In this study, Turkish Cousinia species were examined in point of chromosome number and morphology. To our knowledge, this work is the first comprehensive chromosomal study regarding Turkish Cousinia as a whole, especially for endemics. As consistent with previous reports, the chromosome numbers are mostly 2n = 26 and have been determined also as 2n = 24 for only the members of Cynaroideae and Sphaerocephalae sections. An interesting result of this paper is that there is not any polyploid species in this taxonomic group and all of them are diploids. Concerning the chromosome evolution of the Cousinia species, we concluded that merely dysploidy is effective within the genus and evolutionally a unipolar reduction goes on in the basic chromosome number in speciation (from 13 to 12). In terms of general chromosomal information, the chromosomes of the genus consist of metacentric and submetacentric types and they could be categorized in small category according to Lima De Faria classification (0.67-3.43). According to chromosomal indices used in this paper, while most species have symmetrical chromosomes, fewer have asymmetrical ones. From this point, it could be said that Cousinia stapfiana could be assessed as the most evolved taxa in karyomorphology according to the average of all indexes used in here. Besides, Cousinia bicolor, Cousinia birandiana, and Cousinia sintenisii are species having the most primitive chromosome within the genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epilobium and Chamaenerion included 165 and 8 species over the world, respectively. The members of the genera are distributed particularly in moist habitats from subpolar to tropical regions. This paper aims to provide improvements in the phylogeny of the genera Epilobium and Chamaenerion using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of nuclear DNA and matK gene sequence data evaluation with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference criterations. A total of 188 individual accessions belonging to 28 taxa were newly generated and 110 sequences imported from GenBank (NCBI) were analysed. The nrDNA and plastid DNA gene trees supported to treat Epilobium and Chamaenerion as separate genera in two well-supported clades. The matK analyses revealed a better resolution than nrDNA ITS within the Chamaenerion clade and supported the inclusion of C. angustifolium in the sect. Chamaenerion. However, most of the examined species mostly fell into the polytomy in both trees excluding E. roseum subsp. consimile which should be considered a distinct species in the Epilobium contrary to morphological treatment in many national flora books. Both phylogenetic trees also support distinguishing E. prionophyllum from E. anatolicum previously treated as a subspecies of E. anatolicum. In conclusion, these preliminary phylogenetic analyses have contributed significantly to the determination of the limits of members belonging to Epilobium and Chamaenerion distributed in Türkiye. Achillea alimeana Semiz & Uysal sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), was described, diagnosed and illustrated as a new species. It was collected from Akdağ Mountains in Denizli Province. In this paper, the diagnostic characters of A. alimeana and its similar species were discussed in the morphological, palynological and molecular findings. Ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal studies have become increasingly recognised as a valuable source of information on the use and possible pharmacological activity of many plant species. There is no study presenting traditional herbal remedies used for kidney diseases in Turkey. The purpose of the paper is to compile herbal remedies used in kidney diseases in Turkey with detailed usage information and chemical constituents. The botanical names, families, and local names; used parts; preparation methods; administration/dosage; kidney problems and chemical constituents were presented by screening ethnobotanical, ethnomedicinaland phytochemical studies. The most cited plant families, the most cited genera, and the most frequently used plant parts were determined and presented in graphics. In total, 300 taxa belonging to 70 families were determined as being traditional herbal remedies used in kidney diseases. Asteraceae (57), Lamiaceae (33), Rosaceae (30), Fabaceae (16), Malvaceae (15), Apiaceae (13) and Poaceae (10) were found as the most cited plant families. The most cited genera were Helichrysum (44), Equisetum (27), Tribulus (23), Urtica (23), Rosa (17), Alcea (14), Hypericum (14) and Paliurus (14), respectively. It was found that the aerial parts were the most frequently used part of theplant, accounting for 28%. Following in this category are leaves (19%), flowers (14%), fruits (14%), underground parts (13%), seeds (5%), stem (3%), and other parts (4%). The pharmacological studies of the most cited genera were also reviewed to confirm the efficacy of these plants inthe treatment of kidney diseases. It is concluded that a number of pharmacological and phytochemical research support the traditional usage of plants, but further studies are needed. Tragopogon porrifolius