- Abstract
Objective: Chronic diseases are seen more frequently after the age 40s. Insulin resistance can affect multiple organ systems in our body like reproductive system (Amenorrhea, hirsutism, infertility), lipid metabolism (High Low density lipoprotein levels), endocrine system (diabetes mellitus) and etc. In this retrospective study, our aim is to evaluate the insulin resistance and obesity rates in a population who admitted to our Check-Up clinic without any known chronic disease under 39 years and younger. Methods: People who are admitted to our checkup clinic without any known chronic disease (diabetes mellitus, hypertension and etc.) and without using insulin sensitizer drugs were evaluated retrospectively. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostatic model assessment method and presence of insulin resistance was accepted as the values equal and above 2,7. Obesity was accepted as the body mass index was 30 and over. Results: A total of 90 people (27 men, 63 women, age: 31,06±6,01 years) were evaluated. Insulin resistance was found in 48,9% of our subject and obesity was found in %37,8 of our population. In our obese population 70,5% of them have insulin resistance. Discussion: Insulin resistance was accepted to be the main risk factor of many diseases like dyslipidemia, hypertension, infertility, diabetes mellitus and even cancer. Obesity is the main reason of insulin resistance and was accepted to be a pandemic disorder. According to our results obese people have more common insulin resistance in comparison with normal weighted people (70,5% vs %35). Recent guidelines advise to start obesity management with patients who have a BMI ≥ 30, or those who have a BMI ≥ 27 if concomitant obesity-related risk factors or diseases exist. Life style modification should be encouraged and should be emphasized in every visit in this insulin resistant and/or obese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
