The article features Metropolitan Opera's soprano Eleanor Steber who became the first star in the Metropolitan to sing a doubleheader by design in 1952. Doubleheaders are opera stars who can sing two major roles in one day. Steber was scheduled to make her debut as Desdemona in Verdi's "Otello" and to sing the role of Fiordiligi in Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte" in one night. In 1945, Steber became a doubleheader by accident when she sang Eva in a Meistersinger matinee and then sang as Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni" when the scheduled Elvira got sick.
