The power split plug-in hybrid electric bus (PHEB) boasts the capability for concurrent decoupling of rotation speed and torque, emerging as the key technology for energy conservation. The optimization of energy management strategies (EMSs) and powertrain parameters for PHEB contributes to bolstering vehicle performance and fuel economy. This paper revolves around optimizing fuel economy in PHEBs by proposing an optimization algorithm for the combination of a multi-layer rule-based energy management strategy (MRB-EMS) and powertrain parameters, with the former incorporating intelligent algorithms alongside deterministic rules. It commences by establishing a double-planetary-gear power split model for PHEBs, followed by parameter matching for powertrain components in adherence to relevant standards. Moving on, this paper plunges into the operational modes of the PHEB and assesses the system efficiency under each mode. The MRB-EMS is devised, with the battery's State of Charge (SOC) serving as the hard constraint in the outer layer and the Charge Depletion and Charge Sustaining (CDCS) strategy forming the inner layer. To address the issue of suboptimal adaptive performance within the inner layer, an enhancement is introduced through the integration of optimization algorithms, culminating in the formulation of the enhanced MRB (MRB-II)-EMS. The fuel consumption of MRB-II-EMS and CDCS, under China City Bus Circle (CCBC) and synthetic driving cycle, decreased by 12.02% and 10.35% respectively, and the battery life loss decreased by 33.33% and 31.64%, with significant effects. Subsequent to this, a combined multi-layer powertrain optimization method based on Genetic Algorithm-Optimal Adaptive Control of Motor Efficiency-Particle Swarm Optimization (GOP) is proposed. In parallel with solving the optimal powertrain parameters, this method allows for the synchronous optimization of the Electric Driving (ED) mode and the Shutdown Charge Hold (SCH) mode within the MRB strategy. As evidenced by the results, the proposed optimization method is tailored for the EMSs and powertrain parameters. After optimization, fuel consumption was reduced by 9.04% and 18.11%, and battery life loss was decreased by 3.19% and 7.42% under the CCBC and synthetic driving cycle, which demonstrates a substantial elevation in the fuel economy and battery protection capabilities of PHEB. The energy management system of a fuel cell electric robot should be highly responsive to provide the required power for various tactical operations, navigation of different routes, and acceleration. This paper presents a new multi-level online energy management strategy for a fuel cell electric robot based on the proposed functions of equivalent hydrogen fuel value evaluation, classification of the battery state of charge via the squared combined efficiency function, identification of the robot maneuver condition based on the proposed operation state of robot function, improvement of the overall energy efficiency based on the proposed function of the battery overcharge control, and separation of the functional points of the fuel cell based on the operational mode control strategy. The simulation study of the proposed online multi-level energy management strategy was carried out with MATLAB R2018b software to verify its superiority by comparing with other strategies. The results indicate a reduction in hydrogen consumption, reduction in fuel cell power fluctuations, prevention of battery overcharging, and incrementation in the total energy efficiency of energy storage systems compared to other energy management strategies. Existing EMS often neglects engine operating conditions, leading to frequent start–stop events, which affect fuel economy and engine lifespan. This paper proposes an Integrated Engine Start–Stop Dynamic Programming (IESS-DP) energy management strategy, aiming to optimize energy consumption. An enhanced rule-based strategy is designed for the engine's operating conditions, significantly reducing fuel consumption during idling through engine start–stop control. Furthermore, the IESS-DP energy management strategy is designed. This strategy comprehensively considers engine start–stop control states and introduces weighting coefficients to balance fuel consumption and engine start–stop costs. Precise control of energy flow is achieved through a global optimization framework to improve fuel economy. Simulation results show that under the World Light Vehicle Test Cycle (WLTC), the IESS-DP EMS achieves a fuel consumption of 3.36 L/100 km. This represents a reduction of 6.15% compared to the traditional DP strategy and 5.35% compared to the deep reinforcement learning-based EMS combined with engine start–stop (DDRL/SS) strategy. Energy storage systems play a crucial role in the overall performance of hybrid electric vehicles. Therefore, the state of the art in energy storage systems for hybrid electric vehicles is discussed in this paper along with appropriate background information for facilitating future research in this domain. Specifically, we compare key parameters such as cost, power density, energy density, cycle life, and response time for various energy storage systems. For energy storage systems employing ultra capacitors, we present characteristics such as cell voltage, cycle life, power density, and energy density. Furthermore, we discuss and evaluate the interconnection topologies for existing energy storage systems. We also discuss the hybrid battery–flywheel energy storage system as well as the mathematical modeling of the battery–ultracapacitor energy storage system. In response to the issues of hybrid tractors' energy management strategies, such as reliance on experience, difficulty in achieving optimal control, and incomplete analysis of typical operating conditions of tractors, an energy management strategy based on dynamic programming is proposed in combination with various typical operating conditions of tractors. This is aimed at providing a reference for the modeling and energy management strategies of series hybrid tractors. Taking the series hybrid tractor as the research object, the tractor dynamics models under three typical working conditions of plowing, rotary tillage, and transportation were established. With the minimum total fuel consumption of the tractor as the