Seyahat edebiyatı Hindistan alt kıtasında edebiyatçılar arasında, onların yazılı yayınlarında ve edebi ilimlerde yüksek bir yer işgal etmektedir. Seyahatçiler elde ettikleri bilgileri ve gözlemlerini yazıya geçirerek yolculuklarını ve yaşadıkları tecrübeleri tarihi, coğrafi, siyasi, sosyal, dini, iktisadi vb. olayları tek tek anlatmışlar.Böylece okuyucu tarih ve siyer kitaplarında bulamadığı haberleri, özellikleri ve önemli belgeleri bu şeklide bulma imkânı elde etmiştir. Seyahat edebiyatı ile ilgili kaleme alınan bazı teliflerde edebi karakter baskındır ve Farsça unsurlarla doludur. Çünkü bu ülkenin dili ve kültürü Farsça olduğu için yazım faaliyetleri de bu dilde başlamıştır.Diğer bazı teliflerde, mukaddes mekânlar, Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v)’in ziyareti ve Hac farizasının edası konusundaki yazımlarda ise Arapça baskın olmuştur. Öyle ki, seyahat edebiyatı ile ilgili telif edilen eserler, Arap edebiyatı ve nesir sanatı alanlarında çeşitli faydalara, farklı gayelere ve değişik amaçlara sahip olmuşlardır.
