The change in politeness rules affects and reconfigures the treatment system of a given language. Finding scarce primary sources, such as the 16th and 17th century manuscripts, allows us to study, in addition to the forms of treatment, the formation of a new politeness agreement. This new agreement is based on a new society that began to be formed in American Portuguese.in the middle of the 16th century The indices of this new system are the forms vossa mercê and você. The arrangements made at the beginning of the colonization process affected the courtesy forms and functions of what would become the Brazilian Portuguese (BP), which are the reasons why this paper emphasizes the 16th and 17th centuries. We investigate in this article (a) manuscripts produced between 16th and 17th centuries that have never been analysed by the perspective of the Portuguese’s address system and (b) the use of vossa mercê and você in literary texts and in metalinguistic sources. In the end of the paper, final observations are made in the light of the proposed research. One of the contributions made by this study is the register of the terminus a quo of the word você, which dates from the year 1638. We argue for the interdisciplinarity of Philology, Paleography and Historical Linguistics studies and for the constitution of an effective dialogue between the state collective projects that investigate the BP history, considering its common socio-history.

This paper presents the C-ORAL-ESQ, a speech corpus of Brazilian patients with schizophrenia. The corpus will comprise 40 psychotherapy sessions with male and female patients, different age and schooling levels. The C-ORAL-ESQ will be segmented into utterances and intonation units based on a prosodic/pragmatic criterion that regards the utterance as a speech act (AUSTIN, 1962), i.e., a stretch of speech that is autonomous from the prosodic and pragmatic standpoint (CRESTI, 2000). Furthermore, this paper reports studies carried out by Cresti, Dovetto, and Rocha that have looked at informational structure in the speech of Italian patients with schizophrenia (CRESTI; DOVETTO; ROCHA, 2015). The authors have pointed out a tendency for some patients to produce utterances with less variability in terms of both illocutionary types and non-illocutionary tone units.

Philology. Linguistics ,P1-1091 - Abstract

This paper aims to present some reflections on the textual constitution of the current textbooks. The discussed textbooks are for the 6th grade. As for the thematic content, each chapter presents key issues that need to be introduced and maintained, hence the relevance of processes such as referential continuity. Through the analysis of referential continuity strategies used in textbooks for elementary school, the aim of this paper is to verify how referential continuity occurs, and how the main / secondary topics are introduced and maintained, retaken, and recategorized in a way that is within the reach of the reader’s understanding.

This paper reports on a contrastive study of Brazilian Portuguese um monte de NP and Moscow Standard Russian kucha NPgen quantifying binominal constructions, under a usage-based constructionist approach. To identify semantic specificities in both constructions, an empirical investigation based on collostructional analysis was conducted. The results indicate that despite some similarities between Portuguese and Russian in terms of cognitive operations involved in the conceptualization of the binominal quantifying constructions um monte de NP and kucha NPgen, there are specificities concerning each construction in each language in terms of semantic compatibility of lexemes co-occurring in them.

This paper aims at investigating the segmentation and translation strategies used by human translators. The analysis is performed at the textual structure following the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). The corpus consists of thirteen synopses of films and their English-Portuguese versions made by undergraduate students of Translation. In the analysis, we investigated the frequency of agreement between text segmentation into elementary discourse units and compared the rhetorical structure of both the source text and the translations. The analysis allowed us to identify five different strategies and two inadequacies used by translators in the process of translating texts from English to Portuguese. The results show that human translators, unlike mechanical translators, promote inevitable transformations in the linguistic structures of the translated texts, which are the result of the translators’ relationship with both the foreign language and their first language. Because it is human, it distances itself from an ideal of perfection, as well as from a possible search for structural equivalences between languages that are, strictly speaking, different.

