Fibrocystic disease (F.D.) can be observed in many women between 25 and 50 years. The typical histologic alterations in F.D. are often accompanied by estrogen dominance and relative hyperprolactinemia. For treatment local methods, diet, progesterones, danazol and the punction of large cyst are recommended.

The authors of this paper interviewed 200 pregnant women and another 200 patients on their own maternity ward to find out about their views and wishes regarding pain reducing procedures during delivery, with or without reduced consciousness in the course of labour. Only 13 per cent of them wanted to sleep during delivery, while almost 90 per cent insisted on being kept fully alert and on playing an active role in childbirth.--Yet, there has been growing demand for analgetic treatment among maternity ward patients, which, obviously, has been attributable to birth trauma. For example, the percentage of women who asked for peridural anaesthesia grew from 36 ante-partum to 64 post-partum.--The replies given by the patients then were related by the authors to the results of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TNS) and cerebral electric stimulation (CES). Both methods had good effects on more than 50 per cent of the cases and partial effects on 25 to 30 per cent.--The authors feel that those no-risk simple methods should give good results in most cases in terms of less labour pain with full consciousness. Other methods, with higher risk, might be reserved for patients on whom simple methods fail.

Between 1970 and 1976 a total of 8254 gravidae were screened by smears of the cervix for carcinoma. The results regarded to doubtful (classification III) and positive (classification IV) smears were compaired with the frequency in not-pregnant women. In pregnant women doubtful or positive smears were found in 5.2%, in not-pregnant women in 12.0%. In the reported period a decrease of these smears were to observed: from 7.5% to 3.0%. The mean age of gravidae with doubtful smears is about 6 years beyond the mean age of gravidae with positive smears. Doubtful smears (classification III) in pregnant women are of less value but of same importance than in not-pregnant women; positive smears are of the same value and importance. Altogether there were 5 preinvasive and 5 invasive carcinomas of the cervix and 1 carcinoma of the vagina. The classification and consequences of carcinoma screening during gestation were discussed.

In this case the unusual combination of an enlarged twisted ovarian cyst, a parovarian cyst, ascites and gall-bladder hydrops is being reported. Literature references regarding the clinical relevance of this problems are given.

Methods of electric stimulation have been tested for their effect on labour pain during delivery. Beside the central (cerebral) electric stimulation electro-acupuncture and transcutaneous electric stimulation have been used. Because of the only moderate results and the difficulties in clinical handling electro-acupuncture is not very usefull for pain reduction during child birth. Central stimulation and transcutaneous stimulation brought relief of pain in about 60% of the 209 patients treated with these methods in addition to a significant reduction of the labour period. No side effects on mother or child were observed.

A case of Neurofibromatosis Recklinghausen with Sarcoma uteri is reported. After 23 years absence of recidivity a plum-sized, hard tumor was diagnosed in the left inguinal region. Primarily this tumor was thought to be a late relapse of sarcoma uteri, but in fact it was a neurofibrosarcoma. The connections between sarcoma uteri and neurofibrosarcoma is discussed, because a new histological examination could detect neurofibromal cells in the uterine tumor.

Of 210 women with galactorrhea 66.2% had normal prolactin serum levels. Only in 33.4% elevated prolactin levels could be found, 0.4% were hypoprolactinemic. The TRH-stimulation test detected latent hyperprolactinemia in 13.5% of the cases, showed a normal thyroid function in 81.5%, hypothyroidism in 13.9% and hyperthyroidism in 4.6% and this is considered to be a more valuable diagnostic tool than the MCP-test. Galactorrhea was associated with the following conditions: hyperprolactinemia (34.8%), menstrual disturbances (67.4%), post-pill amenorrhea (30.2%), mastalgia (30.2%), prolactinoma (18.6%), fibrocystic disease (11.6%), hirsutism (4.6%), diabetes mellitus (2.3%).

Two cases of melanomas with the one site of localisation of metastases in the breast are presented. The conclusion is to perform a two step operative therapy of breast tumor for patients with a history of melanoma to avoid unnecessary mutilating operations.

In this publication about the conservative therapy of mastopathy is referred. The expression "mastopathy" should be replaced by a histopathological classification. The etiology of this disease is discussed. At the moment hormonal treatment and treatment without hormones is used. The therapy of this disease isn't very important because of the high incidence. A preliminary report about a randomized study for conservative treatment of mastopathy is given, which could influence the therapeutic procedure of conservative treatment even now.

A report is given about 75 genital sarcomas treated at the 1 st university clinic of obstetrics and gynaecology in vienna during the period 1960--1972. This number consists of 60 sarcomas of the corpus uteri, 3 cervical sarcomas, 8 ovarian sarcomas and 4 sarcomas of the vagina. Their therapy and prognosis is discussed. The importance of radical operative therapy with postoperative radio therapeutic treatment is emphasized and the necessity of a central documentation and a uniform classification of clinical and histological stages is pointed out.
