In this study, Turkish Cousinia species were examined in point of chromosome number and morphology. To our knowledge, this work is the first comprehensive chromosomal study regarding Turkish Cousinia as a whole, especially for endemics. As consistent with previous reports, the chromosome numbers are mostly 2n = 26 and have been determined also as 2n = 24 for only the members of Cynaroideae and Sphaerocephalae sections. An interesting result of this paper is that there is not any polyploid species in this taxonomic group and all of them are diploids. Concerning the chromosome evolution of the Cousinia species, we concluded that merely dysploidy is effective within the genus and evolutionally a unipolar reduction goes on in the basic chromosome number in speciation (from 13 to 12). In terms of general chromosomal information, the chromosomes of the genus consist of metacentric and submetacentric types and they could be categorized in small category according to Lima De Faria classification (0.67-3.43). According to chromosomal indices used in this paper, while most species have symmetrical chromosomes, fewer have asymmetrical ones. From this point, it could be said that Cousinia stapfiana could be assessed as the most evolved taxa in karyomorphology according to the average of all indexes used in here. Besides, Cousinia bicolor, Cousinia birandiana, and Cousinia sintenisii are species having the most primitive chromosome within the genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achillea alimeana Semiz & Uysal sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), was described, diagnosed and illustrated as a new species. It was collected from Akdağ Mountains in Denizli Province. In this paper, the diagnostic characters of A. alimeana and its similar species were discussed in the morphological, palynological and molecular findings. Tragopogon porrifolius occurs in Turkey with 3 taxonomically confused subspecies: T. porrifolius subsp. eriospermus, T. porrifolius subsp. longirostris, and T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus. In the present paper, T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus endemic to Turkey is raised at specific level based on morphological and molecular analysis. After detailed assessment of original herbarium specimens and literature studies, we found that this name is not typified yet. Thus, a lectotype is provided together with an emended diagnosis; synonym, distribution map, and conservation status for the first time. The present study describes a new species Dorycnium vuralii (Fabaceae) from Çankırı, Türkiye. The new species is compared morphologically to the taxa of sect. Bonjeanea and sect. Dorycnium along with pollen micromorphology, leaflet, and seed micromorphology. The geographical distribution of Dorycnium vuralii is mapped. The phylogenetic relationships between the new species and other closely related species in the genus are inferred based on DNA data from both cpDNA and nrDNA (rbcL1&ITS). Although phylogenetic implications are different in the two DNA barcoding regions, D. vuralii is shown to be a new species in both molecular data. This paper describes a floristic study of Bozburun Mountain and its environs. The study was conducted between 1998 and 2002, during which time 2419 vascular plant samples were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the total flora was determined to consist of 645 taxa belonging to 341 genera and 86 families. The endemism rate of the 645 taxa was 16.1% (n = 104 taxa). The phytogeographical spectrum of the species was as follows: Mediterranean 207 (32.1%), Irano-Turanian 51 (7.9%) and Euro-Siberian elements 33 (5.1%). Of the species we sampled, 311 (48.2%) were widespread and the phytogeographical regions of 10 (1.5%) were unknown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural sources used as folk medicines in Merzifon were investigated in this study. It was determined that 35 plant and 4 animal species together with 3 animal and 1 inorganic sources are being used as various preparations of folk medicines in Merzifon area. All the collected medicinal plants were identified and voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Pharmacy (HUEF). Local names, part(s) used, methods of preparation and traditional usages of folk medicines are given in this paper. Traditional herbal medicines were mostly used for gastrointestinal system diseases, heart and circulatory system disorders. When our findings were compared with previously published literatures on folk medicines