With increasing urbanization, greywater, generated from domestic activities like bathing and washing, is a marginal water resource that can be valorized to meet irrigation demands and overcome water scarcity. This review paper delves into the characteristics and variability in greywater quality, highlighting the benefits of greywater reuse, such as water conservation, nutrient supply, and potential cost savings, as well as challenges like pathogen contamination and salinity buildup. Various treatment methods, including physical, chemical, and biological processes, are discussed concerning their effective use for irrigation. This paper explores the integration of greywater irrigation with vegetated walls, an innovative urban greening solution that offers numerous environmental and social benefits. The types of vegetated walls, their irrigation requirements, and studies involving greywater application in these systems are discussed. By synthesizing the current knowledge, this review article provides a comprehensive understanding of enhancing urban sustainability through the valorization of an otherwise wasted resource. In water-scarce areas, there is a complex interrelationship between water resources and economic development. This paper studies the relationship between water resources and economic development from an ecosystem services perspective. This paper selected the value of river ecosystem service functions and the comprehensive index of economic development in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) from 2007 to 2018 as the research object, tested the synergy of ecosystem service functions in the basin, and introduced a coupling coordination model to evaluate the synergy of developmental factors. The research results showed that (1) the overall river ecosystem service value in YRB was on the rise, and its distribution was characterized by a high value in the lower reaches and a gradual decrease from the middle reaches to the upper reaches; (2) the synergy of river ecosystem service functions in YRB was mainly reflected in the supply and regulation functions, and the synergy of cultural functions should be improved; (3) the overall coupling and coordination degree showed an upward trend. However, judging from the characteristics of coupled and coordinated degrees, backward ecological development is a long-term problem. The CE-QUAL-W2 model is a significant tool extensively used in lentic environments to analyze eutrophication and water quality. This systematic review of the CE-QUAL-W2 hydrodynamic model revealed its widespread application in analyzing reservoir eutrophication. A total of 151 relevant papers were identified, of which 38 were selected after rigorous analysis, showcasing studies in environmental sciences and water resources. In 2021, we saw the highest number of publications, with six papers; 2022 achieved the highest number of citations, with 113. The model has been widely used across countries, with Iran leading in the number of publications, followed by China and Brazil. The standard combination of CE-QUAL-W2 with the SWAT model reflects its effectiveness in complex watershed studies. CE-QUAL-W2 has demonstrated the ability to predict future environmental conditions and diagnose environmental extremes, and it can calculate various hydrodynamic and water quality parameters. Its increasing use in high-impact scientific journals underscores its global relevance and particular promise for Brazilian aquatic environment studies due to its efficiency and accessibility. With its significant potential, this model is poised to enhance the understanding and management of water resources, contributing to environmental sustainability and inspiring optimism for future applications on a global scale. Planning and managing water resource systems with multipurpose surface reservoirs demand the careful consideration of several critical factors, including system longevity, multiple uses, phased development, substantial financial investments, complex management requirements, uncertainties in predicting future hydrological inputs, and the estimation of economic parameters. Despite the importance of these factors, recent research and software development efforts for water resource system planning and management have predominantly focused on hydrological models. Economic models that describe the phased growth of such systems are often either absent or not fully integrated into decision-making software. Well-established network-based decision support tools, such as MODSIM, AcquaNet, and SIMYLD-II, provide robust hydrological modeling but lack explicit economic sub-models to address the evolving nature of water resource systems over time. This paper introduces a novel approach that combines optimization and simulation techniques to evaluate the multi-year performance of a growing water resource system. By conducting multiple model runs for each phase of system development—each characterized by unique topologies, demand patterns, hydrological conditions, and water delivery preferences—economic analyses are suggested to complete the global evaluation of the system. This comprehensive approach provides valuable insights into long-term planning horizons. Research in this direction continues to evolve, aiming to bridge the gap between hydrological and economic modeling in decision support frameworks. To illustrate the proposed methodology, a test example is presented, showcasing the implementation of the economic calculations and computer routines described in the paper. This paper explores how participatory science helps address water supply challenges in developing countries suffering from water shortages. In the absence of technical capacity to monitor the water supply system, this participation constitutes an excellent alternative to involve citizens in data collection and evaluation of the quality of the water service. The paper presents the design and implementation of a participatory science platform that enables data about the quality of the water supply in the city of Kharas in Palestine to be collected. Thanks to significant citizen participation, the study demonstrates that participatory science enhances the management of the water supply system and public awareness and engagement. Temporal and spatial analysis of collected data helped us to better understand the water supply system and identify the causes of the water service degradation. The study shows that the success of citizen participation requires cooperation between the water staff and citizens, including continuous dialogue and training and the construction of a friendly citizen participation platform. This article focuses on the importance of groundwater quality in coastal areas, particularly in China. It highlights the impact of geogenic contaminants and human-induced pollutants on groundwater quality, which is crucial for sustaining agriculture, industries, and drinking water services. The research papers in this special issue explore various aspects of groundwater quality, including the occurrence of fluoride and nitrate in agricultural areas, the impact of land use on groundwater quality, the natural background levels of contaminants, and the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in different regions. The studies suggest that agricultural contamination and infiltration of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater are significant factors affecting groundwater quality in coastal areas. The findings recommend measures to address nitrate contamination and seawater intrusion, and emphasize the importance of considering organic contaminants in coastal groundwater. The virtual water flow behind product trade provides researchers with ideas to alleviate water problems in China's coastal areas, with accompanying resource and economic implications. This paper adopts a multi-region input–output model to calculate virtual water flows in coastal areas and analyses resource benefits and economic benefits, by combining the water stress index and shadow price, to measure gains and losses of virtual water flow. This study shows that (1) China's coastal areas depends on external water supplies; (2) virtual water flows between coastal and inland areas generated 38.26 billion m3 of net scarce water savings and CNY 31,751 billion of net economic benefits, indicating that coastal areas benefited from virtual water flows from both resource and economic perspectives; (3) virtual water flows among coastal provinces and cities caused 11.10 billion m3 of net scarce water losses, but generated CNY 9784 billion of net economic gains, indicating that a further intensification of water stress in coastal areas, but such a virtual water flow pattern was beneficial from an economic perspective. This paper reveals the resource and economic impacts of virtual water flow at the national scale and among coastal provinces and cities and further proposes suggestions for promoting the beneficial flow of virtual water in coastal areas. To enhance the efficiency of solving the optimal operation model for cascade reservoirs, this paper first constructed an optimal operation