The article analyses achievements of contemporary historiography in the study of the role and significance of the Gorodel Union of 1413 in the formation of the gentry class of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The key subjects of scientific research of Polish, Lithuanian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian historians are identified. It is emphasised that these subjects, as a rule, are not an independent historiographical problem and act as part of a broader research discussion about the causes and results of the Union of 1413 in the system of relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland. In conclusion, it is noted that despite the differences in the interpretation of a number of specific issues, researchers generally agree in the statement that the acts of the Gorodel Union and the heraldic adoption, both in their content and in their consequences, are one of the key stages in the process of forming the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Motivation Models of the Names of Intellectual Processes and Properties (on the Material of East Slavic Languages)This article offers an analysis of motivation models of the names of intellectual processes, properties and states in East Slavic languages at different stages of their development. Focusing on the Belarusian and Ukrainian material, the study adopts the approach of diachronic cognitive onomasiology, according to which the study of nomination processes helps to understand mechanisms of verbal thought. The analysis revealed source frames of the names of cognitive activity: perception, psycho-emotional sphere, space, movement, physical activity, physical characteristics, social sphere, physiology, speech activity and light. The relative number of nominations formed by a particular model is proportional to the use of the corresponding metaphor in communication. Modern East Slavic languages are very similar in terms of their nomination models of cognitive processes, properties and states. However, differences between modern Belarusian and Ukrainian on the one hand, and the language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on the other, are more significant. Modele motywacyjne nazw procesów i właściwości intelektualnych (na materiale języków wschodniosłowiańskich)Artykuł przedstawia analizę modeli motywacyjnych nazw procesów, właściwości i stanów intelektualnych w językach wschodniosłowiańskich na różnych etapach ich rozwoju. Skupiając się na materiale białoruskim i ukraińskim, analiza przyjmuje podejście kognitywnej onomazjologii diachronicznej, zgodnie z którym badanie procesów nominacji pomaga zrozumieć mechanizmy myślenia werbalnego. Analiza wykazała ramy źródłowe nazw aktywności poznawczej: percepcji, sfery psycho-emocjonalnej, przestrzeni, ruchu, aktywności fizycznej, cech fizycznych, sfery społecznej, fizjologii, aktywności mowy i światła. Liczba nominacji utworzonych na bazie określonego modelu jest proporcjonalna do częstotliwości użycia odpowiadającej mu metafory w komunikacji. Współczesne języki wschodniosłowiańskie są bardzo podobne pod względem modeli nominacji procesów, właściwości i stanów poznawczych. Natomiast różnice pomiędzy współczesnym językiem białoruskim i ukraińskim z jednej strony, a językiem Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego z drugiej, są bardziej znaczące.

From international history to one’s own history – Belorusian minority in Poland After World War II the Belarusians who did not leave Poland could gain upward mobility only if they avoided displaying their national and cultural distinctiveness. Belarusians made a political choice which coincided with a vision of history and thus accepted a historical narrative spread by communist circles. The narrative constructed by the Belarusian minority was consistent with the officially proclaimed state ideological narrative. It contained mostly the history of the Communist Party of Western Belarus and described a difficult situation of Belarus in the Second Polish Republic and during World War II (especially the Great Patriotic War). The Belarusian community made first attempts to rebuild the current vision of the world in 1980–1981. Students tried to create an alternative historical narrative that contradicted the communist one. However, it was a gradual collapse of the communist system that became an impetus for more active development of the Belarusian minority in Poland, and consequently, the creation of its own national vision of history. The Belarusian heritage has been based on the Belarusian People's Republic and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and not, as it was in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Belarus or after 1994, on the Republic of Belarus and the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Bialorusini, dokonując wyboru politycznego, pokrywającego sie z wyborem wizji historii, akceptowali obraz dziejow prezentowany przez środowiska komunistyczne. Konstruowany przez mniejszośc bialoruską przekaz historyczny zgodny byl z oficjalnie gloszonym panstwowym przekazem ideologicznym. Dominowaly treści o historii Komunistycznej Partii Zachodniej Bialorusi, o trudnej sytuacji bialoruskiej w II RP i w latach II wojny światowej, ale z naciskiem polozonym jedynie na okres Wielkiej Wojny Ojczyźnianej. Pierwsze proby przebudowy dotychczasowej wizji świata przez spolecznośc bialoruską zostaly podjete w latach 1980–1981. Zwlaszcza środowiska studenckie probowaly stworzyc alternatywe dla dotychczasowego skomunizowanego, bialoruskiego przekazu historycznego. Jednak dopiero stopniowy upadek systemu komunistycznego stal sie impulsem do coraz bardziej aktywnego rozwoju mniejszości bialoruskiej w Polsce, a co za tym idzie takze kreowania wlasnej, narodowej wizji dziejow. Fundamentem, na ktorym budowana byla pamiec o dziedzictwie, stalo sie odwolywanie sie do Bialoruskiej Republiki Ludowej i Wielkiego Ksiestwa Litewskiego, a nie, jak to mialo miejsce w Bialoruskiej Socjalistycznej Republice Sowieckiej czy po 1994 r. w Republice Bialoruś, zwyciestwa w Wielkiej Wojnie Ojczyźnianej.

