Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, asthma and the development of significant airway symptoms following the ingestion of aspirin and other nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). At present, aspirin challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. Aspirin desensitization and aspirin therapy after desensitization (ATAD) is one of the classical therapies. This paper described the application of aspirin desensitization and ATAD in AERD and provided the reference for the comprehensive treatment of AERD.

Bronchial asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease, which is involved in a variety of cells and cellular components. In 2019, the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma issued by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Committee put forward the concept of type 2 inflammatory asthma for the first time. The updated evolution of GINA guidelines has promoted the development of biological agents and disease treatment, providing effective prevention and treatment for patients with severe asthma and improving disease outcome. This paper expounds the disease mechanism and management suggestions of type 2 inflammatory asthma in GINA guidelines, and analyzes the relevant clinical studies on targeted treatment of type 2 inflammatory asthma in recent years, in order to provide reference for in-depth understanding of level 3 prevention and management of patients with type 2 inflammatory asthma.

Chest tightness variant asthma (CTVA) was first reported and named by Chinese scholars in 2013. It is a new clinical type of asthma characterized by chest tightness as the only or primary symptom, without typical asthma manifestations such as recurrent wheezing and shortness of breath, and without wheezing sounds heard during lung auscultation. The overall epidemiological data on CTVA is currently unavailable. Its pathogenesis is similar to that of typical asthma, involving eosinophilic airway inflammation. Due to the lack of typical clinical manifestations, insufficient knowledge of this disease in some clinicians and some other reasons, CTVA is susceptible to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Currently, the diagnostic criteria for CTVA are: chest tightness as the only or primary symptom, without typical asthma symptoms and signs such as wheezing and shortness of breath, and with any one of the objective indicators of variable airflow limitation. Effective anti-asthma treatment is required, and other diseases that cause chest tightness, such as cardiovascular, digestive, nervous, muscular, and mental diseases should be excluded. CTVA treatment follows that of typical asthma, but the specific treatment duration is uncertain and may require long-term management. Traditional Chinese medicine has shown some therapeutic effects on CTVA. Most CTVA patients have a good prognosis after active anti-asthma treatment. This paper analyzes and summarizes the research of CTVA in China from 2013 and provides new perspectives for further exploration of CTVA.

Bronchial asthma is a common chronic inflammatory airway disease. Small airway dysfunction (SAD) can be present in asthmatics with different phenotypes, clinical stages and varied severity, and has implication for drug efficacy and patient prognosis. Currently, there is no consensus on the criteria for SAD, and its inflammatory mechanism remains unclear. In this paper, we reviewed the research advances in the evaluation, prevalence, pathogenesis, clinical features and treatment of SAD in asthmatics to improve awareness of the disease.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has affected 660 million people and resulted in 6.7 million deaths. At present, a variety of risk factors related to the severity of COVID-19 have been identified, but whether allergic rhinitis and asthma will affect SARS-CoV-2 infection remains controversial. In general, there is no sufficient evidence to support that allergic rhinitis or asthma is a risk factor for increasing the rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection or aggravating the disease. Some studies even show that atopy may be a protective factor to alleviate SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is related to the decreased expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the receptor required for SARS-CoV-2 to enter cells, in atopic individuals. This paper reviews the influence of the severity and treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma on SARS-CoV-2 infection, in order to provide some references for establishing strategies for prevention, risk stratification and treatment of COVID-19.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) has had a tremendous impact on the diagnosis and treatment of COPD. This article reviewed the evolution of the definition of COPD in GOLD and the change of its treatment strategy. In addition, in light of relevant clinical studies, the paper attempted to illustrate the importance of understanding the heterogeneous nature of COPD, and analyzed the possible consequences of ignoring this nature, including confusion with bronchial asthma caused by lung function as the "gold standard" and excessive use of inhaled glucocorticoids (ICS). It is suggested that in clinical practice, the essential characteristics of COPD patients should be clarified by collecting a variety of information in order to provide personalized treatment for patients' assessment, therapy and rehabilitation. At the same time, more basic and clinical research on COPD should be conducted, based on the nature of the disease, to explore new treatment methods.