model of cascade reservoirs. The model comprehensively considered the ecological flow, the guaranteed output of hydroelectric power plants, and the relaxation constraints of the water level at the end of water supply and storage period. The relaxation constraints refer to two relaxation variable constraints, which are used to ensure that the water levels decline in the water supply period and rise in the water storage periods. At the same time, to avoid the challenges of "dimension disaster" and susceptibility to local optima commonly encountered in existing optimization algorithms when resolving the above model, a novel optimization algorithm, M-IWO-ODDDP, derived from the optimization principles of the Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) and Discrete Differential Dynamic Programming (DDDP) algorithms, was proposed in this paper. The 11 cascade hydropower stations in the Wujiang River basin were used as a case study, and the results showed that the water-level dispatching process exhibited a high degree of conformity with the actual dispatching process during both the water supply and storage periods. Furthermore, the output calculation results based on the M-IWO-ODDDP algorithm were 3.94% and 0.30% higher than the actual output and ODDDP calculation results, respectively, while reducing water abandonment by 21.58% and 4.07%. The Colorado and Mississippi River basins are crucial for water supply, agriculture, and ecological stability in the U.S., yet climate change, water management practices, and energy sector demands pose significant challenges to their sustainability. This paper highlights the potential of leveraging the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) to address these challenges by creating new revenue streams and incentivizing sustainable water management practices. It provides high-level estimates by extrapolating from existing literature. The paper finds that water projects in these basins could generate over 45 million carbon credits annually, potentially attracting around USD 4.5 billion in investments over the next decade. However, challenges such as high costs, complex regulations, and stakeholder coordination must be addressed. The paper also identifies opportunities for advancing water resiliency projects, including increasing public awareness, engaging corporations, and utilizing innovative financing mechanisms. Recommendations include promoting the VCM–water relationship, encouraging methodology innovation, developing pilot programs, investing in digital monitoring technologies, and conducting localized analysis to optimize carbon credit potential in water management. In conclusion, this paper quantifies the potential of water projects to generate carbon credits and indicates that integrating carbon markets with water management strategies can significantly contribute to global climate goals and improve water resilience in these critical regions. This paper analyses the effects of environmental flows on water quality within a highly regulated basin, focusing on the Turia River basin in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. Through water management and water quality models, a series of simulations were conducted, introducing variations in the outflows of the Loriguilla reservoir to evaluate the effects of different environmental flow scenarios on water quality, particularly at the location of the intake for the water supply to Valencia. Three environmental flow scenarios were analyzed, alongside an alternative management scenario, considering their implications on water quality and reliability of water demand. The findings of this paper, particularly the nitrate (NO3−) concentration evolution, highlight the influence of minimum e-flow and e-flow regimes on water quality within the basin. These results suggest that while modifying the current flow regime can lead to some improvements in nitrate concentrations at the Valencia supply intake point, the primary cause of high nitrate concentrations is attributed to irrigation return flow and the pre-existing contamination of the aquifer. This analysis offers valuable insights into the complexities of water quality management in regulated basins, emphasizing the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the diverse factors influencing water quality and demand supply reliability. Accurate assessment and prediction of water shortage risk are essential prerequisites for the rational allocation and risk management of water resources. However, previous water shortage risk assessment models based on copulas have strict requirements for data distribution, making them unsuitable for extreme conditions such as insufficient data volume and indeterminate distribution shapes. These limitations restrict the applicability of the models and result in lower evaluation accuracy. To address these issues, this paper proposes a water shortage risk assessment model based on kernel density estimation (KDE) and copula functions. This approach not only enhances the robustness and stability of the model but also improves its prediction accuracy. The methodology involves initially utilizing kernel density estimation to quantify the random uncertainties in water supply and demand based on historical statistical data, thereby calculating their respective marginal probability distributions. Subsequently, copula functions are employed to quantify the coupled interdependence between water supply and demand based on these marginal probability distributions, thereby computing the joint probability distribution. Ultimately, the water shortage risk is evaluated based on potential loss rates and occurrence probabilities. This proposed model is applied to assess the water shortage risk of the Yuxi water receiving area in the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project, and compared with existing models through experimental contrasts. The experimental results demonstrate that the model exhibits evident advantages in terms of robustness, stability, and evaluation accuracy, with a rejection rate of 0 for the null hypothesis of edge probability fitting and a smaller deviation in joint probability fitting compared to the most outstanding model in the field. These findings indicate that the model presented in this paper is capable of adapting to non-ideal scenarios and extreme climatic conditions for water shortage risk assessment, providing reliable prediction outcomes even under extreme circumstances. Sectorization of a water distribution network (WDN) into district meter areas (DMAs) is considered a key strategy for an efficient management of WDNs. Typically, it involves a two-stage procedure: a clustering stage, in which the division of the WDN into clusters is performed, and a dividing stage, which involves the placement of valves and flow meters on the cluster's boundary pipes to define the DMAs. While recently published methods attempt to enhance both the clustering and dividing stages, they fail to provide decision-making flexibility. They also neglect to consider the presence of existing valves in the WDN, which can significantly affect the evaluated implementation cost, often considered the primary decision-driving factor. This paper presents improvements to the previously introduced DeNSE method for sectorization of WDNs, aiming to address these deficiencies. The methodology consists of a clustering stage, based on the network uniformity index, and a dividing stage, in which the originally used heuristic procedure is replaced with Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization, minimizing implementation cost. Consideration of existing valves in WDN and criteria for water supply security are also included in the dividing stage to offer a better estimate of implementation costs and post-sectorized operational efficiency of the WDN. Finally, GIS visualization is implemented, and a hydraulic model of the sectorized WDN (EPANET file) is generated, providing practitioners with valuable insights and decision-making flexibility. The methodology is tested on a part of the Amsterdam WDN in the Netherlands, serving as a pilot for methodology evaluation. A range of feasible sectorization solutions is generated and compared based on implementation cost and three performance indicators (PIs). The paper provides an in-depth discussion on the selection of preferable sectorization solution. The reported results demonstrate the method's efficiency in optimizing sectorization solutions with minimum implementation cost whilst preserving the WDN operational efficiency and meeting the local design criteria. This Special Issue aims to highlight research articles focusing on the geographical scale of glacier and lake ice variations, as well as the engineering scale of ice properties and their practical applications via laboratory tests and numerical modeling. Additionally, it includes research on ecosystems under lake ice. The main goal is successfully achieved through the joint efforts of authors, anonymous reviewers, and editorial managers. In total, 1 review article and 15 research articles are included in this Special Issue. These articles cover