The author comments on the relationship between English writer J. R. R. Tolkien and artist Mary Fairburn. He says Fairburn wrote a letter to Tolkien in May 1968 and sent some samples of illustrations for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. According to the author, Tolkien's felt partly responsible for the unrealistic expectations of Fairburn on her illustrations. He believes that Tolkien's comments about the work of Fairburn were beyond polite interest.
