Here a comprehensive 3-D wheel-rail rolling contact finite element model was developed to investigate the influence of wheel-rail material properties on the dynamic wheel-rail interaction. The wheel-rail contact responses induced by two typical wheel tread defects (i.e. wheel flat and tread spalling) were discussed and compared to the responses of perfect wheel in this work. The dynamic wheel-rail responses of three typical material models involved (i.e. rigid, elastic, and elastic-plastic models) were investigated in terms of contact force, contact pressure/stress, and wheel/rail degradation. Furthermore, the strain rate levels during wheel-rail rolling contact at various train speeds were estimated with emphasis on the elastic-plastic model, which was helpful for determining strain rate range of wheel/rail material property tests. Finally, the influences of strain rate effect and initial fatigue damage of wheel/rail materials on dynamic wheel-rail responses were discussed. These results illustrated that the rigid model grossly overestimated wheel-rail impact force caused by wheel tread defects, while the elastic model overestimated wheel-rail contact pressure/stress, damage index, and frictional work. The strain rate effect could significantly increase Mises stress and inhibit plastic deformation of wheel-rail system, while the initial fatigue damage would reduce Mises stress and aggravate plastic deformation. A three-dimensional wheel–rail rolling contact model (3D WRRCM) developed using the explicit finite element method (FEM) can be used to analyze the dynamic performances of wheelsets and tracks while considering the wheelset rotation and translation, as well as the real wheel–rail contact mechanism. When using the FEM with static initialisation (traditional model), the first step is to calculate the static wheel–rail displacement, strain, and stress when applying axle loading on the wheel and neglecting the wheelset rotation and translation. Then, using these results as the initial conditions, the dynamic wheel–rail displacement, strain, and stress are calculated while considering the wheelset rotation and translation by adopting the explicit dynamic solution method. However, obtaining a solution using this traditional method is time consuming, and the solution can be divergent because of the impulse produced by the suddenly increasing wheelset rotation when proceeding from the initial condition to the dynamic. The optimised method developed in this study can solve this problem. A comparison of the results from the traditional and optimised methods reveals that in the optimised method, the softer initial impulse effectively shortens the track length needed for the calculation and improves the solution efficiency. The wheel-rail rolling contact finite element model has been generally considered to be a better choice for solving the high-frequency wheel-rail responses and local stress/strain states, compared to the traditional multi-body dynamics model. However, some thorny issues in the wheel-rail finite element analysis need to be solved or avoided, such as difficulties in geometry modelling especially for describing those multiple irregular wheel tread defects, possible computation termination by mesh distortion, and the balance between the computational efficiency and accuracy. Thus, an innovative computational method was proposed in this study, to transform the geometric irregularities induced by wheel out-of-roundness (wheel flat, tread spalling and wheel polygonization) to the randomly irregular displacement excitation of the wheel-rail contact, where the randomisation of the size, shape and distribution of wheel tread defects were considered. Based on geometrical relationships of the wheel-rail contact, the formulas of the wheel-rail contact displacement irregularity caused by various wheel tread defects, which was equivalent to the corresponding wheel-rail geometrical irregularity, were derived. And then the randomly irregular wheel-rail displacement satisfied to several various random distribution functions were generated by pseudo-random number sequence. To improve the understanding of wheel/rail contact behaviour and damage mechanisms in turnouts, the 3D explicit finite element model of a wheelset rolling over a switch is introduced. This takes into account the arbitrary geometrical profile of the wheel-rail system, the relative motion between switch/stock rail, the nonlinear materials and actual moving postures of the wheelset. Precise frictional rolling contact solutions and dynamic response, including contact stress, surface shear stress, microslip, roll angle and lateral displacement, are all studied to obtain a better understanding of the wheel-rail frictional rolling contact behaviour in the switch panel. The simulated results are then verified through field tests on the Qingdao-Jinan line. The results indicate that the proposed explicit finite element method can be an efficient tool for solving the problems of frictional rolling contact behaviour and damage mechanism in switch panels. A comprehensive dynamic finite-element simulation method was proposed to study the wheel–rail impact response induced by a single wheel flat based on a 3-D rolling contact model, where the influences of the structural inertia, strain rate effect of wheel–rail materials and thermal stress due to the wheel–rail sliding friction were considered. Four different initial conditions (i.e. pure mechanical loading plus rate-independent, pure mechanical loading plus rate-dependent, thermo-mechanical loading plus rate-independent, and thermo-mechanical loading plus rate-dependent) were involved into explore the corresponding impact responses in term of the vertical impact force, von-Mises equivalent stress, equivalent plastic strain and shear stress. Influences of train speed, flat length and axle load on the flat-induced wheel–rail impact response were discussed, respectively. The results indicate that the maximum thermal stresses are occurred on the tread of the wheel and on the top surface of the middle rail; the strain rate hardening effect contributes to elevate the von-Mises equivalent stress and restrain the plastic deformation; and the initial thermal stress due to the sliding friction will aggravate the plastic deformation of wheel and rail. Besides, the wheel–rail impact responses (i.e. impact force, von-Mises equivalent stress, equivalent plastic strain, and XY shear stress) induced by a flat are sensitive to the train speed, flat length and axle load. A 3-D explicit finite element model is developed to investigate the transient wheel–rail rolling contact in the presence of rail contamination or short low adhesion zones (LAZs). A transient analysis is required