Guided wave based defects inspection is very promising in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive testing (NDT) due to its less dissipation and thus long distance coverage. In comparison with the widely used Lamb waves, shear horizontal (SH) waves are relatively simple but less investigated probably due to the traditional notion that SH waves were usually excited by electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT). In this work, we proposed a tunable method to excite single-mode bidirectional SH waves in plates using antiparallel thickness-shear (d15) piezoelectric strips (APS). The proposed SH wave driving mechanism here is similar to that by using the periodic permanent magnetics (PPM) based EMAT with the period of strips equal to half of the wavelength. Both finite element simulations and experiments were conducted to validate this transducer in excitation of bidirectional SH waves. Results show that the Lamb waves excited by single piezoelectric strip can be suppressed very well. The radiation angle of the excited bidirectional SH wave can be reduced by extending the strip length, increasing the driving frequency or using more strips. Moreover, the APS transducer can selectively excite SH1 wave and suppress the SH0 wave at 174 kHz and 273 kHz in a 10 mm-thick aluminum plate. Considering its simple structure, flexible design and low excitation energy, the APS SH wave transducer is expected to be widely used in near future.

A non-paraxial multi-Gaussian beam (NMGB) model is proposed for Leaky Rayleigh Waves (LRWs) generated by a focused immersion transducer at oblique incidence. Using the NMGB model, the velocity fields are calculated and compared with the corresponding results obtained by the paraxial multi-Gaussian beam (MGB) model and the more exact Rayleigh-Sommerfeld integral (RSI) model. Numerical results show that the LRW beam behavior obtained using the NMGB model agrees well with that using the RSI model, but the NMGB model is much more efficient. Moreover the NMGB model overcomes the accuracy limitation of the MGB model. Good agreement between the NMGB model and experimental measurements for both on-axis and off-axis fields is obtained when an attenuation coefficient is introduced. In addition, this model can be used to measure the attenuation coefficient with consideration of the diffraction attenuation. It is observed that the attenuation coefficient of the LRW will increase when the acoustic impendence differences between the solid and fluid decrease. The NMGB model described in this article provides an efficient tool for calculating the velocity fields of the LRW and is therefore significant for practical applications of ultrasonic measurements.

The ultrasonic tomography is an important tool in nondestructive evaluation of concrete structures. It is usual to consider in ultrasonic reconstruction that the mechanical waves only propagate in straight-lines between the transmitter and the receiver transducers, corresponding to the behavior in a homogenous material. In a concrete specimen, however, mechanical waves may deviate from an internal flaw, which affects the resulting tomograms. In this study, the ray tracing technique based on the Network Theory, which allows to consider waves not travelling in a straight-line, was incorporated into the tomography processing. Experimental tests were carried out on concrete specimens with different internal flaws. The results indicated the importance of using the ray tracing technique to properly detect the size and the shape of internal flaws, improving the obtained tomograms. All the necessary algorithms for the application of the Network Theory were presented.

Research related to acoustic/ultrasonic guided wave testing in wood is still at an early stage. This paper describes the first study to perform ultrasonic guided wave measurements in a wooden rod using arrays of shear transducers. Enhancement of either longitudinal L(0,1) or torsional T(0,1) wave modes and suppression of other modes was able to be achieved using these arrays. At low frequencies, it was found that the L(0,1) wave mode had a similar speed to that obtained using the traditional resonance and time of flight methods. The torsional T(0,1) wave mode has not been used before for non-destructive testing of wood. Since it is non-dispersive, it would appear to be suitable for wood property estimation and structural health monitoring of wooden structures. These results indicate that ultrasonic guided wave testing techniques have strong potential to be used to provide improved measurement of wood properties and structural health monitoring of wooden structures.

Acoustic wave propagation in ultrasonic flow measurements is typically assumed to be linear and reciprocal. However, if the transmitting transducer generates a sufficiently high pressure, nonlinear wave propagation effects become significant. In flow measurements, this would translate into more information to estimate the flow and therefore a higher precision relative to the linear case. In this work, we investigate how the generated harmonics can be used to measure flow. Measurements in a custom-made flow loop and simulations using the Khokhlov–Zabolotskaya–Kuznetsov (KZK) equation will show that the second harmonic component provides similar transit time differences to those obtained from the fundamental component, their linear combination results in more precise flow measurements compared to the estimations with the fundamental component alone.

Zero Group Velocity (ZGV) modes are peculiar guided waves that can exist in elastic plates or cylinders, and have proved to be very sensitive tools in characterizing materials or thickness variations with sub-percent accuracy at space resolutions of about the plate thickness. In this article we show theoretically and experimentally how such a mode can be generated as the sum-frequency interaction of two high amplitude primary waves, and then serve as a local probe of material non-linearity. The solutions to the phase matching condition, i.e. condition for a constructive non-linear effect, are obtained numerically in the mark of classical, quadratic non-linearity. The coupling coefficients that measure the transfer rate of energy as a function of time from primary to secondary modes are derived. Experiments are conducted on an aluminum plate using piezo-electric transducers and a laser interferometer, and explore the interaction for incident symmetric and anti-symmetric fundamental Lamb modes. In an experiment operated without voltage amplifier we demonstrate that the resonant nature of these ZGV modes can be leveraged to accumulate energy from long excitations and produce detectable effects at extraordinarily low input power even in such weakly non-linear material.

