The Macaronesian species of the muscid genus Helina are revised. The genus is represented in the Canary Islands by 9 species, in Madeira by 7 species, and in the Azores Islands by 1 species. Four species, one divided in two subspecies, are endemic to the Canary Islands: Helina grancanariae sp. nov. (Gran Canaria), H. obscurisquama obscurisquama (Stein) (Tenerife, La Gomera), H. obscurisquama pseudonivalis (Santos Abréu) ssp. rev. (La Palma), H. rufitibialis Hennig (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma) and H. santosabreui sp. nov. (La Gomera, La Palma). The following three species are endemic to Madeira: Helina atlantica (Tiensuu), H. lundbladi Tiensuu and H. vilissima Hennig. Existing records of Helina almeriensis (Strobl) and H. quadrum (Fabricius) from the Canary Islands are considered as misidentifications. An identification key to males and females concludes the species accounts. Finally, a description is given of the previously unknown male sex of the endemic Madeiran Spilogona maderensis Michelsen.

The Diptera fauna of the Galápagos Archipelago is updated and an annotated checklist is presented. Currently 50 families, 207 genera, and a minimum of 324 species are recorded from the islands. Approximately 107 species are considered to have arrived on the Galápagos Islands through human introductions, an estimated 101 species are considered endemic, 42 species have naturally colonized the islands from mainland Americas, 21 species are either introduced or arrived naturally and 53 species remain unidentified. The following new combination is proposed: Chrysanthrax primitivus (Walker) is moved to Hemipenthes Loew as H. primitivus (Walker) comb. nov. All references to the Galápagos taxonomic literature are included, known island species distributions listed and general remarks on the biology of many species are provided.

A new genus, Chuntiania Xue, gen. nov., including two new species, namely Chuntiania scutiseta Xue, sp. nov. and Chuntiania fuchaooi Xue & Yang, sp. nov., is described from China. A key to the genera of Azeliinae of China is provided, and a morphological comparison diagram of the male cercus of Chuntiania gen. nov. and Potamia Robineau-Desvoidy is added.

The genus Drymeia Meigen, 1826 in the Caucasus Mountains is reviewed. A key is given for the six species, two of which are newly described: Drymeia fratercula sp. nov. and Drymeia sororcula sp. nov. The holotype of Aspilia glacialis Rondani, 1866 has been studied and this name is an older name for Drymeia alpicola (Rondani, 1871).

The genera and species of worldwide wormlions (Diptera: Rhagionidae) are listed, with annotated references to nomenclature, synonymies and generic combinations, type localities, primary type depositories, distribution, and citations for the most recent revisions. The most diverse genera of the family are Vermileo Macquart, Vermipardus Stuckenberg and Lampromyia Macquart, with 13 described species each. The bulk of Vermileonidae diversity, with nearly half of the valid species, remains in the Afrotropical region.

Fannia bohemica sp. nov. (Czech Republic, Slovakia) is described and illustrated. Male of F. latifrontalis Hennig, 1955 is described and illustrated for the first time. Fannia jezoensis Nishida, 1976 is first reported from West Palaearctic, Fannia morrisoni Malloch, 1913 is first recorded from Palaearctic Region. Fannia umbrosa (Stein, 1895) and F. armata (Meigen, 1826; first record based on morphologically identified specimens) are new records from Nearctic Region. Six species (Fannia fuscitibia Stein, 1920, F. latifrontalis, F. limbata (Tiensuu, 1938), F. verrallii (Meade, 1891), F. gotlandica Ringdahl, 1926 and F. spathiophora, Malloch, 1918) are recorded for the first time from Slovakia.

Stomopogon Malloch (Diptera, Muscidae) is a Neotropical genus recorded from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Peru. In this contribution, the genus is revised, and three new species are described, one from Bolivia (Murillo, La Paz), one from Brazil (Palmas, Paraná) and one from Peru (Wayqecha, Cuzco). The descriptions include color images, illustrations and ultrastructural morphology of the terminalia of the adult. We provide an identification key to the species of Stomopogon and an updated map with species’ distributions. Stomopogon acuta (Malloch, 1934) is proposed as a new junior synonym of S. inculta Stein, 1911.

A new species of Bithoracochaeta Stein, 1911 (Diptera, Muscidae), Bithoracochaeta couriae sp. nov., is described and illustrated. In addition, we present comments on all Mexican species of the genus, a brief description of hunting behavior of B. couriae sp. nov. and its possible use as a biological control agent of greenhouses pests.