occurs in Turkey with 3 taxonomically confused subspecies: T. porrifolius subsp. eriospermus, T. porrifolius subsp. longirostris, and T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus. In the present paper, T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus endemic to Turkey is raised at specific level based on morphological and molecular analysis. After detailed assessment of original herbarium specimens and literature studies, we found that this name is not typified yet. Thus, a lectotype is provided together with an emended diagnosis; synonym, distribution map, and conservation status for the first time. This paper includes the morphological and anatomical characters of the nutlets of 7 endemic species of the subsection Fragiles of the genus Stachys (Lamiaceae) from Turkey and the systematic significance of these characteristics, using one-way analysis of variance and cluster and principal component analyses. Morphological characters such as the dimensions, shapes, colors, and surfaces of the nutlets were studied using light and scanning electron microscopes. The structures and thicknesses of the pericarp and endosperm layers, as well as the sizes of the cotyledon in the nutlets, were anatomically studied. The outcomes revealed that the taxa vary from each other in terms of nutlet shape and color. The nutlet dimensions range from 1.31 mm to 3.49 mm in length and from 0.84 mm to 1.95 mm in width. While Stachys longiflora and S. pseudopinardii have the largest nutlets, S. chasmosericea has the smallest. The nutlet surface ornamentation was recorded as 5 types: reticulate, scalariform, reticulate-foveate, ruminate, and rugose. The most common type is reticulate; however, the other ornamentation types are specific for the studied taxa. Anatomically, the structure and thickness of the pericarp parts and the endosperm and the size of the cotyledon are very important characteristics that disclose interspecific relations within the studied taxa. Recently, the number of algological studies in Turkish inland waters has increased remarkably. However, taxonomic and floristic studies on algae in the Euphrates basin are still scarce. This study contributes new information to the knowledge of the Turkish freshwater algal flora. Phytoplankton samples were collected from the Tatar Dam Reservoir in the Euphrates Basin between January 2016 and December 2016. Two taxa were recorded for first time and 14 rare taxa for the freshwater algae of Turkey were identified in this study. The new records belong to the phylum Bacillariophyta, whereas taxa considered as rare belong to the phyla Chlorophyta, Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Charophyta, Euglenophyta, and Bacillariophyta. The diatoms are one of the most important groups of organisms for biomonitoring studies. In Turkey, most previous applications of diatoms to water quality monitoring have focused on the pennate diatoms, with almost no attention given to the centric forms. The paper presents the centric diatoms in some river catchments in Central Anatolia (Konya closed catchment and Kızılırmak) and Western Anatolia (Marmara, Sakarya, Susurluk, Akarçay, Küçük Menderes, and Meriç-Ergene in the Marmara and Aegean regions). The survey of these catchments is based on samples collected between 2009 and 2013 from 33 different locations, including some springs from Türkmen Mountain and Domaniç forest, as well as small streams and big rivers of the Anatolian Peninsula. Two taxa, R. raphanistrum L. subsp. rostratus(DC.) Thell. and Campanula hierosolymitana Boiss., collected from southern Anatolia are described as a second records for the Flora of Turkey. Different taxonomists had collected these taxa from Turkey, but these collected samples were not identified correctly. These samples were not recorded in the first or sixth volume or the other 2 supplements of the Flora of Turkey in spite of these misidentifications having been published in different papers. In this paper, these taxa that are added to the Flora of Turkey are presented for the interest of Turkish taxonomists. This paper presents a taxonomic contribution to the genus Pyrus L. P. georgica and P. pseudosyriaca are reported from Turkey for the first time. The status of P. pseudosyriaca is discussed and it is treated as a new variety of Pyrus syriaca. Notes on the chorology, morphological descriptions, figures, and taxonomy are provided. Moreover, P. serikensis and P. boissieriana are reduced to synonyms of P. cordata. An endemic subspecies, P. elaeagrifolia subsp. kotschyana, is compared with the related species P. elaeagrifolia and it is reassessed at the species level based on morphology and distribution. This paper presents a systematic revision of Fritillaria L. (Liliaceae) in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The genus used to contain 22 taxa in the Mediterranean region, but in this study it has been evaluated on the basis of 23 taxa. We concluded that F. armena Boiss. and F. zagrica Stapf are synonyms of F. pinardii Boiss. Phylogenetic orders of F. forbesii Rix and F. kittaniae Sorger in the Flora of Turkey were changed. F. crassifolia Boiss. & Huet. subsp. crassifolia was suggested as an Irano-Turanian element. Minuartia turcica M.Koç (Caryophyllaceae) is described as a new species of sect. Minuartia. The specimens were collected from the village of Yukarıçiftlik in the district of Safranbolu (Karabük Province, Turkey). The new species is similar to Minuartia leucocephaloides, but the differences between the 2 species are discussed in this paper. This paper reports the re-discovery of Barbarea auriculata Hausskn. ex Bornm. var. auriculata (Brassicaceae), Onobrychis nitida Boiss. (Fabaceae), Onosma discedens Hausskn. ex Bornm. (Boraginaceae), and Silene oligotricha Hub.