In ultrasonic non-destructive testing, image reconstruction is essential to restore the diffracted ultrasound signals to improve the lateral resolution of images. Some reconstruction methods, like DAS-based synthetic aperture imaging, are inefficient, especially for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D) images. Other methods do not provide high-resolution results, because they neglect the distortion effect introduced by transducer geometry. To overcome these disadvantages, we propose a 3-D ultrasonic image reconstruction method based on synthetic aperture wavenumber algorithm. It considers wave diffraction and transducer geometry effects, and can refocus the reflectors even in non-focal zone, which suits for large depth range imaging. This method builds a virtual transducer model in frequency domain by treating the focused transducer as a virtual planar transducer on its focal plane. In addition, the method uses non-uniform fast Fourier transform and deconvolution operation to achieve the 3-D image reconstruction, which has remarkably improved the efficiency and accuracy. According to the experimental results, the lateral resolution of an image reconstructed by the proposed method can reach 290.2 μm, exceeding the lateral resolution limitation of the 15 MHz focused transducer (523.24 μm). Furthermore, the proposed method only takes 0.744 s to reconstruct a 3-D image with 1000 × 100 × 100 pixels, while the time domain SAFT takes about 1163.8 s. It shows the potential for real-time 3-D imaging under advanced hardware.

Circular stepped-plates are often chosen to generate continuous waves in air due to their transmission efficiency, directive radiation patterns and capability to generate high-intensity airwave emission. Such features can be suitable for an acoustic radiator intended for the generation of harmonic radiation force, if the narrow bandwidth of the piezoelectric power transducer is not an obstacle to the application. This force has been used as the excitation source in noncontact modal analysis of mechanical devices, since it offers some advantages over the traditional impact method and the use of shakers. In this study, a directional stepped-plate ultrasonic device driven by a bolt-clamped Langevin-type transducer is used to excite the first flexural mode of a clamped-free beam by means of harmonic radiation force. The harmonic component was generated using an amplitude-modulated electrical input signal. The radiator design was done by solving a parametric optimization problem of finding a plate with the desired vibrational behavior using the genetic algorithm. Finite element analysis was used to obtain the dynamic behavior of the device and the airwave propagation was modeled using linear acoustic theory. Modal and harmonic analyses were conducted to obtain some of the electroacoustic parameters of the transducer. The acoustic field generated by the prototype is estimated by solving the Rayleigh integral and the obtained results are compared to experimental measurements.

In order to improve the acoustic radiation capability of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer in gas, a bimorph rectangular transducer based on type 2-2 piezoelectric composites is proposed in this paper, which is composed of two piezoelectric composite rectangular slices with thickness polarization. First, the bending vibration of the rectangular transducer is divided into two bending vibrations of the thin rods in the x and y directions using the equivalent elastic method. When the mechanical coupling coefficient is introduced and combined with the anisotropic piezoelectric equations, the resonance frequency equations of the thickness-polarized transducer are derived with simply supported boundary conditions. Then the bending vibration of the transducer is numerically simulated. The results show that the resonance frequency obtained by the analytical method is in good agreement with the numerical simulation results. Finally, the influence of geometrical size and two-phase volume ratio on the bending vibration performance of the transducer is analyzed. Compared with the piezoelectric bimorph transducer, the piezoelectric composite bimorph transducer has a larger bending vibration displacement amplitude, a larger transmitting voltage response, a lower resonant frequency and better acoustic radiation capability.

A circular array (CA) transducer is developed and validated to implement internal inspection of the small diameter tubes, one of whose potential application targets is the heat exchanger tubes in Modular High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor. A geometric model of the transducer and the delay law are proposed according to the inspection setup. Using k-Wave, an open source acoustic simulation toolbox, the beam profiles of various aperture sizes are analyzed to select a suitable aperture. The beams with different focal depths are compared to verify the delay law and to choose a preferable focus. Reflector responses are simulated to predict the transducer’s detection sensitivity. To validate the simulation results, a prototype transducer composed of 64 elements is fabricated. Its electrical and acoustical performances are acquired with a pulser-receiver. A 4-element aperture with the focal depth of 1.0 mm is selected to perform internal inspection experiment according to the simulation results. The eight longitudinal grooves with widths of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 mm on inner and outer tube walls are applied as typical reflectors to test circumferential detection sensitivity. The other five grooves with depths from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm are chosen to verify radial detection sensitivity. The experiment results demonstrate the detection sensitivity of the CA transducer reaches at least 0.2 mm in circumferential direction and 0.1 mm in radial direction. The CA is proven capable of inspecting small diameter tubes.

Detection and sizing of corrosion are critical issues across many industries such as for the oil and gas industry or the petrochemical industry. Inspections may become difficult and time-consuming when the structures under inspection are only partially accessible such as for pipes under insulation or at pipe supports. It has been demonstrated in the literature that the cutoff frequency-thickness product of high order ultrasonic guided wave modes can be used in medium to long-range thickness gauging. As the thickness varies along an inspection line, the thickness variation acts as a low-pass filter for the high order ultrasonic guided wave modes. As the thickness drops below the cutoff frequency-thickness product of a given mode, this mode is filtered out of the propagating wave packet. The effectiveness of this technique depends on the number of excited modes and the width of the ultrasonic beam along the inspection line. Both of these parameters can easily be controlled using electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) for the excitation. Analytical and multiphysics finite element simulations were performed to optimize an EMAT that can excite enough modes to allow the measurement of the remnant thickness based on the number of modes propagating through a corroded area. The results were validated experimentally, and a thickness resolution of 2 mm was achieved in a 10 mm aluminum plate.