a wide range of topics, including water resources from Chinese mountain glacier variation; lake ice phenology at different latitudes and altitudes around the world; ice properties from laboratory experiments and numerical modeling; ice engineering with different purposes in China and the Arctic; and ecosystem under lake ice at different temporal and spatial scales. This Special Issue received contributions from researchers from different parts of China and from Chinese international cooperation partners because of its focus on "higher temperature ice" under global warming. All papers presented are innovative and of high quality. This Special Issue can promote research on ice properties and their applications in practices ranging from mountains to sea, especially in popular water ecosystem environments under ice during seasonal ice period. This paper addresses the need to improve the understanding of how integrated water resources management (IWRM) can be more effective in addressing diverse water challenges globally. The emphasis is on the use of systems methods to clarify IWRM and create support for it among the academic community for emphasis after the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) expire in 2030. The importance of using IWRM is apparent in frequent reports about challenges like access to water supply and sanitation, water-related disasters, water stresses, water pollution, and ecosystem losses. These affect the SDGs, especially Goal 6 for implementation of IWRM. Among competing paradigms for water resources management practice, IWRM has a more organized advocacy base than others, and sustaining it can support all of them. However, IWRM has been supported for more than 20 years and is still difficult to understand and criticized. Despite this, sustained support for it indicates that it meets an important need. Systems concepts of problem archetypes, skeletonization, and the concept of emergence were used to create a model to explain IWRM as a framework of institutional arrangements and a cooperative problem-solving process. A set of four synthesized problem archetypes was developed, and stakeholder analysis was used to identify key disciplines for its implementation and to identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed among them. These point the way for academics to develop clear explanations while retaining comprehensive perspectives of IWRM. Building and sustaining a viable academic community to support IWRM will face barriers because academics focus mainly on their disciplines where they are rewarded and recognized. This is also evident in the smaller membership bases of interdisciplinary water associations compared to disciplinary or sector-based water associations. IWRM as an organizing platform for cross-sector water resources management has a long-term future if academics focus on it and its support by international partners continues. By explaining IWRM better and marshalling greater support for it among the academic community, the same approach of clarifying ambiguous concepts and providing better ways to engage academia may help other SDG areas. To solve the prominent problem of water supply and demand contradictions, enhance water resource security capabilities, and improve economic, social, and ecological benefits, this paper comprehensively analyzes the water resource situation in Wu'an City and proposes a method for calculating the rigid water demand and total water demand threshold for the whole city and a method for calculating the water supply capacity of multiple water sources. At the same time, taking economic, social, and ecological benefits as the objective function and water resource allocation rules, water supply balance, water supply capacity, total water consumption, water consumption per Chinese Yuan (CNY) 10,000 of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), water consumption per CNY 10,000 of industrial added value, and non-negative as constraints, the water resource optimization allocation model for Wu'an City was constructed, and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III) combined with the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOSPIS) was used to solve it. The results show that the rigid water demand of Wu'an City is met, the Gini coefficient of water supply satisfaction and ecological water shortage in the flat water scenario are both 0, the overall difference in water supply satisfaction of each township is very small, and the ecological water demand is met. Under the current situation, Wu'an City basically achieves a regional supply and demand balance, which can increase water supply by 5.841 million m3 and increase the net economic benefit of water supply by CNY 136.5515 million. The optimized water resource allocation plan has higher economic, social, and ecological benefits. The research can provide technical support for water resource management in Wu'an City. Leakage in water distribution systems (WDSs) causes a waste of water resources and increased carbon emissions. Rapid and accurate leakage localization to reduce the waste of water resources caused by leakages is an important way to overcome the problem. Using spatiotemporal correlation in monitoring data forms the basis of a leakage localization method proposed in a previous study. It is crucial to acknowledge that the chosen parameter settings significantly influence the localization performance of this method. This paper primarily seeks to optimize three essential parameters of this method: localization metrics weight (LMW), score threshold (ST), and the indicator of detection priority (IDP). LMW evaluates the similarity between simulated and measured pressure residuals. ST determines the size of the datasets involved in the spatial clustering, and IDP quantifies the likelihood of a true leakage within the candidate region. The leakage localization method is tested on a realistic full-scale distribution network to assess leakage flow rates and sensor noise. The results show that the optimized parameter settings could improve the efficiency and accuracy of leakage localization. Chaohu Lake, as an important freshwater lake in China, mainly relies on surface runoff for water replenishment, and the environmental quality of the surrounding towns directly impacts the environment of Chaohu Lake. Given the characteristics of rich water resources and extensive river networks in the lake area, this paper utilizes the GEE platform and selects Landsat data from 1992 to 2022, taking Feidong County, one of the lake's inlets, as the study area. We used the water benefit-based ecological index (WBEI) to monitor and evaluate the ecological quality of the study area and employ the Sen+MK trend analysis method to analyze the spatial-temporal characteristics of ecological quality changes. To explore the driving forces behind the spatial-temporal changes in the WBEI, this study selects land use type, elevation, slope, aspect, potential evapotranspiration, annual average precipitation, annual average temperature, and five characteristic factors used in the construction of the WBEI as influencing factors. Using the geo-detector method, the study analyzes the driving forces behind the spatial-temporal changes in the WBEI in the study area. Results show that the WBEI, considering water efficiency, integrates waterbody information into regional environmental quality assessments, comprehensively reflecting the ecological environment of lakeside cities. From 1992 to 2022, the WBEI of the study region shows an increasing trend, with an improved area accounting for 1110.42 km2, or 51.21% of the total area. Among these, the significantly improved area covers 372.9789 km2 or 17.2% of the total area, while the slightly improved area covers 737.4411 km2, corresponding to 34.01% of the total area. Interaction types of influencing factors include bivariate enhancement and nonlinear enhancement, with the primary interactive factors affecting the ecological environment quality change in Feidong County being CLCD∩RVI; changes in land use and vegetation cover are the main driving forces behind the changes in ecological and environmental quality in Feidong County. From 1992 to 2022, the main land type transformations in the study area were from arable land to other land types, with a significant conversion of arable land to construction land, which is the main reason for the degradation of local ecological and environmental quality. The results of this study can provide practical references and theoretical support for ecological environment assessment, governance, and improvement in areas with abundant water resources. Estimating sediment yield in a river is a challenging task in the water resources field. Different methods are available for estimating sediment erosion and yield, but generally they are not spatially distributed in nature. This paper presents the application of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) for estimating soil erosion and integrates it with spatially distributed Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) to calculate sediment yield in a Himalayan river. The