Pneumococcal vaccination (PV) is effective in preventing vaccine-type pneumococcal diseases. This study investigated the changes in PV uptake and its determinants before, during, and after the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic among community-living older adults aged ≥65 years in Hong Kong, China. Three rounds of random telephone surveys were conducted every two years from May 2019 to October 2023. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to examine the between-round differences in PV uptake rate and factors associated with PV uptake in each round. This study included 1563 participants. The standardized PV uptake rate in Round 1, 2, and 3 was 17.3%, 28.3%, and 35.5%, respectively. A significant difference in the PV uptake rate was found between Rounds 2 and 1 ( p = 0.02), but not between Rounds 3 and 2 ( p = 0.98). Perceived barriers, cue to action and self-efficacy, were significant determinants of PV uptake in all rounds. Perceived benefits were significant determinants of PV uptake in the first and second rounds, but not in the third round. Continuous monitoring of PV uptake and its determinants, and evaluating and adjusting the PV program, might contribute to the success of such a vaccination program in the post-pandemic era.

During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, seasonal influenza remained a significant health threat for older adults. Seasonal influenza vaccination (SIV) is highly effective and safe for older adults. This study investigated the associations of COVID-19 vaccination, perceptions related to COVID-19 and SIV, with the behavioural intention to receive SIV among older adults in Hong Kong, China. A random telephone survey was conducted among 440 community-dwelling Hong Kong residents aged 65 years or above, between November 2021 and January 2022. Among the participants, 55.7% intended to receive SIV in the next year. After adjustment for significant background characteristics, concern about whether SIV and COVID-19 vaccination would negatively affect each other was associated with a lower intention to receive SIV, while a perceived higher risk of co-infection with COVID-19 and seasonal influenza was positively associated with the dependent variable. In addition, the perceived severe consequences of seasonal influenza, perceived benefits of SIV, received cues to action from doctors and participants' family members or friends, and the perception that more older people would receive SIV was associated with a higher behavioural intention. Future programmes promoting SIV among older adults should modify perceptions related to COVID-19 vaccination and SIV at the same time.

Vaccination against COVID-19 remains one of the ultimate solutions to the ongoing pandemic. This study examined and compared the completion of primary COVID-19 vaccination series and associated factors in the slum and estate communities of Uganda. This was a cross-sectional survey conducted among 1025 slum and estate residents. Logistic regression models were fitted. Of the 1025 participants, 511 were slum residents and 514 were estate residents. Completion of COVID-19 vaccination was 43.8% in the slum community and 39.9% in the estate community ( p = 0.03). Having more knowledge about COVID-19 was positively associated with completing COVID-19 vaccination in both communities. Perceived benefits and cues to action also had a positive association, but only among the slum residents. However, perceiving people infected with COVID-19 as having a high death rate, perceived barriers such as serious side effects and long distances, and depressive symptoms had negative associations with vaccine uptake among the slum community, but not in the estate community. Addressing barriers to vaccination, strengthening and utilizing the various cues to action, engagement of religious and cultural leaders, and continued community education and sensitization tailored to the needs of each community are potentially vital strategies in raising vaccination rates. Consideration of socioeconomic impact-alleviation strategies, especially among the urban poor, would also be beneficial.

Uptake of a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine is effective in preventing infection and severe consequences caused by COVID-19. The present study examined the effects of negative attitudes towards vaccination in general and trust in government on uptake of a COVID-19 booster dose, as well as the moderating role of psychological reactance to pro-vaccination messages in Hong Kong. An observational prospective cohort study using online survey was conducted among 264 adults. Findings showed that, after adjustment for significant background characteristics, negative attitudes towards vaccination in general negatively predicted uptake of a booster dose, and trust in government positively predicted uptake of a booster dose. In addition, the association between negative attitudes towards vaccination in general and uptake of a booster dose was weaker among those who reported a higher level of psychological reactance. The present study highlighted the importance of improving attitudes towards vaccination in general especially among those who are not experiencing psychological reactance, and building trust in government. This study also suggested that interventions aimed at improving attitudes towards vaccination in general should seek to avoid psychological reactance, and special attention should be given to people who are experiencing psychological reactance to pro-vaccination messages., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways of controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. However, vaccine hesitancy is prevalent, and relatively few studies have explored how variables related to personal and external motives have affected the intention to vaccinate. The present study investigated the association between perceived personal benefits, variables reflecting external motives (i.e., perceived social benefits, collectivism, and national pride) and intention to receive COVID-19 vaccination among university students in China. The interaction between perceived personal benefits and the three factors reflecting external motives on intention to receive COVID-19 vaccination was also examined. A total of 6922 university students from five provinces of China completed a cross-sectional survey. Results showed that adjusting for significant background variables, perceived personal benefits, perceived social benefits, collectivism, and national pride were all significant factors of intention to receive COVID-19 vaccination. Results from interaction analyses also showed that the association between perceived personal benefits and COVID-19 vaccination intention was stronger among those with lower levels of national pride. Findings highlighted the important role of self-directed interest and external motives in promoting uptake of COVID-19 vaccination.