The temperature characteristics of a T-shaped linear ultrasonic motor using longitudinal vibration transducers are reported. When the ultrasonic motor is excited by different voltages, the surface temperatures at the driving foot, PZT ceramic and end cap are tested by a thermal imager for obtaining the thermal characteristics of the motor under no-load condition. PZT ceramic shows the maximum temperature increase. Then, the variations of resonant frequencies, electromechanical coupling factors and mechanical Q-factors versus time, as well as the effect of the temperature on the resonance frequencies, electromechanical coupling factors and mechanical Q-factors, is measured and analysed under the long-term running. It is found that all the resonance frequencies and electromechanical coupling factors decrease as the increase of the temperature, as well as the mechanical Q-factors. In addition, the change of the output speed over temperature is tested and the obtained result shows the trend of decline. This work can provide useful guidelines for the design and optimization of linear ultrasonic motor operating in wide temperature range.

This paper discusses an ultrasound technique where the echo signals from the array of transducer elements are compressed to as few as two RF channels while still in analog domain, with a much simplified front-end electronics. The method can achieve resolutions well beyond the diffraction limit, which is set by the excitation signal wavelength and numerical aperture of the imaging system. The fundamental principle that underlies this model based imaging technique is the preservation of the spatial frequency information content of the recorded echo signals with the help of pseudo-random apodization function followed by summation. A Verasonics V1 ultrasonic scanner is used to conduct experiments using an anechoic cyst made from gel phantom, immersed in degassed water. The estimated images were compared to those obtained using traditional B-mode delay-and-sum imaging available with the Verasonics V1 ultrasound machine. The estimated images using the proposed imaging technique showed a contrast ratio of 0.96 and Full-Width-Half-Maximum (FWHM) of about half the wavelength at a depth of 9.1 cm and at 1.875 MHz center frequency while the traditional delay and sum images had a contrast ratio of 0.62 and FWHM of about 5.5 wavelengths.

Using Bi12GeO20 plate coated by AlN film, the main characteristics of the A0, S0, A1, and S1 Lamb waves are numerically calculated and compared with those of SAW in the same structure. It is shown that (i) there exist only one SAW mode for this material combination, (ii) the mode exist in a narrow range of AlN thickness, (iii) it can be excited using four different transducer configurations, (iv) the velocity and coupling constants of the mode are, respectively, higher and lower as compared with the values for the uncoated Bi12GeO20 substrate. On the other hand, for Lamb waves (i) there are several modes of different orders, (ii) the modes exist in a wide range of the AlN thickness, (iii) they may be excited using twelve IDT configurations, (iv) the velocities and coupling constants of the waves may be larger and smaller as compared with the values for the uncoated plate, (v) both characteristics of the modes depend on the mode order, film thickness, plate thickness, and transducer configuration, and (vi) the depth profiles of the modes are neither symmetrical nor anti-symmetrical. These properties make Lamb waves more attractive than SAW. Application of the waves and the structure for some applications are suggested.

Explicit integral representations for the wave fields generated by air-coupled or underwater transducers in an acoustic medium with a submerged elastic (metallic or laminate composite) plate are obtained in the form of path Fourier integrals. Together with the far-field asymptotics for the incident, reflected, transmitted and guided waves that were derived from those integrals, they proved to be a convenient tool for the in-depth study of wave phenomena inherent in such acoustic-elastic structures. The present paper is focused on the non-conventional properties of backward leaky waves such as the increased wave energy transfer through the plate due to the increasing occurrence of energy vortices impeding lateral outflow of wave energy. The transformation of classical Lamb waves into leaky guided waves due to a fluid loading, especially in the backward wave range, the energy properties of those waves and the appearing traveling Scholter-Stoneley waves as well as source energy partition among the reflected, transmitted and guided waves are also numerically illustrated and discussed.

The ability to monitor the viscosity of lubricating oils within metallic products is of interest to many industries, these being the automotive, aerospace and food industries to name a few. Acoustic mismatch at the metallic-liquid interface restricts ultrasonic signal transmission and so limits applicability and sensitivity of the technique. In this work, we propose the use of a continuously repeated chirp (CRC) shear wave to amplify the measurable acoustic response to liquid viscosity. The technique enables multiple reflections to superimpose inside the component and form a quasi-static standing wave whose amplitude spectrum depends on the condition at the solid-liquid boundary. Bare element shear ultrasonic transducers of 5 MHz resonant frequency were bonded to the lower surface of an aluminium plate in a pitch-catch arrangement to measure liquid in contact with the upper surface. Transducers were pulsed using a continuously repeated frequency sweep, from 0.5 to 9.5 MHz over 10 ms. The amplitude spectrum of the resulting standing wave was observed for a series of standard viscosity oils, which served as a calibration procedure, from which the standing wave reflection coefficient (S), was obtained. Measurements of 17 blended oils ranging in viscosity from 1080 to 6.7 mPa s were made. The technique was also evaluated with the addition of a polyimide matching layer (ML) between the metallic and liquid interface. Ultrasonic viscosity measurement values were then compared to measurements made using a conventional laboratory viscometer. The CRC method was found to significantly improve the sensitivity of viscosity measurement at a metal-liquid interface when compared to a single frequency burst with the benefit of low cost signal generation and acquisition hardware requirements. The CRC method is also capable of instant rapid response measurements as the signal responds in real time without the need to wait for a returning pulse.

Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are versatile non-contact ultrasonic transducers with relatively low transduction efficiency. A fundamental problem not answered completely yet is how the structure of an EMAT influences the generation of various Lamb wave modes. We tackle this problem with fully coupled frequency domain EMAT models where the underlying integro-differential equations are solved directly and the magnitudes of the phasors of the displacement components at a point in the middle plane of a plate are used to represent the strength of the S0 and A0 mode waves. Idealized single-wire, two-wire and wire bundle EMATs with uniform bias magnetic field and practical meander line and tightly wound EMATs with distributed bias field are studied. Polar plots of the idealized EMATs with swept angle of the bias field show that the vertical component of the bias field decides the strength of the S0 mode waves. Sweeping of the width of the magnet for the practical EMATs generates S0 mode curves that could be explained from the distribution of the vertical component of the bias field. This work represents the first attempt to solve the proposed problem of characterizing excitability of Lamb waves with EMATs quantitatively, via the model-based approach.

Lamb waves and electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) based methods are increasingly used in damage detection owing to their high sensitivity to small structural defects. Lamb wave based methods are effective in detecting damages in a large area and electro-impedance based methods are suitable for characterizing the identified damage. Based on these two methods, a novel combined damage detection method is presented in this research. To achieve this, first, a mobile transducer set is developed, which can be used for both the Lamb waves and EMI based methods. Then, a baseline-free damage detection strategy that combines the Lamb waves and EMI methods is presented. Finally, a laboratory-sized test piece is used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results achieved with the application of the presented combined method for characterizing an L-shape crack in an aluminum plate show better location accuracy and detection efficiency than those obtained by applying only one method.

The accuracy of measuring inclusion size in direct C-scan image of immersion ultrasonic testing is restricted by the lateral resolution of the focused transducer, even if a high frequency is used, and the blurred edge due to scattering of sound waves at inclusions. In this work, an improved image restoration method that is based on the Richardson-Lucy (RL) iterative algorithm is proposed, which is used to restore the C-scan image and improve the accuracy of inclusion size measurement in immersion ultrasonic testing. For the improved RL iterative algorithm, the point spread function (PSF) is derived based on the multi-Gaussian beam model and Kirchhoff approximation, which considers the propagation properties of sound waves at water-steel interface and the spectral characteristics of the transducer with high frequency. In order to determine the final iteration number, the relationship between final iteration number and size of the inclusion in the image is established by restoring the simulated C-scan image and further calibrated with size correction factor. The size correction factor considers the effect of sound attenuation and electro-mechanical transformation encountered in practical testing equipment. Experimental results show that the inclusion sizes measured in restored C-scan images agree well with the optical micrograph results, which prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Lamb wave scattering from a crack originating at a through-hole is of practical importance because of the abundance of fastener holes used in engineering structures. Notches are often used to simulate cracks so that Lamb wave methods can be more conveniently investigated in the laboratory. A linear, three-dimensional finite element model is employed in this paper to study incremental scattering of the fundamental anti-symmetric (A0) Lamb wave mode from notches emanating from through-holes. The term "incremental scattering" refers to the change in scattering caused by introduction of the notch and is motivated by structural health monitoring for which transducers are fixed and signal changes are interpreted to detect damage. Far-field angular scattering patterns are generated for multiple incident angles and frequencies, and such patterns are experimentally validated at one frequency by laser vibrometry measurements. Comparisons are made between a vertical notch alone (no hole) and notches located above and below the through-hole. Additionally, holes of different sizes are considered to investigate the effect of hole diameter on incremental scattering patterns. Results show that the presence, location and size of the through-hole affect both the shape and strength of notch incremental scattering patterns.

A damage localization method based on the time reversal focusing of the mode-converted scattered Lamb wave is proposed for plate structures with a non-symmetric defect in the thickness direction. Dual transducers are attached symmetrically on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate to selectively emit and receive the lowest-order symmetric (S0) and antisymmetric (A0) modes. The localization of damage is achieved by the numerical time-reversed (TR) simulation of the mode-converted Lamb wave generated at the defect. To investigate the validity of the proposed method, the signals of the Lamb waves in a plate with a partial-thickness notch are numerically simulated by the three-dimensional elastodynamic finite integration technique (EFIT). When the S0 mode is emitted in the damaged plate, not only the S0 mode is scattered but also the A0 mode is generated due to mode conversion at the notch. Similar mode conversion behavior is confirmed when the A0 mode is emitted. The time reversal of the mode-converted scattered Lamb waves creates focused spots at the damage location without using baseline data for the undamaged plate. The proposed method reduces the magnitude of the artifacts compared to the time reversal of the non-mode-converted Lamb wave, and yields the focused spot whose size is associated with the size of the notch and the half wavelength of the time-reversed wave mode. Furthermore, the proposed method is applied to a plate with a notch-type defect adjacent to an a priori known through-thickness hole, demonstrating the damage localization in a relatively complicated structure.