Dictionaries in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – a Contribution to the History of (Western)Ruthenian Lexicography and Word-Inventory In the article an attempt to describe the oldest Western Ruthenian dictionary has been made. The analysis is based on the following texts: 1) Leksis s tolkovanīem slovenskikh mov prosto of the first part of the 16th century, 2) Leksis siriech recheniia v"krat"tsie s"bran(")ny. I īz slove(n)skago iazyka naprosty(ĭ) ruskīĭ diale(k)t istol(")kovany L,Z by L. Zizaniy (Vilno 1596), 3) Leksīkon slavenorosskīĭ ī imen tl"kovanīe by P. Berynda (Kiev 1627), 4) Sinonima slavenorosskaia (the end of the 17th century). The focus of attention is directed to lexicographic specificity of the antique texts, the elements of their macro- and microstructures, sources and techniques of material documentation, which made it possible to observe the evolution of lexicographers` methodological procedure in the range of the structure of an entry, e.g.: efforts to introduce grammatical information, qualifiers (mostly etymological and stylistic), and material exemplification. Dictionaries, which were essentially used to learn the language of liturgical celebration, contained religious vocabulary. It should be noted, however, that their authors introduced Ruthenian words of various thematic groups and stylistic registers to the translated parts of lexicons. In Berynda`s dictionary Polish loan words appeared as entries. Glownie uwage skupiono na specyfice leksykograficznej zabytkow, elementach ich makro-i mikrostruktury, źrodlach oraz sposobach dokumentacji materialu. Pozwolilo to zaobserwowac pewną ewolucje warsztatu metodologicznego leksykografow w zakresie budowy artykulu haslowego, jak np. proby wprowadzania informacji gramatycznej, kwalifikatorow (glownie etymologicznych, stylistycznych) oraz egzemplifikacji materialowej. Slowniki, przeznaczone zasadniczo do nauki jezyka liturgicznego i lektury ksiąg cerkiewnych, gromadzily przede wszystkim leksyke religijną. Nalezy jednak zauwazyc, ze do przekladowej cześci leksykonow ich autorzy wprowadzali slownictwo ruskie nalezące do roznych grup tematycznych i rejestrow stylistycznych. W charakterze wyrazow haslowych slownika Beryndy mogly wystepowac rowniez pozyczki polskie.

Belorussian zamowy and other folk medicine texts as evidence for linguistic and cultural permeation in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania This paper presents the lexical material stored in the Belorussian zamowy : names of holidays, prayers, designations of the sacred and clergy portaits, as well as names and nationalities. The documentation, coming from two sets of Belorussian zamowy (addresses given in references), shows clearly that these texts – which usually come with a classic construction, important for those telling them – preserved traces of multilingualism, different religions and dialects, as well as the information about the nationalities residing in the area. Some lexemes (or groups of lexemes) mix two or three languages. What is more, it often occurs that literary language and the standard variety (Polish) are mixed with Belorussian dialects, which stems from the historical circumstances the area studied. Such information could be preserved in zamowy because slowa or szepty (as they were called) had strictly defined structure, and had to include certain lexemes that always came in the same pre-defined order. Белорусские заговоры и другие тексты народного лечения как свидетельство взаимопроникновения языков на территории бывшего Великого княжества Литовского Статья представляет лексический материал, содержащийся в белoрусских заговорах, который касается названий праздников, молитв, определений изображений святых и священников, а также имен святых и национальностей. Документация, почерпнутая из двух книг белoрусских заговоров, выходные данные которых содержит перечень использованной литературы, с яркостью показала, что в данных текстах (отличающихся, как правило, классической композицией, существенной для тех, кто их произносил) сохранилсь следы многоязычия, разных религий и диалектов, а также информация относительно национальности проживающих на данной территории. Некоторые лексемы (или сочетания лексем) содержат следы смешения двух или даже трех языков, или общелитературного языка (польского) с белoрусским диалектом, что – по мнению автора – вытекает из прошлого исследуемого пространства. В загово рах моглa сохраниться вся указаннaя информация, так как данные единицы (слова, шепоты, как их принято определять), помимо прочего отличались определенным построением и набором определенных лексем с их четкой последовательностью.