Intelligibility ,Verbs ending in -ed ,Brazilian listeners ,Variation ,Dynamic System Theory ,Philology. Linguistics ,P1-1091 - Abstract
This study investigated the possible influence of the allomorphs [t, d, ɪd] in the intelligibility of 48 verbs ending in -ed, half in the first and half in the second intelligibility test, which were produced by eight speakers from four different L1 backgrounds (e.g., BP, Spanish, German, English) and orthographically transcribed by 14 Brazilian listeners in two intelligibility tests within a four-month interval. Results of the first intelligibility test indicated that verbs ending in the allomorph [t] were more intelligible than verbs ending in the allomorph [ɪd], which in turn were more intelligible than verbs ending in the allomorph [d]. However, results for the second intelligibility test did not follow the same tendency and indicated that the intelligibility of verbs ending in the allomorphs [t, ɪd] were very similar whereas the results for the intelligibility of verbs with the allomorph [d] increased since it had large room for improvement from the first to the second test. Moreover, results also indicated that there was variation in the intelligibility of verbs ending in the three allomorphs for each learner and among the learners, demonstrating that the language development is a dynamic, varied, and complex system, as the Dynamic System Theory proposes.

The acquisition of a second language (L2) is a highly demanding cognitive task that, in terms of phonology, happens through the siege of the first language (L1). The cue-weighting, that is, the attention given to specific cues in the L2 speech and the ability to change the focus of attention to relevant cues is essential for L2 speech processing and tends to be affected by the patterns of the L1. The present study aimed to produce a systematic review of the studies concerning attention and L2 phonological knowledge. Research participants, attention and phonological assessment, and the main results of eighteen studies published between 2010 and 2021 were described and analyzed. The data gathered indicates that the bulk of the research carried out is of cross-sectional studies with attention control and perceptual discrimination tasks with L2 English adult learners. Most studies pointed out that attention has an important role in L2 phonological acquisition. At the beginning of acquisition, attention seems to be more important to L2 speech processing than for proficient L2 speakers when automatization takes place. Focusing, selecting, shifting, dividing, and sustaining attention as well as being flexible and having good inhibitory control have a special role in L2 phonological acquisition. The need for further investigation with controlled variables, other L1/L2 combinations, and multiple assessment instruments is evident.

Languages spoken in the Colombian Amazon ,Sound Alternations proposal ,Structural scope ,Areal scope ,Philology. Linguistics ,P1-1091 - Abstract
Dixon and Aikhenvald (1999) considered the existence of Amazon as a linguistic macroarea, from which it has recognized the separation between Vaupés and Caquetá-Putumayo areas in Colombia (Epps; Michael, 2017), where without georeferencing were used to characterize areal scopes. Through phonological criterium of Sound Alternations (Donegan; Stampe, 2009) in combination with methods without (García-Vallve; Puigbo, 2016 [2002]) and without georeferencing methods (Nerbonne et al., 2018) were applied to twenty-five languages from the compilation of González de Pérez and Rodríguez de Montes (2000), it was inferred that structural classifications aren’t very similar than areal. Moreover, it has found that, respect to phonological criterion, Vaupés isn’t an even terrain, but it’s divided between the North and South.

The widespread use of Pt. você and Sp. usted in America is a well-known fact. However, the explanation for their diachronic expansion is still a puzzling question. Given the fact that Pt. você and Sp. usted surfaced in Europe as late as the end of the 16th century, many authors wonder how these address pronouns could have spread over the whole colonial territories of Portugal and Spain, at a time when the colonization process was largely accomplished. The paper shows that this puzzling question is ill put. Pt. você and Sp. usted are reduced grammaticalized results of Late Medieval Pt. vossa mercê and Sp. vuestra merced. Both diachronic data and 20th century dialect data used for diachronic reconstruction show that an impressive bulk of reduced variants was in use already in the 16th century. The late fixing of one of these reduced forms, Pt. você / Sp. usted, is a simple matter of standardization. In this process, the colonial civil and military administration played an important role. In Portugal, the variants associated with the path vossa mercê > você were largely used in dialects, but ruled out by Lisbon’s elite. This is the reason why você is marginal in European Portuguese.

This paper investigates the contexts in which stress allows or blocks external vowel sandhi processes in Lung’Ie, a Portuguese-based Creole language spoken in Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe. By analyzing the relationship between stress and tone in the sandhi processes, this research intends to demonstrate that the tonal pattern of Lung’Ie, such as described by Maurer (2009), does not block the phenomenon, which occurs in certain contexts of stress. We thus hope to further contribute to the understanding of the suprasegmental system of Lung’Ie and of the relationship between stress and tone in this language.