Five new species of Phaonia are described from China, namely P. sunqiia Xue & Du sp. nov., P. zhangjunyui Xue & Du sp. nov., P. liujiayui Xue sp. nov., P. wangpingga Xue sp. nov. and P. tianmushanensis Xue sp. nov. The available keys to the three species-groups where the new species belong were updated.

An identification key to the seven known Iranian species of the genus Coenosia Meigen, 1826 is given, including Coenosia persica Pont & Parchami-Araghi, sp. nov. as well as the newly recorded C. humilis Meigen, 1826, C. nigridigita Rondani, 1866 and C. testacea (Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830). Photographs of the habitus and male genitalia of the studied material in addition to illustrations of the male genitalia of the new species are provided.

Despite the economic and medical importance of many species of Muscidae knowledge of species occurring in Saudi Arabia is insufficient. As part of a study on the biodiversity of Diptera of south-western Saudi Arabia a survey of the Diptera fauna of Jazan, Asir and Najran was performed from 2010 to 2015 at 22 sites. Seventy one known taxa of Muscidae were identified and recorded, 29 of which were recorded for the first time from south-western Saudi Arabia and two new species; Atherigona (Acritochaeta) afrotropicalis Deeming sp. nov. and Helina ponti Deeming sp. nov. are here described. Thus, the total number of Muscidae species that has been recorded from Saudi Arabia (including previous records of 31 species) is 102 and two subspecies. A list of all species and subspecies of Muscidae recorded from Saudi Arabia is provided. The species of Muscidae listed are predominantly of Afrotropical distribution as compared to other regions. Images of 78 taxa are presented. In addition to the results of the identifications all available literature about Muscidae of Saudi Arabia is summarized. Biological information (where known) on the species recorded in this study and the Middle East distribution are included. By developing a research collection and a checklist of species of Muscidae we hope to provide the basis for systematic studies and biogeographical and faunistic analyses, and the necessary guidelines for management of these important flies. The need for further field and laboratory work and surveillance surveys is highlighted.

The Museum für Naturkunde of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin houses one of the most important and extensive collections of Muscidae (Diptera) in Europe as it includes more than 700 species described by Paul Stein and many others described by two other European dipterists, F. H. Loew and T. Becker. The relevance of the collection is even greater due to the excellent geographic coverage of this material. In this paper, we give a morphological and taxonomic revision of the 114 types of Coenosiini deposited in this collection. Differential diagnoses, notes on the types and photographs of some of them (habitus and labels) are provided.

The Japanese species of the genus Cordilura Fallén are taxonomically revised. Three species, namely Cordilura katoi sp. nov., C. shinonagai sp. nov., and C. yezoana sp. nov. are described as new to science. The previous described Japanese species C. cuspidata Sasakawa, 1986 and C. nubecula Sasakawa, 1986 are remarked. Three species, C. albipes (Fallén, 1819), C. remmi Elberg, 1972, and C. richterae Ozerov & Krivosheina, 2015 are recorded from Japan for the first time. An identification key to the Japanese species of Cordilura is also provided.

An account is given on the three species of the muscid genus Hebecnema Schnabl occurring in the Macaronesian islands. These are Hebecnema anthracina Stein from Madeira, H. anthracinella sp. nov. from the western Canary Islands, and H. fumosa (Meigen) found in the Canary Islands, Madeira and Azores. Existing Macaronesian records of H. umbratica (Meigen) from the Azores and H. vespertina (Fallén) from the Canary Islands are based on misidentifications. Diagnoses of the European species with photos of the male terminalia and a key to species are given. It is pointed out that the two species of Muscidae recently described as new from Sweden, Mydaea forsslundi Zielke, 2017 and Hebecnema brodina Zielke, 2018, represent exotic species, probably of Oriental provenance. Finally, morphological differences in the female ovipositor divide the seven European species of Hebecnema in two species groups.

