The article focuses on the nineteenth-century philosophical theories regarding universal concepts held by American philosopher and mathematician Charles S. Peirce. The author focuses on Peirce's semiotic writings from 1860 to 1891 regarding the use of proper names in the logic of relatives. The article also discusses logical formalism, sytax, semantics, the requirements of proof theory, predicates of quantificational logic, Peirce's paper titled "Logic of Relatives," English philosopher and mathematician George Boole, and German philosopher and mathematician Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege.
