The article reports on the ratification of an oil pact in the Iran's Senate in August 1957, which is considered a major break in the traditional 50-50 profit split given to foreign prospectors by the Middle Eastern governments. The country has granted 12-year drilling concessions to the state-run ENI SpA of Italy and its head Enrico Mattei for a strip on the Gulf of Oman. It adds that a royalty of 50% will be skimmed off from the top by the Iranian government for any profits.
