The history of the formation and development of a new field of research in chemical technology, such as the theory of chemical process systems engineering, including methods for the analysis, optimization, and synthesis of chemical process systems (CPSs), is briefly surveyed. A classification of the modern engineering main types is given. Methods and techniques for chemical processes (CPs) and chemical process systems intensification and methods for digitalized physical and chemical engineering, the computer simulation of the texture of nanocomposites, and computer-aided chemical diagnostics in materials science are described. Methods and algorithms are given for the analysis of fractal and statistical characteristics of unsteady gas flows in complex gas pipelines. Methods and techniques for energy conservation in chemical process systems are briefly described; the basic concepts of resource and energy-saving logistics are outlined. A brief description of the principles of the computer-aided synthesis of optimal energy- and resource-efficient chemical process systems is given. The essence of digital transformation and automated management of the operation of production facilities of the chemical, petrochemical, and fuel and energy complexes is briefly outlined. The essence of the multilevel training of chemical engineers and technologists in energy-saving environmentally safe chemical process systems engineering is stated. The results of studies on the extraction separation of REE concentrate isolated from phosphogypsum into 75 vol % TBP in a diluent are presented. The proposed technology has been tested in a pilot plant using an automated cascade of centrifugal extractors of the ETs-10FA model. The design of a centrifugal extractor made of high-molecular-weight polyethylene ETs-1000PB has been developed and its serial production has been mastered. An experimental production has been organized for the separation of REEs with the production of high-purity compounds of cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium on centrifugal extractors. As applied to phase transformations and their formally analogous processes, mathematical descriptions suitable for engineering design are proposed for successive, bulk, and successive–bulk transformations with the structural rearrangement of the initial system within the proposed formal analogy of these processes. Biorefineries have been widely studied during the last years and proposed as the best option to transform biomass systems into value-added products. Different methodologies have been proposed for the design of biorefineries: knowledge-based approach, early-stage approach, and superstructures, among others, which have been coupled to process improvement schemes as pinch analysis and process intensification. Regarding process design, it is necessary to ensure that the most advanced concepts are applied on the design to ensure efficient processes that direct to more sustainable processes. The processes that are currently being designed as biorefineries in many cases cannot be considered as completely efficient, because they are generally biased to designs based only in typical methods of process engineering. It is still necessary to implement further design strategies focused on increasing the efficiency and decreasing energy consumption. Multiple methods have been used for the design and improvement of chemical/biotechnological processes. Among these, shortcut methods, especially thermodynamic-topological analysis, are highlighted as a useful tool in the process engineering stage of a given process and might be useful to decrease energy consumption and to increase the efficiency since the design stage. This work proposes a design strategy for biorefineries using a shortcut method as the thermodynamic-topological analysis. For this, a biorefinery based on cocoyam, which is a rural raw material with a high potential for the obtainment of added-value products, was used as a case study. The chosen products were ethanol, lactic acid, starch, and feed additive. The biorefinery was simulated in Aspen Plus. Thermodynamic-topological analysis was implemented in the proposed biorefinery and both biorefineries (with and without the application of thermodynamic-topological analysis) were assessed in economic, environmental, efficiency, and energy-consumption terms. It was determined that the application of thermodynamic-topological analysis generated a more efficient process. After the validation of the results, it was possible to establish a design strategy for biorefineries complementing the knowledge-based approach and based on thermodynamic-topological analysis. Examples selected mainly from the authors' experience are considered for basic kinds of processes, including hydromechanical, thermal, diffusion (liquid- and solid-phase and membrane), chemical. Unsolved problems are pointed out. Advantageous research and modeling techniques are suggested and recommended for studying various processes and phenomena in the chemical processing industry. A problem of designing chemical compounds with controlled properties is considered. An algorithm for computer solution of the problem is presented, and its complexity is evaluated. Software implementation of the proposed approach allows one to perform the automated design of virtual chemical compounds with controlled properties and to plan their synthesis and use.