The Polish speech of several villages in the neighborhood of Doсishki compared with the north-eastern peripheral dialect The scientific studies on the Polish language on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania have focused mainly on specific regions and historical periods. Despite the large number of the recorded materials and their analyses, scientists were unable to establish joint research programs and perform regular investigations; they also failed to create a map of different settlements, so as to develop a holistic picture of the languages of the region. Today, it is difficult to compare the study results of dialectologists and other scholars, because there is no comprehensive analysis of the peripheral Polish dialects. The paper compares the features of the Polish dialect from the area of Docishki with Polish ethnic dialects, as well as with other eastern peripheral dialects. Some other phonetic and morphological features are characterized by the resulting substrate and linguistic contacts. The differences in the Polish dialect of Voronovo district in Belarus are also presented. The analysis of the material has yielded that the Polish speech in the neighbourhood of Doсishki is closely related to the north-eastern peripheral dialects, known as polszczyzna kresowa ‘borderland Polish’. It is mostly characterized by the same features as the Polish language of the area around Vilnius (including a part of the present-day Belarus). However, certain features of the local Polish dialect in villages near Doсishki are not attested in the neighbouring towns, but they are present in a few remote areas, such as the Kaunas region and only a complete description of a dialect will enable linguists to detect such features. Польская речь нескольких деревень в окрестностях Дотишек на фоне северо-восточного периферийного диалекта Исследования польского языка на территории былого ВКЛ проводились до сих пор нерaвномерно как во времени, так и в пространстве. Несмотря на большое количество записанных и проанализированных материалов, учёным не удалось выработать совместных программ и методoлогии исследований, не получилось также разработать сетку населённых пунктов с целью представить в итоге целостную языковую картину региона. Сегодня трудно сопоставить результаты исследований диалектологов и других специалистов в связи с нехваткой комплексных анализов периферийных польских говоров. Автором сравниваются особенности польского говора с окрестностей Дотишек с польскими этническими говорами, а также другими восточными периферийными говорами; характеризуются некоторые фонетические и морфологические черты, обусловленные субстратом, а также языковыми контактами; сделана попытка показать различия в польской речи на территории Вороновщины на Беларуси. Как показывает анализ материала, польская речь в окрестностях Дотишек тесно вплетена в контекст северо-восточного периферийного диалекта, известного как „польшчызна крэсова”. Её характеризуют в основном те же особенности, что и польский язык исторической Виленщины (включая и часть современной Беларуси). Однако определённые языковые черты местного польского говора в расположенных вблизи Дотишек деревнях не были зафиксированы в соседних ареалах, зато известны на несколько отдалённой территории, напр. в районе Каунаса, и только полная характеристика языковой системы речи позволяет такие черты выявить.

