This note revisits a paper from Velan and Florian (Velan, S., M. Florian. 2002. A note on the entropy solutions of the hydrodynamic model of traffic flow. Transportation Sci. 36(4) 435-446) dealing with the entropy condition in traffic flow models. It aims to clarify the application of this condition for nondifferentiable fundamental diagrams and then to correct some misunderstandings that appear in the above-mentioned paper. This note clearly exhibits that the nonsmoothness of the fundamental diagram does not change the properties of the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) solutions: (i) existence of a unique entropy solution and (ii) nonuniqueness of weak solutions. These precisions are important because piecewise linear fundamental diagrams appear to accurately fit with experimental observations and cannot be disproved on an alleged mathematical basis. This paper deals with sensitivity analysis of static traffic user equilibrium problems. We apply some recently developed sensitivity analysis techniques for generalized equations to analyze the behavior of the equilibrium arc flow of such a problem when both the arc cost function and the travel demand vary. Our methods permit calculation of semiderivatives under general conditions and of derivatives under more restrictive conditions; we calculate the semiderivatives by solving a linear traffic user equilibrium problem and the derivatives by matrix multiplication together with the solution of a linear equation the dimension of which is at most the number of arcs. Insertion heuristics have proven to be popular methods for solving a variety of vehicle routing and scheduling problems. In this paper, we focus on the impact of incorporating complicating constraints on the efficiency of insertion heuristics. The basic insertion heuristic for the standard vehicle routing problem has a time complexity of O(n³). However, straightforward implementations of handling complicating constraints lead to an undesirable time complexity of O(n4. We demonstrate that with careful implementation it is possible, in most cases, to maintain the O⊃3 complexity or, in a few cases, increase the time complexity to O(n⊃3 log n). The complicating constraints we consider in this paper are time windows, shift time limits, variable delivery quantities, fixed and variable delivery times, and multiple routes per vehicle. Little attention has been given to some of these complexities (with time windows being the notable exception), which are common in practice and have a significant impact on the feasibility of a schedule as well as the efficiency of insertion heuristics. This paper discusses the uniqueness of user equilibrium in transportation networks with heterogeneous commuters. Daganzo (1983) proved the uniqueness of (stochastic) user equilibrium when commuters have heterogeneous tastes over possible paths, but identical disutility functions from time costs. We first show, by example, that his result may not apply in general networks if disutility functions are allowed to differ. However, for "simple" transportation networks, we show that user equilibrium is always unique and weakly Pareto efficient (cf. the Braess example) for a general class of utility functions. We investigate whether this result applies to more general networks. We also show that user equilibrium is unique in a dynamic bottleneck model with a simple network. We discuss an interesting relationship between the following two problems: the existence of user equilibrium in a finite model and the uniqueness of user equilibrium in a continuum model. A bilevel programming approach is used to tackle an optimization problem for area traffic control and equilibrium flows. The signal timing plan is defined by common cycle time, and by starts and durations of greens. The system performance index is defined as the sum of a weighted linear combination of rate of delay and number of stops per unit time for all traffic streams, which is evaluated by the traffic model from TRANSYT. User equilibrium traffic assignment is formulated as a variational inequality problem. Approximate mathematical expressions for various components of the performance index and the average delay to a vehicle at the downstream junction in the TRANSYT model for both undersaturated and oversaturated links have been derived. For a locally optimal search, the gradient projection method is used in deciding whether feasible descent directions leading to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point, which is potentially a local optimum, can be identified. A global search heuristic is proposed in this paper by which successively better Karush-Kuhn-Tucker points can be found with reasonable computation effort. The mixed search procedure, including the locally optimal search and global search heuristic, is proposed. Encouraging results for Allsop and Charlesworth's network have confirmed that the approximately optimizing mixed search procedure in solving the area traffic control optimization problem can achieve substantially better results than does the nonoptimizing calculations of mutually consistent signal timings and link flows. In traffic systems where driving is on the left, right-turning movements tend to be difficult to efficiently accommodate at signal controlled junctions. A hook turn is one potential solution for this. A hook turn is where a right turn is made from the nearside lane rather than an offside lane at a four-leg signalised junction. After entering the junction, the turning vehicle waits at a nearside position in front of the side road stop line, and then proceeds toward the exit arm when the side road signal turns green. The research described in this paper uses microscopic simulation modelling in an innovative way to compare the traffic performance of a hypothetical hook-turn junction with an equivalent conventional junction with opposed right turns. The simulation model evaluated traffic performance under various combinations of demand flow, turning proportions, and signal timings. It was found that hook turns reduced delays to through traffic from the same approach in nearly all cases. Overall junction performance depended on the scale of any increased delays to left-turning traffic and side road traffic resulting from the hook-turn movement. It is concluded that hook turns could be used much more widely than at present--including where driving is on the right--offering significant operational benefits in the right circumstances. Airline decision makers cancel flights in operations because of disruptions. When canceling a flight, they usually cancel a cycle, a sequence of flights that begins and ends at the same airport. Consequently, a fleet assignment and aircraft rotation with many short cycles is frequently less sensitive to a flight cancellation than one with only a few short cycles. In this paper, we determine a lower bound for the number of short cycles using the hub connectivity of a fleet assignment, and we present fleet-assignment models (FAMs) that embed many short cycles and reduce hub connectivity within a solution. We show that solutions to such models perform better in operations than those of traditional FAMs that minimize planned operating cost and passenger spill. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bounds and approximate formulae are developed for the average optimum distance of the transportation linear programming (TLP) problem with homogeneously, but randomly distributed points and demands in a region of arbitrary shape. It is shown that if the region size grows with a fixed density of points, then the cost per item is bounded from above in 3 + dimensions (3 +-D), but not in 1-D and 2-D. Lower bounds are also developed, based on a mild monotonicity conjecture. Computer simulations confirm the conjecture and yield approximate formulae. These formulae turn out to have the same functional form as the upper bounds. Curiously, the monotonicity conjecture implies that the cost per item does not depend on zone shape asymptotically, as problem size increases,for 2+-D problems but it does in 1-D. Therefore, the 2-D case can be viewed as a transition case that shares some of the properties of 1-D (unbounded cost) and some of the properties of 3-D (shape independence). The results are then extended to more general network models with subadditive link costs. It is found that if the cost functions have economies of scale, then the cost per item is bounded in 2-D. This explains the prevalence of the "last mile" effect in many logistics applications. Markov traffic-assignment models explicitly represent the day-to-day evolving interaction between traffic congestion and drivers information acquisition and choice processes. Such models can, in principle, be used to investigate traffic flows in stochastic equilibrium, yielding estimates of the equilibrium mean and covariance matrix of link or route traffic flows. However, in general these equilibrium moments cannot be written down in closed form. While Monte Carlo simulations of the assignment process may be used to produce "empirical" estimates, this approach can be extremely computationally expensive if reliable results (relatively free of Monte Carlo error) are to be obtained. In this paper an alternative method of computing the equilibrium distribution is proposed, applicable to the class of Markov models with linear exponential learning filters. Based on asymptotic results, this equilibrium distribution may be approximated by a Gaussian process, meaning that the problem reduces to determining the first two multivariate moments in equilibrium. The first of these moments, the mean flow vector, may be estimated by a conventional traffic-assignment model. The second, the flow covariance matrix, is estimated through various linear approximations, yielding an explicit expression. The proposed approximations are seen to operate well in a number of illustrative examples. The contribution of the paper is a complete analysis of the sensitivity of elastic demand traffic (Wardrop) equilibria. The existence of a directional derivative of the equilibrium solution (link flow, least travel cost, demand) in any direction is given a characterization, and the same is done for its gradient. The gradient, if it exists, is further interpreted as a limiting case of the gradient of the logit-based SUE solution, as the dispersion parameter tends to infinity. In the absence of the gradient, we show how to compute a subgradient. All these computations (directional derivative, (sub) gradient) are performed by solving similar traffic equilibrium problems with affine link cost and demand functions, and they can be performed by the same tool as (or one similar to) the one used for the original traffic equilibrium model; this fact is of clear advantage when applying sensitivity analysis within a bilevel (or mathematical program with equilibrium constraints, MPEC) application, such as for congestion pricing, OD estimation, or network design. Queue overflow is a critical issue in developing queue prediction technologies for applications in Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS). Conventional queue prediction methods, however, are limited to incident-free queue length prediction where traffic arrivals can be readily obtained using detectors. Despite the problems posed by queue overflow, studies addressing queue-overflow issues, or for predicting queue overflows beyond detectors, appear inadequate. This paper describes an advanced methodology which uses a stochastic system modeling approach and random processes for predicting queue lengths beyond detectors in real time. Lane changing is taken into account in developing the queue-overflow prediction model because lane changing accompanies queue overflow in most cases. A discrete-time, nonlinear stochastic system is specified for modeling the queues and lane changes beyond detectors during queue-overflow occurrence. The noise terms of the recursive equations of the model account for the effects of queues and a variety of arriving volumes on vehicular lane-changing maneuvers during queue-overflow occurrence. The unknown traffic arrivals beyond detectors are predicted employing random processes. In addition, a recursive estimation algorithm for predicting real-time queue overflows is developed utilizing the extended Kalman filtering technique. Preliminary test results indicate that the proposed methodology is promising for real-time prediction of queue overflows. The predicted queue overflows can be used not only in understanding the phenomenon of lane traffic patterns during queue-overflow occurrence, but also in developing related advanced technologies such as real-time road traffic congestion control and management systems. This paper presents a theory