Humans use the direction of eye gaze and facial identity to make important social judgments. We carried out the first measurements of spatial frequency (SF) tuning for judgments of eye gaze, and compared SF tuning for judgments of facial identity and eye gaze. In Experiment 1, participants discriminated between leftward and rightward shifts of gaze, or between two male faces or two female faces. Faces were masked with visual noise that blocked one of 10 SF bands. For each task and masking SF, we measured contrast thresholds for human observers, and used an ideal observer to measure the amount of visual information available to perform the task. As in previous research, low to mid SFs were most important for judgments of facial identity. Mid to high SFs were most important for judgments of eye gaze, and the highest SF important for these judgments was higher than that for identity. In Experiment 2, participants discriminated horizontal and vertical shifts of gaze. The highest SF important for judgments of gaze did not differ between the horizontal and vertical axes. However, SFs above and below this value were more important for judgments of vertical shifts of gaze than for horizontal shifts of gaze. These results suggest that the visual system relies on higher SFs for judgments of eye gaze than for judgments of facial identity, and that SF tuning is broader for judgments of vertical shifts of gaze than for horizontal shifts of gaze., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. It is unclear whether reported deficits in face processing in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) can be explained by deficits in perceptual face coding mechanisms. In the current study, we examined whether adults with ASD showed evidence of norm-based opponent coding of facial identity, a perceptual process underlying the recognition of facial identity in typical adults. We began with an original face and an averaged face and then created an anti-face that differed from the averaged face in the opposite direction from the original face by a small amount (near adaptor) or a large amount (far adaptor). To test for norm-based coding, we adapted participants on different trials to the near versus far adaptor, then asked them to judge the identity of the averaged face. We varied the size of the test and adapting faces in order to reduce any contribution of low-level adaptation. Consistent with the predictions of norm-based coding, high functioning adults with ASD (n = 27) and matched typical participants (n = 28) showed identity aftereffects that were larger for the far than near adaptor. Unlike results with children with ASD, the strength of the aftereffects were similar in the two groups. Adults use the orientation of people's heads as a cue to the focus of their attention. We examined developmental changes in mechanisms underlying sensitivity to head orientation during childhood. Eight-, 10-, 12-year-olds, and adults were adapted to a frontal face view or a 20° left or right side view before judging the orientation of a face at or near frontal. After frontal adaptation, there were no age differences in judgments of head orientation. However, after adaptation to a 20° left or right side view, aftereffects were larger and sensitivity to head orientation was lower in 8- and 10-year-olds than in adults, with no difference between 12-year-olds and adults. A computational model indicates that these results can be modeled as a consequence of decreasing neural tuning bandwidths and decreasing additive internal noise during childhood, and/or as a consequence of increasing inhibition during childhood. These results provide the first evidence that neural mechanisms underlying sensitivity to head orientation undergo considerable refinement during childhood., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. We investigated the efficacy of training adults to recognize full spectrum inverted faces presented with different viewpoints. To examine the role of different spatial frequencies in any learning, we also used high-pass filtered faces that preserved featural information and low-pass filtered faces that severely reduced that featural information. Although all groups got faster over the 2 days of training, there was more improvement in accuracy for the group exposed to full spectrum faces than in the two groups exposed to filtered faces, both of which improved more modestly and only when the same faces were shown on the 2 days of training. For the group exposed to the full spectrum range and, to a lesser extent, for those exposed to high frequency faces, training generalized to a new set of full spectrum faces of a different size in a different task, but did not lead to evidence of holistic processing or improved sensitivity to feature shape or spacing in inverted faces. Overall these results demonstrate that only 2h of practice in recognizing full-spectrum inverted faces presented from multiple points of view is sufficient to improve recognition of the trained faces and to generalize to novel instances. We measured contrast thresholds for the identification of faces and facial expressions as a function of the center spatial frequency of narrow-band additive noise. In adults, masking of mid spatial frequencies (11-16c/fw) caused the largest elevation in contrast threshold (Experiment 1). Ideal observer analysis revealed that adults were equally sensitive to available information at low and mid spatial frequencies, both of which they used more efficiently than high spatial frequencies. The drop-off of sensitivity at high spatial frequencies began at a lower spatial frequency for recognizing facial identity than for recognizing facial expression. As a result, the critical band was higher for expression than for identity. The critical band for both identity and expression shifted to slightly lower values as distance increased (Experiment 2), a pattern indicating only partial scale invariance. Children aged 10 and 14 years showed similar tuning but needed more contrast (Experiment 3). We tested adults and children aged 7 and 14 on the ability to integrate contour elements across variations in the collinearity of the target elements, their spatial proximity, and the relative spacing of the target elements to the background noise elements (Delta). When collinearity was high, the strength of integration for adults was largely independent of spatial proximity and varied only with Delta. It was only when collinearity was less reliable because the orientation of the elements was randomly jittered that spatial proximity began to influence adults' integration. These patterns correspond well to the probability that real-world contours compose a single object: collinear elements are more likely to reflect parts of a real object and adults integrate them easily regardless of the proximity among those collinear elements. The results from children demonstrate a gradual improvement of contour integration throughout childhood and the slow development of sensitivity to the statistics of natural scenes. Unlike adults, integration in children was limited by spatial proximity regardless of collinearity and one strong cue did not compensate for the other. We compared the sensitivity of adults and children aged 3-10 years to first- and second-order motion and form. For first-order stimuli, at all ages sensitivity was better for motion than form, and motion thresholds were better at 6 Hz than at 1.5 Hz. For second-order stimuli, at all ages sensitivity was better for form than motion, and motion thresholds were better at 0.25 cyc/deg than at 1 cyc/deg. Thresholds became adult-like later for motion than for form and later for first-order than second-order stimuli. For first-order stimuli, the changes with age were larger and more protracted.