Ring piezoelectric transducers (rPETs) have attracted multitudinous attentions due to their widespread applications in hydro-acoustic engineering, structural health monitoring, and energy harvesting. However, cracks are inevitably occurred by the concentrated stress at the interface between metal and piezoelectric ceramics, which will seriously affect the performance and service life of the devices. Hence, a novel functionally graded ring piezoelectric transducer (FG-rPET) has been designed and an accurate analytical system is constructed mainly including a three-port electromechanical equivalent circuit model (EECM) which can acquire exact solutions in radial vibration. In addition, the proposed three-port EECM has excellent generalizability, which is also applicable to conventional rPETs. The validity of the EECM is verified by experiments and the finite element method. The vibration characteristics (resonance/anti-resonance frequencies and effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (keff)) with fundamental and second modes for the FG-rPETs can be regulated via the inhomogeneity index and wall thickness. Markedly enhanced keff at second modes can be obtained for the FG-rPETs with specific wall thicknesses. The proposed analytical system has important guiding significance for structure optimization design of piezoelectric devices, and the designed FG-rPET is expected to break the bottleneck of mechanical properties for the conventional rPETs.

In order to solve the problems of frequency shift, efficiency decline and life shortening caused by temperature rise in the working process of high-power ultrasonic transducer, the technology of heat pipe is employed for enhancing heat dissipation of the ultrasonic transducer. A new type of high-power transducer with heat pipe heat dissipation (HPUT) is proposed in this study. The heat pipe radiator adopts the form of a copper-water-composite wick, and installs straight fins on the condensation section to enhance heat dissipation. Six heat pipe radiators are embedded in the front cover plate of the transducer close to the piezoelectric ceramic and evenly arranged along the circumference of the transducer. The vibration characteristics, radiated sound field characteristics and heat dissipation characteristics of the HPUT are compared with those of traditional Langevin ultrasonic transducer (TLUT) through simulations and experiments. Results manifest that compared with the TLUT, the HPUT has much lower operation temperature (reduced by 60% in this study), much smaller resonant frequency shift (reduced by 75% in this study) and the higher vibration amplitude (increased by 25% in this study). This study will contribute to the development of high-power ultrasonic transducer which has potential application value in many industrial fields.

Air-coupled ultrasonic (ACU) testing has proven to be a valuable method for increasing the speed in non-destructive ultrasonic testing and the investigation of sensitive specimens. A major obstacle to implementing ACU methods is the significant signal power loss at the air–specimen and transducer–air interfaces. The loss between transducer and air can be eliminated by using recently developed fluidic transducers. These transducers use pressurized air and a natural flow instability to generate high sound power signals. Due to this self-excited flow instability, the individual pulses are dissimilar in length, amplitude, and phase. These amplitude and angle modulated pulses offer the great opportunity to further increase the signal-to-noise ratio with pulse compression methods. In practice, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) setups reduce the time required to scan the specimen surface, but demand high pulse discriminability. By applying envelope removal techniques to the individual pulses, the pulse discriminability is increased allowing only the remaining phase information to be targeted for analysis. Finally, semi-synthetic experiments are presented to verify the applicability of the envelope removal method and highlight the suitability of the fluidic transducer for MIMO setups.

Sludge accumulated inside a fluid-flowing pipe used in a chemical or semiconductor processing factory should be periodically removed to avoid flow blockage that increases undesirable pressure inside the pipe. Accordingly, it is common practice to periodically dismantle a pipe system, clean up the accumulate sludge, and reassemble. Therefore, an accurate estimation of sludge accumulation in the pipe is important to minimize the halting time of a chemical process using the system. Considering the lack of a practically efficient, non-invasive method to estimate the severity of sludge accumulation without interrupting the on-going chemical process, we propose an ultrasonic, non-invasive, real-time inspection method using a pair of ultrasonic wedge transducers installed circumferentially on the outer wall of a pipe at the same axial coordinate. To detect lowly accumulated sludge, an ultrasonic wave path from a transmitting transducer via a test pipe with accumulated sludge to a receiving transducer is carefully designed. The severity of sludge accumulation can then be determined by the amplitude of the longitudinal wave picked up by another transducer installed on the other side of the wall. We performed a series of experiments with steel and PVC pipes that are partially filled with water and sludge of different heights. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness and practical viability of the proposed inspection method.

Defect detection during pulse-echo ultrasonic testing (UT) is challenging when defects are located in a dead zone where the echoes from the defects are overshadowed by disturbances from the initial ringing signal of the UT transducer. The time-gate method is one of the most widely used approaches in UT to filter out such unwanted components, but defects in the dead zone are virtually impossible to detect using conventional methods. This paper proposes an autoencoder-based end-to-end ultrasonic testing method to detect defects within the dead zone of a transducer. The autoencoder is designed to predict the normal behavior of ultrasonic signals including disturbances, thus enabling the identification of even subtle deviations made by defects. To advance the performance of the autoencoder further with a limited amount of training data, a two-step training procedure is presented, involving training using pure normal signals measured from a defect-free specimen and re-training using pseudo-normal samples identified by the autoencoder with a smart thresholding strategy. This two-step procedure enables us to develop an adaptive autoencoder model that can be effectively employed to process the newly measured ultrasonic signals. For a demonstration of the proposed method, UT-based B-scan inspections of aluminum blocks with near-surface defects are conducted. The results suggest that the proposed method outperforms the conventional gate-based inspection approach with regard to its ability to identify the sizes and locations of near-surface defects.