Shegan Mahuang Decoction has been used in clinical practice for thousands of years, and is a classical formula for treating asthma and other respiratory diseases, with the effects of ventilating lung, dispersing cold, and relieving cough and asthma. This paper summarized the history, clinical application and mechanism of Shegan Mahuang Decoction, and predicted its quality markers(Q-markers) based on the "five principles" of Q-markers. The results suggested that irisflorentin, tectoridin, tectorigenin, irigenin, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, asarinin, methyleugenol, shionone, epifriedelanol, tussilagone, 6-gingerol, trigonelline, cavidine, schizandrin, and schizandrin B could be used as Q-markers of Shegan Mahuang Decoction, which provided a basis for the quality control and subsequent research and development of Shegan Mahuang Decoction.

Respiratory tract viruses are the second leading cause of olfactory dysfunction. Between 2019 to 2022, the world has been plagued by the problem of olfaction caused by the COVID-19. As we learn more about the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2（SARS-CoV-2）, with the recognition that olfactory dysfunction is a key symptom of this disease process, there is a greater need than ever for evidence-based management of postinfectious olfactory dysfunction（PIOD）. Asthma,a chronic inflammatory disease of respiratory system,is characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness,chronic airway inflammation,mucus secretion,and airway remodeling.Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) are a kind of multifunctional stem cells,which have the ability of self-renewal and multi-directional differentiation.They are involved in a variety of physiological processes,such as immune response,antigen presentation,inflammatory response,and cell migration.MSCs plays a key role in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma,while the underlying mechanism remains to be studied.MSC are a potential target for the treatment of bronchial asthma.This paper reviews the mechanism of MSC in the treatment of asthma.

Airway inflammation is the most important pathological basis of chronic airway diseases. The detection and evaluation of airway inflammation is helpful for the diagnosis, treatment and management of airway diseases. Exhaled nitric oxide is the most widely used noninvasive airway inflammation detection technique in recent years, which provides a simple and quick reference for the diagnosis and management of chronic airway diseases, but there are still some controversies and deficiencies. This paper briefly expounds the biological significance of exhaled nitric oxide and detecting technique, summarizes the clinical application and the deficiencies of exhaled nitric oxide detection. In the future, with the further researchers on technology and the accumulation of application experiences, the detection technology of exhaled nitric oxide will play a more significant role in the accurate management of chronic airway diseases.

Ozone has become one of the major global environmental pollutants, and has attracted more and more attention in the field of air quality and public health. Ground-level ozone concentrations have been increasing in recent years, causing serious burden to the human respiratory system and social economy. Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two common airway diseases. Ozone exposure can induce the occurrence, development and exacerbation of chronic airway diseases, short-term ozone exposure can induce non eosinophilic asthma, long-term ozone exposure can induce COPD, and ozone exposure can also induce acute attack of asthma and acute exacerbation of COPD. The effects are mainly that ozone exposure can mediate inflammatory response, oxidative stress, airway hyperresponsiveness, and DNA damage, and lead to decreased lung function, changes in microbial communities, and disruption of the air-blood barrier. This paper reviewed a series of epidemiological studies and animal experiments on asthma and COPD related to ozone exposure in recent years, and mainly generalized the effects of ozone exposure on airway diseases. Finally, this paper summarized the shortcomings of existing studies, providing a beneficial direction and ideas for further research on the hazards of ozone exposure on asthma and COPD and for exploring new intervention targets.

Asthma in the elderly is a special type of asthma, with special pathophysiology, clinical characteristics, complications and drug reaction, resulting in its diagnosis and treatment complicated, with higher morbidity and mortality. Combined with the newly published Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma in the Elderly, this paper calls for strengthening the management of asthma in the elderly, promoting relevant research, and perfecting the clinical diagnosis and treatment program suitable for the elderly asthma patients, so as to improve the level of asthma control and improve the prognosis.

