Cholesterol ester storage disease (CESD) is one of the rare causes that should be kept in mind in the etiology of cirrhosis. Recent studies detected that significantly reduced lysosomal acid lipase deficiency enzyme (LAL) in patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC). Moreover, studies have evaluated that LAL activity is as effective as scoring systems in assessing the severity of cirrhosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the CESD with LAL level and mutation analysis of LIPA gene in patients diagnosed with CC and to compare LAL activities between patients with CC and healthy volunteers.Laboratory parameters and cirrhosis stage (CHILD and MELD) were recorded for the patient group included in the study. In addition, blood samples were taken from each case included in the study for LAL activity determination and LIPA gene analysis.A statistically significant decrease in LAL activity was found in patients diagnosed with CC compared to the healthy group. LIPA gene analysis did not detect CESD in any patient group. Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between LAL activity and white blood cell and platelet counts in both healthy volunteers and CC patient groups. In the univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis of the parameters associated with the MELD of ≥10 in patients with CC, significant relationship was found between the MELD of ≥10 and the LAL activity.In our study, LAL activity was significantly lower in CC patients than in the normal population. LAL activity level appears to be a parameter that can be used to assess the severity of cirrhosis.

KISA, Ucler/0000-0002-8131-6810 WOS: 000344155900020 PubMed: 25552159 Background/aim: To compare pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) IgG antibody levels between healthcare workers who were vaccinated with the pH1N1 influenza vaccine and the unvaccinated healthcare workers who were selected as the control group. Materials and methods: A total of 68 healthcare workers were included in this study. Of those, 53 were adults vaccinated with the H1N1 influenza vaccine and 15 were unvaccinated. Serum samples were parsed and stored at -40 degrees C until they were examined. Results: Of the total 53 vaccinated healthcare workers, 16 (30.1%) were positive for IgG antibodies (titer > 11), 17 (32.0%) were negative for IgG antibodies (titer < 9), and 20 (37.7%) were borderline (titer: 9-11). Of the 15 unvaccinated healthcare workers, 1 (6.6%) was positive for IgG antibodies, 11 (73.3%) were negative for IgG antibodies, and the remaining 3 (20.0%) had borderline values (P = 0.014, P < 0.05). In both groups, there was no statistically significant difference between IgG-negative, IgG-positive, and borderline subjects in terms of age or sex. Conclusion: The IgG antibody level was higher in the vaccinated healthcare workers than among the unvaccinated healthcare workers.

KISA, Ucler/0000-0002-8131-6810 WOS: 000265263900003 Aim: Studies have shown that no booster dose was required at least 10 to 15 years after a primary vaccination for individuals who developed protective anti-hepatitis B surface (anti-HBs) antibodies. In this study. booster dose requirement for HBV after primary immunization was investigated. Materials and Methods: Seventeen individuals vaccinated previously were enrolled in the study. They had once developed a protective level of anti-HBs antibody after immunization and their anti-HBs titer had declined to an underprotective level. Twenty uninfected and unvaccinated healthy people were chosen as controls. Lymphoproliferative response to in-vitro stimulation with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBs response to vaccine were evaluated for immune response. Results: T lymphocytes from 4 (24%) of the study group showed lymphoproliferative response to HBsAg stimulation while none of the controls did (P < 0.05). In all subjects in the study group, anti-HBs response ( >= 10 mlU/ml) was detected 1 to 7 days after the booster injection but in only 2 of the controls antibody response was detected 28 days after the first dose of HBV vaccine (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: A booster dose of HBV vaccine might not be required because of immunological memory.