The Diptera genus-group names of Johann Wilhelm Meigen are reviewed, revised, and annotated. A total of 266 available genus-group names in 69 families of Diptera are listed alphabetically, including authorship, year and page of the original publication, originally included species, type species and method of fixation, current status of the name, family placement, and any emendations that have been found in the literature. Unavailable names suppressed by ICZN rulings as well as incorrect original and subsequent spellings are included as unnumbered entries. Remarks are given to clarify nomenclatural or taxonomic information. In addition, an index to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by Meigen (3,117 in total, of which 2,966 are available) is given with a bibliographic reference to each original citation. An appendix gives a complete bibliography of all the known published writings by Meigen, non-zoological as well as zoological. The new genus, Sumapazomyia gen. nov., is proposed for a new species, S. inusitata sp. nov., from the National Natural Park Sumapaz, Bogota, Colombia. The unique morphology of the head and mouthparts, in combination with characters from the male and female terminalia, demonstrate that this new species represents a new and remarkable genus within the muscid tribe Coenosiini.

The genus Fannia Robineau-Desvoidy is a group of calyptrate Diptera distributed in all biogeographic regions and comprises about 300 species. The present study described five new species from Colombia: Fannia aburrae sp. nov., Fannia copacabana sp. nov., Fannia isa sp. nov., Fannia pseudoconstricta sp. nov., Fannia spinosa sp. nov. Male specimens are described, and morphological characters and terminalia are illustrated. Likewise, an updated identification key for males and an updated checklist for the 37 species present in Colombia are provided. New records are presented for the country.

A report is given on the Muscidae (Diptera) collected in Armenia during recent fieldwork. Locality data, Armenian distribution and general distribution are given for each species, including references to previously published records. 181 named species are listed, of which 93 are newly recorded from Armenia, and 15 are endemic (8%). Two new species are described: Thricops iliata sp. nov. and Phaonia gayaneae sp. nov.

Sixteen species have been found in Malaise traps and fogging samples from Kéniéroba and Ouronina, SW Mali. One new species, Atherigona kenierobaensis sp. nov., is described; A. budongoana, A. laevigata, A. lineata torrida, A. mirabilis aratra, and A. nigrapicalis are newly recorded for Mali; this brings the total number of species known from the country to 30. An illustrated identification key for Malian Atherigona species is provided.

Eleven new Spilogona species: Spilogona altaica sp. nov., Spilogona antoninae sp. nov., Spilogona colorata sp. nov., Spilogona decolorata sp. nov., Spilogona improvisa sp. nov., Spilogona insolita sp. nov., Spilogona longissima sp. nov., Spilogona novgorodovana sp. nov., Spilogona platyfrons sp. nov., Spilogona tanushka sp. nov., Spilogona tara sp. nov. and a key is provided to the 53 species known from the Altai Mountains including 21 species are newly recorded for the Altai, and seven of them also represent new records from Russia: Spilogona meadei (Schnabl, 1915), Spilogona orthosurstyla Xue & Tian, 1988, Spilogona placida (Huckett, 1932), Spilogona setigera (Stein, 1907), Spilogona sororcula (Zetterstedt, 1845), Spilogona spinicosta (Stein, 1907), Spilogona stackelbergi Hennig, 1959). And four species represent new records for the Palaearctic Region: Spilogona flavinervis Huckett, 1965, Spilogona imitatrix (Malloch, 1921), Spilogona nutaka Huckett, 1965, Spilogona incerta Huckett, 1965. Three new synonymies are proposed: Spilogona impar (Stein, 1907) = Spilogona deflorata (Holmgren, 1872), Spilogona churchillensis Huckett, 1965 = Spilogona quinquesetosa (Schnabl, 1915), and Spilogona robusta Huckett, 1965 = Spilogona sordidipennis (Holmgren, 1883). The pictures of the new species are given and the male terminalia are figured. New faunistic data are given for some previously described species of Altai Spilogona .

Sixty years ago, Willi Hennig last catalogued the Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae fauna of the Juan Fernández Archipelago. This archipelago, composed of three main volcanic islands (Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara), has many endemic species. We describe Fannia hennigi sp. n. from the Robinson Crusoe Island, and record 11 species in 10 genera of Anthomyiidae, Fanniidae and Muscidae. A key to the identification of all species found in Juan Fernández Archipelago and a table with all species found in the Archipelago are presented, including four new records from Robinson Crusoe Island: Delia platura (Meigen, 1826); Fannia hennigi sp. n.; Lispoides insularis Hennig, 1957 and Schoenomyzina emdeni Hennig, 1955.