study area is Kabeli sub-catchment, located upstream of the Koshi River Basin in the eastern part of Nepal. The Kabeli River is where numerous hydropower projects are envisaged, and sediment-related issues are of major concern. With the use of the RUSLE, the mean annual soil erosion is estimated at 35.96 tons/ha/yr. The estimated specific sediment yield (SSY) from the distributed SDR method is 6.74 tons/ha/yr, which is close to the observed SSY of 7.26 tons/ha/yr using the data records of ~8 years. Based on correlation analysis, the topographic factor ( L S ) is the most sensitive RUSLE parameter with respect to sediment erosion. The sloping areas near the river hillslope are particularly vulnerable to soil erosion. The results indicate that the approach employed in this study may be potentially applied in other catchments with similar physiographic characteristics for the estimation of sediment yield. "Reliable water supply" does not have a clear definition in the Western United States, where water resources are limited and such a definition would be especially useful. In Utah, the three water agencies and 500 public water systems have no consistent method to define, evaluate, and report it, potentially leading to an inability to meet regulatory water demands. We propose a unified definition of reliable water supply for Utah's public water suppliers that can also be used elsewhere. We derive our definition from a two-part qualitative analysis: (1) an extensive review of existing definitions in industry and academia and (2) semi-structured interviews with managers of six diverse Utah water utilities. We propose that water supply be defined by three overlapping components—hydrology, infrastructure, and governance—and that reliability be defined by the capacity of the limiting component. The results from the qualitative analysis support our definition and further indicate that a definition is necessary to precede quantitative evaluations, set policy, and provide consistency to water resources management. In a transboundary river basin, downstream states frequently express concerns regarding the potential utilization of water resources by upstream states as a tool for exerting coercion. This fact contributes to instilling doubt in the applicability of negotiations, even in transboundary basins that possess strong international agreements. In an effort to address the issue, this paper introduces the painted water concept. It divides upstream states' available water into three triage color volumes before reaching downstream states in ascending order of negotiability: green, yellow, and red. Additionally, downstream states must consider the dynamics of transitions of painted water classes over time when developing their negotiation strategies and water policies. In order to assess the concept's contribution in practice, we analyze trilateral riparian negotiations along the Blue Nile River basin, based on a "what-if" analysis approach under four global future scenarios. These results could shed light on part of the complexity of the Blue Nile negotiation and mainstream the water policies and perspectives of riparian states. Here, this paper shows that the painted water concept can provide multidisciplinary insights into proactive water negotiations. With ongoing climate change, new threats appear to the operation of water supply systems (WSSs), which are related to the amount of available drinking water resources, its quality, the operation of existing water supply infrastructure and changes in consumer behavior. The paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the state of knowledge on the impact of climate change on the failure of water supply infrastructure. The bibliometric analysis was performed based on the VOSviewer program. The results of the analysis indicate current research trends in this area around the world and allow the identification of strengths and weaknesses. Most research concerns the identification of factors related to the impact of climate on the failure rate of water distribution systems. A popular research topic was also the prediction of water supply network failures, taking into account the impact of climatic factors. The main research gap is determining the impact of climate change on water quality. The acquired knowledge can be used by water companies, policy-makers and other researchers to plan adaptation strategies to climate change, which pose new challenges for the operation of water supply systems. This special issue of the journal "Water" focuses on the management and sustainable development of the Yellow River basin in China. In times of climate change, periods of drought will occur more frequently. This causes challenges for water use, ranging from limitations on the navigability of water courses, limited availability of water for irrigation and drinking water supply, reduced hydropower production, increasing concentrations of pollutants, deteriorating water quality, and ecosystem degradation. Dealing with droughts, however, is a complex puzzle due to the multi-level governance characteristics of international river basins and the need to meet the freshwater demands of all sectors involved. This increases the need to address drought issues in a coordinated way, along all levels of decision making. Thus far, the way this must be executed has been under-researched. This paper addresses this knowledge gap as it aims to provide design principles for good multi-level drought risk governance in international river basins. In order to meet our aim, we first reviewed literature on multi-level and good governance and established an assessment framework. This framework was applied in a case study on drought risk governance in the international Rhine basin. Policy documents were analyzed and key informants interviewed. We found that although the governance practice in the basin meets most of our framework criteria, differences between the international level, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland also occurred. We have synthesized our findings into a list of 10 design principles for good multi-level drought risk governance, which could function as a starting point for the analysis and improvement of other multi-level drought risk governance practices. Water resources are a fundamental natural and strategic economic resource and are closely related to high-quality economic and societal development. This paper uses the pilot implementation of the water resource tax reform to explore the impact of that reform on the green innovation and total factor productivity of enterprises. The study sample includes data for high water-consuming A-share listed enterprises in Shenzhen and Shanghai, China, from 2007 to 2021; the double-difference method was used for the analysis. Study findings indicate that replacing water resource fees with taxes significantly improves the green innovation level and total factor productivity of enterprises. Green innovation has a significant partial mediating effect between the water resource tax reform and total factor productivity. The water resource tax reform promotes green innovation in enterprises, enhancing total factor productivity. When considering different types of enterprise property rights, the economic effect of the water resource tax reform is more pronounced in non-state-owned enterprises, compared to state-owned enterprises. Low-temperature multi-effect distillation (LT-MED) can be used to desalinate and demineralize highly mineralized mine water, facilitating the recycling and reuse of water resources. This study conducted a simulation of LT-MED technology for treating highly mineralized mine water using Aspen Plus and proposed a novel cross-flow optimization scheme. Initially, the impact of operational parameters such as process configuration, number of evaporation effects, and steam input on the gained output ratio (GOR) and scaling risk of a conventional LT-MED system was analyzed. It was found that the number of effects and heating steam flow rate had the most significant influence on GOR, while different processes exhibited limitations regarding GOR and scaling trends. To address these issues, this paper introduced a cross-flow operation process that combined forward, backward, and parallel flow. The simulation results indicated that, under conditions of eight effects, a maximum evaporation temperature of 70 °C, a temperature difference between adjacent effects of 4 °C, and a feed temperature of 45 °C, the cross-flow process—where the feed was introduced from the sixth effect—achieved the highest GOR and significantly reduced scaling risks compared to parallel and backward flow configurations. Finally, to further utilize low-pressure exhaust steam from the final effect of the cross-flow LT-MED system, mechanical vapor compression (MVC) and thermal vapor compression (TVC) were integrated into the LT-MED process. The thermodynamic performance of the coupled system was analyzed, and the simulations demonstrated that the coupled system outperformed the standalone use of either TVC or MVC, with the LT-MED-MVC-TVC system showing superior performance overall. The