This means that the internal forces induced must be equal and opposite to the applied loads. It cites that to achieve equilibrium, the following conditions, namely, the sum of vertical loads and reactions must be zero, the sum of horizontal loads and reactions must be zero and clockwise moments must equal anti-clockwise moments, must be satisfied.

It explains that all structures develop internal forces as a result of externally applied loads and the weight of the structure itself. It notes that load can be permanent or temporary. It states that the worst combination of loading must be anticipated in the design of the structure otherwise unserviceability or failure can result.