optimization target, the engine power as the control variable, and the state of charge of the power battery as the state variable, an energy management strategy based on a dynamic programming algorithm was established and simulation experiments were conducted. The simulation results show that, compared with the power-following energy management strategy, the energy management strategy based on the dynamic programming algorithm can reasonably control the operating state of the engine. Under the three typical working conditions of plowing, rotary tillage, and transportation, the battery SOC consumption increased by approximately 8.37%, 7.24%, and 0.77%, respectively, while the total fuel consumption decreased by approximately 25.28%, 21.54%, and 13.24%, respectively. Energy management strategies for hydrogen fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) are a key factor in achieving real-time vehicle energy optimization control, vehicle driving economy, and fuel cell durability. In this paper, for an FCHEV equipped with a fuel cell and supercapacitor, the quantitative information, logic rules, and operational constraints are transformed into linear integer inequalities according to its different operating modes, and the Hysdel language is used to establish its mixed logic dynamic model (MLD). Then, the energy management strategy based on model predictive control (MPC) is developed using the MLD model as the prediction model and the equivalent hydrogen consumption and the performance degradation of the fuel cell as the optimization performance indexes. Finally, under the World Light Vehicle Test Cycle, a joint simulation was carried out with Advisor and Simulink to verify the proposed strategy's superiority by comparing it with the power following control strategy (PFCS) and the compound fuzzy control strategy (CFCS). The results show that the strategy not only ensures real-time FCHEV energy control, but also reduces hydrogen consumption by 10.98% and 1.98% and the number of start/stop times of a fuel cell by six and four, compared to PFCS and CFCS, respectively, which improves the economy of the whole vehicle as well as the durability of the fuel cell. Given the influence of the randomness of driving conditions on the energy management strategy of vehicles, deep reinforcement learning considering driving conditions prediction was proposed. A working condition prediction model based on the BP neural network was established, and the correction coefficient of vehicle demand torque was determined according to the working condition prediction results. An energy management strategy and deep reinforcement learning were integrated to build an energy management strategy with deep reinforcement learning based on driving condition prediction. Simulation experiments were conducted according to the actual collected working condition data. The experimental results show that the energy management strategy, i.e., deep reinforcement learning considering working condition prediction, has faster convergence speed and more vital self-learning ability, and the equivalent fuel consumption per 100 km under different driving conditions is 6.411 L/100 km, 6.327 L/100 km, and 6.388 L/100 km, respectively. Compared with the unimproved strategy, the fuel economy can be improved by 3.18%, 3.08%, and 2.83%. The power coupling equation and energy consumption model for enhancing the fuel economy and power performance of plug-in hybrid electric trucks (PHETs) are proposed based on the economic velocity planning strategy (EVPS-DSIDP), which takes into account the driving style and an improved dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm. This strategy employs a fuzzy controller to identify the driving style, and optimizes the efficiency and accuracy of the conventional dynamic programming (DP) algorithm by associating decision variables, dynamically adjusting the discretization step size, and restricting the state space. Additionally, a penalty function is introduced to enhance the robustness of the DP algorithm. Under our EVPS-DSIDP, the variation of velocity is liberated from the constraints of fixed driving conditions, and directly correlates with road information and driving styles, which is of significant importance for addressing energy management issues in real-time traffic conditions. Moreover, the proposed IDP algorithm can improve computational efficiency while ensuring calculation accuracy, thereby greatly enhancing the potential for the practical application of this algorithm in real-world vehicle scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that compared to the rule-based control strategy, the application of the proposed EVPS-DSIDP in the economy velocity planning strategy can achieve an average reduction of 2.88% in economic costs and 10.6% in travel time across different driving styles. The hybrid electric dump truck is equipped with multiple power sources, and each powertrain component is controlled by an energy management strategy (EMS) to split the demanded power. This study proposes an EMS based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to extend the battery life and reduced total usage cost for the vehicle, namely the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) based EMS. Firstly, the vehicle model is constructed and the optimization objective function, including battery aging cost and fuel consumption cost, is designed. Secondly, the TD3-based EMS is used for continuous action control of ICE power based on vehicle state, and the action mask is applied to filter out invalid actions. Thirdly, the simulations of the EMSs are trained under the CHTC-D driving cycle and C-WTVC driving cycle. The results show that the action mask improves the convergence efficiency of the strategies, and the proposed TD3-based EMS outperforms the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based EMS. Meanwhile, the battery life is extended by 36.17% under CHTC-D and 35.49% under C-WTVC, and the total usage cost is reduced by 4.30% and 2.49% when the EMS considers battery aging. In summary, the proposed TD3-based EMS can extend the battery life and reduce usage cost, and provides a method to solve the optimization problem for the EMS of hybrid power systems. Due to the continuous high traction power impact on the energy storage medium, it