Theories behind light receiving and emitting components are reviewed. Charge-coupled device (CCD) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies in image sensors are compared. Passive/active pixel sensors, and read-out circuits for CMOS image sensors are explored. Photo-receivers and laser diode drivers operated at 1GHz are demonstrated.