On the text structure and sources of K. Sirvydas’ book of sermons ( Punktai sakymų – Punkty Kazan ) The Jesuit priest Konstantinas Sirvydas (~1580–1631) was one of the most multitalented and creative intellectuals in Lithuania in the 17th century. Using his vast experience as a professor of Vilnius University and a preacher, he compiled two different versions of a trilingual Latin-Polish-Lithuanian dictionary (~1620 and 1631), and wrote the book of sermons Punktai sakymų (‘Points of Gospel’). The importance of this book of sermons for the Lithuanian culture is immeasurable and it is considered the first book of original sermons written in Lithuanian and the first translation from Lithuanian into another language, i.e. into Polish. This book is often deemed the first original book written in Lithuanian. Unfortunately, its textual structure and its sources have not been properly evaluated and described yet. When preparing this scientific edition of his book, it appeared that its text is mostly comprised of: (1) citations from the Holy Scriptures, and paraphrases and allusions to them; (2) citations and paraphrases or allusions to works by the Church Fathers, Saints, Roman authors, etc.; and, finally, (3) Sirvydas’ original text – his commentaries and interpretations on citations, etc. There are citations from most of the books of the Old and New Testament. In his book Sirvydas uses 150 different biblical names. He also quotes from the Church Fathers, French theologians and thinkers, and from the Saints. We mostly find exact word-byword citations from Vulgate in his sermons – not paraphrases or allusions. These citations are the first published fragments from the Holy Scriptures in Lithuanian in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. With this background information we may to hypothesize that during the first quarter of the 17th century, there might have existed an unknown translation (probably some manuscript) of the Holy Scriptures in Lithuanian. О тексте и источниках сборника проповедей Punktai sakym ų ( Punkty kaza n ) Константина Ширвида Koнстантин Ширвид (~ 1580–1631) однa из самых универсальных и интеллектуальных личностей, живших и работавших в XVII веке в Литве. K. Ширвид подготовил два издания словаря Dicionarium trium linguarum (~ 1620, 1631) и издал проповеди в виде пунктов Punktai sakym ų (PS). Значение PS для литовской культуры огромно. PS считаются первым оригинальным сборником проповедей в Литве и первой литовской книгой, переведенной на польский язык. Однако до сих пор cтoль важный для литовской культуры текст не был изучен и подробно описан. В процессе анализа текста выяснилось, что структура его довольно многогранна. Текст PS состоит из нескольких слоев: (1) цитат и аллюзий Библии; (2) цитат трудов отцов Церкви, цитат или аллюзий других авторов: римских писателей, протестантских авторов, святых; (3) авторского текста самого К. Ширвида, который часто принимает форму комментария к приведенным цитатам. Автор в тексте проповедей цитирует большинство книг Ветхого и Нового Завета. В проповеди упомянуто 150 библейских имен. К. Ширвид цитирует также отцов Церкви и французских богословов и мыслителей, святых. Цитаты из Ветхого и Нового Завета являются одним из первых фрагментов перевода на литовский язык Святого Писания в Великом княжестве Литовском.

Multilingualism in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as reflected in old antroponymsThis article analyses historical anthroponyms in the Vitebsk and Mogilyov areas of Belarus. The dialects of this area are categorised as transitional within the Balto-Slavic, West-East Slavic and Russian-Belorussian dialect continua. The materials used for the study are business texts from the 15–17th centuries as well as birth registers of the 17th and 18th centuries.The analysis has shown that in the eastern part of Belarus, the surnames of ancient knightly clans of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are related to the history of a given territory. The anthroponyms reflect the phonetic, lexical, word-formation processes that have taken place in the languages of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. What is characteristic, the anthroponyms in the analysed region often mix and impose ranks. This has been caused by the difficulties in the development of antroponyms, as well as the interference of different languages and the cultural specifics of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The culture of Polish-Lithuanian Tatars in the Vilnius region The article analyses the culture of the Tatars who came to the Vilnius region centuries ago. In 1945, most of the Tatars from the region decided to go to Poland during the process of repatriation, because they were entitled to do so as Polish citizens. First, the article provides a description of the Tatars’ Muslim religion: the Quran, the doctrine and the dogmas of Islam, mosques, imams and their religious functions, festivals, and prayers. The subsequent part analyses Tatar’s symbolic culture: science, writing, language diversity, legends and superstitions, professions; material culture: clothes, cuisine, the interiors of mosques and grave adornments; as well as their rituals and ceremonies: giving names to children, weddings, funerals, rites of brotherhood, sacrifice. All names and the terminology are given in their official and colloquial versions, as well as in the version “that is used / was used in everyday conversations”. This shows the influence of the linguistic environment, which began already in the area of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Бытовой уклад польско-литовских татар на Виленщине В статье представлены черты бытового уклада общества татар, столетия назад осевших в Виленском крае. Большая часть татарского населения этих мест, имея польское гражданство, воспользовалась правом «репатриации» в Польшу. Автор знакомит нас с основами мусульманской религии татарского населения и, в этой связи, в доступной форме напоминает основы Корана, говорит о доктрине и догматах ислама, о мечети, имаме и функциях имамов (выполняемых ими религиозных услугах), о праздниках и молитвах. В последующих подразделах описывается духовная культура – наука, письменность, языковая разнородность, легенды, суеверия, профессиональная деятельность; материальная культура – одежда, кухня, убранство мечетей, могил, а также обряды – наречение ребёнка именем, бракосочетание, похороны, побратимство, жертвоприношение. Очень важным является закрепление ономастических определений и терминов в рассматриваемой тематике, представляемых в официальной и разговорной версиях, а также в версии «так, как произносят / произносили». Это отображает влияния языковой среды, закрепившиеся в прошлом, ещё на землях Великого княжества Литовского.