To compare the effects of early monocular versus early binocular deprivation on the perception of global form, we assessed sensitivity to global concentric structure in Glass patterns with varying ratios of paired signal dots to noise dots. Children who had been deprived by dense congenital cataracts in one (n=10) or both (n=8) eyes performed significantly worse than comparably aged children without eye problems. Consistent with previous results on sensitivity to global motion [Vision Research 42 (2002) 169], thresholds in the deprived eyes were significantly better after monocular deprivation than after binocular deprivation of comparable duration, even when there had been little patching of the nondeprived eye after monocular deprivation. Together, the results indicate that the competitive interactions between a deprived and nondeprived eye evident in the primary visual cortex can co-occur with complementary interactions in extrastriate cortex that enable a relative sparing of some visual functions after early monocular deprivation.

We used random-dot kinematograms to compare the effects of early monocular versus early binocular deprivation on the development of the perception of the direction of global motion. Patients had been visually deprived by a cataract in one or both eyes from birth or later after a history of normal visual experience. The discrimination of direction of global motion was significantly impaired after early visual deprivation. Surprisingly, impairments were significantly worse after early binocular deprivation than after early monocular deprivation, and the sensitive period was very short. The unexpectedly good results after monocular deprivation suggest that the higher centers involved in the integration of global motion profit from input to the nondeprived eye. These findings suggest that beyond the primary visual cortex, competitive interactions between the eyes can give way to collaborative interactions that enable a relative sparing of some visual functions after monocular deprivation.

Using the method of limits, we measured spatial and temporal vision in 15 patients, aged 4-28 years, who had been monocularly deprived of patterned visual input during infancy by a dense cataract. All patients showed losses in both spatial and temporal vision, with greater losses in spatial than in temporal vision. Losses were smaller when there had been more patching of the non-deprived eye. The results indicate that visual deprivation has smaller effects on the neural mechanisms mediating temporal vision than on those mediating spatial vision.

We quantified OKN asymmetry in 140 normal infants, 3-24 months old, by varying spatial frequency to determine OKN acuity for temporal-to-nasal (T-N) versus nasal-to-temporal (N-T) motion. At all ages, OKN acuity was asymmetrical (better for T-N than for N-T motion) but the size of the asymmetry decreased from 3.2 to 0.7 octaves between 3-24 months, primarily because of improvements in OKN acuity for N-T motion. The results suggest that immaturities in the cortical pathways involved in OKN persist until at least 2 years of age.