-Mor. (Caryophyllaceae). All of these taxa had been listed as Extinct (EX), according to the World Conservation Union Red List Categories. A check-list of the genus Biarum Schott in the Flora of Turkey is presented, with 10 taxa, of which 2 are endemic to Turkey. A list of taxonomical changes that have occurred since the publication of the Flora of Turkey, Supplement II is given. In addition, Biarum syriacum (Spreng.) This paper describes a floristic study of Akçadağ. The research was carried out between 2000 and 2002. During the study period, 2650 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined to include 891 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 738 species, 328 genera, and 70 families. The distribution of Campanula radula Fisch. in Turkey is recorded for the first time. Thirty-five taxa were defined as new records for the B9 square. The endemism rate of the area is 7.5% based on 67 taxa. The largest families are Asteraceae (142 taxa), Brassicaceae (69 taxa), and Fabaceae(68 taxa). The largest genera are Astragalus L. (29), Ranunculus L., (18) and Silene L. (17). The phytogeographic elements represented in the study area are as follows: Irano-Turanian 316 (35.4%), Euro-Siberian 89 (9.9%), and Mediterranean 26 (2.9%). When the flora of the area is analysed according to Raunkiaer's life forms, the results are as follows: hemicryptophytes 462 (51.8%), therophytes 183 (20.5%), cryptophytes 125 (14.0%), chamaephytes 94 (10.5%), and phanerophytes 27 (3%). Descriptions of 28 species in the present study were different in terms of some characteristics from the descriptions found in the Flora of Turkeyand in some cases different from the flora of neighbouring countries. This paper presents a floristic study of Pirreşit Mountain. The research was carried out in 1997 and 1998, and 3500 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined as 820 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 767 species, 309 genera, and 65 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (125 taxa), Poaceae (89 taxa), and Fabaceae (72 taxa). The largest genera were Astragalus L. (28), Silene L. (23), and CentaureaL. (16). The phytogeographic elements represented in the study area are as follows: Irano-Turanian 313 (38.2%), Euro-Siberian 78 (9.5%), and Mediterranean 18 (2.2%). Ferula parva Freyn & Bornm. was first collected from Central Anatolia (Turkey B5 Kayseri-Yozgat in declivibus apricis inter Kayseri et Yozgat, 1890) by Bornmuller. No specimens belonging to this species have been collected since the type and Andrasovszky specimens. When the Flora of Turkeywas being prepared, Dr. H. Peşmen considered this species imperfectly known; therefore, it was not included in the keys. In the present paper, diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. Natural sources used as folk medicines in Merzifon were investigated in this study. It was determined that 35 plant and 4 animal species together with 3 animal and 1 inorganic sources are being used as various preparations of folk medicines in Merzifon area. All the collected medicinal plants were identified and voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Pharmacy (HUEF). Local names, part(s) used, methods of preparation and traditional usages of folk medicines are given in this paper. Traditional herbal medicines were mostly used for gastrointestinal system diseases, heart and circulatory system disorders. When our findings were compared with previously published literatures on folk medicines in Turkey, new local names for 4 species and different usages for 6 plants were found. The silicoflagellate species Dictyocha antarctica Lohmann, Dictyocha crux Ehrenb. and the diatom species Nitzschia rectilonga Takano are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of the north-eastern Sea of Marmara (lat. 40µ 45.80` N - 40µ 58.00` N, long. 28µ 36.00` E - 29µ 13.60` E) and also from the coastal waters of Turkey. This paper describes a floristic study of Bozburun Mountain and its environs. The study was conducted between 1998 and 2002, during which time 2419 vascular plant samples were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the total flora was determined to consist of 645 taxa belonging to 341 genera and 86 families. The endemism rate of the 645 taxa was 16.1% (n = 104 taxa). The phytogeographical spectrum of the species was as follows: Mediterranean 207 (32.1%), Irano-Turanian 51 (7.9%) and Euro-Siberian elements 33 (5.1%). This paper describes a floristic study on Kirmir valley, between Güdül