The article discusses uncertainty surrounding the hundreds of sites in the U.S. where research on nuclear weapons and atomic energy took place during the 1940s. At some locations including a building at the University of California at Berkeley, nuclear residue has persisted for decades. The U.S. government lacks the addresses for dozens of sites, and the Energy Department does not always have sufficient documentation to determine whether a site needs decontamination.