Using the method of limits, we measured spatial and temporal vision in 13 children who had been deprived of patterned visual input during infancy until they were treated for dense central cataracts in both eyes. Spatial vision was assessed with vertical sine-wave gratings, and temporal vision was assessed with an unpatterned luminance field sinusoidally modulated over time. Under these testing conditions, spatial contrast sensitivity at low and medium spatial frequencies (0.33-2 c deg-1) was within normal limits, but sensitivity at higher spatial frequencies and grating acuity were reduced on average by 1.3 and 0.5 log units, respectively. Temporal vision was affected less severely, with losses in sensitivity only for low temporal frequencies (5 and 10 Hz), which averaged 0.4 log units. Thus, spatial and temporal vision are likely mediated by different neural mechanisms, that are differentially affected by deprivation.

Using the method of limits, we measured the development of spatial and temporal vision beginning at 4 years of age. Participants were adults, and children aged 4, 5, 6, and 7 years (n = 24 per age). Spatial vision was assessed with vertical sine-wave gratings, and temporal vision was assessed with an unpatterned luminance field sinusoidally modulated over time. Under these testing conditions, spatial contrast sensitivity at every frequency increased by at least 0.5 log units between 4 and 7 years of age, at which point it was adult-like. Grating acuity reached adult values at 6 years of age. Temporal vision was more mature: at 4 years of age temporal contrast sensitivity at higher temporal frequencies (20 and 30 Hz) and critical flicker fusion frequency were already adult-like. Sensitivity at lower temporal frequencies (5 and 10 Hz) increased by 0.25 log units after the age of 4 to reach adult levels at age 7. The results suggest that temporal vision matures more rapidly than spatial vision during childhood. Thus, spatial and temporal vision are likely mediated by different underlying neural mechanisms that mature at different rates.

We used static perimetry to measure the development of the monocular visual field during infancy. Infants from birth to 6 months of age, and adults, were shown a 3 or 6 degrees flashing light at various locations between 15 and 120 degrees in the temporal and nasal visual fields. We assumed that subjects could see a light if they moved their eyes toward it more often than they looked in the same direction on blank control trials. For both the 3 and 6 degrees lights, the visual field expanded with age from the center out, and development in the nasal visual field lagged behind development in the temporal visual field. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.

We used an habituation procedure to explore newborns' ability to detect successive changes in luminance and based on those data, their ability to discriminate chromatic from achromatic stimuli. Newborns were very insensitive to successive changes in luminance: after habituating to a white square of given luminance, they showed no evidence of dishabituating when the luminance of the square increased or decreased by 0.37 log cd/m2, but dishabituated only to the next larger difference of 0.53 log cd/m2. Moreover, after newborns were habituated to a series of white squares that varied widely in luminance, they did not react when the luminance of the square was increased as much as 0.71 log cd/m2. In the color vision experiments, infants were habituated to a series of white squares of varying luminance and then tested with a chromatic square and with a white square of novel luminance. The size of the squares was also varied. The results showed that newborns discriminated 8 deg red (lambda peak = 650 nm) and 16 deg green (lambda peak = 540 nm) squares from white but required a larger stimulus (16 deg) to demonstrate the discrimination of yellow (lambda peak = 585 nm) from white. In addition, newborns showed no evidence of discriminating a 32 deg blue (lambda peak = 470 nm) square from white. Thus, although the results imply that newborns are at least dichromats, they also show that their color vision mechanisms are immature, particularly those operating in the blue and yellow spectral regions.

We compared infants' ability to detect single lines of varying width in the temporal and nasal visual fields. The smallest lines detected by 1-month-olds at 20 degrees in the nasal visual field were more than eight times wider than those detected at 30 degrees in the temporal visual field. In contrast, 2-month-olds detected smaller lines at 20 degrees in the nasal visual field than at 30 degrees in the temporal visual field. Converging evidence suggests that the observed improvement between 1 and 2 months in detection in the nasal visual field reflects the maturation of a projection from the retina through the visual cortex to the superior colliculus.

We tested the monocular visual field of 16 kittens aged 13-56 days, by observing their unreinforced visual orienting. At 13-14 days the kittens oriented toward stimuli out of 45 degrees in the nasal field. Until 7-8 weeks, performance was significantly poorer in the nasal field than in the temporal field. This delayed development of the nasal field may be related to the relatively slow development of the uncrossed retino-geniculate projection and of the pathway through the visual cortex to the superior colliculus.