of traffic equilibrium which involves responsive signal control policies; in this theory drivers' route choices and the control policy's choice of green times are treated in a symmetrical manner. The central theme of the paper is the iterative optimization assignment algorithm. This algorithm may be considered as a means of calculating equilibria which are consistent with a given responsive control policy. But it may also be regarded as a highly idealized model of the day to day dynamics of drivers' route choices when a responsive signal setting policy is employed; on "day" 1 the signals are held fixed and drivers settle down to an equilibrium flow pattern, on "day 2" the flow pattern is held fixed and the signals are updated according to the control policy for the fixed flow pattern, on "day" 3 the signals are held fixed and drivers settle down to an equilibrium flow pattern.... We state natural but strong conditions on the responsive control policy which guarantee that this algorithm is bound to converge to a convex set of (flow, control) pairs such that (i) the flow is a user equilibrium and (ii) the control parameters satisfy the responsive control policy; and we give a proof of convergence under these conditions--we do not seek to minimize total travel cost. Our conditions involve the delay or cost formula used; with the BPR cost formula, modified in a natural way to allow for green times, the traditional policy of choosing control parameters which minimize delay for the observed traffic pattern does satisfy these conditions in full. This paper attempts to provide some insight into the structure of' a large class of fleet scheduling problems. Scheduling under fixed due date constraints is shown to be easily solved using a new formulation of the problem. Scheduling under flexible due date constraints is shown to be inherently complex, and strong evidence is given for asserting that no efficient (polynomial bounded) algorithm, exists for solving this problem exactly. In this paper we formulate a basic model for two-dimensional timedependent traffic flow. The model is designed specifically to relate to the morning peak period of commuter traffic, for which the underlying ideas are relatively unencumbered. The time variation of the point value of the 'travel intensity at a given time point' is considered and also the global 'wave movement' that peak hour traffic will exhibit—the peak hour will not be entirely synchronous at all points over the city. It is found that under stanrdard assumptions as to rouling and the location of trip end points, a strong peak hour occurs in the form of a shock wave. This paper presents a general purpose algorithm for real-time traffic control at an intersection. Our methodology, based on dynamic programming, allows optimization of a variety of performance indices such as delay, stops and queue lengths. Furthermore, optimal phase sequencing is a direct by-product of this new approach. These features make the new methodology a powerful tool for intersection control. We demonstrate the usefulness of the approach by a simulation experiment in which our intersection control algorithm is interfaced with a well established simulation package called TRAF-NETSIM. Our study compares the controlled optimization of phases methodology with fully-actuated as well as semi-actuated control. The modeling of traffic control systems for solving such problems as surface street signalization, dynamic traffic assignment, etc., typically results in the appearance of a conditional function. For example, the consistent representation of the outflow discharge at an approach of a signalized intersection implies a function that is conditional on the signal indication and the prevailing traffic conditions. Representing such functions by some sort of constraint(s), ideally linear, so as to be considered in the context of a mathematical programming problem, is a nontrivial task, most often resolved by adopting restrictive assumptions regarding real-life process behavior. To address this general problem, we develop two methodologies that are largely based on analogies from mathematical logic that provide a practical device for the transformation of a specific form of a linear conditional piecewise function into a mixed integer model (MIM), i.e., a set of mixed-integer linear inequality constraints. We show the applicability of these methodologies to transforming into a MIM virtually every possible conditional piecewise function that can be found when one is modeling transportation systems based on the widely adopted dispersion-and-store and cell transmission traffic flow models, as well as to analyzing existing MIMs for identifying and eliminating redundancies. An important strategic phase in the planning process of a railway operator is the development of a line plan, i.e., a set of routes (paths) in a network of tracks, operated at a given hourly frequency. We consider a model formulation of the line-planning problem where total operating costs are to be minimized. This model is solved with a branch-and-cut approach, for which we develop a variety of valid inequalities and reduction methods. Under relatively general assumptions a unique deterministic departure-time user equilibrium with a finite departure rate exists in the bottleneck model with drivers who differ in their unit costs of travel time, preferred times of arrival, and schedule delay cost functions. Existence requires that schedule delay cost functions be upper semicontinuous with respect to arrival time, and that schedule delay costs decline at a rate smaller than the unit cost of travel time. Uniqueness requires, more restrictively, that schedule delay cost functions be continuous. Several properties of equilibrium trip cost functions are derived for n groups of users with Ni in group i. The trip cost of a user in group i is a nondecreasing function of each Nj, but typically rises more quickly with respect to N i than Nj, j ≠i. The multiclass network equilibrium problem is expressed in general as a nonmonotone, asymmetric, variational inequality problem. We show that in spite of the nonmonotonicity of the cost operator, the problem may actually satisfy a weaker property, induced by the hierarchical nature of the travel cost interactions. This property allows a natural decomposition approach, not otherwise available, that admits provably convergent algorithms.