and Yesilöz district, in Ankara province. The study was carried out during 2000-2003 and 1040 vascular plant specimens were collected. Four hundred and forty-eight wild taxa belonging to 266 genera and 74 families were determined. Furthermore, as for cultivated plants, 45 taxa were determined. The total number of wild and cultivated plant species is 493. Thirty-two of the wild taxa are endemic to Turkey and the rate of endemism is 7.1%. The 3 largest families are Asteraceae (43 taxa), Brassicaceae (40 taxa), and Fabaceae (37 taxa). The largest 3 genera are Alyssum L. with 10 taxa, Veronica L. with 7 taxa and Salvia L., Astragalus L. and Vicia L. with 6 taxa. The phytogeographical distribution of the wild species is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 73 (16.3%), Mediterranean elements 46 (10.3%) and Euro-Siberian elements 43 (9.6%). Forty-seven species are new records for the A4 square. Similarities between the taxa and ratio of phytogeographical elements of Kirmir valley and those of 10 other studies performed near our study area were compared using clustering analysis. This paper describes a floristic study of Bitlis river basin. The research was carried out from 2001 and 2003 to 2150 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined to include 925 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 770 species, 386 genera and 85 families. One hundred and seventy-nine taxa were defined as new records for the B9 square. The endemism rate of the area is 6.8% based on 63 taxa. The largest families are Asteraceae (109 taxa), Fabaceae (101 taxa) and Poaceae (77 taxa). The largest genera are Trifolium L. (27), Astragalus L. (22) and Silene L. (18). The phytogeographic elements are represented in the study area as follows: Irano-Turanian 292 (31.8%), Mediterranean 81 (8.7%) and Euro-Siberian 46 (4.9%). When the flora of the area is analysed by Raunkiaer’s life form system, the results are as follows: hemicryptophytes 345 (37.3%), therophytes 308 (33.3%), chamaephytes 103 (11.1%), cryptophytes 101 (10.9%) and phanerophytes 68 (7.35%). The descriptions of 29 species in our study were different in terms of some characteristics from the descriptions in the Flora of Turkey and in some cases from the flora of neighbouring countries. This paper deals with the Old World species of Eryngium L. which grow mostly in regions with a Mediterranean type climate. Two centers of diversity are visible: one in the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco), and the other one in South-West Asia. Distribution maps are presented for several species from South-West Asia, which is probably the genus' most important center of diversity. A preliminary new classification of the genus Eryngium is presented, including a new combination (Eryngium subgenus Fruticosum (Wolff) Wörz stat. nov.). Both the species and the sectional diversity are conspicuously present in Turkey, where 9 of 14 sections occur. This sectional diversity decreases in an easterly direction towards Central Asia. Five Mediterranean species are much more closely related to some North American Eryngiums than to the other Old World ones. Not related to the American sections is Sect. Palmito H. This paper describes a floristic study of Kizilda&gcaron; (Isparta/Turkey) and its environs. The study was carried out during 19931996 and 1515 vascular plant samples were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the total flora has been determined as 786 taxa belonging to 770 species, 371 genera and 84 families. The endemism rate of the area is 15.5% for the 122 taxa. The largest 3 families are Asteraceae (89 species), Fabaceae (65 species) and Poaceae (62 species). The largest genera are Ranunculus L. (13 species), Allium L. (13 species) and Veronica L. (12 species). The phytogeographical spectrum of the species is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 143 (18.19%), Mediterranean elements 140 (17.81%) and Euro-Siberian elements 40 (5.08%). One hundred and seventy-three species are new records from B3 and C3 squares. This paper describes the planktonic diatom flora of the Sultan Sazlliĝi marshes, Kayseri. Samples were collected systematically from the marshes over a period of 1.5 years from three stations. The diatom flora of Sultan Sazliĝi is rich in terms of species and varieties, which are similar to those from many parts of Turkey. A total of 75 taxa of diatoms were identified. The diversity of species at freshwater stations was higher, than that of the brackish water station. This paper deals with a fioristic study of KaragOney Mountain (Kirlkkale/Turkey). The study was carried out during 19891991 and 2500 vascular plant samples were collected. Eight hundred and sixty-eight taxa of 378 genera have been identified. Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Poaceae are the largest families and Astragalus L., Silene L. and Salvia L. are the largest genera in the area. The endemism rate of the area is 13.1%. The classification of the taxa into three main chorological units shows that Irano-Turanian elements are predominant. Threatened categories were proposed for 109 taxa according to IUCN categories.