Respiratory allergic disease mainly include asthma and allergic rhinitis.According to their extremely similarpathogenesis and inflammatory pathological changes,asthma and allergic rhinitis,are regarded as the concept of "one airway, one disease". In recent years, The research on the target of allergens in the pathogenesis mechanism is more in-depth, and the CCR3 gene is a major research target. The study found that the CCR3 gene is an important target gene for the development of respiratory allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The related inflammatory cells are the main cells responding for the downstream cascade triggered by CCR3 activation, which directly or indirectly cause allergic inflammation through itself or its secretions.Therefore, researches on the roles of CCR3 gene and its related inflammatory cells become hot topics in the clinical treatment of respiratory allergic diseases. Asthma is a kind of chronic respiratory inflammation, commonly with breathlessness, chest tightness, coughing, recurrent episodes of wheezing and airflow obstruction, severely affecting human health. A variety of immunocytes are involved in this chronic disease. Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) has a long history in the treatment of asthma. A large number of studies have shown that CHM could ameliorate asthma symptoms through regulating cellular immune responses. This paper reviewed the studies of CHM on the regulation of immunocytes and their mechanisms in recent years, including the count of inflammatory cells, maturation of dendritic cells, balance of helper T cell subtypes, induction of regulatory T cells and intracellular signaling pathways. Type Ⅱ innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) is a family of innate immune lymphocytes, which provide effective immune responses to cytokines. ILC2 are regulated by the nuclear transcription factor ROR alpha and GATA3, secreting cytokines IL-5 and IL-13, etc. Animal models have shown that ILC2 are involved in allergic diseases, such as asthma and atopic dermatitis, and also play a very important role in the metabolic balance. In addition, recent reports suggest that ILC2 not only play a role in the initial stages of the disease, but also can lead to chronic pathological changes in the disease, such as fibrosis, and may have an effect on acquired immunity. This paper mainly focus in the role and regulation of ILC2 cells, and review the research status of ILC2 in the field of chronic upper airway inflammatory diseases including allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis.

With literature of professor CHEN Yinglong such as Medical Notes of Doctor CHEN Yinglongfor Taiwan Compatriots,the'experience of doctor CHEN Yinglong treating common diseases in Fujian and Tai-wan is summarized. The diseases in the paper are constipation, retention of urine, asthma, vec6rdia, bi syndromeinsomnia, thoracic obstruction, pediatric obesity and freckle of face, etc. It is discovered that professor CHENYinglong treated diseases with combination of acupuncture and medication and accurate acupoints according to thefeature of climate in Fujian and Taiwan.

Bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as chronic airway inflammatory diseases, seriously threaten the health of human beings. Chinese medicine has obvious advantages in prevention and treatment of them. "Preventive treatment theory" is a sort summarization of preventive medicine in Chinese medicine. The theory is not only reflected at the disease prevention levels, also embodied in the active treatment and the rehabilitation process. It was especially deep and colorfully embodied in the prevention and treatment of chronic airway inflammatory diseases such as asthma and COPD. In this paper,clarified were the prevention and treatment targets, ways of thinking and methods in different stages of asthma and COPD from various viewpoints including prevention before disease occurrence, treating disease at disease onset, preventing the aggravation once disease occurs, and consolidation after disease occurs. We hope to improve ways of thinking and prevention and treatment levels of bronchial asthma and COPD by Chinese medicine.

The operation and application of Tiantu (CV 22) in emergency are discussed in the paper. The stimulating methods at Tiantu (CV 22) are acupuncture and pressing technique. The correct insertion of needle and proper depth and direction of insertion are required during acupuncture. The pressing technique stress the pressing strength and pressing time. Acupuncture or pressing technique is suitable for the emergent measurement of asthma, asthmatic breathing, coma, blockage of phlegm, hiccup, sore throat, etc. It is indicated that Tiantu (CV 22) is the key point in the emergency and phlegm resolving. Based on the characteristics of the point as promoting qi circulation, reducing the reversed qi and resolving phlegm, in light of the proper points combination by different syndromes and in terms of the correct and safe stimulating methods, Tiantu (CV 22) can achieve the immediate therapeutic effects in the emergent situations.

