The article is an attempt to describe the current development level of the hotel base in Łódź – the third largest city in Poland. The analysis deals with both historical and spatial aspects. The detailed analysis of the hotel distribution in Łódź is based on A. KOWALCZYK’s (2001a) categorisation of hotel location types in urban areas. The Łódź hotel base is compared with other large cities in Poland.

The paper presents Łódź as a city where major sports events are held. Several sports facilities are featured which make it possible to organize various kinds of events, including international ones. In recent years, based on the existing infrastructure, several such events, for instance European or world championships, have been held in Łódź. The city is also perceived as a leading centre for volleyball competitions (league matches, Champions League, World League, European Championship, World Championship).

Opracowanie jest próbą przedstawienia Łodzi jako miejsca organizacji znaczących wydarzeń sportowych. Miasto dysponuje kilkoma obiektami sportowymi, które umożliwiają realizację różnego rodzaju spotkań, nawet o charakterze międzynarodowym. W ostatnich latach w oparciu o posiadaną infrastrukturę organizowane były przedsięwzięcia o randze mistrzostw Europy czy mistrzostw świata. Łódź postrzegana jest jako jeden z wiodących ośrodków jeśli chodzi o organizację zawodów związanych z piłką siatkową (mecze ligowe, Liga Mistrzów, Mistrzostwa Polski, Liga Światowa, Mistrzostwa Europy, Mistrzostwa Świata).

Tourism space has been considered by most researchers to be the central object of tourism geography studies. The author defines tourism space, indicating the features which distinguish it within geographical space, as well as those which describe its character. He also presents a discussion on the need (or necessity) to make internal divisions and classifications, as well as on selected criteria and ways of classifying tourism space.

The article is an attempt to name and define the processes which transform geographical space and result in the appearance or disappearance of tourism space as broadly understood. The processes include restructurization (modernization and revitalization) and degradation. All of them have been discussed in the context of their actual stage of tourism space development. More attention is devoted to degradation, which has only recently been seen as a process which may lead to the creation of spaces attractive to tourists.

The author attempts to define the term ‘tourism landscape’. It is treated as an important attribute of tourism space therefore, apart from its definition, the author presents its characteristic features and various types of such spaces with differing tourism landscapes. The landscapes of tourism space are treated not only as tourism assets or attractions, but also as the consequences of tourism activity on the natural and cultural environment.