is easy to cause many safety risks during the driving process, such as triggering the aging mechanism, causing rapid deterioration of the battery performance during the driving process and even triggering thermal runaway. Hybrid energy storage is an effective way to solve this problem. The ultracapacitor is an energy storage device that has high power density, which can withstand high instantaneous currents and can be charged and discharged quickly. By combining batteries and ultracapacitors in a hybrid energy storage system, energy sources with different characteristics can be combined to take advantage of their respective strengths and increase the efficiency and lifetime of the system. The energy management strategy plays an important role in the performance of hybrid energy storage systems. Traditional optimization algorithms have difficulty improving the flexibility and practicality of applications. In this paper, an energy management strategy based on reinforcement learning is proposed. The results indicate that the proposed reinforcement method can effectively distribute the charging and discharging conditions of the power supply and maintain the SOC of the battery and, at the same time, meet the power demand of working conditions at the cost of less energy loss and effectively realize the goal of optimizing the overall efficiency and effective energy management strategy. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are equipped with more than one power source, providing additional degrees of freedom to meet the driver's power demand. Therefore, the reasonable allocation of the power demand of each power source by the energy management strategy (EMS) to keep each power source operating in the efficiency zone is essential for improving fuel economy. This paper proposes a novel model-free EMS based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm with automatic entropy tuning to balance the optimization of energy efficiency with the adaptability of driving cycles. The maximum entropy framework is introduced into deep reinforcement learning-based energy management to improve the performance of exploring the internal combustion engine (ICE) as well as the electric motor (EM) efficiency interval. Specifically, the automatic entropy adjustment framework improves the adaptability to driving cycles. In addition, the simulation is verified by the data collected from the real vehicle. The results show that the introduction of automatic entropy adjustment can effectively improve vehicle equivalent fuel economy. Compared with traditional EMS, the proposed EMS can save energy by 4.37%. Moreover, it is able to adapt to different driving cycles and can keep the state of charge to the reference value. In recent years, due to the shortage of environmental energy and other problems, seeking clean energy as the power source of vehicles to replace traditional fossil energy could be one of the measures to reduce environmental pollution. Among them, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) have been widely studied by researchers for their advantages of high energy efficiency, environmental protection, and long driving range. This paper first introduces the topology of common FCHEVs and then classifies and introduces the latest energy management strategies (EMSs) for FCHEVs. In the development of actual vehicles, manufacturers usually adopt a simplified control strategy to ensure the reliability of the control strategy based on the application scenarios. There are two main working modes for the fuel cell system in fuel cell electric vehicles in China. One is the stepped power type, and the other is the following power type. Therefore, the analysis and comparison of these two typical working modes in the power test of fuel cell electric vehicles helps determine how the fuel cell system works in the actual vehicle and how to choose energy management strategies in different application scenarios. We do the actual tests to explore how the two typical control strategies perform in actual vehicles. These two typical control strategies show different characteristics in the same test. It shows that the energy management strategies should be adopted according to the application scenarios and optimization goals. In the stepped power control strategy, the fluctuation of the fuel cell system and the frequency of starting and stopping are significantly reduced, which is beneficial to the durability of the fuel cell system. Compared with the stepped control strategy, the fluctuation of the output power of fuel cell electric vehicles with the following power control strategy increased significantly. At the same time, a simplified state of charge (SOC) test method is proposed. Due to the particularity of the stepped power control strategy, the change of capacity can be used to replace the change of SOC. Due to the continuous high traction power impact on the energy storage medium, it is easy to cause many safety risks during the driving process, such as triggering the aging mechanism, causing rapid deterioration of the battery performance during the driving process and even triggering thermal runaway. Hybrid energy storage is an effective way to solve this problem. The ultracapacitor is an energy storage device that has high power density, which can withstand high instantaneous currents and can be charged and discharged quickly. By combining batteries and ultracapacitors in a hybrid energy storage system, energy sources with different characteristics can be combined to take advantage of their respective strengths and increase the efficiency and lifetime of the system. The energy management strategy plays an important role in the performance of hybrid energy storage systems. Traditional optimization algorithms have difficulty improving the flexibility and practicality of applications. In this paper, an energy management strategy based on reinforcement learning is proposed. The results indicate that the proposed reinforcement method can effectively distribute the charging and discharging conditions of the power supply and maintain the SOC of the battery and, at the same time, meet the power demand of working conditions at the cost of less energy loss and effectively realize the goal of optimizing the overall efficiency and effective energy management strategy.