Professor LIN Lin's clinical experiences of comprehensive internal and external therapy for asthma was summarized in the paper. According to professor LIN Lin's experiences, asthma was differentiated as cold, heat, wind, stasis and deficiency pattern/syndrome in clinic. Asthma of cold type was treated with Xiao qinglong Decoction and Sanzi Yangqin Decoction combined with cupping, moxibustion, acupuncture and Bian stone therapy. Asthma of heat type was treated with Dingchuan Decoction combined with acupuncture, scraping therapy and moving cupping. Asthma of wind type was treated with Masu Erchen Decoction combined with acupuncture and cupping. Asthma of stasis type was treated with Xue fu Zhuyu Decoction combined with acupuncture, tapping manipulation, moving cupping and Bian stone therapy. Asthma of deficiency type was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Decoction, Shenge Shenqi Pill combined with warming needling therapy, acupoint injection and Bian stone therapy. A medical case was enclosed to explain the diagnosis and treatment idea "seeking the root cause of the disease in treatment" and "strengthening the antipathogenic qi to eliminate pathogenic factors" in the comprehensive internal and external therapy.

Currently, about 300 million people worldwide are affected by asthma. Most of these sufferers inhale immunosuppressants (ie corticosteroids) and beta-adrenergic receptor agonists for their asthma treatment. However, about 5%-10% of patients of asthma have poor response to such treatment. Investigation of kinase signaling pathway and nuclear transcription factor as a target molecule in the treatment of allergic asthma has been the concern of scholars home and abroad. This paper reviewed inhibitors of kinase signaling pathway and nuclear transcription factors for the treatment of asthma.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of loratadine, a new generation of antihistaminics, in the treatment of childhood asthma., Methods: The papers related to loratadine treatment for childhood asthma were searched in the database of PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrance, CNKI and CBMdisc (January 1990 to December 2010) electronically and manually. According to the Cochrane reviewer's handbook, the quality of the enrolled papers was assessed and a systematic review was performed., Results: A total of 179 papers were obtained. Eleven randomized controlled trials met the criteria and were included in this study. The 11 trials included 317 children with asthma: 159 cases in the loratadine treatment group and 158 cases in the control group. All included studies belonged to the B class according to the quality evaluation criteria. Meta analysis showed that the clinical symptoms were improved more, the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) 4 and 8 weeks posttreatment and the peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) 8 weeks posttreatment were higher in the loratadine treatment group than in the control group. The treatment-related adverse effects, fatigue, tachycardia and palpitation, occurred less in the loratadine treatment group compared with the control group., Conclusions: Loratadine is safe and effective for the treatment of childhood asthma.

In the present paper, the authors review the development of experimental and clinical studies on acupuncture treatment of bronchial asthma in recent 10 years. Regarding clinical studies, results showed that acupuncture could (1) regulate cardiac-pulmonary function; and (2) adjust immune state and relieve inflammatory reactions in bronchial asthma patients. Animal experiments showed that acupuncture could function in (1) improving pulmonary function; (2) reducing accumulation of the peripheral eosinophile granulocytes (EOS), relieving the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the air-passage mucosa and promoting the apoptosis of EOS in the lung and air-passages; (3) down-regulating the expression of air-passage remodeling-related protein insulin growth factor-1; (4) suppressing the secretion of tumor necrosis factor and endothelin; (5) attenuating allergic reaction; (6) regulating neuroendocrine activity; and (7) modulating intracellular second messenger activities. However, rigorous clinical study design is not enough, so that the reliability of the results is limited. In spite of many indicators of animal experiments have been selected, but their correlations are not in close association, resulting in poor complementation and mutual identification of the acquired findings. For this reason, its clinical efficacies need to be researched further according to principles of evidence-based medicine.