The morphology of the male terminalia of fourteen African species of Helina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera, Muscidae) is described and illustrated: H. dorsalis (Stein, 1914); H. emdeni Pont, 1980, H. fuscibasis Emden, 1951; H. gracilior Emden, 1951; H. hirtipes metatarsalis Emden, 1951, H. juxtamedialis Emden, 1951; H. lasiopa Emden, 1951; H. mollis (Stein, 1906); H. naivashensis Emden, 1951, stat. nov. (herein raised to species rank); H. nemoralis (Stein, 1913); H. novarae (Schiner, 1868), H. penicillata Emden, 1951; H. quadruplex (Stein, 1913); and H. trinubilifera (Malloch, 1921). These species demonstrate that the terminalia can be very varied, with different shapes of sternite 5, sometimes with very strong and long setae, and a short or elongated cercal plate and surstylus that sometimes can bear spines. Some of these species also share other external characters that are unusual among Helina, such as the arrangement of the katepisternal setae as an equilateral triangle, the absence of an anterodorsal seta on mid tibia, and wings with dark clouds. Most of these species are well described in the literature, but the male terminalia have never been studied in detail. The material studied here is deposited in the Natural History Museum (BMNH), London, United Kingdom.

The mainly Oriental Bengalia torosa Wiedemann species-group is revised on the basis of males. Species concepts are based on male terminalia. Monophyly of the species-group is established on the basis of two unique synapomorphies of the distiphallus. Eleven species are recognized as valid, viz. Bengalia chekiangensis Fan, 1965, Bengalia chiangmaiensis Kurahashi & Tumrasvin, 1979, Bengalia concava Malloch, 1927, Bengalia escheri Bezzi, 1913, Bengalia fuscipennis Bezzi, 1913, Bengalia jejuna (Fabricius, 1787), Bengalia kanoi Kurahashi & Magpayo, 2000, Bengalia martinleakei Senior-White, 1930, Bengalia recurva Malloch, 1927, Bengalia torosa (Wiedemann, 1819), Bengalia xanthopyga Senior-White, 1924, and their geographical distributions are updated. The following new synonymies are proposed: Bezzigalia rivanella Lehrer, 2005 is a junior synonym of B. escheri , syn. nov.; Bengalia siamensis Senior-White, 1924, Gangelomyia kosungana Lehrer, 2007 and G. laoziella Lehrer, 2007 are junior synonyms of B. fuscipennis , syn. nov.; Gangelomyia evafoneae Lehrer, 2005 and G. senausmarta Lehrer, 2005 are junior synonyms of B. jejuna , syn. nov.; Gangelomyia indipyga Lehrer, 2005, G. philipyga Lehrer, 2005, G. schiavoae Lehrer, 2005, G. shivanella Lehrer, 2005, G. tagaloga Lehrer, 2005 and G. phantastika Lehrer, 2007 are junior synonyms of B. kanoi , syn. nov.; Gangelomyia gandhiana Lehrer, 2005 and G. krishna Lehrer, 2005 are junior synonyms of B. martinleakei , syn. nov.; Laoziana camerina Lehrer, 2005, L. mandarina Lehrer, 2005 and L. singhasaria Lehrer, 2005 are junior synonyms of B. recurva , syn. nov. Lectotypes are designated for Musca favillacea Walker, 1859 and Bengalia escheri Bezzi, 1913. A male syntype of Musca torosa Wiedemann, 1819 has been located in NHMD and a female syntype of the same nominal species has been located in NMW. A male specimen in NHMD is proposed as neotype for Musca jejuna Fabricius, 1787, to replace the three existing female syntypes. A male specimen in NHMD is proposed as neotype for Musca torosa Wiedemann, 1819, to replace the newly located syntypes. The ICZN Commission will be requested, in a forthcoming paper, to formally set aside the existing name-bearing types of both nominal species and designate the proposed specimens as neotypes, in order to preserve the current usage of both names. Musca favillacea Walker, 1859 is removed from synonymy with Bengalia jejuna and treated as an unplaced name in the Bengalia torosa species-group. Bengalia robertsi Kurahashi, 1987 is removed from the Bengalia torosa species-group and re-assigned to the Bengalia labialis Robineau-Desvoidy species-group. Bengalia subnitida James, 1964 is assigned to the Bengalia peuhi Villeneuve species-group even though it lacks discal setae on the fifth abdominal tergite. Two new terms are introduced for description of the distiphallus of the B. torosa species-group. Bengalia recurva Malloch is reported for the first time from China.