Co-existence of languages in the area of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the light of the works of Jan KarłowiczThe article discusses the issues of the co-existence of languages in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the consequences of the phenomenon as documented in the works of Jan Karłowicz – the outstanding scholar of the second half of the nineteenth century, an expert and researcher of the “Lithuanian” version of Polish language. The article emphasizes the fact that the research on languages in the area of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and results of their co-existence goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century and Jan Karłowicz was the pioneer of this research. He was the first to observe the following phenomena of their co-existence: interference; bilingualism and multilingualism; prioritization of co-existing languages with the unique role of the Polish language in focusing various functions in the history of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania; the diversity of Polish with sociolinguistic classification of its provincia­lisms and their division in the view of their origin; and the dangers to the Polish language in the period of Russification. Karłowicz struggled with the lack of terminology to describe the linguistic phenomena characteristic for the area. The article focuses on the classification of provincial qualities of the “Lithuanian” Polish language executed by Karłowicz in the social and ethnolinguistic area; and on the presentation of the phenomenon of linguistic interference visible in the provincial vocabulary in The Grand Duchy of Lithuania collected in “Dictionary of Polish dialects” by Karłowicz. Сосуществование языков на территории бывшего Великого княжества Литовского в свете произведений Яна КарловичаЦель данной статьи – показать сосуществование языков на землях бывшего Великого княжества Литовского (ВКЛ) и последствий этого явления, засвидетельствованных в работах Яна Карловича, видного ученого второй половины девятнадцатого века, знатока и исследователя „литовского” польского языка. Автор статьи указывает на то, что изучение языков в Великом княжестве Литовском, последствиям их сосуществования относятся ко второй половине девятнадцатого века, а их первым исследователем был Карлович. Им впервые были отмечены такие проявления этого сосуществования, как языковая интерференция, билингвизм и многоязычие, иерархия сосуществующих языков и диалектов. Выделена особая роль польского языка, объединившего целый ряд функций в истории ВКЛ, дифференциация внутри польского языка, социолингвистическая классификация его диалектизмов и их деление по происхождению, угрозы для польского языка в период сильной русификации. Особое внимание автор статьи сосредоточил на классификации провинциальных особенностей „литовского” польского языка, осуществлённой Карловичем в социальном и этнолингвистическом плане, а также на проявлениях интерференции в провинциальной лексике, ведущей своё происхождение из Великого княжества Литовского, собранной в „Словаре польских диалектов” Карловича.

Heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Northeastern Borderlands in the light of erudite linguistics The essay contains reflections on the ways of using erudite linguistics, a young discipline created by me, in the study of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Northeastern Borderlands. Correlation of linguistic and extralinguistic conclusions (culture, history, art, gemology) permits us to look in a new way at many facts of the Polish Northeastern Borderlands that linguists had not been interested in before, such as old Polish Northeastern Borderlands museum artifacts, jewelry of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, icon of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, cult of the dead in the Polish Northeastern Borderlands, architecture of the old Vilnius, manor house in Czombrow – the prototype of Soplicowo (the village in Pan Tadeusz epic poem), descriptions of Henryk Poddebski’s daguerreotype images, Vilnius identity of Henryk Szylkin or symbolic-figurative nicknames of Vilnius. Dziedzictwo Wielkiego Ksiestwa Litewskiego i Kresow polnocno-wschodnich w świetle ustalen jezykoznawstwa erudycyjnego Szkic jest refleksją o sposobach wykorzystywania stworzonego przeze mnie, kilkunastoletniego zaledwie, jezykoznawstwa erudycyjnego w badaniach nad problematyką wielkoksiązecą i polnocnokresową. Korelacja ustalen jezykoznawczych z ustaleniami pozajezykowymi (kultura, historia, sztuka, gemmologia…) pozwolila na nowe odczytanie wielu kresowych faktow, ktore nie byly dotąd przedmiotem zainteresowania jezykoznawcow, jak np.: artefakty dawnych polnocnokresowych muzeow, wielkoksiązece precjoza, Ikona Ostrobramska, polnocnokresowy kult zmarlych, architektura dawnego Wilna, prototyp Soplicowa – dwor w Czombrowie, opisy dagerotypow Henryka Poddebskiego, wilenska tozsamośc Henryka Szylkina czy symboliczno-metaforyczne nazwy Wilna.

About the tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, “Kresy Wschodnie” and the role of Poland and Poles in the history of Belarusians and LithuaniansSeveral prominent historians and researchers of historical memory from Poland, Lithuania and Belarus have focused on some questions concerning traditions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as the role of the close neighbors in the history of Poles, Lithuanians, and Belarusians. This insight give us an idea about the main directions of historical research in these countries for which the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth is a common heritage. This also allows us to understand the level of public and political interest in this problem, and reveal important trends in the historical memory of these three countries.
