This article discusses the four different experience realms of Behavioral Processes and the configuration patterns of English and Vietnamese Behavioral clauses on the account of lexicogrammatical structures and ideational meanings. Then the study presents the similarities and differences in experience realms of Behavioral Processes and the configuration patterns of Behavioral clauses between the two languages. Qualitative and contrastive methods were adopted in this study to analyze 657 English and 602 Vietnamese Behavioral clauses from fourteen English and twenty three Vietnamese short stories and novels in order to demonstrate the features of behavioral realms and their functional realization. Attention has been paid to interpreting a wide range of lexicogrammatical choices as well as various strands of functions realizing behavioral realms. The study reveals four realms of behavior namely Semiotic, Social, Biological and Physical. It also presents seven associated configuration patterns in English and Vietnamese. The study reveals that the distinctive nature of the two languages (English-as a synthetic language and Vietnamese-as an analytic language) brings about some differences in the realization of English and Vietnamese Behavioral clauses. The concepts of ideational and interpersonal metaphor are introduced in Halliday's An Introduction into Functional Grammar (1985) in which he differentiates his newly-identified grammatical metaphor from "figures of speech" metaphor. This article is devoted to interpreting the three major types of typical patterns of the ideational grammar of behavioral clauses in English and Vietnamese within the framework elaborated by Halliday and Matthiessen (2000, 2004); Martin et al. (1997) as well as making comparisons of these patterns in the two languages. Attention has been paid to describing a wide range of constructions and shift patterns of ideational metaphor (transitivity metaphor) and the grammatical variants between congruent and incongruent forms applying to transitivity configurations in English and Vietnamese behavioral clauses. The analysis of characteristics of ideational metaphor in behavioral clauses is conducted on five English and five Vietnamese novels and short stories from the 19th century to present. This article discusses the characteristics of circumstances in behavioral clauses in English and Vietnamese in terms of lexicogrammatical structures and ideational meanings as well as making comparisons of them. Attention has been paid to interpreting a wide range of lexicogrammatical choices as well as various strands of function of circumstances realized by these choices. Each type of circumstances is interpreted (i) structurally, that is, according to rank, and (ii) semantically, according to type. Due to the lexical and grammatical differences between English and Vietnamese, circumstantial elements that are commonly realized by prepositional phrases in English are more likely to be realized by nouns or nominal groups in Vietnamese. As compared with English circumstances, Vietnamese circumstances are less likely to be embedded or encoded in behavioral processes in the clause. Analysis of circumstance characteristics is conducted on twelve English and Vietnamese short stories and novels from the 19th century to present in order to demonstrate the use of circumstances. In the conclusion, we pointed out the new results from our investigation and we will also suggest some practical applications such as the efficient approaches to this domain, solutions to translation matters and language teaching and learning.