A new monotypic genus, Tapantiomyia gen. nov., is proposed for a new species of muscid fly, T. enigmatica sp. nov., found in the Tapantí National Park, Costa Rica. It is only known by a single male specimen taken in a Malaise trap in tropical cloud forest, but deserves immediate attention because of its bizarre, stilt-legged appearance in combination with several other unique apomorphies that preclude placement in any known genus of Muscidae. Tapantiomyia enigmatica is so strange that it tend to run out to Scathophagidae rather than Muscidae in keys to families of Diptera. However, the morphology of the male genitalia provides decisive evidence for a placement in Coenosiinae, a large and diverse group of predatory Muscidae. Two tribes, Limnophorini and Coenosiini, are currently recognized within Coenosiinae, but the monophyly of Limnophorini remains uncertain. Tapantiomyia is tentatively assigned to the Limnophorini.

Macrochelid mites have been reported in several papers about mites of different habitats in Brazil, but this is the first work specifically conducted to determine the macrochelids from that country. The main goal was to determine macrochelid species in microhabitats where the stable fly is usually found in commercial cattle farms. In total, 1359 specimens were collected from cow manure and litter in different regions of São Paulo state. These represented ten species of three genera. One of these, Macrocheles embersoni n. sp. is here described as new to science. Other macrochelid species are expected to be found in the study area, when other types of microhabitats are explored.

All the Afrotopical Limnophora Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera, Muscidae) deposited in the Natural History Museum, London (United Kingdom) were analyzed, including the types of the species described by Emden, mainly from the British Museum (Natural History) Ruwenzori Expedition of 1934–1935. Diagnoses and notes on all the species recorded from the Afrotropical region are given, together with illustrations of the male terminalia (when sufficient material was available), some of which are given for the first time. We made the following taxonomic changes: Limnophora terrestris Paterson, 1955 is a junior synonym of Limnophora translucida Stein, 1913 (syn. nov.); Limnophora aculeipes latilamellata Malloch, 1921 has its status revised and is elevated to species rank (stat. rev.) with Limnophora aculeipes eurymetopa Emden, 1951 proposed as a junior synonym (syn. nov.); L. majuscula kinangopana Emden, 1951 is also raised to species rank (stat. nov.). Four new species are described: Limnophora alta sp. nov.; Limnophora nuda sp. nov . ; Limnophora numerosa sp. nov . and Limnophora sinuosa sp. nov., with illustrations of male terminalia.

The subgenera Morellia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and Parapyrellia Townsend, 1915 of Morellia (Diptera, Muscidae) are revised. Forty-two species of the subgenus Morellia (out of 50) and seven of the subgenus Parapyrellia (all species) are redescribed and illustrated, and 48 species are keyed (41 spp. of Morellia and 7 spp. of Parapyrellia). Morellia (M.) cashmirana van Emden, 1965, originally described as a subspecies of M. (M.) hortorum (Fallen, 1817), is raised to species rank, stat. nov. Four species are transferred from the subgenus Morellia to the subgenus Parapyrellia (subgen. comb. nov.): M. dendropanacis Pamplona & Couri, 1995; M. lopesae Pamplona, 1986; M. roppai Pamplona, 1986 and M. semimarginata (Stein, 1918).

Helina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is the second genus of Muscidae in terms of richness. This genus includes several species collected at high altitudes and high latitudes, and is poorly studied in the Neotropical region. Only 12 species of Helina have been recorded in the southern limit of South America in the Andean-Patagonian forests. In the present work, we studied all the species known from the Andean-Patagonian forests, with the exception of H. viola Malloch, 1934, presentthree new species, H. araucana sp. nov., H. dorada sp. nov., and H. ouina sp. nov., and provide the first description of the females of H. australis Carvalho & Pont, 1993 and H. rufoapicata Malloch, 1934. We also propose four new synonymies: H. nigrimana basilaris (Carvalho & Pont, 1993) and H. nigrimana grisea (Malloch, 1934) as new junior synonyms of H. nigrimana (Macquart, 1851); and H. fulvocalyptrata Malloch, 1934 and H. simplex Malloch, 1934 as new junior synonyms of H. chilensis Malloch, 1934. Finally, we provide a generic diagnosis and a new key for the Helina species of the Andean-Patagonian forests, as well as notes on the biology and distribution maps of each specimen, and discuss a preliminary contruction of groups of species. Japanese species of the genus Cephalispa Malloch, 1935 are revised. Cephalispa kudoi sp. nov., C. okinawaensis sp. nov. and C. triquetra sp. nov. are described. Lispocephala xanthogaster (Shinonaga, 2003) is transferred to the genus. A key to Japanese species is provided.

