Response to the Persian Gulf War by Catholic scholars varied depending on the way the individual interpreted the just war theory. Issues discussed include the ethical questions concerning the initiation of the war, criticism of just war theory and ethical issues about the conduct of the war. Criticisms of just war theory include the pacifist position that no wars are just, the position that many relevant points are omitted by just war theory and the position that the theory is too vague to provide effective moral guidance.