The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect and mechanism of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive K(+) (MitoK(ATP)) channel on the proliferation of airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) in asthmic rats. Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly assigned into 2 groups (18 in each): (1) Asthma group: the asthmic rat model was established by ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and excitation; (2) Normal group: rats were subjected to inhalation of equal amount of normal saline. The rat ASMCs were isolated from fresh lung tissues and cultured respectively as follows: (1) CONTROL GROUP: normal ASMCs were cultured under normoxia for 24 h; (2) Diazoxide group: normal ASMCs were cultured under normoxia for 24 h with diazoxide (an opener of MitoK(ATP) channel); (3) 5-HD group: normal ASMCs were cultured under normoxia for 24 h with 5-hydroxydecanoate (5-HD) (an antagonist of MitoK(ATP) channel); (4) Asthma group: Asthmic ASMCs were cultured under normoxia for 24 h; (5) Asthma + diazoxide group: Asthmic ASMCs were cultured under normoxia with diazoxide for 24 h; (6) Asthma + 5-HD group: Asthmic ASMCs were cultured under normoxia with 5-HD for 24 h. The mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) was detected using Rhodamine 123 (R-123). The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected by DCF fluorescence. The expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) mRNA was examined by RT-PCR. The proliferation and apoptosis of rat ASMCs were examined respectively by MTT colorimetric assay and cell cycle analysis. The results were as follows. (1) After exposure to diazoxide for 24 h, the R-123 fluorescence intensity, the ROS level, NF-κB mRNA expression and the MTT absorbance value (A value) in normal ASMCs were significantly increased, and the apoptosis of rat ASMCs was significantly decreased compared to the control group (P<0.05). However, there was no significant changes in those indices after the normal ASMCs had been exposed to 5-HD for 24 h. (2) In Asthma and Asthma + diazoxide groups, the R-123 fluorescence intensity, ROS level and the MTT A value were markedly increased, and the apoptosis was markedly decreased compared to control group (P<0.05). These changes were more obvious in Asthma + diazoxide group than those in Asthma group (P<0.05). 5-HD partly weakened the effect of asthma on the R-123 fluorescence intensity, ROS level and the MTT A value and the apoptosis of rat ASMCs (P<0.05). R-123 fluorescence intensity and NF-κB mRNA expression were positively correlated with ROS level. NF-κB mRNA expression was positively correlated with the MTT A value and negatively correlated with the apoptosis of rat ASMCs. All the results suggest that the opening of MitoK(ATP) channel followed by a depolarization of ΔΨm contributes to the increase in ROS level and NF-κB mRNA expression in rat ASMCs and to the unbalance between cell proliferation and apoptosis of ASMCs induced by asthma. This might be a mechanism of the development of airway remodeling in asthma.