Two main metrics are usually employed to assess the quality of medical ultrasound (US) images, namely the contrast and the spatial resolution. A number of imaging algorithms have been proposed to improve one of those metrics, often at the expense of the other one. This paper presents the application of a correlation-based ultrasound imaging method, called Excitelet, to medical US imaging applications and the inclusion of a new Phase Coherence (PC) metric within its formalism. The main idea behind this algorithm, originally developed and validated for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) applications, is to correlate a reference signal database with the measured signals acquired from a transducer array. In this paper, it is shown that improved lateral resolutions and a reduction of imaging artifacts are obtained over the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) when using Excitelet in conjunction with a PC filter. This novel method shows potential for the imaging of specular reflectors, such as invasive surgical tools. Numerical and experimental results presented in this paper demonstrate the benefit, in terms of contrast and resolution, of using the Excitelet method combined with PC for the imaging of strong reflectors.

This paper proposes a method of passive electrical decoupling which aimed at found application in reducing the crosstalk phenomenon in multi-element ultrasonic transducers. A homogeneous piezoelectric plate, covered on one side by a 1D periodic arrangement of thin metallic electrodes and on the other side by a full electrode, is considered. Finite element analysis and experimental measurements are performed to obtain the dispersion curves and normal displacements at the surface of the structure. It is shown that applying inductive shunts at the electrodes, band gaps can be created in the first Brillouin zone, which can prevent from the establishment of the first thickness mode in the plate. In that way the mechanical inter-element coupling can be lowered. Thus, the acoustic radiation in water from one sector excited at the resonance frequency is found to be closer to that of a piston mode. The transposition of this principle to the situation of a transducer including a rear medium and a front matching layer confirms the possibility of reducing the inter-element coupling. However, the physical effects at the origin of this reduction are different from those inherent to the cutting of a piezocomposite ceramic as it is done in most probes available in the market. As a result, we show that taking advantage of the electrical boundary conditions upon the passive elements in a transducer gives real opportunities for crosstalk reduction that may be implemented in ultrasonic systems for imaging in the medical field and in NDT.

Unidirectional generation of a pure guided wave mode is of practical importance in structural health monitoring (SHM). Currently, unidirectional propagation guided waves can only be generated by using transducer array in a phased array form, which is limited within a very narrow frequency range. If a variable-wavelength unidirectional wave source is required, both the transducer spacing and time delay usually need to be changed with frequency, which is against the permanent arrangement demand of transducers in SHM. In this work, inspired by the unique features of bidirectional SH0 wave (the fundamental shear horizontal mode) piezoelectric face-shear and thickness-shear transducers, a new method was proposed for generating unidirectional SH0 wave. Two types of transducer configurations (double-side and single-side) were designed to unidirectionally generate SH0 wave without frequency-dependent time delay. Both finite element simulations and experiments were conducted to validate the unidirectional features of the proposed double-side and single-side transducer configurations. Results shows that the double-side transducer configuration is capable of generating unidirectional propagation SH0 wave at the frequency range from 100 kHz to 150 kHz, while the corresponding working frequency range for the single-side one is from 100 kHz to 140 kHz. The proposed method provides a cheap way for generation of the unidirectional SH0 wave within a certain frequency range without adjusting the relative transducer spacing and the time delay with frequency, so it will have great potential applications in SHM.

Focusing the incident wave beam along a given direction is very useful in guided wave based structural health monitoring (SHM), as it will not only save input power but also simplify the interpretation of signals. Although the fundamental shear horizontal (SH0) wave is of practical importance in SHM due to its non-dispersive characteristics so far there have been very limited transducers which can control the radiation patterns of SH0 wave. In this work, a variable-frequency bidirectional SH0 wave piezoelectric transducer (BSH-PT) is proposed, which consists of two rectangular face-shear (d24) PZT wafers. The opposite face-shear deformation of the two PZT wafers under applied electric fields makes the BSH-PT capable of exciting SH0 wave along two opposite directions (0° and 180°). Both finite element simulations and experimental testings are conducted to examine the performance of the proposed BSH-PT. Results show that pure SH0 wave can be generated by this BSH-PT and its wave beam can be focused bi-directionally. Moreover, the bidirectional characteristics of the BSH-PT can be kept over a wide frequency range from 150 kHz to 250 kHz. As the circumferential SH0 (CSH0) wave in a thin hollow cylindrical structure is essentially equivalent to the SH0 wave in a plate, the proposed BSH-PT may also be very useful to develop a CSH0-wave-based SHM system for hollow cylindrical structures.

The emergence of ultrasonic dry point contact (DPC) transducers that emit horizontal shear waves has enabled efficient collection of high-quality data in the context of a nondestructive evaluation of concrete structures. This offers an opportunity to improve the quality of evaluation by adapting advanced imaging techniques. Reverse time migration (RTM) is a simulation-based reconstruction technique that offers advantages over conventional methods, such as the synthetic aperture focusing technique. RTM is capable of imaging boundaries and interfaces with steep slopes and the bottom boundaries of inclusions and defects. However, this imaging technique requires a massive amount of memory and its computation cost is high. In this study, both bottlenecks of the RTM are resolved when shear transducers are used for data acquisition. An analytical approach was developed to obtain the source and receiver wavefields needed for imaging using reverse time migration. It is shown that the proposed analytical approach not only eliminates the high memory demand, but also drastically reduces the computation time from days to minutes.