because the wheel passes by a short LAZ very quickly, especially at high speeds. A surface-to-surface contact algorithm (by the penalty method) is employed to solve the frictional rolling contact between the wheel and the rail meshed by solid elements. The LAZ is simulated by a varying coefficient of friction along the rail. Different traction efforts and action of the traction control system triggered by the LAZ are simulated by applying a time-dependent driving torque to the wheel axle. Structural flexibilities of the vehicle–track system are considered properly. Analysis focuses on the contact forces, creepage, contact stresses and the derived frictional work and plastic deformation. It is found that the longitudinal contact force and the maximum surface shear stress in the contact patch become obviously lower in the LAZ and much higher as the wheel re-enters the dry rail section. Consequently, a higher wear rate and larger plastic flow are expected at the location where the dry contact starts to be rebuilt. In other words, contact surface damages such as wheel flats and rail burns may come into being because of the LAZ. Length of the LAZ, the traction level, etc. are varied. The stresses between railway wheels and rails can be computed using different types of contact models: simplified methods, half-space-based boundary element approaches and finite element models. For conformal contact situations, particularly the contact between flange root and rail gauge corner, none of these models work satisfactorily. Finite element methods are too slow, half-space approaches ignore the effects of conformality, and simplified approaches schematise the elasticity of the material even further. This paper presents a thorough investigation of the conformal wheel–rail rolling contact problem. We use CONTACT's boundary element approach together with numerical influence coefficients, that are computed using the finite element approach. The resulting method is fast and detailed and can be embedded into vehicle system dynamics simulation. The results indicate that the contact area is longer and narrower, with smaller area and reduced stiffness, than is predicted by the half-space approach. The predicted maximum pressures are increased by 30%. Finally the longitudinal and lateral forces changed up to 15% of the Coulomb maximum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are two aims for the second part of this paper: verifying the theory presented in the first part through parameter variation and comparison between simulation and experiment, and to study the effect of the belt structure on the cornering properties of radial tyres. Research has been carried out with a passenger car radial tyre and two different kinds of truck or bus radial tyres using both simulation and experiment. This second part of the paper shows that belt structure plays an important role in the generation of tyre forces and moments in addition to the effects of the tread stiffness and friction coefficients. The theory and method presented in this paper opens a new robust way to predict the tyre forces and moments from the tyre design and provides a reliable model for a generation mechanism. A method is described which is an extension of rolling contact models with respect to plasticity. This new method, which is an extension of the STRIPES semi-Hertzian (SH) model, has been implemented in a multi-body-system (MBS) package and does not result in a longer execution time than the STRIPES SH model [J.B. Ayasse and H. Chollet, Determination of the wheel–rail contact patch in semi-Hertzian conditions, Veh. Syst. Dyn. 43(3) (2005), pp. 161–172]. High speed of computation is obtained by some hypotheses about the plastic law, the shape of stresses, the locus of the maximum stress and the slip. Plasticity does not change the vehicle behaviour but there is a need for an extension of rolling contact models with respect to plasticity as far as fatigue analysis of rail is concerned: rolling contact fatigue may be addressed via the finite element method (FEM) including material non-linearities, where loads are the contact stresses provided by the post-processing of MBS results [K. Dang Van, M.H. Maitournam, Z. Moumni, and F. Roger, A comprehensive approach for modeling fatigue and fracture of rails, Eng. Fract. Mech. 76 (2009), pp. 2626–2636]. In STRIPES, like in other MBS models, contact stresses may exceed the plastic yield criterion, leading to wrong results in the subsequent FEM analysis. With the proposed method, contact stresses are kept consistent with a perfect plastic law, avoiding these problems. The method is benchmarked versus non-linear FEM in Hertzian geometries. As a consequence of taking plasticity into account, contact patch area is bigger than the elastic one. In accordance with FEM results, a different ellipse aspect ratio than the one predicted by Hertz theory was also found and finally pressure does not exceed the threshold prescribed by the plastic law. The method also provides more exact results with non-Hertzian geometries. The new approach is finally compared with non-linear FEM in a tangent case with a unidirectional load and a complete slip: when plasticity is taken into account, and for large adhesion values, friction forces have an influence on the size of the contact patch. Squats have become a major problem in the track of many railways. In the quest for the root causes of squats, it is observed that they are occasionally found at locations of track stiffness changes such as at fish-plated insulated joints and at switches and crossings. Obviously, there should be other factors in the track, which, together with the stiffness change, have played important roles otherwise there will be squats at all such locations. A validated hybrid multibody-finite element model of vehicle-track vertical interaction is extended to simulate the frictional dynamic rolling contact at a fish-plated insulated joint in order to identify such factors. Elastic-plastic rail material property is taken into account. It is found that it is track short defect in the preload condition of the bolts and the contact between the fishplates and the rail head, which together with the stiffness change, causes large normal and longitudinal contact force variation at the fishplate end so that differential wear and differential plastic deformation may accumulate at a fixed location. With proper wavelength, the accumulated rail top geometry deviation may grow into a squat. The significance of the present work lies in that other track short defects such as damaged and improper railpads and fastening, and ballast voids may also have such effects, which may be responsible for a large portion of the many squats in the tracks.