Key subsystems, such as driving resistance, component performance, and energy management strategy, determine the power performance and energy consumption of hybrid electric vehicles. Qin Plus performs excellently in fuel consumption due to its low driving resistance, high thermal efficiency of the engine, and multi-factor multi-mode energy management strategy. This article aims to explain the outstanding energy consumption of DMi vehicles by analyzing the driving resistance, component parameters of Qin Plus and introducing the drive modes selection and vehicle energy management strategy through multi-system modeling and simulation. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are equipped with more than one power source, providing additional degrees of freedom to meet the driver’s power demand. Therefore, the reasonable allocation of the power demand of each power source by the energy management strategy (EMS) to keep each power source operating in the efficiency zone is essential for improving fuel economy. This paper proposes a novel model-free EMS based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm with automatic entropy tuning to balance the optimization of energy efficiency with the adaptability of driving cycles. The maximum entropy framework is introduced into deep reinforcement learning-based energy management to improve the performance of exploring the internal combustion engine (ICE) as well as the electric motor (EM) efficiency interval. Specifically, the automatic entropy adjustment framework improves the adaptability to driving cycles. In addition, the simulation is verified by the data collected from the real vehicle. The results show that the introduction of automatic entropy adjustment can effectively improve vehicle equivalent fuel economy. Compared with traditional EMS, the proposed EMS can save energy by 4.37%. Moreover, it is able to adapt to different driving cycles and can keep the state of charge to the reference value.

With the development of the global economy, the automobile industry is also developing constantly. In recent years, due to the shortage of environmental energy and other problems, seeking clean energy as the power source of vehicles to replace traditional fossil energy could be one of the measures to reduce environmental pollution. Among them, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEVs) have been widely studied by researchers for their advantages of high energy efficiency, environmental protection, and long driving range. This paper first introduces the topology of common FCHEVs and then classifies and introduces the latest energy management strategies (EMSs) for FCHEVs. Finally, the future trends of EMSs for FCHEVs are discussed. This paper can be useful in helping researchers better understand the recent research progress of EMSs for FCHEVs.

In the development of actual vehicles, manufacturers usually adopt a simplified control strategy to ensure the reliability of the control strategy based on the application scenarios. There are two main working modes for the fuel cell system in fuel cell electric vehicles in China. One is the stepped power type, and the other is the following power type. Therefore, the analysis and comparison of these two typical working modes in the power test of fuel cell electric vehicles helps determine how the fuel cell system works in the actual vehicle and how to choose energy management strategies in different application scenarios. We do the actual tests to explore how the two typical control strategies perform in actual vehicles. These two typical control strategies show different characteristics in the same test. It shows that the energy management strategies should be adopted according to the application scenarios and optimization goals. In the stepped power control strategy, the fluctuation of the fuel cell system and the frequency of starting and stopping are significantly reduced, which is beneficial to the durability of the fuel cell system. Compared with the stepped control strategy, the fluctuation of the output power of fuel cell electric vehicles with the following power control strategy increased significantly. At the same time, a simplified state of charge (SOC) test method is proposed. Due to the particularity of the stepped power control strategy, the change of capacity can be used to replace the change of SOC. For the following power control strategy, the change of electric energy can be used instead of SOC changes.