We have investigated limited angle transmission tomography to estimate speed of sound (SOS) distributions for breast cancer detection. That requires both accurate delineations of major tissues, in this case by segmentation of prior B-mode images, and calibration of the relative positions of the opposed transducers. Experimental sensitivity evaluation of the reconstructions with respect to segmentation and calibration errors is difficult with our current system. Therefore, parametric studies of SOS errors in our bent-ray reconstructions were simulated. They included mis-segmentation of an object of interest or a nearby object, and miscalibration of relative transducer positions in 3D. Close correspondence of reconstruction accuracy was verified in the simplest case, a cylindrical object in homogeneous background with induced segmentation and calibration inaccuracies. Simulated mis-segmentation in object size and lateral location produced maximum SOS errors of 6.3% within 10 mm diameter change and 9.1% within 5 mm shift, respectively. Modest errors in assumed transducer separation produced the maximum SOS error from miscalibrations (57.3% within 5 mm shift), still, correction of this type of error can easily be achieved in the clinic. This study should aid in designing adequate transducer mounts and calibration procedures, and in specification of B-mode image quality and segmentation algorithms for limited angle transmission tomography relying on ray tracing algorithms.

Guided-wave based damage detection for plates has been widely studied for structural health monitoring. Because most of the earlier studies used dispersive Lamb waves, substantial efforts had to be made to alleviate the dispersive and multi-modal nature of Lamb waves and the effect of surface conditions. In contrast, shear-horizontal (SH) waves have better propagation characteristics suitable for the detection of damages in plates, but SH waves have not been widely used due to the lack of efficient methods to generate and sense omnidirectional SH waves. The objective of this study is to construct diagnostic images of damaged plates by using omnidirectional SH waves with a special emphasis on the compensation of the frequency-dependence of the SH wave transducers. The compensation is necessary to have reliable diagnostic images because its frequency-dependent characteristics considerably can affect imaging quality if they are not considered. Consequently, simplified, yet effective, models representing the transfer functions of the omnidirectional SH wave magnetostrictive patch transducer (OSH-MPT) are developed in this paper. To visualize the position and shape of the structural damages in a metallic plate, the virtual time-reversal imaging method is used and two alternative techniques are considered to compensate for the effects of the transfer functions of transducers in the imaging processes. The imaging results after the compensation appear quite promising, suggesting that the omnidirectional SH wave based enhanced time-reversal imaging can be an efficient inspection method for plate structures.

The practical implementation of nonlinear ultrasonic technique has been limited to the through-transmission setup for measuring the second harmonic component induced by the nonlinearity or microstructural changes of test material. A more practical technique such as the pulse-echo testing has been ruled out because a traction-free reflecting boundary destructively alters the nonlinear generation process. A focusing acoustic beam or rigid boundary condition was often employed for biomedical imaging and fluid nonlinearity in the pulse-echo inspection. In this article, we further explore a more general and efficient method to improve the generation of the second harmonic component in the pulse-echo mode with traction-free surface. A dual element planar transdcer with optimal phase shift of the input signal in one element relative to another is proposed for this purpose. The validity of the phase shift concept is confirmed by comparing the enhanced generation of second harmonic amplitudes and the resulting nonlinear parameters with the rigid-boundary case equivalent to the conventional through-transmission setup.

Polymer tanks made of Polypropylene (PP) sub-assemblies are commonly used for their ease of formability, surface and optical quality. The tightness of an assembly is classically assessed by pressurizing the vessel and measuring a pressure drop after a given period. In order to avoid this long and imprecise method, active ultrasound methods can be envisioned, but should be carefully designed in order to derive the proper transducer configurations, frequencies and assess the performances of the method in terms of repeatability and detectability. In this article, a thermoviscous Finite Element Model (FEM) is derived in order to predict the effect of realistic damages on the measured transmitted acoustic field in bonded polymer joints. Three damage scenarios are considered, namely through holes, flat-bottom holes and internal voids that may impair the tightness and durability of a polymer assembly. Numerical results in terms of on-axis sound pressure spectra and directivity diagrams are presented and verified experimentally on a flat panel. These results allow the derivation of design rules for the active inspection of polymer jointed structures.

The study investigated ultrasound (US) transducer push, tantamount to applied transducer pressure, during abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) US scanning in a simulated non-clinical setup. During an assessment of maximal AAA diameter on a three-dimensional print-based AAA phantom, US transducer push varied as much as 2000% (range: 0.52–12.45 kPa) amongst 16 experienced sonographers. The mean transducer push was 5.54 ± 3.91 kPa (CV = 0.71). Deformation of a standardized gel-pad allowed for transducer push calculation based on US images; Young’s modulus of the gel-pad was estimated to 44,26 N/m2. The method is theoretically validated in a safe and non-clinical environment. Future investigations with the aim of clinical validation of the gel-pad principle on AAA patients are suggested, including the objectification of the magnitude of an eventual transducer push-related error during US AAA diameter measurement.

Compared with B-mode imaging, three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound imaging is more helpful in research and clinical application. At present, the 3D ultrasound images can be acquired directly with two-dimensional (2D) array transducer or reconstructed from a series of B-mode images obtained with one-dimensional (1D) array transducer. Imaging with 2D array transducer can achieve a high frame rate, but suffering from the complexity of the imaging system, such as the large amount of channels, and high computational complexity. Reconstructing 3D images from a series of B-mode images can be implemented by recording the position and orientation of the slice images. This is a low-cost and flexible imaging method, but usually suffering from the low imaging quality and low frame rate. In our previous work, a novel 3D ultrasound imaging method in frequency domain with a moved 1D array transducer is presented. This method can reduce the computational complexity with FFT, and get improved imaging quality and frame rate to some extent. Besides, this method can be adopted to construct images with a row-column-addressed 2D array, which can reduce the amount of channels effectively. In this paper, a two-steps implementation of this imaging method is proposed, in which the combined implementation of the 3D imaging is decomposed to two steps of 2D imaging processes in Frequency domain. In the first step, the received echoes of the 1D array transducer at each position are processed with a 2D imaging processes in the lateral- axial planes. In the second step, a 2D imaging processes is preformed in the planes of orthogonal to the transducer. Simulation results show that the two-steps implementation can achieve almost the same imaging quality to the previous work. Compared with the implementation of 3D imaging in our previous work, the proposed two-steps implementation can be carried out with parallel process to improve the computational efficiency, or carried out with loop to reduce the hardware cost. Besides, the first step can be performed with a conventional DAS imaging method when a cylindrical wave is adopted for imaging. The influence of the spread angle of the field is also discussed.