This paper presents the melodic characteristics of the yes/no questions of Spanish, analysed on the assumptions of Melodic Analysis of Speech (MAS) (Cantero, 2002; Cantero and Font-Rotchés, 2007, 2009). Dialogues of Brazilian university students from Rio de Janeiro compose the corpus. Those dialogues were recorded in a pilot Spanish course, Idioma ssem Fronteiras (Spanish) that was offered by Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2016. Results indicate that Spanish learners produced patterns similar to the one observed in Spanish from Spain. Nevertheless, the percentages of rising final inflection were lower. To a lesser extent, learners used a pattern described for Brazilian Portuguese, which in Spanish of Spain has emphatic meaning, rather than interrogative meaning.

In this paper, we analyzed the intonational speech pattern of three children, who were born in the city of Juiz de Fora, state of Minas Gerais, are native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and whose ages ranged from 5:9 to 6:8 years old. Thus, based on Frota et al. (2015), questionnaires, that simulated ordinary conversational situations, were administered to the children in order to investigate the prosodic contours – intonational pattern, prominence and rhythm – used by those three children and compare them with the intonational patterns of adult speakers of the same dialect, which are described in the Interactive Atlas of Romance Intonation (PRIETO et al., 2010-2014). Results of the present study indicate that children acquire the intonational patterns gradually, as they acquire the segments, words and syntactic structures of their native language.

In this paper, we analyze the prosodic phrasing of the sequence connector “aí” on spontaneous speech and reading of Brazilian Portuguese speakers from Rio de Janeiro. . The analysis is based on two phonological theories: the Prosodic Phonology and the Autosegmental Metrical Intonational Phonology and on the theory and methodology proposed by Experimental Acoustic Phonetics, using the software PRAAT. Results showed that: (i) the item is more frequently phrased integrated to its following IP, working as the first prosodic word of this domain, in its pre-nuclear position; (ii) the nuclear contour of the IP before “aí” typically presents the melodic movement of neutral declarative sentences in Portuguese /HL* L%/; (iii) the pitch accent more frequently associated to “aí” is /LH*/; (iv) when the form “aí” constitutes an independent IP, the high/rising boundary tone /(L)H%/ is more frequent, which characterizes the continuous contour in BP; and (v) pauses have a different behavior on spontaneous speech and reading.

This paper focuses on the variable process of R-resyllabification, which occurs when the rhotic is in external final coda and is followed by a vowel of subsequent word (calo[r, ɾ, ɹ, h] infernal ~ calo[Ø] infernal ~ calo[ɾĩ]fernal “infernal heat”), and the relation of the process to prosodic constituent boundaries in the South of Brazil. The corpus consists of speech samples from 12 graduate students , born in Curitiba (4), Florianópolis (4) and Porto Alegre (4), who were grouped according to sex - male and female, and age - 18 to 30 and 50 to 65 (https://alib.ufba.br/). The theoretical and methodological frameworks of this study include Quantitative Sociolinguistics and the Theory of Prosodic Hierarchy. A total of 1,136 words were analyzed: 159 non-verbs and 977 verbs. The multivariate analysis shows that the rothic resyllabification rule is favoured by: 1) the morphological class of the word – non-verbs; 2) the length of the word which carries the R - 1 syllable; 3) the type of vowel in the syllabic nucleus - [+back]; and 4) the type of prosodic boundary - prosodic word.