The authors preliminarily analyze and compare influence of different stages of attack and remission, different syndrome types, and age of the patient, duration of illness, state of illness on the therapeutic effects of acupuncture and moxibustion for treatment of bronchial asthma by analysis and summarization of 381 clinical papers about acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of bronchial asthma. It is found that most studies hold that acupuncture has better therapeutic effect on asthma at acute stage, and moxibustion has a better effect at the remission stage. Acupuncture and moxibustion have a better effect on cold asthma than hot asthma, and the shorter the course of disease and the younger, the better the effect, conversely, the effect is worse. Mild asthma is the main indication of acupuncture and moxibustion, but considerable more clinical studies show that above factors have no obvious influence on the therapeutic effect, even show contrary to this result. It is indicated that in the studies from now on, only strictly design and fully consider the effects of various factors, can scientifically reveal various disease factors influencing therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on bronchial asthma, and expound the indications of different acupuncture and moxibustion methods for treatment of bronchial asthma.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of specific immunotherapy (SIT) with standardized house dust mite (HDM) vaccine on allergic asthmatic patients., Methods: The investigation was a multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. 132 patients with mild to moderate asthma who were allergic to HDM, recruited from three hospitals of China (The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College, Shenyang General Military Hospital, Suzhou Children's Hospital), were randomly allocated to the active group (n = 66) or the control group (n = 66) respectively. The active group received SIT with a standardized depot Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) extract absorbed to aluminium hydroxide (Alutard SQ, ALK-Abelló, Denmark), while the control group received a placebo containing histamine dihydrochloride by subcutaneous injections for 1 year. Treatment of each group was started from the initial concentration. Updosing was performed with weekly injections from four 10-fold dose-increase vials (active group: 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 SQ-U/ml, control group: 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 10 microg/ml. 100,000 SQ-U/ml of Der p extract contains 9.8 microg/ml of the majoy allergen Der p1). The single-dose was injected weekly with 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 ml of each concentration in turn from the preceding 3 vials, totally for 9 weeks. Subsequently, the dose with 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 ml of the highest concentration was injected weekly from the 10th-14th week and a maintenance dose with 1 ml was reached at the 15th week. The dosing interval was then gradually increased to 2, 4, 6 weeks until the end of the first 26-weeks updosing phase (phase I, H(1)). Thereafter, the dosing continued at 6-week intervals for maintenance phase (phase II, H(2)) till the end of the complete treatment. The patient was observed for at least 30 minutes in the clinic after each injection., Results: A total of 132 subjects were randomized and 129 subjects (64 in the active group, 65 in the control group) completed the whole study. Dropouts included three females because of poor compliance, being afraid of the epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and emigration respectively. Both groups were comparable at baseline in all clinical and laboratory parameters. The mean daily symptom scores in 4-weekly began to diverge at the 29th-32nd week with the active group showing a significant lower scores (0.17 +/- 0.33) than the control group (0.39 +/- 0.74, Z = 2.031, P < 0.05) till the end of the study. Significant difference was found in average daily symptom scores between H(1) (0.29 +/- 0.39) and H(2) (0.19 +/- 0.27) in the active group (Z = 2.923, P < 0.01), while no significant difference was found between H(1) (0.45 +/- 0.62) and H(2) (0.40 +/- 0.68) in the placebo group (Z = 1.885, P > 0.05). There were significant differences in subjective judgement of the improvement about overall asthmatic symptoms, exacerbation severity and exacerbation frequency between the active group (96.9%, 95.3%, 95.4%) and the control group (80.0%, 75.4%, 83.1%) with the self-evaluation questionnaire (chi(2) = 13.246, 11.576, 16.204, all P < 0.01). The trend line of daily medication scores in weekly intervals showed a significant decline. The mean daily medication score of phase II (0.20 +/- 0.36) was significant lower than that of phase I (0.33 +/- 0.67, Z = 3.344, P < 0.01), whereas the control group did not show a significant difference between phase II (0.35 +/- 0.96) and phase I (0.32 +/- 0.95, Z = 0.744, P > 0.05). After 1-year treatment, no significant differences were found in morning and evening peak expiratory flow of predicted value (PEF%), forced expiratory volume in one second of predicted value (FEV(1)/FVC), forced vital capacity of predicted value (FVC%), forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity ratio (FEV(1)/FVC), provoking dose decreasing FEV(1) by 20% (PD(20)-FEV(1)) between the active group [(97 +/- 17)%, (98 +/- 18)%, (91 +/- 11)%, (98 +/- 9)%, (82 +/- 10)%, 2.35 (7.9) micromol] and the control group [(99 +/- 19)%, (100 +/- 19)%, (90 +/- 14)%, (99 +/- 13)%, (82 +/- 9)%, 1.80 (7.8) micromol] (t = 0.170 - 0.630, Z = 0.264, all P > 0.05). Skin index (SI) to Der p in the active group (1.2 +/- 0.5) was significantly lower than that of the control group (1.5 +/- 0.6) after treatment (t = 2.395, P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the level of serum sIgE against Der p between groups, which was 76.80 (97.0) kU/L in active group and 66.50 (99.3) kU/L in the control group (Z = 0.232, P > 0.05). The frequency of systemic adverse reactions graded by guidelines based on the position paper of European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), was 5.7% and 1.8% of the total injections in the active group and the control group, respectively. Although significant difference was found in adverse reactions between groups (chi(2) = 4.705, P < 0.05), all were mild or moderate. The majority occurred within 30 minute after injection and were controlled well with symptomatic therapy. No any severe systemic adverse reaction was shown in the study., Conclusion: One year specific immunotherapy with standardized house dust mite (HDM) vaccine significantly improved symptoms and reduced medication use in mild to moderate allergic asthmatic patients. SIT also reduced skin prick test reactivity to Der p. Complying with the EAACI immunotherapy guidelines, SIT with standardized HDM vaccine was a safe treatment.