in Turkey, new local names for 4 species and different usages for 6 plants were found. Moreover, Scorzonera eriphora DC. and Beta trigyna Waldst & Kit. were found to be used as folk medicines in Turkey for the first time in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the Old World species of Eryngium L. which grow mostly in regions with a Mediterranean type climate. Two centers of diversity are visible: one in the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco), and the other one in South-West Asia. Distribution maps are presented for several species from South-West Asia, which is probably the genus' most important center of diversity. A preliminary new classification of the genus Eryngium is presented, including a new combination (Eryngium subgenus Fruticosum (Wolff) Wörz stat. nov.). Both the species and the sectional diversity are conspicuously present in Turkey, where 9 of 14 sections occur. This sectional diversity decreases in an easterly direction towards Central Asia. Five Mediterranean species are much more closely related to some North American Eryngiums than to the other Old World ones. Not related to the American sections is Sect. Palmito H. Wolff, although its species bear grass-like leaves similar to some Eryngiums from South America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stachys species show high morphological diversity and their main diagnostic characteristics are calyx and corolla length, ratio of tooth to calyx, and verticillaster arrangement. This manuscript describes and provides detailed morphological, micromorphological and molecular information about a new species, Stachys istanbulensis Ö. Güner, and its close relatives. The new species resembles S. recta complex, but is distinguished by its procumbent flowering stems, shorter calyx and teeth, congested verticillasters, creamy yellow corolla and oblong-obovoid nutlets. Moreover, the periclinal surfaces of S. istanbulensis nutlets are usually wrinkled, while those of S. recta are smooth. In addition, nrITS DNA region sequences were used to find the relationships of the new species to its close relatives and determine its correct phylogenetic position within section Olisa. Therefore, the newly described S. istanbulensis and its close relatives S. recta and S. atherocalyx comprise a clade (III). With this addition, the number of Turkish Stachys species has reached 94 (121 taxa), and 65 (53.7%) of these taxa are endemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astragalus nurhakdagensis, a new species from the south of Turkey was described, illustrated, and compared to the closest taxa Astragalus hirsutus, A. dumanii and A. cataonicus from which it is set apart by a longer calyx length (13-14 mm) and calyx teeth (7-9 mm, longer than tube), white corolla colour, longer bracts (13-15 mm) and black hairy stripes below the stem nodes. In A. hirsutus, the calyx length (6-10 mm) and calyx teeth are much smaller (2-3 mm long, shorter than tube), with yellow corolla colour and without black hairy stripes. It also differs from A. dumanii with its longer stipules 9-13 mm (not 5-8 mm), bracts 13-15 mm (not 4-6 mm), calyx length 13-14 mm (not 7-10 mm) and calyx teeth 7-9 mm (not 2-4 mm), and also with spreading hairs (not adpressed) on the calyx and 7-9 pairs of leaflets (not 3-7 pairs). It is also differentiated from A. cataonicus with a white corolla colour (not lilac to pink), longer stipule 9-13 mm (not 5-7 mm), bracts 13-15 mm (not 6-12 mm), and longer calyx teeth 7-9 mm (not 5-7 mm). Prolate (A. nurhakdagensis, A. hirsutus and A. cataonicus) and subprolate (A. dumanii) shapes were determined in the tricolporate pollen grains. Perforate, granulate, and reticulate ornamentation types were observed in the pollen grains in SEM. The seed shapes were reniform-globose in A. nurhakdagensis and A. dumanii, whereas they were reniform in A. hirsutus and A. cataonicus. Surface ornamentation of the seeds differed slightly: rugulate in A. nurhakdagensis and A. hirsutus, reticulate-rugulate in A. dumanii and reticulate-striate in A. cataonicus. Asperula cankiriense B.