Australia’s housing crisis has been perpetuated by conceptualisation of housing policy in the era of neoliberalism. Opposing powerful private sector lobbyists, progressive housing policy advocacy is vital for steering policy making toward equitable housing outcomes. In this article, we explore how advocates seek to influence policy making through the analysis of interviews conducted with five longstanding community sector advocates operating in Victoria. Advocates described the importance of cultivating relationships with policymakers and conveying consistent ideas to government. Barriers to political campaigning depicted by interviewees included resource limitations and individualistic perceptions of homelessness. The overarching perception was that a fundamental shift from ingrained neoliberalism would be required to restore equity within the housing system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