Purpose: To review the recent developments in asthma research in China, presenting the background of further asthma research and promoting academic exchanges between Chinese and foreign respirologists., Data Sources: A literature search was conducted using 5 authoritative journals covering the years 1994-1998., Study Selection: Sixty-seven of 238 asthma-remated original articles published between the years 1994-1998 were selected to reflect the recent developments in asthma in China., Data Extraction: The papers reviewed pertain mainly to the epidemiology, genetics, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of asthma., Results: Since 1993, the hot topics in asthma research in China have been pathogenesis, prevention and treatment. There has been relatively less investigation into the genetics of asthma in China. An epidemiological survey of asthma has been conducted in parts of China and was reviewed., Conclusions: More and more attention has been paid to the study of asthma during the last five years in China. The prevalence of asthma has increased in recent years. The study of the pathogenesis of asthmatic airway inflammation has made further progress, which will help the management and treatment of asthma. The treatments for asthma, including herbal medicine, have been explored and the clinical efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids has been established.

We have studied on preventing and treating anaphylactic asthma with Zusanli (S36) point immunotherapy (ZPIT). Sixty-nine patients were observed. The results showed that the clinical curative effect of ZPIT was not only much higher than that of conventional desensitization therapy, but also the patients' total IgE level was reduced, anti-acarid IgE was lowered, SIgA level was raised, the absolute eosinophilic granulocyte level dropped and pulmonary function recovered. Animal experiment results showed that the ZPIT could more effectively suppress the guinea pigs' anaphylactic asthma allergized by albumin and more obviously resist the guinea pigs' bronchial spasm induced by histamine and acetylcholine than the conventional desensitization therapy and injected normal saline. The immunomodulating action of the ZPIT are elucidated from clinical study and animal experiment in the paper.

This paper reports that substitution of Glucosidorum Tripterygii Totorum (GTT) for cortical hormone used to treat corticosteroid-dependent type of aspirin asthma, 60 mg, 3 times a day. The result showed that total effective rate was 100% including 31 cases of marked effective (86.11%) and 5 cases of effective (13.89%). Corticosteroid in the blood was significantly elevated to normal level after treatment (P < 0.001), Cushing's syndrome was cleared up gradually. The blood glucose in 9 cases complicated with diabetes mellitus was recovered and glucosuria test was negative. The value of peak expiratory flow (PEF) was increased to some extent (P of male < 0.01, of female < 0.05), especially on those not complicated with emphysema. There was no side-effect during the treatment and could avoid the side-effect of cortical hormone. This therapy was valuable.

On the basis of satisfying clinical effects of Qingfei Bushen Decoction, the authors carried out experimental studies with animals on anti-anaphylactic asthma with the decoction (200% condensed) to probe into the effective mechanism. The experimental results showed that the condensed decoction could effectively suppress rats' passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and guinea pigs' anaphylactic asthma allergized by egg protein. The results also showed that the condensed decoction obviously resisted the guinea pigs' bronchial spasm induced by histamine and acetylcholine, and it could significantly promote the multiplication of rats' thymus gland. Thymus gland multiplication and immunomodulating action are also discussed in the paper.