The method of quasicollinear acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs) piezoelectric transducer dimensions optimization is presented. The AOTFs with large interaction length apply the bulk acoustic wave (BAW) reflection from the input optical facet. Optimization is based on spectral approach to simulation of the BAW field in anisotropic media and Raman–Nath equations numerically solved for the inhomogeneous acoustic field. It was found that variation of the transducer dimensions can minimize RF power consumption of the AOTF. Comparison of the optimized transducer dimensions with those commonly used in quasicollinear paratellurite AOTFs showed that it is possible to improve the AOTF energy efficiency in about 2 times. It was shown that acoustic field simulation results obtained for one AOTF geometry can be applied to the other geometries but for equivalent frequency providing the same ultrasound beam ray spectrum width. It was also shown that when choosing the quasicollinear AOTF with reflection geometry, one should not rely only on the AO figure of merit value, since the energy efficiency of such AOTF type will be determined by the product of the AO figure of merit and the AOTF efficiency, which takes into account the change in the acoustic beam width in the reflection process. The results aim at improving the design of AOTFs for ultrashort laser pulse shaping.

Ultrasound based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) commonly uses surface-bonded piezoelectric wafer active transducers (PWaTs) for ultrasound wave generation and sensing. Both the electromechanical impedance (EMI) of the surface bonded PWaT and the ultrasound pitch-catch signal have been studied extensively for damage detection. However, these two signals were studied separately. The correlation between the EMI and the pitch-catch signal has not been studied in detail. In this paper, a broadband spectral analysis method is presented to analyze the influence of the EMI resonances on the fundamental symmetric (S0) pitch-catch signal. First, the broadband responses of the PWaT actuator and sensor are measured and analyzed in the time-frequency domain. The results clearly demonstrate that the S0 pitch-catch signal can deviate significantly from the excitation signal when the excitation frequency is above a threshold. Next, a simulation model was implemented to explain the observed distortions. The simulation model was first validated by adjusting the adhesive parameters to reproduce the experiment measurements. The resonant characteristics of the PWaT actuator and sensor were then analyzed separately. The study reveals that the S0 deviations are due to the resonances and anti-resonances of the PWaT EMI. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the resonance characteristics of surface-bonded PWaTs are more complicated than previously known. The research framework presented in this paper lays the theoretical foundation for future more in-depth analysis of the PWaT resonances.

A new thickness measurement technique is described in which air-coupled ultrasound is used to interrogate nonporous membranes at relatively long wavelengths. The thru-transmission technique compares a reference signal taken with the membrane absent to a material signal acquired when the membrane is present in the transducer’s wave field. The technique uses both amplitude and phase information from the signals’ frequency spectra to find the membrane’s thickness along with its surface density. No a priori knowledge of the membrane’s material properties is needed. The technique is experimentally verified by estimating the thicknesses of a number of metallic and non-metallic sheet-like materials. Thicknesses are typically measured to within 6% of their nominal values and the technique spans a range of roughly 10–100 μm.

Tone-burst excitation is often used for ultrasonic transducers of specific operation modes or for overcoming transducer overheating problems associated with continuous wave (CW) excitation. In this study, a theoretical model for the self-heating phenomenon of a piezoelectric disc element is established to estimate the temperature rise induced by a tone-burst electric field. An analytical solution for the temperature rise of the piezoelectric element is obtained by using Laplace transform method. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements are performed to investigate the influence of different excitation parameters on the temperature rise. By comparing the experimental results with the simulation results, the temperature-rise difference between tone-burst and CW excitations is quantified, and the validity of the theoretical model is verified. Furthermore, a multiparameter estimation method is proposed for the heat convection coefficient and dielectric properties under high-field operating conditions. These results are useful in both optimization of heat dissipation performance and characterization of high-power ultrasonic transducers.

With the development of ultrasonic technology, some ultrasonic processing technologies require a wide processing range. In this paper, a radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is proposed and analyzed, which is composed of a spherical piezoelectric ceramic sandwiched by two concentric spherical metal shells. The electromechanical equivalent circuits of the spherically isotropic spherical shell and the spherical piezoelectric ceramic with arbitrary wall thickness are derived from their motion equations. According to the mechanical boundary conditions, the electromechanical equivalent circuits and frequency equation of various piezoelectric composite vibration systems can be obtained, including the radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer. The correctness of the proposed theory is verified via comparison with the finite element method and the previous theoretical model. In addition, the 2nd-order effective mechanical coupling coefficient for the radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is higher than that of 1st-order within a specific range of wall thickness, which can be designed as the high-frequency transducer. The radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is expected to be used in underwater sound, structural health monitoring, and high-frequency ultrasound.
