and 12 eyes), the difference was statistically significant (Fisher's exact probability: P = 0.005, 0.003). HBV DNA positive group was treated with entecavir, and the recurrence of ON was ignored during follow-up. HBV DNA negative group didn't receive antiviral therapy, one case progressed to cirrhosis, 3 cases had abnormal liver function, and 2 cases had HBV reactivation. Conclusions The visual function of patients with ON complicated with chronic HBV infection was seriously impaired, and the response to glucocorticoid therapy was not good. The visual impairment of patients with positive HBV DNA was more serious than patients with negative HBV DNA. Patients with ON complicated with chronic HBV infection should be treated with antiviral drugs in combination with glucocorticoid therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
