In this study, conducted on the selection of the most suitable method of determining the available sulfur content of soils where cotton is grown in the Coastal Aegean Region of Türkiye, soil and leaf samples were taken from a total of 40 cotton plantations in five different locations in the Coastal Aegean Region and Gediz Basin. Various physical and chemical characteristics of the soil’s samples, which were taken from a depth of 0-30 cm, were determined, and the available sulfur contents were determined with the use of seven different extraction solutions. The extraction method or methods by which the highest correlation or correlations were obtained between the available sulfur content of the soils and leaf sulfur contents of the plants in the same plantation were assessed as the most suitable methods. According to the results of the study, the highest soil-leaf correlation was obtained by soil extraction with Ca(H2PO4)2 solution, followed, in order, by the NH4OAc, KH2PO4, cold water and NaCl methods. No significant correlation was found between the amounts of sulfur determined by extraction with CaCl2 and KCl solutions and leaf sulfur contents. It was concluded that the most suitable methods for the determination of available sulfur in the soils of the Aegean Coastal Region where cotton is grown were the extraction methods using Ca(H2PO4)2 and NH4OAc solutions.

This study was conducted to examine the soil fertility of the Büyük Menderes Basin, where wheat is widely cultivated. Soil samples were taken from 50 different points at a depth of 0-30 cm and various physical and chemical properties and amounts of nutrient elements were determined. With regard to the results of the study, the soils were generally sandy-clay-loam in texture, with slightly alkaline reaction, limy, rich in organic matter and showed no risk of salinity. The examined soils were found to be insufficient as 34% for total N, 14% for available K, 26% Mg, 10% Fe, 94% Zn and 98% Mn contents while all of the soils were determined as sufficient in terms of available P, Cu and Ca contents. When relationships between nutrient elements and soil physical-chemical properties were examined, negative correlations were found between soil pH and EC, organic matter, total N, available K, Zn; lime contents and available Mg, Fe, Cu; clay and available K and Mn contents. The positive correlations were found between EC and available K, Ca and Zn; organic matter % and total N, available K, Cu, Zn and Mn; sand % and available Mn; clay % and available Fe contents. Investigation of relationships between plant nutrients demonstrated that, there were positive correlations between total N and available K, Cu, Zn, Mn; available P and Zn; available K and Cu, Zn, Mn; available Ca and Fe; available Mg and Fe, Cu; available Fe and Cu, Mn; available Cu and Mn contents. The results of the study showed that attention should be paid to fertilization programs to fertilization with Zn and Mn, which were found to be insufficient in the greater part of the basin’s soils, and also to nitrogen deficiency is observed, as this directly affects the protein content of wheat.

The aim of this study was to determine the yield and various quality characteristics of two different strawberry cultivars (Fragaria x ananassa var. Festival and Camarosa), grown in the ecological conditions of Sultanhisar, Aydın, Turkey. The study was conducted over two years, in ten randomly selected open grown plantations for each of the two cultivars. When the fruits reached harvest maturity, they were harvested and their yield values, mean fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit firmness, colour, pH, titrable acidity, water-soluble dry matter, vitamin C content, total antioxidant capacity and total phenolics were determined. According to the results obtained, yield values fell in the second year of the study, but mean fruit weight, diameter and length increased. Similarly, the fruit firmness of both varieties was considerably greater in the second year, and these differences between the years were found to be statistically significant. While the highest antioxidant capacity and phenolic content were obtained from the Festival cultivar, the highest vitamin C content was found in the Camarosa cultivar. The changes of total antioxidant capacity and the amount of total phenolics according to years of both varieties were found to be statistically significant.

Gediz Havzası yaygın tütün tarımı yapılan toprakların verimlilik durumlarının incelenmesine yönelik yapılan bu çalışmada, 60 farklı noktadan 0-30 cm derinlikten alınan toprak örneklerinin bazı fiziksel-kimyasal özellikleri ile besin elementi içerikleri belirlenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre topraklar; genel olarak kumlu-tın bünyeli, hafif alkalin reaksiyonlu, kireçli, organik maddece iyi ve tuzluluk yönünden herhangi bir tehlike içermemektedir. Yöre toprakları genel olarak değerlendirildiğinde, %94’ünde toplam azot %62’sinde alınabilir K yetersiz iken, %70’inde alınabilir P, %85’inde alınabilir Ca ve %56’sında alınabilir Mg yeterli bulunmuştur. Toprakların genel olarak alınabilir Fe (%83’ü) ve alınabilir Cu (%92’si) kapsamları yeterli iken alınabilir Zn (%86’sı) ve alınabilir Mn (%85’i) içerikleri yetersizdir. İncelenen toprakların fiziksel-kimyasal özellikleri ve besin elementleri arasındaki ikili ilişkilerde, pH-Elektriksel İletkenlik (EC), pH-kireç, pH-silt, pH-kil, pH-K, pH-Ca; EC-N, EC-P, EC-K, EC-Ca, EC-Cu, EC-Zn; organik madde (OM)-N, OM-P, OM-Ca, OM-Cu, OM-Zn; % kum-Fe; kil-K, Kil-Ca, Kil-Mg, Kil-Cu içerikleri arasında pozitif; pH-kum, pH-Fe, pH-Zn ve pH-Mn; OM-kum; % kum-kil, kum-silt, kum-K, kum-Ca, kum- Cu; kil-Fe içerikleri arasında önemli negatif korelasyonlar bulunmuştur. Besin elementleri açısından toprakların N-P, N-Ca, N-Cu, N-Zn; P-Cu, K-Mg, Mg-Fe, Mg-Cu, Fe-Cu, Fe-Zn, Fe-Mn, Cu-Zn, Cu-Mn, Zn-Cu, Zn-Mn arasında pozitif; Ca-Fe arasında ise güçlü negatif ilişkiler belirlenmiştir. Tütünde kalite özelliklerini doğrudan etkileyen azot, Zn ve Mn elementlerinin yöre topraklarında yetersiz olması nedeniyle yörede yapılacak gübreleme programlarında bu durumun göz önünde bulundurulmasında yarar vardır.