Objective * To explore the potential impact of early-life environmental exposure on childhood asthma in Chongqing, China. Methods * A case-control study was designed. The cases with asthma diagnosis were enrolled from outpatients of the respiratory medicine departments and the healthy children without history of asthma were enrolled from health check-up clinics of the child health care departments in two tertiary children's hospitals in Chongqing from September 2020 to January 2022. The children in the two groups had all lived in Chongqing since birth and their home addresses had not changed before they were 3 years old. A self-developed "Children's Early-Life Environment Survey" was used to collect general personal data, family information, child health status, birth history, and indoor environment from birth to 3 years old (second-hand smoke, dampness and mold points in bedroom, seen cockroaches in bedroom, bedroom cleaning frequency, air conditioning and air purifier use, and decoration). Based on the home address information before 3 years old, annual particular matter 2.5 (PM2.5) exposure levels were estimated by using a high spatiotemporal resolution model. Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression models were used to analyze the early-life environmental factors affecting the development of childhood asthma. The risk factors which were statistically significant in univariate Logistic regression or had clinical significance were included in the multivariate model. Results * A total of 220 asthma cases and 636 healthy control children were enrolled. The mean age of the asthma cases and the controls were (7.4±2.1) and (7.6± 2.1) years old, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in age, gender, gestational age, birth weight, mode of delivery, family size, annual family income, maternal education level and living space per person. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that early-life bedroom dampness and mold exposure [odds ratio (OR) =2.155, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.304-3.559, P=0.003], bedroom cockroach exposure (OR=1.830, 95%CI 1.287-2.601, P=0.001), bedroom air conditioner use (OR= 2.328, 95%CI 1.098 - 4.937, P=0.028), second-hand smoke exposure (OR=1.762, 95%CI 1.272 - 2.440, P=0.001), and long term exposure to PM2.5 at one year old (OR=1.063, 95%CI 1.034-1.093, P=0.000) increased the risk of childhood asthma. Daily use of air purifier (OR=0.416, 95%CI 0.213 - 0.812, P=0.010) could reduce the risk of childhood asthma. Conclusion * Early-life environmental exposure is of great significance for the development of childhood asthma. Early-life bedroom dampness and mold exposure, cockroach exposure, second-hand smoke, incorrect use of air conditioner, and long-term exposure of children to PM2.5 in the first year after birth are independent risk factors for the development of childhood asthma. This paper reports a particularly extensive pedigree in which 33 (13 men and 20 women) of its 118 members (60 men and 58 women) through four generations had bronchial asthma. There were 22 cases of extrinsic asthma (accounting for 66.7%) which occurred chiefly in the juveniles and 11 cases of mixed asthma (accounting for 33.3%) which occurred mainly in the middle-aged and old people. Pedigree chart suggested the pattern of autosomal dominant inheritance. It was also found that when either husband or wife had the disease, 37.3% (19/51) of the offsprings would have it; and when both husband and wife had it, 83.3% (10/12) of their children would have it. Nevertheless, the patient II9 had two sons (III37, III39) free from asthma; and yet, their two children (IV53, IV54) had the disease. This is an exception. It is thus thought that in addition to hereditary factors, environmental factors and individual differences must also play a certain role.

Desensitize treatment of 117 cases of allergic asthma caused by allergens has been carried out using acupuncture points with the extract of the allergen (or allergens) in this paper. After first course of the treatment, the extract of allergen was taken again to make intradermal injection. Diameter of redness and swelling on the skin was significantly reduced in comparison with that before the treatment (P less than 0.01). These cases were followed up for more than 2-3 years. 24.79% of the cases was basically controlled; 19.66% significantly curative effect; 46.15% better. Comparison of curative difference of this group with the other two control groups was significant (P less than 0.01). Therefore, this method is of considerable clinical value and worth popular in the treatment of allergic asthma.