Şahin & Sağıroğlu, a new species discovered in the central Anatolian region of Turkey (Çankırı), is described herein. A. cankiriense is similar to Asperula bornmuelleri Velen. However, A. cankiriense differs mainly in its habitus, stem, leaves, and inflorescence features. In this study, the diagnostic morphological features, distribution, habitat and ecology, etymology, conservation status, and taxonomic features of the new species are discussed. Additionally, pollen micromorphological characteristics of A. cankiriense and A. bornmuelleri are examined and compared using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The pollen grains are subprolate, aperture type 6-7 or rarely 8 zonocolpate and heterosincolpate and their exine ornamentation is microechinate-perforate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Palynological characters of 20 taxa belonging to the Turkish subgenus Cyanus were studied in details using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of the subgenus Cyanus were tricolporate or syncolporate, subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, 26.15 to 53 μm in polar size, 22.84 to 46.86 μm in equatorial size, isopolar, and radially symmetrical. The only type of pollen grain ornamentation observed was scabrate-perforate. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to investigate the relationships of the studied Cyanus taxa. As a result of the phenetic analyses, the polar axis, equatorial axis, colpus length, and apocolpium were found to be significant palynomorphological characteristics for taxonomic use. In this study, the synopsis of the taxa of the genus Trigonella in Turkey is presented. It is represented with 34 taxa in Turkey. The name of Trigonella coelesyriaca was misspelled to Flora of Turkey and the correct name of this species, Trigonella caelesyriaca, was given in this study. The endemic Trigonella raphanina has been reduced to synonym of T. cassia and T. balansae is reduced to synonym of T. corniculata. In addition, T. spruneriana var. sibthorpii is reevaluated as a distinct species. Lectotypification was designated for T. capitata, T. spruneriana and T. velutina. Neotypification was decided for T. cylindracea and T. cretica species. Trigonella taxa used to be represented by 52 taxa in the Flora of Turkey. However, they have later been evaluated by different studies under 32 species (34 taxa) in Turkey. Meyer separated Thlaspi into 12 genera, specifically using the seed-coat anatomy. Currently, only 4 species have been retained in Thlaspi s.str and all of the other species were divided into other genera, one of which was Thlaspiceras F.K.Mey. Based on recent molecular studies and morphological features, Al-Shehbaz (2014) suggested recognizing all of Meyer's segregates under Noccaea and Thlaspi s.str. All of Meyer's Thlaspiceras species, namely Th. dolichocarpum (Zohary) F.K.Mey., Th. eigii (Zohary) F.K.Mey., Th. crassifolium A.Huber-Morath andF.K.Mey., Th. bovis F.K.Mey., Th. oxyceras (Boiss.) F.K.Mey., Th. capricornutum F.K.Mey., Th. hubermorathii F.K.Mey., Th. cappadocicum (Boiss. and Balansa) F.K.Mey., Th. triangulare F.K.Mey., Th. rechingeri F.K.Mey., and Th. elegans (Boissier) F.K.Mey., grow in Turkey or on the Syrian side of the border between Turkey and Syria. Meyer classified Thlaspiceras taxa under 3 sections: Dolichocarpa F.K.Mey., Thlaspiceras, and Acornuta F.K.Mey. The current study makes use of the above mentioned species, except for Th. oxyceras, Th. capricornutum F.K.Mey., Th. dolichocarpum (Zohary) F.K.Mey., and Th. bovis F.K.Mey. The plant materials used in this research were collected in Turkey between 2014 and 2016. Specimens were identified according to Meyer's identification and named according to Meyer. A total of 12 inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers, with 52 reliable polymorphic bands, were used in the cluster analyses. The dendrogram obtained supported all of the previously proposed classifications. A detailed discussion regarding previous classifications of the group and the clusters revealed using the ISSR markers is also provided herein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypericum turcicum (Hypericaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Beypazarı in Ankara Province in Northwest Anatolia, Turkey. The new species belongs to the section Oligostema, and it is closely related to H. aucheri. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, ecology, and pollen and seed morphology are presented in this study. In addition, this study evaluates H. kazdaghense, which was previously accepted as a synonym of H. aucheri, as a distinct species and discusses the similarities and differences between H. turcicum and H. aucheri. Five Aspergillus Fr.: Fr. species and 3 varieties were described from the point of view of colonial and morphological characteristics. These species and varietes are isolated from soil, grape and sultana raisins from vineyards in Manisa and İzmir provinces (Turkey).
