The function of 'theatre' in the light of art historians is examined. The polarity between 'theatricality' and 'authenticity' is the center of discussion in the analysis. The myopic perception of theatre would account for the limitations and shortcomings of the foregoing analysis. There exists a broader field of study for collaborative work between theatre history and other disciplines.

Vaclav Havel wrote a series of six essays in the 1960s about acting criticism, using famous Czechoslovakian theater actors as examples of individual performance styles. He also produced a play of his own at the same time which illustrated his theories about personal acting styles. The play was 'Nejlepsi rocky Pani Hermanove,' about a cabaret singer.