Here we catalogue 32 species in two genera of Fanniidae (Euryomma and Fannia) from Colombia and provide geographical information for all species, when available.

The Muscidae species in Colombia are first catalogued. 108 species and 41 genera are reported to the country, added with 14 new species not yet described in Agenamyia, Apsil, Drymeia, Graphomya and Reinwardtia genera. There are 15 new species records to Colombia. References are given to the original descriptions and taxonomic, biological, and applied literature made for Colombia.

Ongoing fieldwork and molecular research continues to reveal that the monsoonal tropics of northern Australia contain more vertebrate species than currently recognised. Here we focus on two morphologically distinctive, yet unrecognised forms in the genus Gehyra from the southern Kimberley region and surrounding deserts. We base our descriptions on a combination of unpublished genetic data and a morphological examination of voucher specimens. We recognise and redescribe G. kimberleyi, a species with a broad distribution extending over most of the south-west Kimberley, across the Great Sandy Desert and into the far northern Pilbara. This species has been previously assigned to G. pilbara owing to its frequent occurrence on termite mounds and short snout, but can be distinguished from G. pilbara and other regionally sympatric Gehyra by its moderate body size, moderate number of pre-cloacal pores in males (12-17) and aspects of dorsal colouration. We also describe G. girloorloo sp. nov., a small rock-dwelling species with a short snout, low number of pre-cloacal pores in males (8-11) and pinkish-grey dorsal colouration with alternating series of indistinct pale spots and irregular transversely-aligned dark blotches. The new species appears to be restricted to a relatively small region of exposed limestone karst in the south-west Kimberley and is entirely circumscribed by morphologically similar congeners.

The study of unidentified material from Angola (Africa), deposited in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom, has revealed three new Coenosia species: Coenosia lucens sp. nov., Coenosia flavohumeralis sp. nov. and Coenosia setosa sp. nov., and five new records: Coenosia macrochaeta (Emden, 1940), Coenosia nodosa Stein, 1913, Coenosia ochroprocta (Speiser, 1910), Coenosia planifrons Stein, 1913 and Coenosia translucida (Emden, 1940). Only one species of Coenosia had previously been recorded from Angola: Coenosia sanguenguei Zielke 1971. The new species are described with illustrations of the male terminalia, and diagnoses of the newly-recorded species with descriptions of the male terminalia are given. A list of all Muscidae species recorded from Angola is presented.

A revision of the Amazonian species of Syneches Walker resulted in the re-description of four species and the description of nine new species: Syneches amazonicus sp. nov., S. angulatus sp. nov., S. applanatus sp. nov., S. bilobatus sp. nov., S. equatoriensis sp. nov., S. exilis sp. nov., S. maculosum sp. nov., S. striatus sp. nov., S. tenebricus sp. nov., and two new synonymies: S. quadricinctus (Fabricius, 1805) = S. curvipes (Fabricius, 1805) and S. hispidus Ale-RochaVieira, 2008 = S. repletus Bezzi, 1909. The male of S. fuscescens Bezzi and the female of S. annulipes Bezzi are described and their terminalia are illustrated. Geographic records for S. annulipes Bezzi, S. curvipes (Fabricius), S. fuscescens Bezzi, S. manaos Smith, S. moraballi Smith, S. rafaeli Ale-RochaVieira, S. repletus Bezzi and S. walkeri Smith and an identification key for the species recorded in the Amazon are provided.

The study of Afrotropical Muscidae deposited in the Natural History Museum (BMNH), London, United Kingdom, revealed four new species of Helina Robineau-Desvoidy, herein described and illustrated. Helina duocolorata sp. nov. is described from Kenya, Helina longicerca sp. nov. and Helina sexnotata sp. nov. from Nigeria, and Helina mediomaculata sp. nov. from Angola. All types are deposited in the collection of the BMNH. Some corrections are made to the entries under Helina in the Catalogue of the Diptera of the Afrotropical Region (Pont 1980).

Species of Lispe caesia-group from Palaearctic and adjacent regions are reviewed. Diagnostic characters of this group are updated. One new synonymy is established: L. frontalis Zielke, 1972, syn. nov. for L. leucocephala Loew, 1856. Key to males of ten species (with two subspecies) from Palaearctic, Oriental and Ethiopian regions is given. Nine species (with two subspecies) are photographed. Six species and one subspecies are redescribed. More detailed ultrastructural or external characters for male swollen hind tarsi and the wing interference patterns are also provided.