degradation and failure of the urban water supply network may lead to serious safety hazards, including pipe breaks, water supply interruptions, water resource losses, and contaminant intrusions. The risk evaluation of water supply pipeline failure in a distribution network is a challenging task, because most of the available data cannot fully reflect pipeline failure events and many of the mechanisms still cannot be fully understood. Therefore, a predictive model is urgently needed to assess pipeline failure risk based on available data. In this paper, based on the traditional risk assessment theory, seven main factors affecting pipeline failure are selected and scored, and then a pipeline failure model is established by using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) neural network. The model uses the neural network training of historical data to evaluate the failure of the water supply pipeline, and the PSO is used to optimize the neural network to effectively improve the training time and accuracy. The model error and correlation coefficient are 0.003 and 0.987, respectively. Urban–Rural Water supply integration is one of the effective ways to address rural drinking water safety issues. With the rapid economic development and urbanization, the gap between urban and rural water supply has become increasingly evident, and rural areas face severe challenges such as insufficient water sources and substandard water quality. Yunnan Province, due to its unique topography and natural environment, encounters numerous difficulties in promoting the construction and development of urban–rural water supply integration, and there is a severe lack of research specifically focused on sustainable development measures for urban–rural water supply integration in Yunnan Province. In light of this, this paper first reviews the current research status on urban–rural water supply integration both domestically and internationally, pointing out that existing studies mainly focus on optimizing urban water supply systems, addressing rural drinking water safety issues, and exploring water supply management models. It then analyzes the challenges faced by Yunnan Province in advancing urban–rural water supply integration, including limitations in engineering construction, inadequate operation and maintenance, complex and variable water source conditions, and insufficient public awareness of water conservation. In response to these issues, a series of sustainable development measures are proposed, including revitalizing existing assets, enhancing construction planning and quality, promoting water pricing reforms, upgrading the technical system for drinking water safety assurance, and advancing the information technology construction of urban–rural water supply integration, with the aim of providing references and insights for the sustainable development of urban–rural water supply integration in Yunnan Province and other regions. Because of its unique geographical properties, the Yaoquanshan area of Wudalianchi City, Heilongjiang Province, contains rich mineral water resources. We have carried out much research on the mineral water in the Yaoquanshan area of Wudalianchi City, which has also been supplemented by of previous studies. In this paper, through a controlled audio geoelectromagnetic method, geological drilling, groundwater level monitoring and water quality analysis, the structure, regional geology, hydrogeology and water geochemistry, as well as the characteristics of the distribution of metasilicate mineral water and natural soda water, the formation mechanism and the recharge, runoff and excretion of groundwater in the study area, are discussed. This paper introduces WaterGPT, a language model designed for complex multimodal tasks in hydrology. WaterGPT is applied in three main areas: (1) processing and analyzing data such as images and text in water resources, (2) supporting intelligent decision-making for hydrological tasks, and (3) enabling interdisciplinary information integration and knowledge-based Q&A. The model has achieved promising results. One core aspect of WaterGPT involves the meticulous segmentation of training data for the supervised fine-tuning phase, sourced from real-world data and annotated with high quality using both manual methods and GPT-series model annotations. These data are carefully categorized into four types: knowledge-based, task-oriented, negative samples, and multi-turn dialogues. Additionally, another key component is the development of a multi-agent framework called Water_Agent, which enables WaterGPT to intelligently invoke various tools to solve complex tasks in the field of water resources. This framework handles multimodal data, including text and images, allowing for deep understanding and analysis of complex hydrological environments. Based on this framework, WaterGPT has achieved over a 90% success rate in tasks such as object detection and waterbody extraction. For the waterbody extraction task, using Dice and mIoU metrics, WaterGPT's performance on high-resolution images from 2013 to 2022 has remained stable, with accuracy exceeding 90%. Moreover, we have constructed a high-quality water resources evaluation dataset, EvalWater, which covers 21 categories and approximately 10,000 questions. With the increasing complexity of societal and environmental problems in the Anthropocene, the use of both classification-based approaches, which provide in-depth understanding within disciplinary boundaries, and citation-based approaches, which provide interdisciplinary research, has been encouraged. However, there are limited comparisons of the knowledge networks produced between these two approaches, which compromises our capacity to manage technological development. This paper aims to investigate the similarities and differences of river technology networks produced using classification-based and citation-based approaches. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database from 1863 to 2020 was used as the data source. River technology systems contained three interactive subsystems: water demand, water supply, and water management, and the structure was measured using network-based metrics. It was found that river technology systems constructed using the classification-based and the citation-based approaches developed similarly in terms of their temporal, spatial, and compositional features. The structural differences were attributed to the addition of an external system that draws upon interdisciplinary knowledge beyond water resources. Both approaches can be used for guiding technology management, with the classification-based approach being more effective for understanding the content of innovations and the citation-based approach being more effective in gathering information beyond the water resource discipline. The water supply pipeline is regarded as the "lifeline" of the city. In recent years, pipeline accidents caused by aging and other factors are common and have caused large economic losses. Therefore, in order to avoid large economic losses, it is necessary to analyze the failure prediction of pipelines so that the pipelines that are going to fail can be replaced in a timely manner. In this paper, we propose a method for predicting the failure pressure of pipelines, i.e., a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the weights and thresholds of a BP neural network. The first step was to determine the topology of the neural network and the number of input and output variables. The second step was to optimize the weights and thresholds initially set for the back propagation neural network using a genetic algorithm. Finally, the optimized back-propagation neural network was used to simulate and predict pipeline failures. It was proved by examples that compared with the separate back propagation neural network model and the optimized and trained genetic algorithm-back propagation neural network, the model performed better in simulation prediction, and the prediction accuracy could reach up to 91%, whereas the unoptimized back propagation neural network model could only reach 85%. Large-scale urban water distribution network simulation plays a critical role in the construction, monitoring, and maintenance of urban water distribution systems. However, during the simulation process, matrix inversion calculations generate a large amount of computational data and consume significant amounts of time, posing challenges for practical applications. To address this issue, this paper proposes a parallel gradient calculation algorithm based on GPU hardware and the CUDA Toolkit library and compares it with the EPANET model and a model based on CPU hardware and the Armadillo library. The results show that the GPU-based model not only achieves a precision level very close to the EPANET model, reaching 99% accuracy, but also significantly outperforms the CPU-based model. Furthermore, during the simulation, the GPU architecture is able to efficiently handle large-scale data and achieve faster convergence, significantly reducing the overall simulation time. Particularly in handling larger-scale water