Objective: The driver's inability to fully absorb and react to operational cues while driving is like boiling a frog in warm water. With intermittent, low-volume information, drivers can underreact by ignoring these minor but continuous changes. This paper aims to provide an opportunity to test the effects of intermittently occurring low-volume information on drivers., Methods: A real vehicle test with naturalistic driving was used to collect driving speed data from 40 drivers on a highway tunnel section in Chongqing, China, where nine tunnels are located. Drivers were classified into three categories according to the degree of compliance of their driving speed with the speed limit required by traffic signs, and drivers were analyzed in terms of their sensitivity to traffic signs and their reaction to driving maneuvers., Results: Conservative drivers are the most absorbent of low-volume intermittent information, and the cumulative effect of the frog effect does not exceed 2.00 km; eager drivers tend to ignore this information, and the cumulative effect of the frog effect reaches 2.91 km; and the general type of driver is in the middle of these two types of drivers, and the frog effect gradually penetrates the driving speed in a weakly increasing manner, up to a maximum of 9.8 km., Conclusion: At the beginning of a journey, drivers are most sensitive to traffic signs, and low-volume intermittent information can also play a role in guiding driving operations effectively at this time. However, as the driving distance increases, the effect of the frog effect on different types of drivers gradually increases, even exceeding the effect caused by the black-and-white hole effect, especially when driving in tunnel groups. Considering the driving characteristics of different types of drivers to improve the deployment of low-volume intermittent information and reduce the distance of the frog effect can effectively improve driving safety.

Objective: The effect of traffic signs on the behavior of drivers is not completely understood. Knowing about how humans process the meaning of signs (not just by learning but instinctively) will improve reaction time and decision making when traveling. The economic, social, and psychological consequences of car accidents are well known.Methods: This study sounds out which traffic signs are more ergonomic for participants, from a cognitive point of view, and determines, at the same time, their effect in participants' movement trajectories in a driving simulation task.Results: Results point out that the signs least representative of their meaning produce a greater deviation from the center of the road than the most representative ones.Conclusions: This study encourages both an in-depth analysis of the effect on movement of roadside signs and the study of how this effect can be modified by the context in which these signs are presented (with the aim to move the research closer to and analyze the data in real contexts). The goal is to achieve clarity of meaning and lack of counterproductive effects on the trajectory of representative signs (those that provoke fewer mistakes in the decision task). Objective:This study examined the association between young age and poor road safety practices of commercial motorcyclists in Oyo state, Nigeria. Methods:A cross-sectional study of 371 commercial motorcyclists selected via a multistage sampling technique was conducted. Information on sociodemographic characteristics and road safety practices (possession of a valid license, helmet use, number of passengers carried per trip, and compliance with 10 selected traffic signs) was obtained with the aid of an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Individual road safety practice items were scored and a total score was obtained giving minimum and maximum obtainable scores of 0 and 35. Respondents with scores ≤ 17.5 (i.e., less than or equal to half of the maximum obtainable score of 35) were categorized as having poor road safety practices. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multiple logistic regression tests were conducted. Selected sociodemographic and occupation-related factors were controlled for in the logistic regression analysis. Results:All respondents were male, 80.1% had been riding for commercial purposes for less than 5 years, and 73.0% had other jobs in addition to commercial riding. Road safety practices were generally poor; that is, 84.4% of commercial riders were categorized as having poor road safety practices. Almost all (98.6%) respondents aged < 25 years compared to 84.3% of those aged 25 to <35 years and 76.8% of those ≥35 years had poor road safety practices. This difference was statistically significant. Following logistic regression, younger age (<25 years) remained predictive of poor road safety practices. Motorcyclists aged < 25 years had about 16 times higher odds of having poor road safety practices compared to those aged 35 years and more (odds ratio = 15.72, 95% confidence interval, 1.82–135.91). Conclusion:Most studies conduct only bivariate analysis to test the association between age and road practices of commercial motorcyclists; however, we investigated the influence of potential confounding variables using multivariate analysis. Our findings confirmed young age as a predictor of poor road safety practices among our sample of commercial motorcyclists and emphasizes the need for road safety programs to target this category of riders. The current minimum age for obtaining a rider's license in Nigeria is 18 years; our findings suggest that it might be beneficial to increase the age at which riders in our study area can obtain a commercial rider's license to above 25 years. Objective: This research investigated whether different training methods had any effect on the effectiveness of traffic sign training and whether there were any relationships between traffic sign characteristics and effectiveness of the training. Methods: Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned into 4 equal-sized groups (control, paired-associate learning, recall training, and recognition training) to study the learnability of Mainland China traffic signs. In paired-associate learning, participants studied each traffic sign along with a referent describing its meaning. In addition to being informed of the meaning of traffic signs, both recall training and recognition training provided participants with questions and feedback. For recall training, the questioning process was a recall task in which participants had to produce a meaning for a given traffic sign from memory. For recognition training, the questioning process was a recognition task that required participants to identify the most appropriate referent corresponding to a given sign. No traffic sign training was given to the control group. Results: Each training method significantly improved comprehension of the meaning of traffic signs. Participants from recall training performed better in a posttraining test than those from paired-associate learning and recognition training, indicating that the recall training elicited a deeper level of learning. In addition, questioning and feedback had a positive influence on training effectiveness. Performance in the posttest was found to be better when the questioning process matched the test process. Regarding the traffic sign characteristics, semantic closeness had a long-lasting effect, in terms of the timescale of this experiment on traffic sign comprehension, and traffic signs were perceived as more meaningful after their intended meanings were studied. Conclusions: Recall training is more effective in enhancing comprehension of traffic signs than paired-associate learning and recognition training. The findings of this study provide a basis for useful recommendations for designing symbol-training programs to improve road safety for road users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
