Although the concept of body image was first introduced to Taiwan nursing in 1975, its application in the context of clinical nursing with regard to promoting humanistic patient-centered care has yet to be examined. This paper adopts a field-study approach to reinterpret the concept of body image with deeper and broader strength using patient vignettes, nursing case studies, and the findings of prior nursing research. The four main issues covered in this paper are: 1. The body image concept, 2. Building body schema and a postural model based on body experiences, 3. The characteristics of body image, and 4. The extended meaning of body image, including self-concept and the role function of relationship. This paper is expected to help nurses better understand the concept of body image and further apply this concept in clinical practice in order to improve the provision of humanistic patientcentered care. The paper explores the perioperative nursing experience of caring for a middle-aged adult who sought change in his appearance and received a hair transplant procedure two times. The researcher, considering physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects, made an overall nursing assessment of the patient's surgery and established that the patient had anxiety, acute pain and feeling of uncertainty. During the nursing process, the patient's favorite Japanese songs were played in order to relieve anxiety, and an ice pack and finger massage were provided in order to relieve pain. The patient needed to wait for new hair growth in transplanted hair follicles, So long-term companionship was provided each time he made a return visit to the doctor, which also gave him immediate care and consultation in order to reduce feelings of uncertainty towards the effectiveness of the hair transplant. We suggest making a health education video about "post-hair transplantation home care FAQs" so as to help similar patients' carry out home care correctly which may also improve the degree of satisfaction with the care of daytime surgery. This paper proposed the concepts of "body me" and "I body". Furthermore, the images of colostomy and fistula are used as examples to show that the body image of chronic illness has both temporal and situational meanings and shares a reciprocal relationship with self-identity (i.e., idem identity and ipse identity). Rather than providing an organic explanation, body image is an interactive relationship among time, situation, body, self, and others, which are all important aspects necessary to understand the individual and the world in which she/he lives. Finally, reflecting on humanistic clinical psychology, the ethical relationship practice of "we-ness" is proposed to shed illustrative light on the body image of chronic illness patients from a new perspective.

Although it is the lived body that performs caring actions, we regularly neglect the subjectivity of our bodies. The aim of this paper was to explore the relation between the lived body and the world, emotions as a mediator between body and mind, and the embodiment of group dialogue. 'Embodiment of group' includes listening to the inner voice, listening from the context, and using the mind as a mirror in order to promote self-directed learning. Achieving understanding the subjectivity of the body may significantly improve the quality of nursing care and clinical teaching.

Background: Obesity is a worldwide epidemic that threats the health and body image of those who suffer from this condition. While bariatric surgery has been shown to effectively assist patients to achieve weight loss goals and to improve body image, related research on this intervention is lacking in Taiwan., Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of bariatric surgery on body image in obese patients., Methods: This study used a longitudinal design. Data was collected from 2 hospitals located in northern and southern Taiwan. A total of 56 obese patients who had undergone bariatric surgery enrolled as participants, and the completion rate was 93.3%. Participants responded to a validated body image questionnaire immediately prior to and 3 months after bariatric surgery, with data used to assess the effects of the surgery. SPSS 20.0 software for windows was used for data analysis., Results: Participant scores for body image were low on the questionnaire administered prior to surgery, with a significant negative correlation identified between body mass index (BMI) and the value of appearance (r = -.36, p < .01). After bariatric surgery, the average EWL was 42.08%, which effectively achieved expected weight loss goals. Variables including overall body image, appearance evaluation, orientation, and body satisfaction of participants were significantly improved. Only the variable of muscle tension did not improve significantly. Postoperative body image did not correlate with either BMI or EWL., Conclusions: Three months after the bariatric surgery, the body image, appearance evaluation, and physical appearance satisfaction of participants had significantly improved. However, there was no improvement in muscle tension scores. In order to improve the post-surgery body image of patients, we recommend that healthcare workers provide patients with proper expectations of bariatric surgery and teach patients appropriate muscle-tension exercises. This paper reports the relation between bariatric surgery and body image. The results provide evidence for clinical and future research in this field.

This case report investigates the behavioral responses of body image change of a cerebellopontine angle tumor patient. Twelve process recordings obtained from a field study comprised the data for analysis. The dimensions of the subject's body image change were body structure, body function, body sensation, and social function change. Two types of behavioral response were delineated and categorized as the following: (1) Identifying the individual's body image change, such as seeking information, seeking reassurance, and comparative behavior. (2) Maintaining the integrity of individual's body image, such as rationalizing behavior, maintenance behavior, cooperative behavior and seeking religious support. This paper reports how the investigators used nursing interventions to help the subject gradually get through the process and adapt to the body image changes properly.

This paper presented the nursing experience of a patient who suffered from peripheral arterial occlusive disease and finally underwent low limb amputation. During the nursing period from August 21st to August 26th 2012, the author collected information via interview, observation, medical history and physical assessment. The author used Roy's adaptation model to assess holistic status and defined the following health problems: acute pain, body image disturbance, and deficit of self-care ability. In the process of nursing this patient, the author actively listened to the patient's concerns and feelings, established a good nurse-patient relationship, and cooperated with the patient's family. We helped the patient to receive the rehabilitation program and to adapt to post-amputation life. The author would like to share this experience as a reference to all nurses when attending to amputees, to place emphasis on the physical and psychological condition of the amputees, as well as nursing methods.