distribution networks, the GPU architecture can improve computational efficiency by up to 13 times. Further analysis reveals that different GPU models exhibit significant differences in computational efficiency, with memory capacity being a key factor affecting performance. GPU devices with larger memory capacity demonstrate higher computational efficiency when processing large-scale water distribution networks. This study demonstrates the advantages of GPU acceleration technology in the simulation of large-scale urban water distribution networks and provides important theoretical and technical support for practical applications in this field. Oilfield Sewage System Scheduling is a complicated, large-scale, nonlinear system problem with multiple variables. The complexity of the sewage system pipeline network connection grows along with the ongoing building of oilfield stations, and the shortcomings of the sewage system water quantity scheduling program based on human experience decision-making become increasingly apparent. The key to solving this problem is to realize the digital and intelligent scheduling of sewage systems. Taking the sewage system of an oil production plant in Daqing oilfield as the research object, the water scheduling model of the sewage system is established in this paper. Aiming at the complex nonlinear characteristics of the model, the Levy flight speed updating operator, the adaptive stochastic offset operator, and the Brownian motion selection optimization operator are established by taking advantage of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm. Based on these operators, a hybrid PSO-CS algorithm is proposed, which jumps out of the local optimum and has a strong global search capability. Comparing PSO-CS with other algorithms on the CEC2022 test set, it was found that the PSO-CS algorithm ranked first in all 12 test functions, proving the excellent solving performance of the PSO-CS algorithm. Finally, the PSO-CS is applied to solve a water scheduling model for the sewage system of an oil production plant in Daqing Oilfield. It is found that the scheduling plan optimized by PSO-CS has a 100% water supply rate to the downstream water injection station, and the total energy consumption of the scheduling plan on the same day is reduced from 879.95 × 106 m5/d to 712.84 × 106 m5/d, which is a 19% reduction in energy consumption. Water resources management and the broad concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) attract varied perspectives about their effectiveness and equity as they address diverse needs across sectors and contextual situations. Managers in the water sector generally support their current governance models, while anti-poverty advocates seek more equity in the distribution of resources. Another group of stakeholders claims a lack of inclusivity in decision-making, leading to inequitable outcomes due to hegemony and colonialization of the water management domain by sector experts, officials, and other actors. IWRM focuses on reforms in water governance to achieve greater participation and sharing of power by all sectors of society in decision-making. It can facilitate the involvement of all groups of stakeholders, including those who may in some cases need to engage in social action to address water issues. This paper reviews the claims about the validity of IWRM and analyzes them according to management scenarios where water is a connector among sector issues. The scenarios show that participation in utility and local government decisions is the main pathway for urban water, wastewater, and stormwater management, while the same pathway is more difficult to organize in dispersed situations for domestic supply and irrigation in rural areas, some cases of aquifer management, and management of sprawling flood risk zones. The body of knowledge about participation in water resources management is robust, but organizational and financial capacities among existing entities pose barriers. Water resources management and IWRM do involve hegemony, and the field of practice has been colonialized, but the existential issues and complexity of the decisions and systems involved challenge society to manage successfully while assuring equity and participation through governance reform. Lake Taihu, a subtropical shallow lake in the Yangtze River Basin, is the third-largest freshwater lake in China. It serves not only as a crucial source of drinking water and an ecological resource but also holds significant economic, tourism, and fisheries value. Phytoplankton, a vital component of aquatic ecosystems, plays a critical role in nutrient cycling and maintaining water structure. Its community composition and concentration reflect changes in the aquatic environment, making it an important biological indicator for monitoring ecological conditions. Understanding the impact of water quality on phytoplankton is essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the sustainable use of water resources. This paper focuses on Lake Taihu, with water samples collected in February, May, August, and November from 2011 to 2019. Using quantile regression, a robust statistical analysis tool, the study investigates the heterogeneous effects of water quality on phytoplankton and seasonal variations. The results indicate significant seasonal differences in water quality in Lake Taihu, which substantially influence phytoplankton, showing weakly alkaline characteristics. When phytoplankton concentrations are low, pondus hydrogenii (pH), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), water temperature (WT), and conductivity significantly affect them. At medium concentrations, COD, TP, TN, and WT have significant effects. At high concentrations, transparency and dissolved oxygen (DO) significantly impact phytoplankton, while TP no longer has a significant effect. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and environmental managers, supporting the prevention and control of harmful algal blooms in Lake Taihu and similar aquatic systems. This paper presents the application of the Comparison of Flow Pattern Distribution (CFPD) method for detecting water leakage and understanding consumption behaviors at both microscale and macroscale. Implemented at Lille University's Scientific Campus, this research utilizes Automated Meter Reading (AMR) to collect real-time water supply and consumption data. The research successfully identified several significant leak events by analyzing this data with the CFPD method on weekly and daily scales. The analysis of the data resulted in identifying the seasonal and operational consumption patterns across different periods of the year. Based on the principle of water supply and demand flow and the natural flow of water, this paper analyzes the flow direction and discharge of water resources in the study area. In order to provide scientific and systematic implementation suggestions for regional water resource protection management and ecological compensation, a SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model was constructed to quantify the water resource supply of the upper Hanjiang River basin at three spatial scales: pixel, sub-basin, and administrative unit. The water demand at the three spatial scales was calculated using the LUCC (Land Use and Land Coverage) and water consumption index. The supply and benefit zones under different spatial and temporal scales were obtained. Simultaneously, this study uncovered the spatiotemporal dynamics inherent in water resource supply and demand, alongside elucidating the spatial extent and flow attributes of water supply. The ecological compensation scheme of water resource supply–demand was preliminarily determined. The findings indicate an initial increase followed by a decrease in both the water supply and demand in the upper reaches of the Han River, accompanied by spatial disparities in the water supply distribution. The direction of the water supply generally flows from branch to main stream. The water supply system (WSS) is an anthropotechnical system whose reliability depends on proper human activity. Research indicates that 75% of WSS failures are due to human errors. The water treatment plant (WTP) is a key element of the WSS. The water treatment process requires human control as the operator. His task is to maintain an appropriate level of reliability and safety for the system by controlling the technological objects. The aim of the work was to assess the reliability of the WTP operator. The paper presents a Human Reliability Assessment (HRA) of the operator of the WTP using the Fuzzy-Bayes CREAM method. The values of the Human Error Probability (HEP) for operators were determined, which are key to carrying out further analyses of the human impact on the reliability and operational safety of anthropotechnical critical infrastructure systems. The HEP value of the water treatment plant operator varies in the range of 0.0005–0.0746 (depending on the technological process). Identification of new threats related to the impact of the human factor on the WSS's functioning and taking them into account in reliability calculations will allow for a better representation of actual operating conditions. Ecological watersheds (eco-watersheds) are of great significance for boosting the construction of ecological civilization and realizing the ecological protection and high-quality development of watersheds. In order to establish a scientific eco-watershed evaluation index system, this paper refers to the river health evaluation index system, the water resources coupling evaluation index system, and the happy river evaluation index system, and reviews the development process of the ecological watershed evaluation index system. According to the eco-watershed theoretical system, combined with the relevant contents of policies and regulations, thousands of evaluation indicators that have been collected are screened using the theoretical analysis method and the frequency analysis method. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation index system of Weihe River eco-watersheds was constructed, including three first-level indicators: watershed water resources, socio-economic, and ecological. These were further subdivided into eight second-level indicators, namely water security, water resources, water economy, water management, water culture, water environment, water ecology, and water landscape. These second-level indicators were then further broken down into 60 third-level indicators. On the basis of determining the evaluation standards of Weihe River eco-watersheds, the evaluation weights were determined using the gray correlation method and the AHP-entropy comprehensive weight method (comprehensive weight), resulting in the establishment of an evaluation model and a coupling model for the eco-watersheds of the Weihe River. The results of the Weihe River eco-watershed evaluation model and the coupled coordination degree evaluation model show that, from 2019 to 2021, both the gray correlation analysis weights and comprehensive weight evaluation show a yearly increasing trend; the evaluation results are in the eligible status and below; and the evaluation grade is in the fourth-level eco-watersheds and below. Based on the evaluation results of each dimension, when comparing the gray correlation analysis weights with the evaluation of the comprehensive weights, the latter align more closely with the actual Weihe River Watershed. When comparing the evaluation results of the Henan Weihe River Watershed with those of the Handan Weihe River Watershed, the latter's results, influenced by the scheduling of the Yuecheng Reservoir, are relatively better. Furthermore, in the evaluation of coupling coordination, the water resources subsystem is less coupled to other subsystems due to the 2021 flood. Water resources are crucial for the development of ecosystems and humanity. The Yellow River Basin (YRB), as an important ecological area in China, is facing significant challenges in ecological protection and high-quality development due to global climate change and intense human activities. In order to alleviate the water resources crisis in the YRB, it is necessary to calculate the resilience of the water resources system and identify the main influencing factors. This paper considered the factors of water resources, social economy, and ecological environment, then constructed an evaluation framework of the water resources system resilience (WRSR) from three aspects: resistance, restoration, and adaptability. Taking nine provinces along the YRB as a case study, the WRSR was measured by using the entropy weight TOPSIS model, and its driving factors were analyzed with Geographical Detectors (GD). The results showed that: (1) From 2010 to 2022, the WRSR in the Yellow River Basin and various provinces was showing a fluctuating increasing trend, in which Ningxia had the highest average WRSR (0.646), while Shanxi had the lowest (0.168). (2) From three dimensions, the development trends of resistance, restoration, and adaptability in the YRB and various provinces from 2010 to 2022 were relatively stable. Shandong's resistance level far exceeded that of other provinces, having the highest average resistance value (0.692), and Ningxia had the highest average value of restoration (0.827) and adaptability (0.711). However, Gansu had the lowest average value of resistance (0.119), Sichuan had the lowest average value of restoration (0.097), and Shandong had the lowest average value of adaptability (0.110). (3) In terms of impact factors, the development and utilization rate of water resources (C13) and the development and utilization rate of surface water resources (C14) in the restoration subsystem consistently ranked in the top two of influencing factors. Similarly, the water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP (C26) in the adaptability subsystem consistently ranked within the top ten. On the other hand, the natural population growth rate (C6) in the resistance subsystem, as well as the impact of ammonia nitrogen emissions (C9) and total precipitation (C2) in wastewater, exhibited an upward trend. This study aims to improve the level of water ecological civilization (WEC) in the urbanization process based on the data of prefecture-level cities in Jiangxi, China, from 2011 to 2020. This paper applies spatial analysis methods such as the natural fracture method, barycenter transfer model, and standard deviation ellipse method to explore the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of WEC and the impact of new urbanization (NU) on WEC. The NU pilot construction is further regarded as an exogenous impact, and the "net effect" of the NU pilot policy on WEC is tested. The results showed that (1) the spatial distribution pattern of the east–west polarization of WEC was broken, and a spatial distribution pattern of strong in the north and weak in the south was gradually formed. (2) NU contributes to improving the WEC level, among which population, digital, and green urbanization can significantly promote the WEC level, while economic urbanization impedes the improvement of the WEC. This conclusion is still valid following a series of robustness tests. (3) heterogeneity analysis showed that the impact of NU in improving the level of WEC is more evident in cities with scarce water resources, non-resource-based cities, and non-old industrial base cities after the implementation of NU planning. (4) NU's pilot policy can help improve the WEC level in the region and the WEC level in neighboring regions through the spillover effect of policy. Therefore, it is necessary to make use of the superimposed effect of multidimensional urbanization based on urban characteristics, implement differentiated policy, break administrative barriers, make use of the spatial spillover effect of pilot policy, and improve the WEC level. At the same time, the prediction of agricultural water demands against a background of climate change is urgently needed, while industrial water consumption is weakly correlated with climate change, an investigation of the statistical relationship between the two is needed. Thus, in this paper, future climate data from the BTH region under the scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 were generated using a statistical downscaling model, and then coupled with agricultural and industrial water demand prediction models to simulate and analyze the impact of climate change on the agricultural and industrial water demands, respectively. The results show that during the forecast period (2020–2035), the reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) growth rates in the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei areas under the RCP2.6 scenario are 1.438 mm·a−1, 1.393 mm·a−1 and 2.059 mm·a−1, respectively. Under the RCP4.5 scenario, they are 2.252 mm·a−1, 2.310 mm·a−1 and 2.827 mm·a−1, respectively. Under the RCP8.5 scenario, they are 3.123 mm·a−1, 2.310 mm·a−1 and 2.141 mm·a−1, respectively. Furthermore, under each climate scenario, the increase in evapotranspiration in the Hebei area is the largest, followed by that in the Tianjin area, and that in the Beijing area is the smallest. For water consumption per CNY 10,000 of industrial added value during the forecast period, under the three different climate scenarios, a downward trend is seen in the Beijing area, with rates of 0.158, 0.153 and 0.110, respectively, but in the Tianjin area, there is an upward trend, with an upward tendency in rates of 0.170, 0.087 and 0.071, and an upward trend in the Hebei area, with an upward tendency in rates of 0.254, 0.071 and 0.036, respectively. This study will help the BTH region to rationally allocate agricultural and industrial water against the background of future climate change, and strengthen the coordination and cooperation between the different regions to promote the healthy and sustainable development of the cities. Wetlands have a fundamental role in the maintenance and development of the global ecosystem and human health. Assessing the value of Ecosystem Services (ES) that wetlands provide is strictly related to environmental, economic, and social sustainability. This paper considers the Oristanese Reclamation District located in the