In the years to come, Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) are expected to substantially improve the road safety and environmental impact of the road transport sector. The information from the sensors installed on the vehicle has to be properly integrated with data shared by the road infrastructure (smart road) to realize vehicle control, which preserves traffic safety and fuel/energy efficiency. In this context, the present work proposes a real-time implementation of a control strategy able to handle simultaneously motion and hybrid powertrain controls. This strategy features a cascade of two modules, which were implemented through the model-based design approach in MATLAB/Simulink. The first module is a Model Predictive Control (MPC) suitable for any Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) architecture, acting as a high-level controller featuring an intermediate layer between the vehicle powertrain and the smart road. The MPC handles both the lateral and longitudinal vehicle dynamics, acting on the wheel torque and steering angle at the wheels. It is based on a simplified, but complete ego-vehicle model, embedding multiple functionalities such as an adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, and emergency electronic brake. The second module is a low-level Energy Management Strategy (EMS) of the powertrain realized by a novel and computationally light approach, which is based on the alternative vehicle driving by either a thermal engine or electric unit, named the Efficient Thermal Electric Skipping Strategy (ETESS). The MPC provides the ETESS with a torque request handled by the EMS module, aiming at minimizing the fuel consumption. The MPC and ETESS ran on the same Microcontroller Unit (MCU), and the methodology was verified and validated by processor-in-the-loop tests on the ST Microelectronics board NUCLEO-H743ZI2, simulating on a PC-host the smart road environment and a car-following scenario. From these tests, the ETESS resulted in being 15-times faster than than the well-assessed Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS). Furthermore, the execution time of both the ETESS and MPC was lower than the typical CAN cycle time for the torque request and steering angle (10 ms). Thus, the obtained result can pave the way to the implementation of additional real-time control strategies, including decision-making and motion-planning modules (such as path-planning algorithms and eco-driving strategies).

This article presents an energy management method for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) based on approximate Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (A-PMP). The A-PMP optimizes gearshift commands and torque distribution for overall energy efficiency. As a practical numerical solution in PMP, the proposed methodology utilizes a piecewise linear approximation of the engine fuel rate and state of charge (SOC) derivative by considering drivability and fuel economy simultaneously. Moreover, battery aging is explicitly studied by introducing a control-oriented model, which aims to investigate the effect of battery aging on the optimization performance in the development of the HEVs. An approximate energy management strategy with piecewise linear models is then formulated by the A-PMP, which targets a better performance for the Hamiltonian optimization. The gearshift map is extracted from the optimal results in the standard PMP to hinder frequent gearshift by considering both drivability and fuel economy. Utilizing an approximated Hamilton function, the torque distribution, gearshift command, and the battery aging degradation are jointly optimized under a unified framework. Simulations are performed for dynamic programming (DP), PMP, and A-PMP to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results indicate that the proposed methodology achieves a close fuel economy compared with the DP-based optimal solution. Moreover, it improves the computation efficiency by 50% and energy saving by 3.5%, compared with the PMP, while ensuring good drivability and fuel efficiency.

The extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) can solve the problems of short driving range and long charging time of pure electric vehicles, but it is necessary to control the engine working points and allocate the power of the energy sources reasonably. In order to improve the fuel economy of the vehicle, an energy management strategy (EMS) that can adapt to the daily driving characteristics of the driver and adjust the control parameters online is proposed in this paper. Firstly, through principal component analysis (PCA) and iterative self-organizing data analysis techniques algorithm (ISODATA) of historical driving data, a typical driving cycle which can describe driving characteristics of the driver is constructed. Then offline optimization of control parameters by adaptive simulated annealing under each typical driving cycle and online recognition of driving cycles by extreme learning machine (ELM) are applied to the adaptive multi-workpoints energy management strategy (A-MEMS) of E-REV. In the end, compared with traditional rule-based control strategies, A-MEMS achieves good fuel-saving and emission-reduction result by simulation verification, and it explores a new and feasible solution for the continuous upgrade of the EMS.

This paper presents a real-time energy management strategy to distribute the power demand between two independent motors properly. Based on the characteristics of the novel transmission system, an enumeration-based searching approach is used to hunt for the optimal working points for both motors to maximize the overall efficiency. Like many energy management strategies, approaches that focus on reducing energy consumption can result in frequent gearshifts. To improve drivability and make a balance between energy consumption and gearshifts, a cost function is designed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a mathematical model is built, and the simulation results demonstrate the achieved improvements.