The current paper focuses on the various types of laughter recorded during real social interactions in a virtual immersive environment. With this experiment, we investigate whether human beings are able to discriminate social from spontaneous laughter on the basis of auditory or audiovisual laughs presented outside any context. Towards this aim, we carried out two perceptual experiments proposing audio alone and audiovisual conditions, which were taken by French and Japanese native subjects. Each subject listened to (or looked at) 162 laughs and chose one response among three possibilities: social, spontaneous or unknown. The results of both experiments show that all participants are able to discriminate these two types of laughter with quite good confidence without contextual information: the correct identification rate for spontaneous laughter is about 70% with a similar amount for social laughter in audio alone and audiovisual conditions. We then extracted acoustic characteristics for each laugh in order to investigate potential differences between the two types of laughter. A multifactorial analysis showed that perceptual behaviors and some acoustic features (F0 and duration) are correlated. Especially, we observe a significant difference between social and spontaneous laughter through the features of total duration and voiced duration. Finally, we conducted a perceptual experiment on the subcategorization of social laughs based on three social factors: speaker’s physical state, speaker’s involvement and psychological distance. The results show that social laughter is characterized by similar contexts for both groups of listeners, except by Japanese subjects who regard the psychological distance between partners as distant.

This paper aims to investigate the translation process of singable lyrics, verifying which strategies the translator uses so the translated song remains both logocentric and melocentric when compared to the original. For this purpose, we compared the original sheet music of the song “Seasons of Love” by Jonathan Larson, from the musical “Rent” in 1994, with its Brazilian Portuguese translation by Mariana Elisabetsky, in 2016. On the basis of the aspects of Brazilian Portuguese phonology, in particular rhythm, stress and the processes of segmental junction (COLLISCHONN, 2001), in the concepts of metric accent and rhythm from the music perspective (BENNETT, 1987; LACERDA 1967), and with the translation process of singable lyrics (FRAZON, 2008), we could see that the literal translation of a song is not possible when its intention is to be sung. Therefore, the translator needs to adjust the translated song in order to fit its lyrics into the melody, so the translated song can be naturally sung along with its original sheet music.

This paper investigates the relation, in perception and production, between prosodic marking of narrow focus and secondary stress in yes-no questions in Brazilian Portuguese. A 21-utterance corpus was built, presenting systematic variations in the focalized words, in terms of position of focus in the utterance, and number of pre-tonic syllables (linked to the presence of a secondary stress). The focused word appears at the following prosodic contexts: at the end of utterance, as head of the intonation phrase, or at a strong position as head of phonological phrase (ɸ), or at a weak position in ɸ. The phonological phrase may be found at the beginning, middle or final part of utterance. Stimuli were evaluated by 20 listeners for the localization of the narrow focus, with high recognition scores for all the contexts analysed. Acoustic descriptions support a description of narrow focus performed with a geminate intonation peak related to a secondary stress on the focused word, and a temporal compression of the geminated peak in words presenting just one pretonic syllable, that is, without favourable conditions for secondary stress; a significant lengthening of segmental duration was observed in the stressed syllable of the focused word.

This paper aims to describe the behavior of the pretérito perfecto forms in the expression of the immediate past in Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires and San Miguel de Tucumán. The interest comes from the deficiency observed in studies, which, at the most, identify two oppositional tendencies of use of these past tenses in Argentina, without considering, however, the extent of the use or the linguistic and extralinguistic factors that determine the variable phenomenon. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, we compiled a corpus of radio interviews of both diatopic varieties. Using Goldvarb Yosemite, we execute a multivariate analysis that allowed to identify an absolute use of the perfecto simple in the expression of the immediate past in Buenos Aires and a variable use in San Miguel de Tucumán. In this variety, it was possible to observe the use of the perfecto compuesto presents a prestige and characterizes a more innovative use, besides recurring more with factors that allow a continuous reading.

This paper examines the Aktionsart of light verb constructions, by analyzing how the elements constituting them interfere on the Aktionsart of the predicate; moreover, this study analyzes how a verbal situation can belong to different aspectual groups, when they are expressed by full verbs or by light verb constructions. Thus, based on assumptions from Formal Semantics and Lexical Semantics, the main goal of the present work is to investigate the linguistic devices playing some role on the aspectual composition of light verb constructions. Hence, this work concludes that (i) the light verbs present a certain preference for some aspectual groups; (ii) the kind of determiner influences both interpretation and Aktionsart; (iii) the light verb constructions can make a given predicate shift its aspectual properties.
