The article provides information on several of the kettle ponds in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Kettle ponds are formed when retreating glaciers left huge blocks of heavy ice embedded in the out wash. When the ice melted, deep depressions dotted the landscape, groundwater rose to meet the craters. Kettle pond waters run clear. Most heat up to 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the Cape's bracing Atlantic surf. Kettle ponds in the area include Wakeby and Mashpee Ponds, Punch Bowl, Hathaways Pond and Scargo Lake.
