The article discusses efforts by Japanese businesses to reduce what is referred to as the gender gap by hiring and promoting women as of the early 21st century. The article cites statistics from the group the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to state that a higher percentage of women are employed in Japan than in the U.S. and Europe. It also states that Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe promoted gender equality in the workplace.