Italian region of Sardinia, where the highest amount of water resources is used for irrigation. Moreover, the study area is characterized by the presence of numerous ponds and wetlands that are deeply interconnected with local agriculture, attracting a substantial number of tourists. This paper aims to evaluate the touristic value in the area by applying the travel cost method, a non-market evaluation method used to derive consumers' preferences. Through secondary data, we obtained a total estimate of economic benefits from the recreational uses of the site of approximately €1.25 Mln/year. The results provide support to decision-makers for improving management options while ensuring a tradeoff between the economic benefits derived from tourist activities and the conservation of the wetland area. Burst events in Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) pose a significant threat to the safety of water supply, leading people to focus on efficient methods for burst localization and prompt repair. This paper proposes a multi-stage burst localization method, which includes preliminary region determination and precise localization analysis. Based on the hydraulic model and spatio-temporal information, the effective sensor sequences and monitoring areas of the nodes are determined. In the first stage, the preliminary burst region is determined based on the monitoring region of sensors and the alarm sensors. In the second stage, localization metrics are used to analyze the dissimilarity degree between burst data from the hydraulic model and the monitoring data from the effective sensors at each node. This analysis helps identify candidate burst nodes and determine their localization priorities. The localization model is tested on the C-Town network to obtain comparative results. The method effectively reduces the burst region, minimizes the search region, and significantly improves the efficiency of burst localization. The Northwest Arid Region faces the most serious resource-based water shortage in China, with challenges from engineering-, structural- and management-based water shortages. This water scarcity critically limits the socio-economic development of the region. Rational allocation of scarce water resources to achieve sustainable development of the ecological environment and economy has become a key issue in water resources research in the Northwest Arid Region. South-Central Ningxia, part of the Northwest Arid Region, exemplifies these challenges. This paper examines the urban and rural water supply projects in South-Central Ningxia. The current scheduling scheme focuses primarily on the distribution of water demand, with inadequate attention paid to water-quality requirements. Localized exceedances of water-quality standards indicate the existing scheduling scheme has failed to effectively control water-quality issues while ensuring water quantity. This study is the first to systematically evaluate the impact of the South-Central Ningxia Water Supply Project on water quality alongside field surveys and data analysis and propose an optimized scheduling scheme that addresses both water quantity and quality needs. The main findings are as follows: 1. Overall water quality is good, except for consistently high total nitrogen levels. 2. The pressure characteristics of long-distance water pipelines during hydraulic transient processes are crucial for ensuring the safe, stable, and long-term operation of water transfer projects. This paper establishes a one-dimensional mathematical model based on sections of the Yinjiangjihuai long-distance water diversion project in China. The water supply requirements of the pipelines are categorized into two replenishment modes as follows: gravity supply and pump-pressurized water supply. The opening and closing strategies of the water pipelines under different flow conditions are simulated and analyzed to explore the hydraulic transient processes under various water supply modes. The transient variations of key hydraulic parameters during valve closure are clarified. Simulation results indicate that the water pipeline design is reasonable, meeting the water supply demands at relatively low Manning values and that it has the capability for long-term supply. Due to the excessive head provided by the pumps, pump-pressurized water supply and gravity supply modes cannot operate simultaneously. Under gravity supply mode, the minimum pressure in the downstream pipeline is relatively higher overall, while the maximum pressure in the upstream pipeline is relatively lower overall. In the pump-pressurized water supply mode, the safety and stability of the water supply can be ensured by adjusting the closing time of individual pumps and the interval time between adjacent pumps. Coal has remained the primary component of China's energy structure, and high-intensity extraction has continued in the central and western coal-producing regions of China. In contrast to the abundant coal resources, water resources have become extremely scarce in these regions, creating a conflict between coal resource extraction and water resource conservation. The coal mine underground reservoir (CMUR), as a typical technology for combined coal and water extraction and water-preserving coal mining, has been applied in numerous mines in central and western China. This effectively alleviates water resource shortages and achieves the goal of water resource conservation. The CMURs utilizes the goaf created by longwall mining as the water storage space. The reservoir dam structure comprises coal pillars, which serve as protective coal pillars in the mining area, and artificial dam structures that filled the gaps between these coal pillars. The stability of the dam structure under the complex stress effects of hydraulic coupling has been identified as the key to maintaining the safe operation of the CMUR. The mechanical properties, stress field, fracture field, and seepage field ("three fields") change mechanisms, as well as the research results on size optimization of coal pillar dams and artificial dams in CMURs, were systematically reviewed. The core content included the instability and failure mechanisms of dam structures under the comprehensive coupling effects of factors such as dry–wet cycles of mine water, long-term immersion, chemical effects of high-salinity water, dynamic and static loads, and cyclic loads. This paper is considered to have certain reference value for the study of the stability of dam structures in CMURs and to provide some guidance for the safe operation of CMURs. Urban water management faces new challenges due to the rise of digital solutions and abundant data, leading to the development of data-centric tools for decision-making in global water utilities, with AI technologies poised to become a key trend in the sector. This paper proposes a novel methodology for optimal sensor placement aimed at supporting the creation of a digital twin for water infrastructure. A significant innovation in this study is the creation of a metamodel to estimate pressure at consumption nodes in a water supply system. This metamodel guides the optimal sensor configuration by minimizing the difference between estimated and observed pressures. Our methodology was tested on a synthetic case study, showing accurate results. The estimated pressures at each network node exhibited low error and high accuracy across all sensor configurations tested, highlighting the potential for future development of a digital twin for water distribution systems. This paper assessed and evaluated the river and groundwater quality of five major catchments in the Mzimvubu to Tsitsikamma Water Management Area (WMA7). The river assessment and evaluation considered the present state maximum, minimum and mean seasonal values of physiochemical parameters (EC, NO3 + NO2, Cl, pH, NH4-N, PO4-P and Mg). The study was able to successfully make use of statistical analysis and a water quality index in order to explain seven-year trends and the present state of all five catchments within the study area. The statistical analysis results showed that water quality parameters such as PO4, NH4 and NO3 + NO2 were not complying with the South African Water Quality Guidelines (SAWQG) limits, suggesting that the study area was impacted by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, sewage works, etc. The application of WQI showed that the Gamtoos catchment was in a good water quality state (49.71) while the other four catchments were in a poor to very poor state, according to the WQI classification. Based on the groundwater quality assessment, the physicochemical parameters (NH4, EC, Ca, NO3 + NO2, pH, Na, Cl, Mg, F, K, SO4 and CaCO3) were selected and the main parameters of concern were EC (salinity), NO3 + NO2 and SO4. However, groundwater assessment revealed that groundwater quality was chemically suitable for drinking purposes in most parts of the study area. Therefore, the study recommended resource-directed measures to improve surface and groundwater resource protection, especially in areas where surface and groundwater quality for other uses remains a challenge.
